Backflip Bricked - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I was messing around with the camera and suddenly it goes to the White Screen with the Motorola logo in the middle. Its just stuck there. I've pulled the battery for at least 30 minutes, tried holding down, up, camera, while turning the phone on, no luck. Every time I power it up its just the same white screen. It's doing nothing.
Are there any other manual methods of resetting this thing? Anything that can be done through the USB cable?
I've tried messing around with RSD lite but kinda useless if there is no image to flash from. I see there are no OS files available for this thing. I'm at a total loss.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Try removing the user data and cache partition from recovery

Man I can't even get into recovery mode. Literally, nothing gets me out of the white motorola screen unless I pull the battery.

call ATT and get a replacement. its gotta be under the 1 year manufacturs warranty
tell them what happened like u wrote here and they have to refund you one
and if they dont
call again and make up another hardware fault or software fault story

Have you tried removing the SD card?

Thanks for the suggestions. However, I didn't purchase it from ATT so I"m unable to return it. As far as the memory card, I have tried this, no luck. It actually happened when I was trying to take a snap shot without an SD. It prompted me that it wouldn't save the image without an SD, then it crashed.

Even if you buy from a 3rd party reseller, the phone is still under warranty and should still be covered through AT&T. Complain to enough people and get what you want.

Yea thats what i've been told. Guess I'll try a few stores and stir up some raise havoc. Thx guys.

You could try flashing the chinese flash-file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=651417 It did not work on my phone, but supposedly this build has the cliq's root exploit present in it. It would not flash to my phone, but I think that may have been a driver issue. It couldn't hurt...

So I tried a couple stores, no luck. Since I bought it from a third party they need the number it was purchased under along with either the receipt or individual who bought it. I have none of that. So...I'm screwed. Ill try the chinese idea but don't know if that will work since the pc doesn't seem to detect the phone via USB in the state that its in. My last resort will be motorola directly and I know that will take forever. Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

Surround wont boot

Hi guys and girls, Im new to the forums and ive turned here because I have noone else to go to without dealing with customer support. My problem is my HTC Surround gets stuck on the "HTC" screen and wont go anywhere past that. Before my phone died I noticed it was very laggy and all my pictures were gone. I dont know if you guys can help, im pretty good with computers so any suggestions I should be able to try. I was also wondering if it was possible to flash the OS right back on it myself if its corrupt. Thanks.
a few things to try in this order...
1. if you have a case on the phone, remove the case, then try and boot
2. try connecting it to the pc and booting it up (launch zune on desktop first) to see if it zune can fix it
3. try holding the volume buttons up and down at the same time and booting the phone, it should ask if you want to hard reset, select yes (you'll loose all your data, but since you can't even get in the phone anyways, that shouldn't matter)
4. go back to the store and get a replacement
Thanks for the response
1. No case
2. Tried this, zune software says it cant restore my phone
3. Tried this as well, no luck.
4. have insurance, but being from alaska that is my last resort because i dont want to have to wait a week for shipping to get a working phone back, but if i dont find a solution before ATT closes tomorrow thats what ill end up doing.
Mine did the same thing 34 days after I bought it. They would not even trade me out in store because it was 4 days past due of the return date. I had to go through factory warranty to get a new one. It was just flat dead and nothing would revive it, even a hard reset. Fortunately Zune backs up all your pictures so you should be fine there. Call ATT immediately.
Sounds like the sd card in it died....
You could take it apart and replace the card (Google ifixit, they have pics of how to), but you might void the warranty if they can tell you have tampered with the card.
Good luck
Sent from my HD7 using Board Express
Some questions if it is the SD. Is the OS stored on the SD? If so how would I get WP7 back on it. I could definately change it myself. I actually just saw a break down on the Surround. If it doesnt void my insurance id be totally willing to change it out with an even bigger SD while im at it.
As for dealing with Warranties and insurance, thats my last resort being in Alaska the shipping processes are a pain.

Captivate Plauged by Media Scanner Problem?

