Currently using SPB backup, no problems until now but lately becoming very slow, now it says backup file too large for recovery so was looking around for alternaives.
Ive searched the forums, and can find alternatives like Sprite etc but i was after some opinions from those who have actually used other apps besides SPB backup, any comments welcome, thanks.
Try this one
I use this one and it's verry good, try it - PimBackup
I have used sprite with my last few phones and PDA without any problems
Currently using the version that came on the memory card
Here is the link for PimBackup2.8

I just tried sprite and it killed my phone. It said backup file index error, the phone then soft resetted and would come back on. HTC sense was stuffed up and then the home screen would appear with no clock, weather etc, just the slider icons. Another weird thing it said i had 99 unread emalis and sms's. when i opened them it said i had 99 messages from a William Bartle, no such name in my contacts lol. Had to hard reset and luckily a recent backup i did worked.
After all that i realised i used Sprite for windows 6.0, it obviuosly makes a big difference not using the 6.5 one lol.
Thanks
thanks everyone else for their replies, will have to thy the pimbackup option out.

Hi again,
Can you confirm if its a complete backup program. I just tried it and had all options ticked but the size of the backup is 1697k yet when i used SPB it was much slower and approx 95mb.
ie/ after a hard reset id like to click on the backup file to restore it exactly how it was, themes, apps, sms's everything etc. Not just my appointments, contacts etc.
Can this program do this?
Resco Back up
I used this with my TYTNII. It was a little hit and miss and at times slooooowww!
Loaded onto my HD2...YEAH!! Goes like the clappers and never misses a beat. It has saved me twice after a hard reset following over-ambitious tweaking
There is a trial available from Handango and all the usual sites.
Good Luck!

Cheers mate, i have just downloaded and giving it a go now.
** yeah it works well, didnt give me the same errors that SPB just started giving me. Overall compression smaller as well, backup file was about 77mb vs 98mb using SPB yet same apps, settings etc. I havent tried a restore yet but im sure it will work, thanks for the tip.

After using i noticed the backup isnt a single file but many files. When you did a restore, i was wandering you did you load the file. ie/ SPB is a single file so after a hard reset and no apps are installed you just use file exp and select it. With Resco i cant see which file to load, it seems that you have to use Resco to restore but after a hard reset Resco isnt installed. Did you have to install this after your hard reset to be able to restore your backups?
Anyone know the answer to this one? Seeing a hard reset removes everything, how can you restore a backup using Resco if its not a single file to run like SPB backup.
Thankfully havent had to do this yet but just wanted to know from others using it.
Using RESCO B'up

When you set it up it writes the program in a smaller form to the micro SD. You must navigate to the folder in explorer on hard reset and launch. I would do a restore using the "SELECT" items tab - selecting all items. Doing a "FORCED" with "FULL RESTORE" was no good.
As I have it set-up for doing a daily "update" there is only one file. You can do a full daily b'up but you'll need plenty of chip room as the files are reasonably big. It does however act more like a system restore point in this case allowing restore to previous time points rather than just the most recent back-up.
Hope this helps

Hi Davej,
Appreciate the reply. I have had to do a full restore but thanks for the tip re: using Select, will use next time. Sorry for the dumb question but when you navigate to the folder, how do you launch or execute tihs. There are hundreds of files in the folder so i dont know how to launch it. With SPB it was easy being just 1 file, can you advise?

Yes. Rexboy. Don't plummet to far into the folders. Using Explorer navigate to the folder on the SD card called "RescoBackup". It will contain a folder with all the compacted backup files AND a standalone "RescoBackup" app. Launch the app and off you go!! Too Easy!

Can someone please put me out of my misery, whenever I have hard reset my device, sometimes deliberately, sometimes not, then resync I can't use the same device name. As I always end up renaming it the first expletive that comes to mind I'm running out of names  My aim is to use sprite backup to maintain an image of the device on my pc so when the inevitable happens I can just restore everything, apps and all. Am I being unrealistic there? Thanks for your patience, I've been through the search options but no luck.

In active sync go to file, mobile device (these are the device names setup under active sync) choose which device name you want to delete then click on file \ delete partnership. Do this for each device name you would like to delete (it will also ask if you would like to delete the file folder it created for that device, your choice)
Use an SD
Hi!
I used to have your same problem, there is a easy work around: use Sprite back on SD card instead that on PC (or on SD card before than on PC) and you would never have to change name again!
Hope this helps.
Chris
Excellent! Thanks to both of you! Iggy, has that man ever made a crap record? No.
Somehow, my wife deleted opera from her phone. I don't know how she did it, I think she was playing in the File Explorer. Anyway, the Opera folder was gone as well as another folder called MDS.
Possible to re-install Opera as it should be without having to do a hard reset?
thx!!

