MyTouch Trackball questions and ideas
Alright, I hope i don't sound like an a$$hole, but I, for one, am SICK and TIRED of my MyTouch not making use of the THREE (R,B,G to make white, correct?) LED's under it's trackball. Now i have a few questions,
1. Why hasn't it CM included trackball lighting/changing colors in his ROM? If it was done for the N1, how hard would it be to do it on the MyTouch?
2. HOW was it done for the Nexus? I noticed that "Trackball Alert Pro" just changed the LED color (top of phone, in the ear speaker slot), therefore, shouldn't it be as simple as to "tell" the app to use the MyTouch's trackball instead of the Nexus' trackball?
Now, the lights on some Motorola's (the Razr series, the Z3, V360), (the BT LED's, charging LED's, flashlights, etc.) were controlled by FLP files (basically .txt files) that you could edit manually or an FLP editor, so HOW is the Nexus' trackball light controlled? Is it a script, file, is it the kernel? Couldn't the same concept be applied to the MyTouch?
Also, i remember on the T-Mobile forums, a user called "BreakTheCycle2" (here's on XDA too, i think), developed a "script" to change the trackball light colors, and i sent him a PM, but he never replied.
Now, PLEASE don't be hatin' (lol), but I'm a n00b and these are just IDEAS that are running through my head.
A white led is a white led, I strongly doubt there is any way to get primary colors out of it.
N1 trackball's led is a multicolor led, it's just different.
Do you really think someone would put three leds to mimic the action of one?
I've seen a picture of a MyTouch motherboard, there are three LEDs under the trackball.

This is barely related to development. I am hoping that you are looking to develop a resolution to getting multiple colors. But if this is just a thread to complain about the lack thereof then I'll move it. Please explain what you are hoping to accomplish for posting this in a section dedication to the advancement of our devices other than complaining about the lack of because that could have been posted in General.
On another note since I haven't seen the three led's that you've mentioned I cannot speculate on whether this is or not a possibility. Ask yourself this... have you ever seen a color other than white on your trackball? So I'm inclined to say that it's not without modification of the hardware... yet I've been wrong before. But the MT3G has been out for a long time and it's popped in everyone's mind at least once. I'm sure that someone has looked into it and if the possibility was there we would be using it by now. Kind of like the getting bluetooth to work issue for Sapphire 32b Hero rom's. Until recently it was considered impossible. Yet it was discovered that you only need the 32A radio and kernel (compatible rom) to make it work. It took time, research, trial/error, patience and a few bricked phones to make such progress. This was for functionality. What you're wanting is only cosmetic. Not a real high priority.

Well mines is orange and I literally mean orange whether it's lit up or not.
manufacturer's defect I guess.
Yours is orange because the thin film they use to protect the board from dust in that area is orange and it probably wasnt placed properly and its covering one of your led's or touching the trackball. Which also means different color trackball led's are very possible. If we can code the led's to work seperately from each other then we can have multiple color led's if we use a different color film on each of them!!!!!! If we cant seperate them then pick a color film u want and place it over the led's and there ya go. I will try to replicate yours tonight and try the one color led as mentioned above

Me and shawn1224 may have accidentaly uncoverd the age old mytouch mystery. I am posting this here because I am not a developer and we need a dev. to try and seperate the 3 led's under the trackball from each other for seperate use. Below is a cut from the thread posted above. I will post an in depth later tonight of how to change the color under the trackball as described below but we still need a dev for the coding if possible of the led's. Thanks

I went ahead and researched the led by the ear speaker. It is 1 l.e.d with 3 diodes inside of it. Each diode is a different color. The varying colors come from changing the amount of power sent to each diode. Pretty much just like mixing paint in a bucket. Giving a diode more power will increase the color emitted. Lower power to another diode to change the end color of 3 combined l.e.d.'s and still equal the same amount of light emitted by all 3.
Ex.
Red diode wattage=.3333333 of 1
Green diode wattage = .3333333 of 1
Blue diode wattage=.3333333 of 1
1 being the total light emitted/or power sent to whole l.e.d. lower one and raise another but always equal to the max amount of power the led can handle.
Or just buy a new trackball - I got myself a red one.

