Backpack Help - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Windows Mobile 2005 Upgrading

Will windows mobile 2005 work with the XDA2 backpack?
Anybody know if there will be any issues.
Anyone tried it?
Thanks in advance.

from last time you asked
and another hit search gave
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=23374&highlight=2005+backpack

Thanks for the post.
I asked again because if you look at the last time I asked someone said the Backpack worked fine with Windows Mobile 2005 for the XDA2i (Alpine), but no version of Windows Mobile 2005 exists (AFAIK) for this PDA.
On asking for further information the respondant wasn't forthcoming, so how could I trust this reply (I certainly wasn't going to buy a backpack based on this reply).
I therefore posted another topic knowing it would get someone else's attention as it was clear the original post wasn't achieving much.
I wasn't intended to be awkard just keen for a proven answer.

I own a backpack and after wm5 upgrade, it stopped functioning ... no one seemed to have the solution ...

The Story of the Backpack?
@ all: The problem here is that there aren't enough of us with the Backpacks that have "officially" upgraded to WM2005 for the simple fact that IT IS NOT SUPPORTED by most of the name branded HTC Himalaya devices... I am sure that there is some marketing sense as to why we are the only ones NOT able to offically upgrade to the new MS OS, however when you look at the market with all of the new Pocket PC/GSM Combos, like the HPs and the Mios, etc... they ALL HAVE 2003SE in them and NOT WM5. This leads me to beleive that we will either upgrade to WM5 and NOT have our Backpacks work or we will stay with an OS where everything works - 2003SE.
Reminds me of their marketing scheme for Millenium Edition, what a joke when all of the Kmarts and Walmarts could not handle all of the complaints due to OS failures... didn't last long though and they got their act together with the NEXT OS's, stealing linux kernels et al. And so the story goes on....
I too have a backpack and I have upgraded to WM5 and back at least 4 times... the only reason I come back to 2003SE is for the Wifi Compact Flash I have - I think that I will get a Wifi SD and start enjoying WM5 while it lasts.
I remember when Buzz and The man named 'M' to which we were not allowed to mention his name for a while as MS launched threats at the forums and all the FTPs where whiped clean by 'unknown' sources - WM5 was unofficially released and became public domain... the only reason in my opinion that there are any devices at all with WM5 on them is because the rebels in this forum dared to push the bounderies with an unstable and beta phased OS, which of course did not advance much since the days of 2004.
So either get used to the backpack NEVER working with WM5 with our devices or get used to staying with 2003SE, sorry to sound negative - only seeing it as real as it is.
Just my 0.02€....
Here's to the crew of the old school boys makin **** happen:
(Not at all surprising where the quote is from):
"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
- Steve Jobs

I prefer to stick with WM2005 and don't want 2 go back to other OS. WM5 is the best OS so far, and right now I had to live without my backpack 4 a while until one day someone will solve this problem ...
FYI, there is a person who is able to use backpack in WM5 and his name is Rictec. I don't know how he did it. He once helped me to make my backpack worked but failed in doing so ...
Pls read my thread in buzzdev.net in WM5 about backpack ... He and Dotfred offered solution to this matter but for me that solution never works. Maybe for the other this may help them in bringing the backpack to work again ...

WINDOWS MOBILE 5.0 OPPORTUNITY

I found this thread on clubimate.com and the persons email address is attached, please (our ROMmaster) approach him and guide him if needed.
HOPE IS IN THE HORIZON, I HOPE.
Whats the bet that hes got a Charmer?
Can't see the whole article but the MDA compact II is charcoal and WM5 out of the box. Yes, it's a Chamer.
It is ridiculous that ppl still post for WM5 when it is clear that it is NOT POSSIBLE (technological and/or driver wise) on Magician. We had that discussed a million times.
Why is there a sticky regarding Windows Mobile 5 in this forum? WHY WHY WHY?
That's why it's called
DIDN'T YOU READ THE TITLE, THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED AN OPPORTUNITY.

Well said.
There has actually been an HTC build of WM5 for every device since the Himalaya, a developer has to licence it to customise though, so unless someone is going to take it seriously and launch it through qtek, i-mate, Orange, O2, T-Mobile, and so on, you will never see it.
HTC did their part and gave them a choice, nobody was interested though.
The Himalaya and Blue Angel versions were the core builds for beta purposes within various companies working on development and MS themselves, as those were the two most popular devices at the time.
There's no technological reason why WM5 can't exist on the Magician, just commercial.

