Failed installs - General Topics

Hi, I've tried searching the forum but can't find an answer to me query.
I've tried to install a cab on my Omnia (for anyone considering buying one, don't) and it failed now the 6MB of free space on my phone is gone without a program showing on the un-install menu to remove to free it up again. Essentially I have converted my phone into an expensive paperweight, and it's not even very good at that as it's quite windy here today. I can't send text messages or launch any programs as there's not even enough memory for that. Any ideas on how I can make my phone usable again, if I had space to back up my phone numbers I'd hard reset but I'm not mad keen on loosing my newer contacts.
Thanks in advance, or at least thanks for looking.

It seems to be that those files are somewhere in windows folder, by usinf file explorer try to delete the files that you are not using from my document, application and data, temp and also delete the browsing history and cookies from IE or opera mobile also you cane use a program called clear temp to remove unused files you can download it from here http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-cleartemp-v1-0.html
Enjoy....

Manually removing applications from the Uninstall programs list in wm6.1

Hey there!
I wonder if there's anyway to manually remove an item in the list of installed application on WM6.1? I have a couple of annoying programs there that just won't go away. WM said that the uninstallation couldn't be fully performed in these cases, and asked if I wanted to remove the items from the list. But they are still there. I even made a search and removed all files related to those programs, and I also deleted all references to them in the registry. But they continue to appear on the list. Where the heck are they stored, I wonder? Is it text in a specific file? Suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks
Edit: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum, perhaps it should have been at Questions and answers instead...
Did you ever find an answer? Trying to remove Commontime with out resetting the phone. Darn thing locks the phone up when uninstalling.
uninstalling
Heres a solution I have found to get rid of useless programs (real player mainly) found it on the Microsoft social pages
"I have found the solution to the various posts listed on not being able to get rid of an uninstalled prog in the remove progs window. Using MemMaid 2.3 go jump to/databases/database usage, highlight SwMgmtMetadataStore and click browse, highlight offending entry and delete it. Then do and soft reset and you will find that the prog is no longer in the remove prog window. Hope this helps."
hope this works ,i have been search for the the last month to remove get scan life off program launch. i hate that i have to pay for this app, wish their were a free alternative ,wont go into this now, thank you will post my success or failure
Yes, I can confirm that it works!! Thank you VERY much for this post!! What you wrote is very helpful and seems the only way to solve this problem. I have tried searching all through the registry and removing all the keys I found and still - nothing!! It seems that in this, Windows Mobile is very different from its "big brother"
Now give me the retarted programmers who are writing programs, which can't be uninstalled !!! (boxing)
Just one small addition - the entries in the remove programs list disappeared immediately, no soft reset was needed.
THANK YOU ! ! !
Try going to hklm/software/apps and deleting the reg key for the app. I won't guarantee it will work, but that reg key records the install directory. Do a soft reset as well.
Thanks for the above tip, I have done the registry search trying to get rid of an app called point UI and a new theme which has been a stubord s%$& to remove, I got rid of the registry details and the folders and everything after I had done an uninstall (there were bits lefts) despite all this when I go to memaid and look at "installed apps" the folder including a list of empty folders for the theme (not the app itself) have not gone, I can't delete them and I can't find them in toal commander or file explorer, only in memaid and it is unable to shift them and when you click on "explore" it says the files are missing or deleted.
Problem is when I try to re-install everything from scratch it always says the previous version is still there and crashes the install.
I at a total loss on this, I've been waisting my time with it all day with no joy.
Is there anything else I can do to remove the empty folders ??
Many thanks to julioDave (post #3) - the tip was spot-on for solving my problem with a YouTube WVGA app "YouTube_Player_-_WVGA_-_800x480.rar" on my Vodafone TP2, which hadn't uninstalled properly and left an entry "MyLostBlog YouTube" in the Remove Programs list, no matter how many times I tried getting rid of it conventionally. MemMaid 2.3 (fully functioning trial software from DinarSoft), in Advanced Mode, does the job when following julioDave's instructions.

Removing that database entry can also be carried out using SKTools:
Category > Maintainance > Databases > Highlight "SwMgmtMetadataStore" > Action > View Content > highlight the offending entry > Action > Delete

missing file issue?

Since I can't post in the q & a forum I am posting here but mods feel free to move it. So I have a wm6.1 device and a Mac computer and I regularly send files, like cab and music files with out an issue. However, today I noticed that I send a music file like usual and the file is no where to be found on the devices however space about the same size as the file is being taken up. So I send another two files(one music and one cab file) with out an issue at all. Then later on I send a cab file, but I don't see it on the device even though space is being take up. This may have happened prior to this, but I didn't realize it or something. So how can A) regain that space by deleting those files not showing up, or B) find the files that are not showing up and use them as I intended to. I am loosing space because of this. Option of last(and I mean last) resort is a hard rest which I don't like to do. Thank you....

get a good file browser and search for the missing files. You may want to use a wild card search (*.cab,*.mp3)
if you still can not find them look in the folders in /Windows and /Temp or or equivalent on the device
well i am using total commader so I dunno how good that is or not. Not to mention I have done what you suggested and even searched for files added with in the last 3 days and nothing on all fronts but yet the sapce is being taken up by something that I can't seem to find on my device. Memory maid was no help either(granted I only did a clean up). But thank you.
have you tried using the default file explorer?

[Q] free space question?