Backup the PIM stuff (contacts etc...) and do a hard reset.
i doubt its gone since its in the rom. she may have deleted the shortcut. otherwise try a newer version (search here for opera)
Thanks for the answer guys. Ended up having to do a hard reset.
Thanks again!
in future, you may just seach teh forum for the CAB file for the missing application...
is is a lot painless than hard reset.
Gotcha. Thanks for that. I did look through the thread about new opera versions and such, but it got a bit too confusing... so I just did the reset, but will try to do that in the future.
dear all!!!
really it's so hard to restore many pimbackup.pib files on a device...
i have been searching for an extracor, or kind of emulator that alow me to view the backuped file on my pc...
thankyou
best regards...
moiisse
If I remember correctly, you can rename the .PIB file as a .ZIP and then look at it with your "favourite archive tool".... Within the ZIP/PIB file there are loads of CSV format files for each of the messages/contacts/phone logs etc.
The only problem may/might/will be if you did the PIM backup in binary format; your best bet would be to post on the PIMbackup thread (here) and see if Dotfred or anyone else can help
Cheers,
Mark.
Dear Mark
I have tried this trick but the files I got were not .CSV one some other extension files. I am afraid if I am doing anything wrong.
The extension is not .CSV, but they are in CSV format. If you rename them to .CSV and open them with Microsoft Excel or Openoffice Calc (or whatever), they can be imported as semicolon delimited files (so strictly speaking, they're SSV - "Semicolon Separated Values" rather than CSV )
Hope that helps,
Mark.
That was a great tip!
Any idea how to import these into an Android Phone - just got an HTC Hero today. Took a backup of my existing contacts, sms etc from WM6.5 (HTC Touch HD) and could see the .pib (renamed as .zip) and individual files (which I renamed as .csv)..
Guess there might be a simple trick to restore them as well in HTC Hero?
I think I may have found something........

I was about to say I have no idea and I don't really care (about Android phones that is, not your problem getting your messages onto your Hero!), but then.......
I found this - Sprite Software's FREE (at the moment) migration software - which looks like the answer to your prayers
I've seen a report from someone who used it - apparently, it's pretty slow, but as it's a "one-time" transfer operation.....who cares how long "free" takes!!!???
Let us know how you get on - and post something in the Android-related forums so that other users can benefit.....
Cheers,
Mark.
(At times like this, I wish I had a Paypal "donate" button.....this gem of wisdom is surely worth a buck/quid/euro or two ....Ho hum!!!)
Excellent! That seems to be promising!
Just tried using that and tried to restore only the sms on my android, however it gave an error. Have emailed sprite software the relevant log file, lets see if they come up with the reason of failure. Guess it might have something to do with the threaded view on my win mob 6.5
PS : Paypal donate button shudn't be that difficult to get
And yes just thought that I would mention about the contacts - its actually very easy - just get them into csv file using the trick that you mentioned above and then import the csv file in gmail contacts! that's it! gmail automatically syncs the contacts thereafter!

Hi Mark (Am I Noob to Android)
It seems like, you have solved the issue here. I did have one question for you:
What if you allready had a PIM back of your old phone. Then the phone you have sold it. But you still the the PIM backup file on your SD card. Can you still go on to follow and start from 2 step and then step 3.
Or is the another way of doing this then?
Many Thanks.
yes u should be able too as long as the PIM file is on your SD card. you can just directly transfer it onto your PC, then rename it to a ZIP file and proceed as instructed above.

that is what I got also, I tried importing data to excel (with / without renaming to csv or ssv) but the text was not understandable in any language so I did not even proceed in selecting the separator and actually import the data.

