[Resolved] [wmplayer] Windows Media Player (wmplayer.exe) don't start - General Questions and Answers

Problem is being discuss in these threads, but still without a solution:
Here + Here + Here + Here + Here + Here
I had this problem where, inexplicably, the wmplayer failed to open.
Threads more like this problem are identified above.
After many steps to be able to identify the origin and solution, today was the big day that could resolve this error. I will explain:
PROBLEM:
wmplayer don't start : when click in start menu icon => nothing happens; try to play a media file (p.ex, open it inside file explorer) => nothing hapens, and so on...
CONSEQUENSES:
Although you can install another media player to listen to music, this was not the solution because without wmplayer is not possible to hear the sounds of system notifications (for example, warning sms, reminders, ...) and, worse, it is not possible to reproduce your ringtone on a phone call.
A hard-reset was the solution, but after a few days tweaking my device... bummm!!! the problem back again (and the hard work to reinstall many apps after a HR)
CAUSE:
The cause of this "fk..." problem is very simple: the system has a temporary folder for some apps : by default : "\Application Data\Volatile".
If you delete this folder (manually or with any clean manager app) the wmplayer don't start/run. The folder content can be deleted any time, but the folder itself not.
This temp folder is set in registry key : [HKLM\System\FileSys\TempPath]
By my experience, almost all apps that use this folder to cache temp data are able to create it if don't exist, but wmplayer not, so if this folder was not previously present WMP don't run (and the WMP built-in engine to play system notificatins/ringtone also not)
HOW TO SOLVE:
2 options :
- Easy : manually create the folder name "Volatile" inside "\Application Data" folder (names without ""). After that, wmplayer is back again
- Not for newbies : edit registry key [HKLM\System\FileSys\TempPath] and set a path that exist in your device and soft-reset.
Personally, I prefer to set a folder in which I'm sure that no any app clean manager will erase it. So, I set the root folder "\Application Data" for temporary temp folder for some apps in above registry key.
For newbies, I made the attached .cab that do it : just install and soft reset.

Thanks for the findings.

Thanks so much...
thank you SO MUCH for the cab file - this just happened to me yesterday and i was considering getting a whole new phone (BJ II is a couple years old and figured if i was going to have to do a hard reset, might as well just get a new phone). but this worked like a charm! every other site says hard reset, including every other mention of this on this forum. amazing. this has been going on for people since the BJ II first came out a couple years ago, so i'm glad you came up with a fix!!!

very good
best solution.
thanks mate

great solution, thanks
I was going to hard reset my Touch Pro, but it helped
BTW, it's strange, but I had Volatile folder on my device with some temp files in it, WMP began to work after emptying that folder
anyway, thank you again

thanks a ton!!!!
Hey, Finally a solution for this prob... thnx buddy.. this is great.....
appreaciate your hard work....

thank you... your solution helped me!

Thank you thank you !!!
I got this issue: wmplayer won't start and when wmplayer don't work: no more ringtones for calls, no more wake up alarm, etc.
After reading this thread i went to my volatile directory. I had 999 ! folders in this "volatile" folder. After deleting all 999 items wmplayer work again.
This is a BUG from microsoft !!! I mean why these temporary folders are just emptied but not deleted after use ???

This is the best solution.
I already have the Volatile folder and after clearing all the files inside this folder, its back to its usual form.
Great! Thanks!

PERFECT!! I can't believe it was so simple

wow thanks a lot!
you saved me a lot of trouble.

Congratz xkaiser and thank you!
1 Question: How the f*** did you find that this was the problem...??? (actually the source of the problem)

It worked
Many thanks. It worked perfectly! I cannot believe it was so easy.

Thanks xkaiser
Joined the forum just to download your fix and it worked perfectly.
I've been having the problem for over half a year now and just kept hard resetting my bj2 to get my ringtones back.
Download his file, transfer to your phone and double click to run on it. Problem solved!

Awsome
xkaiser- you are the man! I've done many hard resets to fix this problem. Thanks a ton. IT works great!

Thank you so much for posting the registry edits and even more thanks for the cab file! I HATE hard-resetting my phone and this prevented me from having to take that step.