Hi Guys,
I've had the Att Galaxy S Captivate phone since December and it's been both a dream and nightmare. The phone is phenomenal when it's working but I've been having issues with them from the first phone.
Basically I've been through 4 yes 4 Captivates with the same issue. Let me first just say that I've kept them in pristine condition! The stupid things still have the original plastic on them! Either the phone is in my pocket or sitting on a table charging! None of them have ever seen the ground nor moisture of any kind including sweat!
The problem is basically this:
I'll be on a phone call or using the browser, then the phone will softly vibrate like I've provided a user input, the little bar will say External SD card removed. After that the screen will black out with the 4 soft keys still staying lit. Then the phone comes back up to it's lock screen and says Media Scanner running and it's an endless cycle after that.
Basically it's resetting but without the Galaxy S logo or the ATT logo in an endless cycle.
I read somewhere on
I don't have an SD card inserted nor do I have any suspicious applications. Hell the only things I have are Facebook, GasBuddy and Email synced.
I've done numerous hard resets, gotten a new sim card and 4 phones! Has anyone else had anything like this?
I take it your running the stock ROM?
In which case you have two options:
Get a new phone, or install a custom ROM.
Mikey's pretty much spot on with this one. Try a custom rom if you are stock. If not, go back to stock. Eliminate software as the cause first. If.it persists, new phone time.
Sent from my Oops it just shutdown again.
try removing your apps and see if it goes away, if it does put your apps back one at a time wait a few days to see if the problem returns between adding your apps if you get the problem without apps, do you have an external sd card if so, remove it and see if the problem returns, if it does, get a new phone.
csmeance,
Please reply if, and when, you solve the problem. I had virtually the same thing happen twice within 20 minutes, removed the battery and rebooted and haven't had it happen again.

I have the stock rom on the phone, no alterations what so ever! The only thing I've done in common on all 4 phones is sync my email and facebook.

I've only used factory software on the phone and done numerous hard resets with tech support, and in one instance is made the problem happen right after it turned on without any sort of reason!

Like I said, I have the factory ATT apps and then an updated facebook one. As well I have that gas buddy app which I got with my 3rd phone since a friend suggested I use it to save some money!

But I'm not putting in an SD card! Only thing that goes into the new phone is the battery and SIM chip!
Maybe it's referring to the internal SD card
Got a new phone from ATT so I'll wait and see what happens with this one...
are you using the stock samsung wall charger? Using chargers that provide less than 1000mA current make the phone think it's being used by a computer as a USB device. When the phone is removed from the charger, it then rescans the SD cards,etc...
Download RescanMedia, disable media scanning until you need to use it. FYI, you must have USB debugging enabled to use RescanMedia.
Maybe that will help you.
Umm well.. u're saying that u're syncing the Email on all 4..
If u're syncing to Exchange, maybe it propagates some kind of a "bad" certificate on your phone making it do silly things?
This has happened with 4 phones? Why don't you insert an sd card and see if that does it? Or go to settings and mount/unmount sd card?
Four phones with the same fault is highly suspicious. Focus on the things that are common to all phones. I would start with the sim

I already have gotten 2 new sim cards and am going to get another one today. I got the 5th one a few days ago and put the 2.2 update from Samsung and Att on it. Today the same thing is happening. I'm going to make a video of it and send it to att and samsung. This is getting ridiculous...
I'm using the stock charger and the ATT stuff only. I've noticed though with the 2.2 update, the phone will vibrate twice quickly, then once, then freeze and shut off and restart. With 2.1 on all the other phones, it would just restart without any sort of vibrate/tone.
Also this is with it off the charger and on the charger. It doesn't matter at all.
Just as an aftertought, the only thing that I have done in common is talked on the phone while it's been on the charger. When I do this the phone gets VERY hot and I end up using the speaker phone function. Is it normal to do this on the capitvate? I know my old Tilt 2 used to do the same.
Update: Called up ATT and they said to get another new sim, they think it might have been corrupted somehow with the captivate update. I'm going to grab a new one!
When they send you a new phone, do you get a new battery too? You said it gets really hot, maybe there's something wrong with that.

Am I Hard Bricked Or Not?

