[REQ]Latest VI Linux Text Editor - G1 Android Development

I was wondering if the Devs could incorporate this to their ROM's?
Why you might ask? Well i've always liked that editor even though most people are against it. I noticed that there was a later version when I went on my VM and decided to make a .cpp file for fun. when I saw it start up it showed a short description and a few help commands. It is much more user friendly as well.

VIM is my favorite text editor, but it's power in the zillion keyboard commands and shortcuts. But I don't think the g1 keyboard could unleash this power enough to make VI very useful on the phone...

lol, yeah maybe , but I would be lost without it

But would it be possible though? I mean it looks really cool and like I said its much more user friendly =D. Because I personally don't like nano that much. I stick with VI but sometimes it can get a little sketchy and this improved version wipes out a lot of the sketchyness.

the vi today is a lot closer to the vim of today than the vi of yesterdecade ( or two )
but anyway if you really want it badly... you have linux, get a crosscompile toolchain and compile it
remember to compile against bionic and not libc
the toolchain is prebuilt, check 'android development' on google
you probably don't need this , but it may help

It's got all 96 ASCII characters and then some. That's all vi needs and therefore all I need. Besides, vi through adb is a nice capability to have.
The full vim is a bit piggish on the RAM, though. People ask why one might need an interactive installer; frankly I'd love to not even install nano and just have vi as my editor.

Yeah im not that good at cross compiling whatchamahoosit. im a 80% noob when it comes to linux and compiling things for android. I would love to learn but I don't know where I could go to learn these things. It would be awesome if someone could do this for us....

well, maybe its just me, but I find it impossible to use vi over adb
maybe I have to configure my term better? I duno
anyway, I keep meaning to get ssh back that worked well

So Im thinking about making a poll to see if anyone would like to see this new VI in future ROM's or if its made into something that can be flashed onto the phone then it could be used on all ROM's or something.
So should I?

there's a limited vi implementation in busy box,
the cyanogen mod has it

yeap, the vi you get in busybox is fine, no point adding vim it is just going to hog space.

pah, i find nano punctuates my scripts with one or all of these ( dd,yy,pp,i,A,D,ZZ ) in seemingly random places, can't think why

If i recall correctly:
1) Nano over adb:
Hold down ctrl when you use the arrows to move around in the document
and ctrl+shift when you want to use enter.
2)Nano in terminal:
Use ball as ctrl.

nah, reconfig terminal to use left alt as ctrl, easier than the ball imo

what is a rom and why might i need a new one?

hey,
of course i know what a rom is. somehow. but why would i need a new one?
[i found everything what i was asking myself by using the forum-search.
but no answer to this essential question. shouldn´t that be somewhere
in the wiki?]
thx for beeing noob-friendly

Its just user customization, you don't really need one. alot of people just prefer them.

but why? whats better/different? there must be a reason why so many
people spend their time creating them.
i found so much software (and dont even have a ppc yet) to get the best
out of wm. thats really amazing. so what can a custom rom do, what a
third-party software couldn´t?
the one thing i could imagine right now: i like the possibility to change the
look of my device with things like "spb mobile shell". but i would rather like
to change the wm-gui itself. take away what i dont need, instead of adding
more stuff to the os (thats why i still use winXP with the old 2000-shell).
in order not to waste precious cpu- and ram-power to things i dont need/want.
thx for the answer.

to get the latest and the best
HTC takes so much of time releasing the official updates
so if you want the latest you have to depend on custom ROMs
and you can even get stuff which is not meant for your phone
like touch flo,manila interface etc

i thought touch flo is ment for my phone (it comes with it). and i thought
manila is just like a "codename" for touchflo!?
anyway... so if there is a bug or something like that and htc takes month
to release updates, the xda-devs come and create their own roms.. or if
someone would find out that the hd actually has everything hardware-
related whats needed for tv-out, he could make a rom that supports that?
and a rom is always specific to one model of a device?!? you cant use a
kayser*-rom for eg a diamond, can you?
where can i find a list of all availiable rom´s (especially for blackstone and
raphael).
thank you!!

Well for example by removing things from a rom you don't use, you can make your phone faster or have more memory.
Sometimes program such as manilla run better or faster when they are built into a rom.
Flashing a new rom means that if you hard reset, you will reset back to the rom you flash.
You can put new program and or drivers stripped from another phone (omnia, opal, ect) (this would be useful beacuse they may be newer and more improved)
Its all a matter of opinion on what you want to do with your phone, if you need help with something you are trying to get you need to giver us an example so that we can give you an example of pluses and draw backs. (there are alot of things it does and its hard to just list them)
well, thank u very much. i think i get it now. somehow like n-lite for desktop windows. but still it would be nice to have a list in the wiki with all roms, their compatibilites and main features...