Xkaiser! Thanks!!!
Gave a warning on my BJII that the app was for an older version of the WM phone. Still worked great - THANKS!!! You are the Man.
Bill

Hi im new to this forum and im not too sure how to use the file and get it too run on my phone too fix the problem. thankyou for your help. im so close to a solution but i cant figure it out =(
I forgot to mention that the "volatile" is not in "application data"

NVM lol I did it!

Wow! Thanks!
Me too! Can't believe it was so simple!!
Thanks for figuring it out!

looking at "\windows\startup" folder will solve the problem if I understood right

I thought so, too, but nothing about the missing .exe file is listed/mentioned in the windows\startup directory. :?
Did you check the contents of the links? Maybe one of them leads to the missing exe.
If not, get a registry editor (like PHM) and check the content of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Inint key.
BUT BE CAREFUL!
Deleting the wrong value from this key will lead to hard reset!
Get hold of a copy of MemMaid. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279
It will work under evaluation for 30 days.
When you have it installed, look at the "Notification Queue" - in here are the tasks that are started when a particular event occurs - such as waking up from suspend mode.
Thanks for the info, guys! I wound up hard-reseting it, anyway - I had played with a lot of different software and had a lot of "remnants" on it, but knowing where to look in the register and learning about memaid will be useful later.
Thanks again...

Cannot execute\Windows\MortPlayer\MPNotify.exe - Please help remove!

This is the lovely message that I get anytime i bring my 8525 back from standby. I cannot find anything remaining from MortPlayer in my registry (using resco). I think the install of MortPlayer got messed up and I deleted the .zip file that was on my storage card.
I am running SPB Mobile Shell, Pocket Plus, SPB Weather & SPB TIme.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this horrible message please? Thank you.

1, welcome to XDA-Dev
2, please follow my articles / tutorials. I've often tackled this problem; see for example http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36471 (this tutorial is for pre-WM5 devices and can't be used with WM5+ any more). You'll want to get and install SKTools ( http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html ) to fix this problem.
Or you just have a *.lnk file (shortcut on mobile devices) pointing to Mort's app in your windows\startup or windows\programs folder on your device. You could check them easily from total commander and delete the one left behind. The file contains the path mentioned by you in the thread title.
Rain- thanks for the advice. I am unable to find any .lnk file that points to anything "mort related."
I just downloaded SKtools suggested by Menneisyys and will see if that helps me out. I'll post a follow-up too.

\Windows\Startup is ONLY executed when the device is reset, not when it's powered up (resumed). Please see my Safe Mode Bible; in there, I've also explained how the booting process and the resuming process works.
I DLed SKtools and did cleaning and optimizing. It unfortunately did not fix my problem. Reinstalling Mortplayer seems to have fixed the problem though!
My mistake read the post in a hurry. SKTools or any other software that is able to list events and notifications on the device should do the job. Or maybe there is a service that wants to run MPNotify at wake up event. You should contact Mort in this matter. He surely can make some light on it.
Bests,
Raul

Only the non-shareware version will see more than six entries in the notification list - this is why the trial version was unable to fix this issue.

Notification Error

I recently tried to start PicselBrowser.exe from a location other than the default one. It failed and I put it back into it`s default directory and uninstalled/reinstalled it. Now every time I turn on my Apache (WM5) it tells me ''Notification Error'' ''Cannot execute /Storage Card/PicselBrowser.exe'' which is the directory that I mentioned that I had failed to start the program from. Does anyone know how I can stop this message? Thanks.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know of a forum somewhere that would be better suited for this question?

Yes, that is a little easy to solve. I had that trouble a while back with another application I was messing with. Here is the solution.
Look into Windows>Start Up folder. In there you will probably see a .lnk file pointing to the OLD PicselBrowser.exe. Since you already moved the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file to a NEW location, then put it back in the same place. Your PPC thinks it is already a NEW file despite the fact that you returned the very same file to its ORIGINAL location. The solution is to replace that .lnk file by creating a shorcut of the NEW PicselBrowser.exe file in another folder, then rename that file to the same name as the one found in Windows>Start Up folder. The next step is a simple cut and paste to replace the lnk file.
The uninstall process probably leaves behind the OLD lnk file or notification to launch the NEW picselbrowser.exe file. So in reality, the lnk file is still searching for the OLD PicselBrowser.exe file. Despite the Uninstall procedure that you performed.
I hope I made it clear for you. Let us know if it works.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, I am a newb when it comes to technical PPC stuff. I looked in my startup folder and several others and found the following:
poutlook.lnk
sddaemon.lnk
Services.lnk
SpbMobileShell.lnk
None of these appear to be Picsel Browser, I also looked on my Storage Card, nata. Any other ideas? Thanks again!

