I c many softwares which offer antivirus for winows mobile so do v really need them? iam using a tilt2(touch pro2) on windows 6.5 so do i need an antivurs software on my windows phone?
Short n sweet anser, is NO, dont waste your money
Ive been using winmo since 2005 and never come across a serious threat in that time.
If you want to find out why, this subject has been covered many times here, just do a search, but dont worry and enjoy using ur device.

You don't need it. It's a lot of overhead for those who have it and yet they never discover any virus's!
AFAIK, no real virii for WM, although there was that ArcSoft exploit some time ago.
So no. Same for S60v3 and V5. S60v1 and v2 are a different story though
No need for it yet...
reformatting the phone is faster than scanning with an antivirus software.
nah... i don't use it, it would just eat away your precious program memory.

Will windows mobile 2005 work with the XDA2 backpack?
Anybody know if there will be any issues.
Anyone tried it?
Thanks in advance.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=23374&highlight=2005+backpack
Thanks for the post.
I asked again because if you look at the last time I asked someone said the Backpack worked fine with Windows Mobile 2005 for the XDA2i (Alpine), but no version of Windows Mobile 2005 exists (AFAIK) for this PDA.
On asking for further information the respondant wasn't forthcoming, so how could I trust this reply (I certainly wasn't going to buy a backpack based on this reply).
I therefore posted another topic knowing it would get someone else's attention as it was clear the original post wasn't achieving much.
I wasn't intended to be awkard just keen for a proven answer.

I own a backpack and after wm5 upgrade, it stopped functioning ... no one seemed to have the solution ...
The Story of the Backpack?
@ all: The problem here is that there aren't enough of us with the Backpacks that have "officially" upgraded to WM2005 for the simple fact that IT IS NOT SUPPORTED by most of the name branded HTC Himalaya devices... I am sure that there is some marketing sense as to why we are the only ones NOT able to offically upgrade to the new MS OS, however when you look at the market with all of the new Pocket PC/GSM Combos, like the HPs and the Mios, etc... they ALL HAVE 2003SE in them and NOT WM5. This leads me to beleive that we will either upgrade to WM5 and NOT have our Backpacks work or we will stay with an OS where everything works - 2003SE.
Reminds me of their marketing scheme for Millenium Edition, what a joke when all of the Kmarts and Walmarts could not handle all of the complaints due to OS failures... didn't last long though and they got their act together with the NEXT OS's, stealing linux kernels et al. And so the story goes on....
I too have a backpack and I have upgraded to WM5 and back at least 4 times... the only reason I come back to 2003SE is for the Wifi Compact Flash I have - I think that I will get a Wifi SD and start enjoying WM5 while it lasts.
I remember when Buzz and The man named 'M' to which we were not allowed to mention his name for a while as MS launched threats at the forums and all the FTPs where whiped clean by 'unknown' sources - WM5 was unofficially released and became public domain... the only reason in my opinion that there are any devices at all with WM5 on them is because the rebels in this forum dared to push the bounderies with an unstable and beta phased OS, which of course did not advance much since the days of 2004.
So either get used to the backpack NEVER working with WM5 with our devices or get used to staying with 2003SE, sorry to sound negative - only seeing it as real as it is.
Just my 0.02€....
Here's to the crew of the old school boys makin **** happen:
(Not at all surprising where the quote is from):
"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
- Steve Jobs
I prefer to stick with WM2005 and don't want 2 go back to other OS. WM5 is the best OS so far, and right now I had to live without my backpack 4 a while until one day someone will solve this problem ...
FYI, there is a person who is able to use backpack in WM5 and his name is Rictec. I don't know how he did it. He once helped me to make my backpack worked but failed in doing so ...
Pls read my thread in buzzdev.net in WM5 about backpack ... He and Dotfred offered solution to this matter but for me that solution never works. Maybe for the other this may help them in bringing the backpack to work again ...

Hello,
I been around for some while on this website and tried one and other with my phones, now I have a very complex question bcuz I dont know the ins and outs some of ya`ll might think its silly but please respond with serious feedback as I am very exited about it.
My questions:
Is it possible to install a (example) Iphone Os on a (example) HTC Dream? or other phones/ Os (you get the point)
Where do I need to start, to design and OS? Is that even possible for one person to do?
I have no degrees in making/installing/playing with software.
All I do is in my freetime as a hobby. But I spend about 4 hours a day minimum playing around with my phone and reading the internet about possibilities.
Thank you for your feedback in forward!