So, I rooted my wife's old Galaxy S3 (Verizon). It took a bit to figure out as this is my first Samsung device I've ever tried to root. I read as much as I could find before I did the deed. Basically I tried a few of the known methods out there. Nothing worked until the Towelroot method. Worked like a charm. I didn't do anything weird. I put Rom Manager on it to put a custom recovery on it. I did forget that I didn't unlock the bootloader. Now the phone is/was on Android 4.3 JellyBean. Anyways I did EZ-Unlock to unlock it. I removed the normal bloatware. Nothing that would harm the phone. Then because this phone is running off of WiFi only and I kept getting the no Sim card message I decided to power down and put a non active Sim card into it. That's where things went horribly wrong. I turned it off, put the Sim card in, powered it back on or tried to and the phone did nothing. I got no vibration no lights not a thing. So after trying several button combinations I pulled the battery and plugged it in and that got the red charging light. When I plug it into my lap top it makes the recognize device sound but can't find drivers for it. I tried to do the hard brick recovery where you download the hard brick onto an sd card and then the phone SHOULD boot off of it. Well that didn't even work. I just can't understand what exactly understand why this happened or what happened to get to this point. Any help would be amazing guys. It is just a play toy at this point. But it's important to have the phone working in case of needing it for a temporary phone.
It is impossible to downgrade from the 4.3 locked bootloader to the unlocked bootloader. Verizon killed the loophole, so yes you are hard bricked. You were right in trying the SD card de-brick. Did you try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166?
Make sure you use a class 10 SD card and one that has the same storage size as the phone's internal storage (16/32).
If that doesn't work you need to get a JTAG repair. I know http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/ has a JTAG repair service. They even have a bootloader downgrade service to revert to the unlocked bootloader!
OK, so the de-brick method. The guy has 2 of those videos up. The one that I believe everyone is going off of is the one where he states you have to have a certain SD card. The other he states that it will work with anything and that it's much easier than the previous video. So having seen both, I don't honestly know what direction to go in. I don't have any income or money right now to go buy the right card if that's what I need to do. I also can't do the JTAG. However I did read up and watch a few videos on making my own jig. I also found one on ebay for 4 bucks with free shipping. That I could possibly swing. But 20 bucks or 50 bucks I can't. It sucks that this all happened, as much as I dislike Samsung phones because of their plastic feel and touchwiz I was looking forward to getting rid of touchwiz and seeing what the phone could really do. I was unaware that the loophole had not been reopened. I suppose I was reading things wrong then because while there are restrictions on what Roms you can flash I thought that we were still able to unlock the bootloader. I mean Ez-Unlock worked from what the phone said. Now if that's what hard bricked it then ok I guess, I just would have thought something would have went wrong right after and not wait until I powered the phone off. Meh, live and learn I suppose. Perhaps getting the jig or making my own for a buck is what I should do to see if I can get it to all work again so I can start from scratch. I should have known when I tried to root a Samsung phone from sprint a couple years ago that this was a bad idea. I soft bricked that one and couldn't get it to come back from it no matter what I did so a third party store had to do it for me. Then I soft bricked it again. Samsung phones hate me. LOL I appreciate the help. Any further help and or thoughts on this matter are totally welcome!!
Yeah once you use EZ Unlock the phone will still be fine until you try to reboot and it goes through the boot process. Once it doesn't recognize that part of the bootchain it bricks.
But yeah if you can make a jig to get yourself into download mode you can ODIN a stock 4.3 tar and be back up and running.
So it was EZ-Unlock huh? Alright well now I know. I'll run to radio shack and get the resistors I need and give it a shot. Doesn't seem like it's all that hard to do really, just a matter of hitting the right points in the charging port.