Think Tank: Jit Toggle switch(10MB Ram Hack on/off switch)

is it possible to do a toggle switch or a widget for a 10MB ram hack boot.img. is it possible to switch back and fourth between boot.imgs to toggle ram hacks? like by the push of a button, add the ram hack and then remove it the same way for 3d
I believe Laszlo has a script in his rom to disable/enable ramhack....check it out.
If not...I know there is at least one rom floating around that has it.
They already have this just that devs aren't all using it yet I think one of 2 have it so you type this, that, and the third into term to switch b/t A & B.
Yes, Laszlo is the one of two developers using it currently. I have been trying to show support for it and have found one of our members who is currently working on adding it into spare parts. Why so few have chosen to include it is beyond me... Laszlo v1.3 is the only current Rom available here using the ramhack switch. hopefully the other guy will get it added to spare parts and then I could see MANY developers using it then...

'parse'? there's nothing you can do. you cannot switch kernels without rebooting the phone, period.
I doubt you can enable/disable JIT without a reboot either, since it has to close all programs and rebuild them without JIT.

Depending on how well the JIT is coded, it could possibly clear cache and recompile the applications via a toggle switch, but like I said, I doubt the beta Dalvik JIT is that complete :/.

[ROM] [Espresso 2.1] Cattui Varietal v2 Final "Fastest Sense Rom for the HeroC"

[ROM] [Espresso 2.1] Cattui Varietal v2 Final "Fastest Sense Rom for the HeroC"
MOVED TO HERE!!!!!!!
Awesome. I'll be testing this build and reply w/ any bugs/problems by editing this post. Looking forward to this a lot.
Edit: Just finished setting up. Its runs really smooth.
Only things I've found so far is during setup I couldn't sign into my Google account. I got an error reporting a connection couldn't be established (or something close to those lines ^_^'>)
Edit 2: I just wiped and reflashed and ROM and my Google Account setup just fine during setup. Maybe just an isolated incident.
However once done w/ setup I went to Accounts & Sync and set it up that way.
Also, the font looks really nice imo except when its small it becomes rather difficult to read. I've also noticed the text in the search box is misaligned. I'll be running this tonight and tomorrow and post anything that I find. Looks awesome.

Nice looking. It seems like a themed stock sense.
Not complaints... just constructive criticism:
Font is too thin especially when small
No cell signal
haptic feedback comes and goes
needs to come with some kind of file browser
during sdcard mount it keeps returning to htc screen
WOW, forgot how slow 2.1 was. even OC'd to 748(it is smooth once OC'd)
once airplane mode is engaged it gets stuck
statusbar icons backgrounds don't all match statusbar color
Didn't have time to test gps, sorry
I wanted to try this even though I hate Sense. I pissed on yer "I wanna be super dev" thread, and I wanted to show I meant no harm.
Overall, it really seems like a slightly-themed, rooted stock build. But it loaded, no cell, no mobile data, but otherwise seemed to work smooth.
You should base this off LiquidSense 2.1.1 for some real speed.
Screenshots, please.

I had a go at this idea quite some time ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812893
I abandoned it because I didn't know how to unlink everything. What I have learned since then, is instead of just removing any apps that you do not want to include in the rom, try flashing clean to your phone and using adb to uninstall apps (adb uninstall [app]). Afterward make a nandroid, and pull into the rom editor to repack. I never was able to learn many of the app names to uninstall as some of them are different than the .apk name.
Need any help lemme know!
And feel free to download that rom to see what I did and where I went wrong

On rom cooking in Windows.... meh. I hate to say it but I despise cygwin. It doesn't seem like I can ever get ANYTHING to work properly when using it.
When I cooked my roms, I always used either ubuntu or xubuntu in a virtualbox, or ubuntu natively booting to it. It's actually worth it to do it that way in my opinion, because it's easier to copy files back and fourth, less hassle installing stuff, don't have to worry about being root to cook or do things (besides adb shell sometimes), you have the power of whatever your favorite cli text editor is (nano for me) built right in... It's just a beautiful thing. To top it off, if you have it on a memory card or external hdd and things are a little laggy, you can take it and use it on a bigger powerhouse (I had to do that sometimes when my laptop was really sluggish, I would put it on my desktop for full power).
Oh, but as far as cooking a kernel in, basically extract your kernel, look at the update-script and just place/replace the files as to where it would be if you flashed it. That's what I did.