Ohhhhhhhhh. I have another thoery and again very simple.
What kind of SD Card are you using? I would guess a 4GB one, isn't it? Basically what is happening is that, the built-in SD Card reader of your PPC is not fast enough to read the entire contents of the SD card when you turn it ON. To solve this issue, there should be an option from within Picsel Browser to delay its startup upon turning your device ON.
An alternative solution is to install Picsel Browser in the Main Memory rather than the SD Card.
Another alternative solution is to use a Lower Memory SD Card, say a 2GB SD Card, for faster read.
As a last resort, if you have MemMaid or a powerful Notifications Manager, just delete the pesky notification manually. Why does Picsel Browser need to be read every time you turn your device ON anyway?
Hope this helps.
---
Actually, I am running a 2 GB MiniSD Card and to be honest, I dont know why it is trying to activate PicselBrowser.exe each time I turn on the device. Let me clarify that it is not coming on every time that I do a soft reset, it is every time I press the power button on top of the device. Also, I got this same message when I first tried to run PicselBrowser in it's not default location, which is why I moved it back. Why it has been attempting that operation ever since is a complete mystery to me. Thanks for your help though. I would be clueless without you.
I guess the only thing to try now is delete the notification manually using a Notifications manager. BACKUP 1st is the RULE, before deleting an kind of Notifications.
Another extreme solution is Hard Reset and install from scratch. I know sounds horrifying specially if you have tons of stuff.

I'm getting exactly the same error for 'wakeup.exe' for Wisbar Advanced Desktop at the minute, I know that there has been a lot of discussion over at the lakeridge forums but most people have solved the problem by reinstalling several times.
EDIT: i think I may have fixed my problem. try installing picsel browser again without uninstalling it on your pocket pc. See if you get the message about 'all other previous versions will be deleted' just tap yes and continue to install it again. Then see what happens.
(And just as i thought i fixed it, the message appeared again)
I tried to install Picsel Browser over the existing install several times and it did nothing to the error message. I don't know what else to try, any more ideas?
Please, this is really annoying every time I turn on my phone. Any ideas?
I sitll get the same with WAD.
Hey, I fixed this problem simply by copying (NOT CUTTING) the file in question (in my case PicselBrowser.exe) to the directory that it was telling me it could not start from. Hope this helps. Cheers

Cab file downloadng?

Firstly apologies for the noob question, I'm still very new to this WinMo stuff. And secondly I've searched about the forum all day but still having problems....
I've just got an HD2 and wanting to put some of the tweaks on it I've found via this site. When downloaded on my PC I'm faced with 4 or so files, two or three perhaps starting with a 'cab' file name and the other a reg or set up file. Basically what do I then do with these files? With the phone conected via USB I went into the deice memory and dropped all the files into the memory, did a soft reset, but nothing happened, no extra feature etc. Phone just started up as normal. Sorry for my 'thickness' lol. Would welcome any advice or a pointer to somewhere where it may be already written.
Thanks.
Do not unzip the .cab place on phone and browse phone with File Explorer, click on the .cab and install to Device....
It's a common noob mistake as .cab's are compressed archives so look like .zips on computer....
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll give that a go....
after dropping them on the device you have to run them. Open File Explorer and just launch them from there. A setup will be launched usually.
Thanks for the above advice, worked a treat.
Well I've had no problem putting cab files onto my HD2, however now I want to remove a few of them. Not sure how to remove the actual thing that I've changed??? I go into the device memory and I can delete the cab itself but the 'change' still remains, such as new task bar icons etc.
Any help appreciated....
settings -> add remove programs
just like on a computer
Oh yes of course, makes sense now. Many thanks