Jig won't work, not even worth trying.
Well, I tried making the jig and that didn't work. Not sure if I'm just not hitting the right parts on it or what? Now the battery is totally dead but I swapped it with my father in law's fully charged S3. Now I went ahead and bought the little jig thing that they sell on E-bay. Yeah that hasn't worked yet. I'm going to research into it more and see if I'm just doing something wrong or not. But it should be plug in and boom it goes into download mode. If not then next month I'll get the SD card I need and try that method. Right now I'm just stuck. And not only stuck with this problem but also stuck waiting for my upgrade phone replacement to come in tomorrow as I upgraded from my DNA to the One M7 but that one is on a boot loop so now I'm waiting on the LG G2. Ugh, my luck with phones is just not going in the way of Good. LOL

You're hard bricked, you need to do the SD card method or send it out for a jtag repair.
A USB jig will never work in this situation.
Well I guess that's what I'll have to do next month when I get paid again. Go get the SD card and give that a try.

Nexus 5 Screen will not light up

Hey guys I've had my N5 for almost a year now but it seems to have gone kaput on me recently...
On Monday I was on a skype call, (just audio) when my phone suddenly restarted, I didn't pay much mind to it as that happened before and it would usually just cut back on, but this time, it restarted, and restarted and just didn't stop. That lead me to think its the power button being stuck so i checked it out and made sure its not being depressed and well yeah it wasn't. And soon after that the phones screen was sometimes on during the reboots and sometimes off. I knew it was rebooting because the N5 vibrates a bit when Google pops up on the loading screen in a certain way, but yeah now the screen doesn't light up at all, there's still vibrations and sounds like when I call or when I say Okay Google a few times, the LED will even light up during a call. I know the phone is "on and working" in the background but the screen doesn't light up and as such I can't touch it, any ideas and or advice friends?
bump de bump?
Possibly your backlight burnt out? Water damage?
if you are running cyanogenmod, you could be experiencing sod "sleep of death". thats when you know the phone is on and working, but the screen doesnt turn on. ive been reading lots of complaints about cm and the sod.

As the phone kept rebooting it went from seeing everything, to seeing nothing but the back light to dark, so maybe? It was just by me on my desk too so I was doubtful about the water damage but I put it in the sealed rice bag for about 24 hours just in case but still no luck.
I actually am running cyanogenmod and whenever I do have a problem I always feel that its related to CM as the phone doesn't have any physical damage...maybe I should look into that, any other ideas friends?
P.S I am using the ElementalX Kernel and UNFORTUNATELY I turned on the FAST CHARGE USB option and that makes the phone play funny with the computer, if you guys have any advice as to how I could turn off that option please do let me know

all it does is completely wipe your phone and install an older android version. flashing the factory img will do the same, except youll get the newest android version. don't use these tools, doing things the right way will be more beneficial to you. anyways, since cm is having issues, try a different rom, or just go stock.

Well i got mine through the Play Store and I did think about an RMA, I know there was that free screen replacement thing going on but the customer rep sounded like he had no idea what I was talking about. and I'm thinking its a flex cable issue as my phone hasn't incurred any damage from drops or bumps or anything since i make it a point to be stationary while using phone, but....where the sim card tray is, that "bridge" or thin piece on the bottom side toward the phone has split as a result of my bad sim card ejecting, but that was when i first obtained the phone, also there is another split, inside the phone there is a canopy above the charging port that is split but i still know that occurred long before this, and its not even an electrical piece along with the sim card bridge thing.
BUTTT yeah im afraid if I RMA they will use that as an excuse to charge me $400, even though I know it's not playing any sort of factor in my screen acting up....Is there a policy on that?

Check to make sure you have the newest drivers (there's a sticky in the general section with all the useful info). If you bought it from the play store see if you can get an RMA - Google seems to have a good rep with this. It wouldn't hurt to flash a factory image to erase everything either before sending it off (privacy and whatnot). If you have the newest TWRP (2.8.0.1) if you boot into recovery and you should be able to access the internal storage without having to select anything (in case there's anything there not backed up). Boot to recovery is volume down twice and power I think.