hi dizzydix,
so you want to design your own OS? Have Fun! (and a few years of time)

no, i don't think so!
and now to your original question, whether it's possible to install another OS on your device:
The OS have to be on the mainor partition of your device and is isntalled as your firmware, every device with own OS has it's own drivers that way, so NO it's not possible so far to install another one, MAYBE in a while there can be some ports for some devices, but not now

no not unless you had enough skillz with a hex editor you could put all the correct hw drivers into the iphone image and after that make it into an image which would
be compatible with the wm device
would take as much time as making your own os which would be years even if
you were a good software developer

Very, very big mistake... You never programming anything in hex editor!!! No matter is PDA prog or PC prog. Nobody on that world is programing in hex editor. Who plays (at least) with bulding software knows that thing is possible in programming languages. You could only apply patch, crack an so on in a hex editor, but even then you do it based on hex code cpu instructions...
Regarding what dizzydix says I think there is another point of view of the problem. Generally speaking, no manufacturer makes special pieces of hardware for one type of phone (or smartphone).
So, if there is a puzzle of hardware pieces who has hw drivers already developed in another phones why it can't be put togheter in a different one?
More clear... HTC Magic has Android OS. Could it be ported to WM?
This ideea came into my mind right now
Why not??? HW specifications does'n reveals anything special. It seems that HW chips are not different from other WM mobiles...
So what is the solution? Cook a version of WM who contains hw drivers already builded for that chips... You don't need to 'hex editing' drivers but just to adapt existing drivers to your phone.
OK, there are more problems regarding organizing memory...and so on...
You get the ideea...
The problem is very, very complex but not impossible. It's up to your brain!
On Mio A701 a group of smart guys tried to install Linux on it (it cames with WM5.5) based on HTC universal drivers!
Hi
Wow thanx guys,
Its starting to get clear.
MoshPuiu thank you for you clear answer, this is what I have been looking for.
Real nice, explination.
I like the thought: Complex, but not impossible!
Anyways, I was coming across this tought when people tried to port Iphone os to a Hero. Read it somewhere on the net.
So then I tought, maybe I can buy me a remake of an Iphone and then put android on it. (I like the look of the iphone, but the interface sucks..way too boring if you compare Android and WM.
Nevertheless, I like playing around with interfaces, but an OS is a whole other level I understand. I while leave that on the shelf.
Ok so have a good day bye guys!
Dizzy
Good Luck and let us know your progress!
Hello,
I am new here, and this is my first post to this forum, but I am pretty sure that it won't be last.
First I would like to thanks everyone in this forum, specially those who are keep thigs going on, so big thanks.
This forum is giving a lot of information, what is impossible to find anywhere else.
So let's move to my question.
I have Xperia X1, and I also noticed, that it won't get official update to Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM, which is really, really bad.
There is a lot unofficial Cooked 6.5 ROMs here in XDA-Developers-forum, and most of them is looking really good and interesting choice to my X1.
So, how I can be sure, that Cooked ROMs aren't include anything bad, I mean virus, spyware, malware or something like that?
Thanks all ready to everyone!
EX1T
Please, comment.
Please, doesn't anyone have any comments about this case?
Thanks
EX1T
you can never be sure anything you find on the Internet don't include such things
but virus, spy/malware don't port stuff made for pc's don't work on pocketpc's
and the market for windows mobile is too tiny for them to bother making it
there are but a hand full of such things made to run on pda and those are more proof of concept then really harmful
you could ask yourself why would the cookers who are private people like you can me
add things from that handful to the roms they make ?
Thanks Rudegar!
I know, that PC-viruses doesn't work on Windows Mobile platform, but there is still "programs" that will do something what I don't wanna risky to my phone.
Do you know, that is there some kind of Antivirus-program wich I can scan my phone after it is flashed with cooked ROM?
I know that there are AV-programs to WM6.1-platform.
Thanks,
EX1T

Hi there,
As my friend above says, there is no threat from spyware, virus etc on PPC, the only one that i ever came across years ago actually asked you if you wanted to install it, obviosuly the reply was "no thanks". I seriosuly would not worry about it, there are many AV programms for our devices which are a total waste of your money.
All of the chefs on xda are cooking for the masses, if you read the threads you would obviously see someone reporting such a thing. In my years here i have never seen such an incident happen.
Go ahead, read and flash to your hearts content. Always ensure when you can, that you have an official rom downloaded and ready should you have a bad flash or a bad experience
Thanks timmymarsh!
This makes me more comfortable to make cooked rom flash to my X1.

Het guys..Im new to HTC phone`s especially Windows Mobile phones...im a complete noob..I like to ask if My HTC Pure does need antivirus program installed? before I can go safety internet? If it does need one, can anyone suggest me the best one? or one that doesnt cause much problems to the phone....less harm, less lag.
Thanks