PDA to XDA help please

Hi guys,
I'm a noobie here as my whopping total of 1 posts indicates.
I've been reading through the forum over the weekend and have learned a lot from the posts here. Unfortunately its left me more confused over which XDA I should get. So i'm going to take the easy route and ask you guys.
I've got, and have been happy using an Ipaq H5550 for a couple of years now. Both for work and pleasure, but 'The Powers That Be' now claim I need a mobile as well :?
I've spent a fair bit of time, effort and money on the H5550, what with Accessories, Utils, Apps and Games, which i'd like to keep if possible. So, my question is:
Which XDA would you guys advice as a replacement for my H5550 ?
On spec's my guess is the XDA Exec, but any advice from real world users would be more than welcome.
Thanks ZaForD.
Ah yes the H5550, an oldy but a goody!
Any way, for us to recommend a device we need to know more about your preferences / intended use.
The hottest thing (if you can wait a bit) is the Hermes / TyTN that's about to come out. It's only deficiency is that it is not VGA like the exec.
Personally, I like my Jamin (Prophet) because of connectivity and size and a price that doesn't go through the roof, but some people might say it's a bit slow, and has no keyboard (not that I need one).
And, if you don't mind a big device with a square 240 by 240 screen, there is the HP 6900 that has WiFi BT and GPS (a rare combination in a phone).
As they say to each hi own, so you have to be a bit more specific.
P.S. Welcome to the forum!
Hi levenum,
Oop's, I can see how some info on what features I need/use would be helpful before you give any advice.
Basically, I do mobile repairs, helpdesk/support, for small offices in London. So I need a fairly powerful device to run Network/Daignostic software. WiFi is a must both for connecting to local networks and our office via the Net. BT would be handy for handsfree use, the Ipaq can get pretty heavy when using Skype for a while.
Size isn't really a problem, as i'm used to the H5550. Which from what I gather is bigger than most of the XDA's here. Again the Ipaq has no keyboard so thats not a problem. Neither is GPS, after 10 years as a messenger around London, I think I know my way round.
I'll check out the Prophet and Hermes, the more options the better.
p.s. Thanks for the welcome.
Well now that I know that your main uses are WiFi and Skype I can tell you that Prophet may not be the device for you after all.
It supports WiFi b and g (where a lot of phones only support b) and it has BT, but from what I've seen on the forums it needs to be overclocked for Skype to work smoothly (although it comes with Skype preinstalled).
I haven't tested this my self though.
One thing I forgot to tell you is that there is a comparison chart in the WiKi for different HTC devices, and there is a nice site www.gsmarena.com that gives specs and user ratings on most GSM phones out there today from different companies.
Check it out.
Thanks for your help levenum,
I checked out GSMarena and came up with a short list of XDA Exec, and Atom Exec there was no real info on the Hermes. But I read alot about it here, so I added it to my list.
After hunting round for most of the afternoon, it turns out that the Atom and the Hermes. Aren't really available yet, so it looks like i'll be getting the XDA Exec. Just gotta see whos got the best deals now.
And start working my way through the Universal forum.
Welcome to the forum!
Having had xda's for a few years now, (since the 1st one was released) and in my work testing many new devices, im still delighted with my exec, espcially the screen, but mainly the keyboard and connectivity options. For your uses the mini laptop mode the exec on a desk whilst working, in tandem with the keyboard, you will soon wonder how you managed without one!
Down sides to the exec, as a phone its maybe a bit bulky to use as an everyday mobile (pub, days out without the car etc) but not much worse than any other pda phone on the market.
Hope that helps settle your mind to the exec, you wont regret it i reckon!
Cheers,
Bryson
Hi Bryson,
Thanks for the welcome.
I just saw a couple of comments about the 'laptop mode' while getting very confused in the Universal section.
I have to say I really like the idea of it. I used to use a Thinkpad X21 [lovely little laptop] for work and missed the screen and keyboard when I first swaped over to the H5550. Now it looks like I can have the best of both worlds.
The Exec is around the same size and weight as the H5550, which I usually carry around with me as an MP3 player when not at work. So the bulk shouldn't a problem.
A couple of things i'm still alittle unsure about [due mainly to not having a mobile for years] is how well it works with a BT headset, and is it possible to use it as a phone via the BT headset, while using Terminal Service over WiFi ?
If it can, I may never have to leave the pub.

