How to install OS on phone? - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I been around for some while on this website and tried one and other with my phones, now I have a very complex question bcuz I dont know the ins and outs some of ya`ll might think its silly but please respond with serious feedback as I am very exited about it.
My questions:
Is it possible to install a (example) Iphone Os on a (example) HTC Dream? or other phones/ Os (you get the point)
Where do I need to start, to design and OS? Is that even possible for one person to do?
I have no degrees in making/installing/playing with software.
All I do is in my freetime as a hobby. But I spend about 4 hours a day minimum playing around with my phone and reading the internet about possibilities.
Thank you for your feedback in forward!

hi dizzydix,
so you want to design your own OS? Have Fun! (and a few years of time)
Is that even possible for one person to do

no, i don't think so!
and now to your original question, whether it's possible to install another OS on your device:
The OS have to be on the mainor partition of your device and is isntalled as your firmware, every device with own OS has it's own drivers that way, so NO it's not possible so far to install another one, MAYBE in a while there can be some ports for some devices, but not now

no not unless you had enough skillz with a hex editor you could put all the correct hw drivers into the iphone image and after that make it into an image which would
be compatible with the wm device
would take as much time as making your own os which would be years even if
you were a good software developer

Very, very big mistake... You never programming anything in hex editor!!! No matter is PDA prog or PC prog. Nobody on that world is programing in hex editor. Who plays (at least) with bulding software knows that thing is possible in programming languages. You could only apply patch, crack an so on in a hex editor, but even then you do it based on hex code cpu instructions...
Regarding what dizzydix says I think there is another point of view of the problem. Generally speaking, no manufacturer makes special pieces of hardware for one type of phone (or smartphone).
So, if there is a puzzle of hardware pieces who has hw drivers already developed in another phones why it can't be put togheter in a different one?
More clear... HTC Magic has Android OS. Could it be ported to WM?
This ideea came into my mind right now
Why not??? HW specifications does'n reveals anything special. It seems that HW chips are not different from other WM mobiles...
So what is the solution? Cook a version of WM who contains hw drivers already builded for that chips... You don't need to 'hex editing' drivers but just to adapt existing drivers to your phone.
OK, there are more problems regarding organizing memory...and so on...
You get the ideea...
The problem is very, very complex but not impossible. It's up to your brain!
On Mio A701 a group of smart guys tried to install Linux on it (it cames with WM5.5) based on HTC universal drivers!

Hi
Wow thanx guys,
Its starting to get clear.
MoshPuiu thank you for you clear answer, this is what I have been looking for.
Real nice, explination.
I like the thought: Complex, but not impossible!
Anyways, I was coming across this tought when people tried to port Iphone os to a Hero. Read it somewhere on the net.
So then I tought, maybe I can buy me a remake of an Iphone and then put android on it. (I like the look of the iphone, but the interface sucks..way too boring if you compare Android and WM.
Nevertheless, I like playing around with interfaces, but an OS is a whole other level I understand. I while leave that on the shelf.
Ok so have a good day bye guys!
Dizzy

Good Luck and let us know your progress!

Ok, I just ordered my Cect P68+ so I still haven't recieved it yet. But, I have been trying to learn all that I can about it. It looks like only now is someone possibly able to break into it. I use this forum, http://p168.myfreeforum.org
It is great (just like xda-developers). the OS is called...probably won't say this correctly...Neuclues OS? Think that is how you spell it. Anyways, it does not have Java which is what everyone wants to be able to do applications, it needs an embedded java to be added to it's OS to run the types of apps everyone wants. It looks to be a fun iphone clone, and reasonable @ only $160.