Why is that if I install an application, but then decided I do not like it a small portion of my space is gone even after the uninstall and a run through with a registry clean-up software. Any way to get this fixed?
Well the best way to get this done would be to use an application that thoroughly cleans out all traces of any installed application from your device. Shortcuts, folders, customizations, Registry entries, skins, upgrades etc. Most uninstallers aren't able to get all that done. I use SK Tools and it works pretty effectively. Gives me all my space back
the main problem is that it doesn't delete some of the files from the /windows folder.
registry keys aren't space consuming (relatively speaking of course).
usually uninstalling an application DOES delete the created folder from /program files/ or wherever.. unless you've put your own files inside the folder and then you need to delete them, and the folder, by yourself.
yeah i deleted the files there too and even used sktools and such but the more space than before is taken.
well, some files are replaced in the windows folder which are necessary to other applications. since the uninstallation of an app can't bring back the old files, it won't delete the necessary files and if they're larger than the old ones.. it'll take some space.
so i guess there is nothing I could do then?

Well! you could do it the hard way. Hard reset the device which will wipe out everything you loaded and install by hand (i.e. not restore from a backup) all the applications you like and want one by one. Obviously not something one would want to do after every trial install and de-install. But after some number of different apps have been tried out and rejected perhaps it is worth the pain.

Programs on Memory Card missing after Hard Reset

Im new to Windows Mobile and did my first Hard Reset on my Xperia yesterday. Now I am missing the programs installed on my Memory Card, for example TomTom, in the list of programs in WM. The only way I am able to access these programs is through a file explorer.
How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance // Thorell

Hi Thorell:
To reuse these programs all you need to do is create shortcuts to them under the windows->startmenu->programs folder and they will reappear in your programs under start menu.
This way you don't need the file explorer to reach the programs .
Thanks! It works!
If I may ask another (stupid/simple) question: How do I make a shortcut? I solved this by copying and editing an allready existing shortcut, but I assume that there is an easier way.

@thorell,
Just hold your stylus on the application and the menu will pop up. There is an option in there that says "Send Shortcut to Programs..."
One small correction though to what thesire has written. He is right but not all programs behave the same way. A lot of programs copy most of its files in the location that you select. However, there are many programs that must write things into the registry and even copy some files in system memory. In other words, even though you will see programs in your memory card, you will not be able to run them... not even by clicking directly on the .exe. You only need to reinstall the app.
Good luck

So what you're saying means that there is no benefits except more free memory in the internal memory when you install on the memory card regarding some programs? I thought/hoped that you could install on the card in order to not have to reinstall every program after a hard reset. This time I had only the TomTom Navigator on the card, and it works now, but if I had installed, for example SPB Mobile Shell or some other programs that in my (not on knowledge based) opinion are more integrated (spelling?) in the system, it wouldn't have worked?
How do I know that a program will run from the memory card after a hard reset?
Thanks /// Thorell

you are absolutely right egzthunder1, because wm behaves the same way as traditional windows and when hard reset everything that is copied to the windows directory and registery for the program to function is lost. I definitely overlocked this small, but important pointer. Thanks.

[Q]Phone not responding CD1004

When I'm transferring media files over to my phone it has around 2gbs of space left. However when i transfer anymore media files it gives me an error:
PHONE ISN'T RESPONDING
Your device isn't responding. Please disconnect it,rstart it, then try again.
To see if theres's more information about this error, click Web Help.
Error Code
C00D124D
The only fix for this is to delete some videos in order to sync more which is a b****h seeing how i have 2gb space left. Has anyone also encountered this problem? is there a fix for it?
Bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
I haven't seen any other reports of that error.
Did you try clicking Web Help?
Did you try searching for that error code and/or error message?
If that doesn't work, you might need to hard-reset the phone. It sucks, but if something is messed up, that's the easiest way to recover.
The thing is i have games which i want to keep the saved games, and its annoying reinstalling everything.
Is it possible to back it up and hard reset it and afterwards use the backup?
Is that possible? Yes, sure (assuming the phone can be backed up, and your weird error doesn't et in the way).
Will it fix anything? Probably not. If you restore a backup after hard-resetting the phone, it's like you never did the hard reset. That's not going to help if there's a problem to fix!
Is there are way just to backup apps and contacts etc?(I know sms can be backed up)
Contacts should already be stored on your WLID, Google, Hotmail, Exchange, Facebook, etc. accounts ("cloud" services). The phone doesn't actually store them locally, except for a cached copy in case it doesn't have data connectivity at some point.
Your list of purchased apps is already known. You can use the Marketplace website to see your purchased apps and re-install them, free. However, the data for those apps will be gone forever unless you manually back up it. This process is not particularly simple using the software available for Samsung, but it can be done. You need to copy the contents of the IsolatedStore directory for each app that you want to back up to a PC. The IsoStore folder is located at \Applications\Data\<GUID_FOR_THE_APP>\Data\IsolatedStore. There will also be an IsolatedStorageSettings file that should be backed up.
You can use WP7 Root Tools to copy your isostore files to a location that they can be removed from the phone, for example by putting them in the WP7 Root Tools IsoStore folder and then using an Isolated Storage Explorer tool (there are several) or by putting them in the Mango Webserver app's IsoStore and using the Webserver (on the phone) and web browser (on the PC) to download the files. As I said, though, the tools for doing this on Samsung aren't great; WP7 Root Tools isn't designed as a backup app and it is tedious to copy multiple files\folders.