hello everyone

a newbies hello
i just bot a motorola mpx200 off ebay for $20
it unlocked. cant wait to play with it newtoy newtoy
this is my first smartfone. i was doing some google searches and came across this site. looking for wm2003 i guess right off the bat. so far have read that wm5 run kinda slow. since smartfones are new for me i figure wm2003 should be fine for me to tinker around with.
didnt see wm2003 on the ftp.
Welcome to the site.
Although we have sub forums for some smartphones here, MPX200 is not one of them. I suggest you also check out www.spv-developers.com as well (if you haven't already).
As for the ROMs we can no longer keep any on the FTP. M$ came down hard and made the admins remove them.
Try rapidshare and the likes, but make sure you have a good virus scanner.
Most important make sure you know 110% what you are doing before changing the ROM or you will be looking for a new deal on a phone!

Hey,
The ROMs here are actually quite good but even if the ROM from HTC (the new one) does not compare with the ones made by XDA gurus they did some nice stuff...for example clearing the storage automatically after flash (no hard reset??) and the radio looks to be quite good it has all the countries in EUR now and the auto network configuration actually works...and there is no bluetooth activated right after flash...
Maybe some of these good things can be implemented in the new custom ROMs also...
More than blaming HTC for its ****-ROMs , we should contact the people who is working on port the Diamond drivers.
i think that zaharakis says what we all feel
htc tricked us
i can play videos and emulate gba games fluently at mt 3 years old ipaq 2490
while i cannot even turn the screen instantly to the stupid kaiser
and think how it would be if we didn't have the chefs

I wished the same thing until I realized that here in this forum we only represent negligible fraction of what could make an impact at all for their revenues.
hi guys,
i used the kaiser since few month with the org. german vodafone rom 1.58.... and all thinks work fine except voip with the rear speaker problem, and no drivers .. we all know.
Yesterday I use the new official german rom and this works so bad for me ... same speed, problems with the touchscreen, BT headset works but kaiser works slow with BT on.
Before I throw the Kaiser off the window :-/ I wait for a community rom with diamond drivers and give the people here a detonation for that. No more money to HTC from me.
Greets ChriZZ
Why don't we all let HTC know this... Mail them, all of you, it's costing them money and time to reply to those mails.
Still didn't get a driver, which they promised us and a crappy performance when it comes to graphics... So don't frustrate the people over here with your shortcomings, but irritate the HTC staff .
That's just my point of view...
(For example: create an example mail (like the one on htcclassaction (or so) and mail it all to this crappy company)
Cooked wm6.1 ROM > *anything

your point is good my friend ..but you think they don't allready know it??
i don't believe that no one in htc didn't try first this update, before releasing it in public
so they just yellow us for another one time
Sorry..Why u r angry?...also all the coocked 6.1 ROMs are sucks...i tried theme all ( full of bugs ) and dont let u even use the device the way u like...
am using the HTC offecial ROM i ( WM 6 ) all the needed program are running very good ( Arabiser for the arabic users like me although this arabizing softwares did is not the offecial for HTC, windows live working,Skyps workin, camer i dont use so musch but the pic's i took are very good,GPS working ( using sygc7...so what else you dream off ????????? the only this that make me try the 6.1 is the sound of my Gabra 8040 voice is not that loud i need ( i live in a noisy country)...and just we all should know that this is a PPC not a PC u ca not just load it with tons of programs
the only thing i think HTC should do is to use MVC insted of the buil in program althought that program runs very good but we all like the MVC
I remember when!
Remember when they "HTC" announced the Kaiser II , the promo how cool it looked. We all couldn't wait, built in GPS smaller design "not as thick" I fell for the hype. Now what are they pushing the "DIAMOND" wow lets all sell our Tilt's and Kaisers II on eBay and go out and buy a Diamond. but wait what is the Diamond missing what are it's short falls. Do we all trust HTC since they have been so honest with us up to now, it seems that everyone is tring to make a Iphone look alike. If you want an Iphone buy one. it's cheeper then a Kaiser II and you can get 2 for the price of a Diamond. I like my Tilt and I am going to keep it. but I don't like HTC and I would be willing to contribute to any legle suite or team that can go after HTC and hold them accountable. They may reside in a foreign country but I live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and we know how to screw someone in court. Land of the Free and home of the Class action suite! I am extremely happy to belong to this XDA community, I feel like this is a big extended family and we have family members all over the world. We have all been waiting long enough and apparently in vein, for HTC to release video drivers. I believe they never had any intention of correcting these problems. Oh and one more thing I never used a Windows machine at home until I got my first HTC device Samsung SX66, then 8525 now the Tilt. I am a die hard Mac user have always been. but in the world of PDA's Windows is King! I can't get what I need out of an Iphone and looks like I am not going to get what I expect from HTC. Shame on you HTC you took a customer that bought a new device each and every year and drove me to this. maybe your next years P&L will open your eye's.
Ed...
I'm sorry, but how exactly does moaning about a multi-milion dollar company on a developer forum do any good?
I'm sure the folks at HTC are reading all this on a daily basis, and take pity on your plight, and will be releasing a driver asap to make us all happy.
The kaiser does what it's supposed to - it's a business centric device and as for the multimedia part, it might not be a monster, but it does do the job relatively well.
Face it, HTC doesn't care about a 7 month old device, neither do they care about you. Try and think about it from their point of view - Releasing a brand new device boasting of 3D capabilities is MUCH better for sales than worrying about implementing it on an already released crippled one.
With that said, I hope this will be the last of such threads and the ROM development forum is no place for this sort of rant anyway.
So... after thinking it for a long time I have gone back to the original WM 6.0 ROM.
- Official WM 6.1 update by HTC: No text in landscape mode, programs crashing, skype does not work
- Cooked ROMs based on this: same problems with landscape
- Cooked ROMs with 1.65 radio: do not work well with my router, slow GPS fix
- Other cooked ROMs: display problems, have many programs I have no use for or I have to install others that came as standard (this leads to little storage free at the end). Skype does not work on most cases.
- Original ROM: Big free storage, GPS works fast, WiFi works, Skype works, all programs work, no crashes.
So, by updating what the hell do I gain?
My other choice would be WM 6.1 3.02 ROM, I've been using it for weeks, but hell, in the original ROM skype works.