[Q] a very serious problem i think (can't even recovery)

hi guys, i already searched for a thread of someone with the same issue, but i haven't found anything on the whole internet (maybe it's just because i'm nervous as sh*t)... please let me know if i did wrong
the problem is: yesterday i was using regularly my Nexus 5, but suddenly i wasn't able to turn it on again. Just like a second before i was using it, and then it won't wake up. Now it is still turned off, i can't wake it up in any way, i tried every combination of keys, i tried holding on the power button for more than a minute, i tried pushing it hard, i tried everything. The only thing i'm able to do is plugging it on the charger, then it goes on a bootloop with the word "google" and a small vibration (just as it's like to turn it on) and then after a second the screen becomes black again, and this happens continuously untill i unplug it (i tried even for 2 hours and it still do like that). It is just like it wants to wake up, but then it is turned off, and on, and off, and on...
when he does like that i tried holding the vol down button just to try to enter the recovery mode, but even when i achieve to enter it, it still turn off so i can't decide what to do. Every guide i read on the web tells me to backup, then to erase all data, or something similar... but the problem is that i can't even access recovery mode, so that i'm not able to do anything if the phone is turned off completely.
i already called for the warranty, i have a completely stock phone so it's not a problem and i think they will change my phone, but i'm really worried this will erase all the data i have in my sd, and i would like to know if there's a way to copy what's inside the memory of the phone without turning it on
sorry guys but i'm really depressed, i've bought the phone on january... not even a year and i've wasted 350€
So, first question have you tried plugging into a computer? You may be able to pull some files off.
Second, was any of your stuff backed up using cloud storage, such as google drive? If not... You have my sympathy.
What app(s) were you running when it "Died"?[Edit: Died]
So you are completely stock, no root, no custom recovery, no nothing?

1) yes i tried: it does the same as if i plug it into the charger (google and vibration for a second, then turned off again, repeatedly). I can't access the data from my pc with the way i was used before (i could copy data only if the phone was on)
2) i use dropbox, google drive, and others, but not with the syncronization (i decided when and what to upload) so there's a lot of things that now aren't accessible and i'm scared i'll lose
3) well i wasn't using anything when it died... i think the cronometer was running, maybe whatsapp... recently i downloaded ePSXe for android with a couple of ROMs, but for a whole week or two i never had problems using it
4) yes completely stock, the only thing i did was abiliting the developer options (but a looong time ago, and i never changed them, i was only curious). With my old smartphone i used to play a lot with custom roms, but now i wanted to keep my nexus clean at least until the end of the warrancy
news from the google service: they told me some procedures to do, any of them work. They told me that their warrancy works like that: first they will send me another nexus 5 (not new, only a refurbished one) for the price of a new phone, then i have to send them my old phone. When it arrives, they will refurbish it, and they will give me back my 350€.
I really think that's not very fair... first because i don't want a phone that somebody used before me, and i don't want to give my phone to someone else
second because they don't really care that i lost all my data... after all this mess i will only obtain a phone that isn't new, and without my data! just like if google erased all my data for nothing.
please guys at least tell me if there's a way to recover all the data i've lost. You know: i have a 16gb flash storage full of data in my hand that i want to copy on my pc, there should be a way!
sorry for the anger
Have you read anything from @supersu or @simms22. Both of them are very knowledgeable on the N5.
The other thing is you could try calling google again and get a different person.

supersu? You mean @rootSU?
OP, your power button is stuck, nothing you can do except RMA (or maybe take your phone apart).

i also read a forum in the country i live (italy) and it seems to be a frequent problem these days... a lot of guys who have a 9-10 months old phone accuse the same issue, and the only solution seems to be the motherboard substitution (or the google warancy phone substitution). Google told me they will give me a refurbished phone, but i know sometimes they have scratches, they are not perfect, so why do i have to trade my phone for another one that could not be new? i know they used to send new phones in the early days... Do you guys have experience in that? have you ever send you nexus5 to google? what did they do?

You get a refurbished one because too many people have RMA'd for silly reasons like loose power buttons, speaker hole size and screen light bleed. So blame them.
Usually a refurbished device should be near-perfect; those who have gotten ones with damage are just unlucky; and you can just call Google again anyways.

i think i'll see if i can get my phone fixed with the LG warrancy in a LGcentre in my town, at least they will tell me if i have to throw my phone away... then i'll use the google warrancy.
to me it sounds as your storage corrupted, not power button. if it was power button, youd be able to get it booted, then it would bootloop. if it is the storage that corrupted, an rma would be best.