Try this.... Dsixda's Rom Kitcen
Or if you want to get crazy you can install Oracle VM virtual box on your windows 7 machine and then install unbuntu on the vm, and then run the rom kitchen on linux (the way its meant to run) or even compile from AOSP source. I like this option since cygwin is kinda hacky and dual boot is a pain in the butt (Wife and Kids arent to receptive to a Linux machine)

What is invovled in making a custom ROM? just wondering, like how hard is it?

Could I just modify stock rom, create it into nvflashable version or zip for cwm and say it's a custom rom?for e.g overclock, UI changes etc
if it was easy everyone would do it lol
It takes a lot of knowledge and skill, it may not be difficult in the way that roofing a house is difficult, more like difficult in the way that doing a millionaire's taxes is difficult (i suspect, only just now starting to learn c++) more brain work, very little physical labor (besides extended times in hunched position with cramping hands behind a screen with your eyes crossing and head aching lol)

Technically yes but no one would download it. If all you do is UI then its a theme not a rom and the OC is done in the kernel which is very difficult to edit. Custom roms are about making something new. One has to have different features than another for it to be successful. You need to invent new things and add personal tweaks for it truly to be "Your" Custom rom
I would say it ranges from easy-peasy, lemon-breezy to extremely difficult that only rocket scientists and jedi knights should attempt it.
For what most people want to do, it's pretty easy. I think the hard part for the average person is having the mindset to take things apart to see how it works. If you just want to put your name on a rom, it will be extremely difficult because the goal will get in the way of your curiosity. If you get freaky with the command line, your curiosity and imagination will lead you down the rabbit hole. Of course, the path to the bottom of the rabbit hole is lined with bootloops and bricks, but you can gloss over that detail until after you set the bridge on fire and jump off the middle.
Regarding what makes a rom, a custom rom, I would think that you would need to have source code somewhere. If you are taking someone else's rom and adding someone else's kernel and adding someone else's themes, then that is just a modification. You didn't make (-j16) anything, but instead just added some things together that were all ready made. If you patch the kernel or compile the rom from your own source, then that's a custom rom.

haha i just wanna do something like paul burton with his ics early port from the source code, i'm not that good, but a fast learner hahah,
You need a working knowledge of java (in my java textbook it says android is based on java and a skilled java programmer has little trouble programming for android), you need the various sdk's, for java, android, you need an android virtual environment on your pc to test your android apps and roms out..you want to start with theming, making simple apps..also need to know how to compile kernels which probably means you need a working knowledge of linux programming..starting from ground up, you are many months of study away from having the knowledge to build a rom imo. That's what im doing too...
If you want to jump start your journey- purge yourself of anything Microsoft, Windows, or closed source. Then you will truly be open.
Install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server edition. Use the force, let go of the mouse.

Sooooo im stuck trying to learn java and linux on a windows os..i need to study linux more, but that would keep me from studying java and other languages (c++, c#, for example)

[Q] ICS On-Screen Buttons Help?

Hi, i have been looking at tuorials for decompiling and re-compileing framework-res.apk in order to add the ics on screen buttons to my phone. I can get the framework-res.apk decompiled, i can make the required edits in the xmls, but when i go to recompile with aapt.exe or even just apktool, i get monstrous errors in the log. this may have something to do with my ADB setup, but it is very confusing to me. i would like to know if anyone would be willing to make the edit for me, as recompiling the apk is not working for me. i will email/PM the framework-res.apk to anyone who would like to do this for me, I am only 14 so i do not have all that much experience, although i am not a noob, more of a power user. (I am a flashaholic) my current ROM is TripNRaVer's CyanogenMod 9 build 8 i believe (having issues with 10) Thanks everyone

Being a "flashaholic" has nothing to do with being able to develop or make changes.
I drive a car daily, doesn't mean I can take apart an entire car and rebuild it in a day.

Haha btw don't take my comments as being a jerk. As for developing, might take a course some where or read every developing book you can find.

aapt and apktool seem to be hardcore sensitive to it's surroundings. I had to re-install Ubuntu because some conflict was screwing around with the apk rebuilding. I had tried on Windows, Mac, Mint, everything possible. After the reinstall it worked, (with a ****ton of errors of course), created some handicap file but all I needed was resources.arsc.
If you do it and a new resources.arsc is compiled then that's all you'll need, you won't have to worry about anything else

thanks for that but it was part gibberish to me, no offense intended I don't have my own computer as I am only 14 and I have been trying on my parents laptop, but I have no idea where to go from here so, is there any possibility I could email you my framework-res.apk and you could make the XML edits? I can give you a link to a tut for what I would like done if you have the time
