Hard reset rename problem - General Topics

Can someone please put me out of my misery, whenever I have hard reset my device, sometimes deliberately, sometimes not, then resync I can't use the same device name. As I always end up renaming it the first expletive that comes to mind I'm running out of names  My aim is to use sprite backup to maintain an image of the device on my pc so when the inevitable happens I can just restore everything, apps and all. Am I being unrealistic there? Thanks for your patience, I've been through the search options but no luck.

In active sync go to file, mobile device (these are the device names setup under active sync) choose which device name you want to delete then click on file \ delete partnership. Do this for each device name you would like to delete (it will also ask if you would like to delete the file folder it created for that device, your choice)

Use an SD
Hi!
I used to have your same problem, there is a easy work around: use Sprite back on SD card instead that on PC (or on SD card before than on PC) and you would never have to change name again!
Hope this helps.

Excellent! Thanks to both of you! Iggy, has that man ever made a crap record? No.

Notification Error

I recently tried to start PicselBrowser.exe from a location other than the default one. It failed and I put it back into it`s default directory and uninstalled/reinstalled it. Now every time I turn on my Apache (WM5) it tells me ''Notification Error'' ''Cannot execute /Storage Card/PicselBrowser.exe'' which is the directory that I mentioned that I had failed to start the program from. Does anyone know how I can stop this message? Thanks.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know of a forum somewhere that would be better suited for this question?

Yes, that is a little easy to solve. I had that trouble a while back with another application I was messing with. Here is the solution.
Look into Windows>Start Up folder. In there you will probably see a .lnk file pointing to the OLD PicselBrowser.exe. Since you already moved the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file to a NEW location, then put it back in the same place. Your PPC thinks it is already a NEW file despite the fact that you returned the very same file to its ORIGINAL location. The solution is to replace that .lnk file by creating a shorcut of the NEW PicselBrowser.exe file in another folder, then rename that file to the same name as the one found in Windows>Start Up folder. The next step is a simple cut and paste to replace the lnk file.
The uninstall process probably leaves behind the OLD lnk file or notification to launch the NEW picselbrowser.exe file. So in reality, the lnk file is still searching for the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file. Despite the Uninstall procedure that you performed.
I hope I made it clear for you. Let us know if it works.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I am a newb when it comes to technical PPC stuff. I looked in my startup folder and several others and found the following:
poutlook.lnk
sddaemon.lnk
Services.lnk
SpbMobileShell.lnk
None of these appear to be Picsel Browser, I also looked on my Storage Card, nata. Any other ideas? Thanks again!

Ohhhhhhhhh. I have another thoery and again very simple.
What kind of SD Card are you using? I would guess a 4GB one, isn't it? Basically what is happening is that, the built-in SD Card reader of your PPC is not fast enough to read the entire contents of the SD card when you turn it ON. To solve this issue, there should be an option from within Picsel Browser to delay its startup upon turning your device ON.
An alternative solution is to install Picsel Browser in the Main Memory rather than the SD Card.
Another alternative solution is to use a Lower Memory SD Card, say a 2GB SD Card, for faster read.
As a last resort, if you have MemMaid or a powerful Notifications Manager, just delete the pesky notification manually. Why does Picsel Browser need to be read every time you turn your device ON anyway?
Hope this helps.
---
Actually, I am running a 2 GB MiniSD Card and to be honest, I dont know why it is trying to activate PicselBrowser.exe each time I turn on the device. Let me clarify that it is not coming on every time that I do a soft reset, it is every time I press the power button on top of the device. Also, I got this same message when I first tried to run PicselBrowser in it's not default location, which is why I moved it back. Why it has been attempting that operation ever since is a complete mystery to me. Thanks for your help though. I would be clueless without you.
I guess the only thing to try now is delete the notification manually using a Notifications manager. BACKUP 1st is the RULE, before deleting an kind of Notifications.
Another extreme solution is Hard Reset and install from scratch. I know sounds horrifying specially if you have tons of stuff.