Android ROM

Good afternoon, this is my first post here, so i'll introduce myself a little.
I'm Johan, I live in The Netherlands, and i have a "MDA II, a T-Mobile branded HTC Himalaya" and a "MDA Compact, a T-Mobile branded HTC Magician".
I'm doing a study informatica, and i'm planning to choose as minor for software engineer or game development.
Currently for a schoolproject we have to write an application for an android mobile phone. Both my phones aren't for android and afcourse i've searched the forums as good as i could but so far no luck.
I'm looking for someone with some background knowledge of Android and who could point me in the right direction on what i should do to make a custom ROM for 1 of my telephones, i read that for the compact there are some linux tryouts so i think the base is there already it just needs to be explored a little further.
Hope that someone can help me out,
Thanks
Johan
Hi Johan, welcome to XDA
Unfortunatly i do not beleive that either of your devices will run android, however, part of the Android DTK is an emulator. That should work for you?
Good luck
Hi Badwolve,
Thanks for youre reply, I am aware of the emulator in the android SDK, but its really really slow... (CPU runs up to 100% really soon even with just an empty project running and RAM is 400MB wich is quit a lot) and then you have to count the RAM usage of netbeans to etc.(laptop kinda protests against this abuse )
So if i could beat that crappy emulator part and run it (maybe just as slow, but hey) on my telephone that would be awesome.
Also i did read that for the magician there are several versions of linux, so there is some sort of progress, but i have no idea if someone is still working on that, or if anyone could point me in the direction where they left off.
(i had the idea atleast that android was somewhere based upon linux, and that the java was somewhat based upon sun's java idea (lol @ did you guys know there isn't "JAV"A ... there is just some layout of how java should look like and then you can makeup youre own ideas)
i'll have a look for you, but i'm quite busy at the mo
will post if i find anything
http wiki xda-developers com/index.php?pagename=Android_devices shows that the apache http pdadb net/index.php?m=specs&id=705&c=verizon_xv6700_htc_apache runs android.
I think the specs aren't much different from the magician (cpu/ram/rom) http pdadb net/index.php?m=specs&id=133&view=1&c=t-mobile_mda_compact_htc_magician
The himalaya has a bit less CPU but the RAM capacity is higher, so i guess if the specs from 1 phone is good enough to run android, phones with simmilar specs should work to.
Or is that just to simplistic?
I'd really love to hear where i should look to figure out howto start experimenting. I meen, i'm googling everywhere, but i have no idea what searchterms i should use to get in the right direction, the only thing i keep getting in my face all the time "its impossible blablabla" but then again, look at the specs of the cpu/ram ... and look at the "its impossible to run win mobile 5.0" while there is 6.5 available for them.
Its just a point that someone actually has to start working on it, and hope that others follow. If someone points me in the right way, i'll be the starter and hope that i get backup when i get stuck somewhere.
(can't add :// or . in links :S keep getting some weird notification ... copy'd the links from the wiki, so they can't be to bad )
http www talkandroid com/android-forums/android-hardware/2-android-minimum-hardware-requirements.html Minimum requirements for android in 2008 .... wonder if those specs are still the same.
Unfortunatly, just because the specs are simaler, it doesn't mean it will work, different mainboard, ram type and rom type.
if you got a diamond or newer (but not HD2), you could use haret
i recp, emd the TP2 or Topaz (Diamond 2), these run Android very well

[Q] Making a windows mobile port for a tablet pc?

Hi fellow members of XDA!
This is a question I putting to the community (hope to receive more answers than my previous question.
I've been browsing around the web for the last few day in search of way to make my own tablet pc. I think I found some interesting things to get me going and I do have an old laptop that I think I could easily use for my adventure. And so, now that the Hardware part is (in theory) solved I've reach another problem. The OS part. I know android is open source, that most likely I would easily put linux running on the machine, but somehow I want to make it windows mobile capable. Call it a whim if you want.
After reading some stuff around this forum about rom cooking (and I'm no programmer) I have more questions than answers.
So my big question is: If a XDA Rom Cook had access to the device specs, could it build a windows mobile rom for that same device? What specs would he/her need?
Another idea of mine is: I have an old blue angel and a prophet stopped at home. Could I salvage parts from them to the tablet pc?
And here is another question: Where can I get the touch screens, casings and other tablet pc components? Does anyone here knows?
Thanks for reading. I'll start on this project soon and let you know how it goes.
Cheers

[Q] I need help so I dont brick my phone!