[REQ] TomTom destroys Bluetooth function - BTTrayCE.exe etc. needed

Hello together!
After installing TomTom on my HD2 the internal Bluetooth-function doesn´t work...as far as I know it is recommended to rename/delete the following files to fix this issue:
BTTrayCE.exe, BtSdkCE30.dll and BtCoreIf.dll
But in fact I can´t rename/delete any of these files...tried with windows explorer, TotalCommander and the HD2 Explorer (I don´t know if they are in use?! according to the task mangager they aren´t)
So could anybody please upload these 3 files from a working HD2 Device?
I renamed BtSdkCE30.dll and deleted BtCoreIf.dll.
For some reason BtSdkCE30.dll was in use, but I was able to rename it.
As far as I know you leave BTTrayCE.exe the way it is.
Done with Total Commander btw.
Maybe restart your HD2 if you can't even rename them, then try again before doing anything else.
Tomtom doesn't list the software as compatible with the HD2...
So i can imagine none of you did buy it and all use a not compatible cracked version. tttttttttttttttt
So now enjoy the dark side !!!!!!

this works with almost any problem situation with tomtom...
preferable, install to memorycard on another device, then run tomtom from card without installing it, cause you put all the files on memorycard already... yes i did buy it for my touch pro...
If you are installing with a cab file,
Install in your storage card and hard reset.
Now, don't install again.Copy tomtomnavigator.exe from program folder in storage card and place a shorcut in windows programs folder.

It's working well on my HD2 without issues.
Hey there!! First, thank you for your answers!
Well, i really don´t want to make a hard reset!! TomTom itself runs very well on the device (and it runs on my device too), my only problem is that the bluetooth will not work as long as these three files have not been deleted or rather been exchanged with the untouched files .
Let me explain that: If files have been deleted, the HD2 will restore them from the rom automaticly after a reboot and everything is fine. Most people who had to handle with the same problem (TomTom vs. Bluetooth) had success with this method, but a few devices deny the access on these files, so they can´t be deleted or renamed. So is mine.
And for this reason I asked for the original files from a working rom! It would make it possible for me to replace my corrupt files...
Has anybody of you guys a few minutes of time an wants to upload the three files please?
It would really make my day!!

If device deny access to files, they cannot be renamed or deleted, you cannot replace them with other files too... (do you tried Resco Explorer?)
I have made a personalized cab of TomTom Navigator which doesn't install the bluetooth-specific files. If needed I can upload it somewhere and give you the link via PM

You mean the device ID?
You can open the ttnavigator.bif with notepad in your PC for the device details.
How I fixed the problem
I had the same problem, so I deleted the three files with resco. Two of the files will "appear" not to be deleted because they are ROM files. The important thing is that you need to have a shortcut to BTTrayCE.exe in \Windows\Startup.
Thanks for the posts!
As I said, it´s not possible to delete the files in my case...thats why i want some original files to exchange them.
...Is nobody out there how wants to upload these three little files for me? ...
I had this, All I did was launch TC, goto \windows do a select bt* delete all files, and it fails to delete most of them, but soon as I did that BT came back to life....
I can't help with the missing files as my device has still to arrive but I read that installing version 7.915.9196 VGA from HTC Iolite works without the bluetooth problem.
hey guys i could really use that bluetooth file.. i sorta messed it up too with the tom tom...
Hey Londontownguy:
Thanks for your suggestion! But as i said above, i really don´t want to hard reset. And the 7.915.9196 VGA from HTC Iolite doesn´t contain the "healthy" files, so an installation without hardreset doesn´t fix the problem.
Now we are two people including phatjesus81...andagain:
...Is nobody out there how wants to upload these three little files?...
myeah..
i cant start my bluetooth anymore because last week after installing tomtom7 i got the error and baleeted BTTrayCE.exe somewhere , even though it is in my \windows\ folder together with the btcore and btsdkce50 dlls.. cant remove those..
so BBTrayCE.exe is in my windows folder right now , and bluetooth wont start.. does that have anything to do with the other two dll's still being there or am i a booboo?
i mean, i totally removed ttn..
so now i'm totally stuck..