I'm getting exactly the same error for 'wakeup.exe' for Wisbar Advanced Desktop at the minute, I know that there has been a lot of discussion over at the lakeridge forums but most people have solved the problem by reinstalling several times.
EDIT: i think I may have fixed my problem. try installing picsel browser again without uninstalling it on your pocket pc. See if you get the message about 'all other previous versions will be deleted' just tap yes and continue to install it again. Then see what happens.
(And just as i thought i fixed it, the message appeared again)
I tried to install Picsel Browser over the existing install several times and it did nothing to the error message. I don't know what else to try, any more ideas?
Please, this is really annoying every time I turn on my phone. Any ideas?
I sitll get the same with WAD.
Hey, I fixed this problem simply by copying (NOT CUTTING) the file in question (in my case PicselBrowser.exe) to the directory that it was telling me it could not start from. Hope this helps. Cheers

ALL MY CONTACT (outlook) is lost did a system restore and no luck where did they all go? anyone had this problem?
PLEASE CAN ANYONE TELL ME if there is anyway to recover these data from my mobile !!!! Any place where these deleted items could be retrieved from ?Any recovery tool that i could use ???
PS: I have not performed any soft or hard reset of my mobile yet...
Thanks in advance for your help...
Look on your PC in deleted items in Outlook. This happened to me as well and I was able to restore everything. Also check your activesync settings to make sure they don't overide the PDA contacts.
thanks for the fast reply, how did you restore it? did you have to do it one by one?
thanks in advance...
Just select ALL then drag and drop in the contact folder
hopefully
hopefully you have also an answer to my problem:
i tried to synch the data of "my documents" (htc x7500) with my pc.
unfortunately after this procedure half of the mobile files have disappeared.
is there any chance to recover these lost files?
thank you very much in advance!!!
People People People. Seriously READ the screens when setting stuff up. The time it takes to do that will save you headaches later. If you have stuff on your PDA and then Set up to Sync from your PC; the PC files take Precedence and will "Clear" the PDA files that are not on the PC. Now if you read, your ActiveSync should allow you to "Keep Files ON PDA" or something. Thusly, it wont delete files that are on the PDA but not the PC.

I made this mistake and almost had a complete disaster. All my life's contacts, tasks (I'm big with tasks), appointments. I nearly died. It's cause I was moving to new computer, it wouldn't accept the blimmin' outlook.pst I'd backed up (thanks microsoft), and I didn't see that option in WMDC to replace items on desktop, not phone. So when setting up new partnership with new computer, it wiped my entire phone's data! I experienced genuine dread. That setting is actually a little hard to find and notice.
Miraculously the data was still in deleted items on my friend's computer's unused outlook that I was using beforehand! I recovered most items that way...(onto phone then from there to new laptop). Struth! (just cause I said blimmin' before without noticing it)

thank you for your answer!
i was always very careful about this feature and put this setting to "replace element on desktop" (so i felt safe and backupped my PDA to the PC).
but even so, it went wrong when synching "files".
now they are deleted on the PDA.
my question: is there any possibility of restoring these deleted files on my HTC x7500?
thank you VERY much in advance!!!
2nd attempt
hopefully any of you pda-experts will answer me, if there is still hope for my files, or are they absolutely lost?

Well, for the benefit of the community at large always give full details of the solution, what you did and how you did it,it helps many others to solve and benefit from it.This forum believes in "Help & Support"
Its very simple.
Just uncheck binary backup while taking backup then go to backup archive rename its extension from pib to zip, extract it with any zip software, rename the contacts file from .csc to .csv extention.
Open excel, import data and choose semicolumn as delimerter, finish.
YUP !
I know,its very simple,I know the workaround
Just wanted to point out to you that always explain how you solved your problem,as to help others, who are seeking for the same solution and might be wondering how to solve it.
when a new thread is started with a view to seek help,it must have ample info and workaround to finish it solving that problem, with keeping in mind that many cud benefit from it.

Backup Program

Currently using SPB backup, no problems until now but lately becoming very slow, now it says backup file too large for recovery so was looking around for alternaives.
Ive searched the forums, and can find alternatives like Sprite etc but i was after some opinions from those who have actually used other apps besides SPB backup, any comments welcome, thanks.
Try this one
I use this one and it's verry good, try it - PimBackup
I have used sprite with my last few phones and PDA without any problems
Currently using the version that came on the memory card
Here is the link for PimBackup2.8

I just tried sprite and it killed my phone. It said backup file index error, the phone then soft resetted and would come back on. HTC sense was stuffed up and then the home screen would appear with no clock, weather etc, just the slider icons. Another weird thing it said i had 99 unread emalis and sms's. when i opened them it said i had 99 messages from a William Bartle, no such name in my contacts lol. Had to hard reset and luckily a recent backup i did worked.
After all that i realised i used Sprite for windows 6.0, it obviuosly makes a big difference not using the 6.5 one lol.
Thanks
thanks everyone else for their replies, will have to thy the pimbackup option out.