I just got an HTC HD 2 today from a friend, and it already has a version of android on it. I dont know how to replace the android files without messing up the phone. Can someone help or walk me through this?
i know this aint help but have u tried the hd2 section
also is your name from coheed and cambria lol!
I have looked through the section and I cant find anything on how to replace the files. Yes it is. The greatest band ever!
sry i dont know anything about the hd2 and yes sir you are correct i just saw them in dallas for the neverender tour 4 hours of nothing but coheed it was amazing my 3rd show i may add new orleans, little rock, and dallas!
you shld be able to ask the same question in that thread im sure someone will be able to help
If your friend was so generous to give you that nice piece of hardware I´m sure he can guide you to replace the Android OS with that Microsoft crap. Your friend has invested some time and energy in the modification of his phone so he would be interested in having you enjoying it, too, wouldn´t he?
To be able to help it would be useful to know if android rom is nand (ie has replaced the original wm6.5 os) or is running from sd card.
When you boot up the phone, does magldr load?
I would suggest you do go over to the hd2 forum and look at the sticky threads, tey have all the info you will need to change/update android to something newer or even change os completely to say wp7?
If your droid is nand, it is very simple to update, just head over to the HD2 nand forum
Cheers.
Thank you everybody for being kind and not throwing noob slanders at me. The friend who gave me the phone actually bought it off of someone who put android on it haha so this nice phone is a hand-me-down for sure.

did you spend ANY time to search on the forum before you posted? IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.
technology not compatible, despise it is near the same devices are unique to run windows or android, you should be able to sell your w phone and get an android version
also keep in mind that you might not be happy with the android version. if used to windows phone you will find the higher battery drain under android quite disturbing.

The best bet is to exchange with someone who needs Windows phone but holding an android phone.

It may be worth waiting. Windows 10 may allow you to install android apps

Woot !!!
Hello guys,
Seriously, I'm currenlty struggling to get one, as they're only availabel in the U.S. and nobody wants to ship to my location...
If you really have one of these and want Android, then please make things simple for everybody : contact me to sell yours and get an Android model !
On the other hand, i agree it would be fun to be able to run an SD Android ROM like we did on the HD2, but if you're looking for a NAND ROM, justs swap for a regular M8 that's available everywhere !
P.S. : I'm serious about wanting to buy an M8 for Windows... AT&T unlocked, as we're using only SIM cards here. Thanks ! ^^
Isn't there any swap section on this forum, btw ?
As a FYI to anyone that happens to be messing around in this space: I've intentionally bricked my (Win) M8 into QDLoader 9008 mode, but haven't gotten much further as the device doesn't appear to fully implement Qualcomm's Sahara protocol, or at least implements it differently than any examples for other devices that I've found - it will do the hello handshake and a mode switch but returns some sort of error after that. I'm out of relevant docs and examples on Sahara and firehose though, so I'm pretty much done unless I decide and manage to hook up JTAG.
There was a poster in another thread who said they were able to install android this way, but then never reported back with their "tutorial". As such, they may very well have been lying, but unless someone who understands the M8's Sahara support chimes in, it's still a possibility. Not trying to get anyone's hopes up though, as I'd say it's still unlikely given the lack of dev effort for this phone.
any updates?
Anybody hear about any update on this topic? My friend and I are willing to work on a project to see if we can make it possible. We just need to know where to start. As of now, I have the HTC M8 unlocked to sideloads apps and what not. Anything helps. Being negative never gets you anywhere. Being positive opens new doors. Thanks for your time.
Developers! can you convert windows htc m8 to android?
Hello Developrs!

we'll keep in touch
Thanks for the offer, but I've bought a Lumia 950 now.
BTW, your email address seems to have been "anonymoused" ! ^^
.
Checking in for any updates. I got handed this phone in an insurance upgrade.
Hi, I can't find the other 3d about the porting, but today I was thinking about the mi4.
If you remember, the MI4 LTE can switch between windows mobile and android... maybe if we study the tools and the code behind that device we might modify/create a tool or (maybe) at least find something interesting that we can apply to our htc one m8.
I'm not a dev and my english is very bad, but I wanted to share with to all of you my thoughts.