It helps if we don't buy into their next product. Multi-million dollar companies are made buy consumers. If you take away the consumer then you don't have a multi-million dollar company.
why dont we all put our kaisers in a big bag and then take this bag in a helicopter and release over HTC Corp. (with some TNT, or some Hydrogen in Fusion) and Bang !

ROM Comparison chart

I thought I'd leave you all with the ROM comparisons that I did when I was actively using my Universal. Half way through I upgraded to 128 MB, so this is reflected in some of the memory readings.
These are my own personal findings - I tested programs on the ROMs that I was interested in. Perhaps I'm opening a can of worms here, but I hope you find it useful.
Thanks Jonny!
Great information, will add to the FAQ
How do you feel with your new Rhodium?
My new rhodium is great - I'm not looking back! (Oops, perhaps I shouldn't have posted that here!). I know it doesn't run WP7, but there is certainly life in it yet (and I have a lot of bought programs which run on WM6.5 only, so I'm quite happy).
I enjoyed too my Rhodium!
And moved to Leo was a big shock for me coming from a real keyboard line devices...
I expect to go back to keyboard devices soon as I find a similar spec HTC device
Jonny could You paste this file with .xls extention? I don't have Office 2007 and i cannot get into it
Thx in advance

Ok, updated first post to include excel 2003 version Rom Compare3.xls
very useful information!thanks
Great
OMG...
You HAVE used your Uni buddy!
And I thought I was a serious user...still using though...nobody in my town knows what a 128 MB Uni means to me...will just keep it till I grow old.
I'm waiting for a really good WP7 piece...checked one HD7...but the software glithces.. or shortcomings are too many....let's see.
Hey kalya! nice to see you around
Perhaps would be wise to wait for Touch Pro 7

Great job!! Obrigado!
what next?
I don't know Orb...which would be my WP7 handset.
As always , win mo are dull, very down to earth, mature looking gadgets...they will never be fun and I accept that....
Just waiting for a great hardware & the new OS's perfect synchronisation.
Uni was it...we got maximum from it...but my country's mobile network never caught up with the handset.
Just waiting for it...hoping...HTC would almost deliver and I know XDA members will make it perfect.
Yes it´s true...
I have played with WP7 on my Leo and decided to go back to WM/Android as it´s to damn closed platform it seems like apple...
If WM is really dying which I doubt I think I go to Android instead...
Please let me know what you finally decide to upgrade
Cheers,
Maybe Galaxy Tab if nothing good comes out in the near future.
We win mo users don't want a new OS or high config devices as much we need really new --FRESH-- apps, but maybe the new apps reqire both the things..OS+new hardware.
Otherwise I stll have some of the handsets in my sig(and some nokia ones also)