Hi again,
Can you confirm if its a complete backup program. I just tried it and had all options ticked but the size of the backup is 1697k yet when i used SPB it was much slower and approx 95mb.
ie/ after a hard reset id like to click on the backup file to restore it exactly how it was, themes, apps, sms's everything etc. Not just my appointments, contacts etc.
Can this program do this?
Resco Back up
I used this with my TYTNII. It was a little hit and miss and at times slooooowww!
Loaded onto my HD2...YEAH!! Goes like the clappers and never misses a beat. It has saved me twice after a hard reset following over-ambitious tweaking
There is a trial available from Handango and all the usual sites.
Good Luck!

Cheers mate, i have just downloaded and giving it a go now.
** yeah it works well, didnt give me the same errors that SPB just started giving me. Overall compression smaller as well, backup file was about 77mb vs 98mb using SPB yet same apps, settings etc. I havent tried a restore yet but im sure it will work, thanks for the tip.

After using i noticed the backup isnt a single file but many files. When you did a restore, i was wandering you did you load the file. ie/ SPB is a single file so after a hard reset and no apps are installed you just use file exp and select it. With Resco i cant see which file to load, it seems that you have to use Resco to restore but after a hard reset Resco isnt installed. Did you have to install this after your hard reset to be able to restore your backups?
Anyone know the answer to this one? Seeing a hard reset removes everything, how can you restore a backup using Resco if its not a single file to run like SPB backup.
Thankfully havent had to do this yet but just wanted to know from others using it.
Using RESCO B'up

When you set it up it writes the program in a smaller form to the micro SD. You must navigate to the folder in explorer on hard reset and launch. I would do a restore using the "SELECT" items tab - selecting all items. Doing a "FORCED" with "FULL RESTORE" was no good.
As I have it set-up for doing a daily "update" there is only one file. You can do a full daily b'up but you'll need plenty of chip room as the files are reasonably big. It does however act more like a system restore point in this case allowing restore to previous time points rather than just the most recent back-up.
Hope this helps

Hi Davej,
Appreciate the reply. I have had to do a full restore but thanks for the tip re: using Select, will use next time. Sorry for the dumb question but when you navigate to the folder, how do you launch or execute tihs. There are hundreds of files in the folder so i dont know how to launch it. With SPB it was easy being just 1 file, can you advise?

Yes. Rexboy. Don't plummet to far into the folders. Using Explorer navigate to the folder on the SD card called "RescoBackup". It will contain a folder with all the compacted backup files AND a standalone "RescoBackup" app. Launch the app and off you go!! Too Easy!

Ah cheers mate, i saw that but thought it was the actual install cab i put on my phone lol, thanks again.

Need names of default files on htc

I accidentally erased a name of a file using total commander and can't undo myself.
My files show:
//Plugins
Application Data
ConnMgr
Content
Documents and Settings
Music
My Documents
Programs
Storage Card
Temp
Windows
and "wrong name because I deleted it" (in the folder is Manilla_20100401....)
Can someone please let me know what that file name should be? Most of my programs won't fully launch now because of it.
Thank you for your help.
Michael
Just hard reset your phone. That's always an easy fix that's sure to work
I just had this phone replaced due to warranty and had finished reinstalling lots of items but stupidly hadn't made a backup. I was in fact only opening total commander to make certain it was working when I accidentally deleted the file name. I would hate to hard reset when it is just a single file name that needs replaced .... I hope.
Do you have SK Tools? If so, this is a piece of cake. Open the database tool and export Replstor as an .xml. Open it with notepad on your PC and find the name of the file or folder (and its contents) in the list. There could be a few thousand entries, so it may take a while.
Farmer Ted--I don't find any of my file names from my device in this document. Thank you for the suggestion but I am still at a loss for the original names of the folders under My Device.
If only I knew someone with an HTC Fuze, I could just look on their panel under My Device. Unfortunately, most of my folk are Iphone zealots. Their advice usually involves a different purchase!
Michael
Well, I realized after I posted that if you somehow deleted one of the databases, then it won't show up in replstor, because they're all excluded from replstor. Most of them can't be deleted, though. You should have mxip_initdb.vol, mxip_lang.vol, mxip_notify.vol, mxip_swmgmt.vol and mxip_system.vol. If you're missing one of them, then look in the\windows folder and find the rom version and copy it to the root of the device. It may not have everything it needs in it, though. Just post up if you're missing one, and I can probably tell you how to fix it (well, maybe, lol).
Thanks FarmerTed, I'll give it a go as soon as I understand what it means! Just to clarify, I didn't delete any files. I renamed it. Not on purpose. These are just the basic files under My Device.
I've renamed stuff before, too. The best thing to do if you catch yourself is to delete the entire name, then highlight another file. The messed up file will go back to the original name.
shoot. doesn't work. It would have if I would've done that in the first place though, so that is good to know.