Come on guys read a little more on the web, if you would have done so you would have figured out you have the binary backup files, not the text file, so what you need to do is convert. Now if you press the search button for the forum you would have found this interesting link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424641
the title says: 'Convert PIM Backup binary file to text without using windows mobile device'
(considering yours broke like mine)
You can read there that you can convert it to a text file using an emulator on your pc and subsequentlyfollow the steps that were described here...
First of all what makes you think that none has bothered to use search button or at least Google the issue?
Second and last ok you have proved us stupid.
Anyway thanks for the link even though a late reply cause personally I have solved my issues.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA app.
Hi, I've tried searching the forum but can't find an answer to me query.
I've tried to install a cab on my Omnia (for anyone considering buying one, don't) and it failed now the 6MB of free space on my phone is gone without a program showing on the un-install menu to remove to free it up again. Essentially I have converted my phone into an expensive paperweight, and it's not even very good at that as it's quite windy here today. I can't send text messages or launch any programs as there's not even enough memory for that. Any ideas on how I can make my phone usable again, if I had space to back up my phone numbers I'd hard reset but I'm not mad keen on loosing my newer contacts.
Thanks in advance, or at least thanks for looking.
It seems to be that those files are somewhere in windows folder, by usinf file explorer try to delete the files that you are not using from my document, application and data, temp and also delete the browsing history and cookies from IE or opera mobile also you cane use a program called clear temp to remove unused files you can download it from here http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-cleartemp-v1-0.html
Enjoy....
Problem is being discuss in these threads, but still without a solution:
Here + Here + Here + Here + Here + Here
I had this problem where, inexplicably, the wmplayer failed to open.
Threads more like this problem are identified above.
After many steps to be able to identify the origin and solution, today was the big day that could resolve this error. I will explain:
PROBLEM:
wmplayer don't start : when click in start menu icon => nothing happens; try to play a media file (p.ex, open it inside file explorer) => nothing hapens, and so on...
CONSEQUENSES:
Although you can install another media player to listen to music, this was not the solution because without wmplayer is not possible to hear the sounds of system notifications (for example, warning sms, reminders, ...) and, worse, it is not possible to reproduce your ringtone on a phone call.
A hard-reset was the solution, but after a few days tweaking my device... bummm!!! the problem back again (and the hard work to reinstall many apps after a HR)
CAUSE:
The cause of this "fk..." problem is very simple: the system has a temporary folder for some apps : by default : "\Application Data\Volatile".
If you delete this folder (manually or with any clean manager app) the wmplayer don't start/run. The folder content can be deleted any time, but the folder itself not.
This temp folder is set in registry key : [HKLM\System\FileSys\TempPath]
By my experience, almost all apps that use this folder to cache temp data are able to create it if don't exist, but wmplayer not, so if this folder was not previously present WMP don't run (and the WMP built-in engine to play system notificatins/ringtone also not)
HOW TO SOLVE:
2 options :
- Easy : manually create the folder name "Volatile" inside "\Application Data" folder (names without ""). After that, wmplayer is back again
- Not for newbies : edit registry key [HKLM\System\FileSys\TempPath] and set a path that exist in your device and soft-reset.
Personally, I prefer to set a folder in which I'm sure that no any app clean manager will erase it. So, I set the root folder "\Application Data" for temporary temp folder for some apps in above registry key.
For newbies, I made the attached .cab that do it : just install and soft reset.
Thanks for the findings.
Thanks so much...
thank you SO MUCH for the cab file - this just happened to me yesterday and i was considering getting a whole new phone (BJ II is a couple years old and figured if i was going to have to do a hard reset, might as well just get a new phone). but this worked like a charm! every other site says hard reset, including every other mention of this on this forum. amazing. this has been going on for people since the BJ II first came out a couple years ago, so i'm glad you came up with a fix!!!
very good
best solution.
thanks mate
great solution, thanks
I was going to hard reset my Touch Pro, but it helped
BTW, it's strange, but I had Volatile folder on my device with some temp files in it, WMP began to work after emptying that folder
anyway, thank you again
thanks a ton!!!!
Hey, Finally a solution for this prob... thnx buddy.. this is great.....
appreaciate your hard work....
thank you... your solution helped me!
Thank you thank you !!!
I got this issue: wmplayer won't start and when wmplayer don't work: no more ringtones for calls, no more wake up alarm, etc.
After reading this thread i went to my volatile directory. I had 999 ! folders in this "volatile" folder. After deleting all 999 items wmplayer work again.
This is a BUG from microsoft !!! I mean why these temporary folders are just emptied but not deleted after use ???
This is the best solution.
I already have the Volatile folder and after clearing all the files inside this folder, its back to its usual form.
Great! Thanks!
PERFECT!! I can't believe it was so simple
wow thanks a lot!
you saved me a lot of trouble.
Congratz xkaiser and thank you!
1 Question: How the f*** did you find that this was the problem...??? (actually the source of the problem)
It worked
Many thanks. It worked perfectly! I cannot believe it was so easy.
Thanks xkaiser
Joined the forum just to download your fix and it worked perfectly.
I've been having the problem for over half a year now and just kept hard resetting my bj2 to get my ringtones back.
Download his file, transfer to your phone and double click to run on it. Problem solved!
Awsome
xkaiser- you are the man! I've done many hard resets to fix this problem. Thanks a ton. IT works great!
Thank you so much for posting the registry edits and even more thanks for the cab file! I HATE hard-resetting my phone and this prevented me from having to take that step.
Xkaiser! Thanks!!!
Gave a warning on my BJII that the app was for an older version of the WM phone. Still worked great - THANKS!!! You are the Man.
Bill
Hi im new to this forum and im not too sure how to use the file and get it too run on my phone too fix the problem. thankyou for your help. im so close to a solution but i cant figure it out =(
I forgot to mention that the "volatile" is not in "application data"
NVM lol I did it!
Wow! Thanks!
Me too! Can't believe it was so simple!!
Thanks for figuring it out!