What i should have mentioned in my first post, is that i would like this to be the end-all, be-all MT trackball thread, and what i meant by starting it, is if ANYONE has any ideas or apps to test, i would be happy to test them. And contrary to your post, it WOULD be very functional, because Cyanogen doesn't have trackball lighting for notification like the stock ROM does, and it would REALLY help in my eyes. Imagine yourself in MY position. I usually have my phone in my lap during school, and i hardly ever see my notification LED blink when i have a (maybe) important message waiting. I mean, the trackball LEDs are SO much brighter, it would catch my attention immediately, and I'm sure people other than me (maybe even yourself, sir) can agree.

I (and hopefully other people other than me, apparently i could use some support) would like a free alternative to the trackball color, as well as i NEED insurance/warranty on my phone, because i simply don't have the money for a new phone if i break it while taking it apart.
Also, you guys seem very focused on color, that is just a MINOR thing to me, i want to be able to set different lighting patterns, how long it blinks, the interval for waiting notifications, i personally don;t care if its white, red, orange, purple or PINK for god's sake.
THE ONLY WAY KNOWN TO MANKIND (i think)

The thing about CM not having the same trackball notification is due to it (the glowing/flashing/breathing) being HTC framework.
If HTC can set light patterns and make them trigger on certain events, so can we.

I think that the whole point of his thread was to change the LED color from the settings... not by removing the trackball and replacing the colored film beneath it. I'm all about development for this... but we don't need two threads about it. Let's pick one and I'll combine the other one with it.
not a problem. I just posted in here so a dev could answer the question about splitting the 3 led's up. Im not sure if they are all on the same circuit or can be flashed seperately. I know we will never get anything but white out of them. I guess keep this one open cuz the other one isnt gonna get anything accomplished. thanks binary

It's better than having to decide on which one to move to General.
Thanks a ton, Binary...so anybody have any ideas SOFTWARE-wise? Maybe taking "HeroLED" or "Trackball Alert Pro" apart and "pointing" it to the MyTouch trackball? How would we go about doing something like that, maybe talking to the dev of TAP?

I am now on Nexus #4, serious issues with first 3. So #4 looks totally different. The colors are washed out and the UI seems weird. Such as when hitting the bottom of s scrollable screen, the yellow highlights aren't smooth but sorta jagged at the top. The icons at the top of the display (wifi icon, 4g icon, etc) are green. I'm almost positive the first 3 had white highlight not green. The stock nexus wallpaper also seems a bit weird up in yhr right corner. I'm running 2.3.4 but I'm almost certain so were the others since they were all purchased with s week. Please leave me some feedback guys, I'm begging ya. I can't see myself walking into the store to exchangeyet again. Oh and the keyboard is now two tones of grey which again I never noticed on the first 3. The actual letter keys are lighter grey than the function keys.

Well Which carrier? start there...did you root it..have u added a rom??
ALSO my NEXUS HAS GIVEN ME SERIOUS PROBLEMS.. WHICH makes my phone not functional. my problem is that the DATA connectivity has lost completely can brows or any simple thing that requires data.. tried numerous things, such as updating my profile which Fails, PRL, which fails, Every ## method i can think of. I also tried going back to stock VIA ADB... still no data, its as if i had a bad activation...AND SPRINT TECH are totally of no use..they cant even realize that the # methods are different..I am wondering if i need to enter anything in the settings??searched and searched google and i just think that the support on the device is so poor that google almost fails to recognize the problems in actual writing...Now im stuck wondering if i should go back to my EVO again!!!
I'm on sprint too and also wondering if I want me evo back. I do like the phone though and pure Google is awesome. I'm nit one of those people who just looks to break balls and get return after return simply because I'm able to. I've also had to purchase a new $30 zagg with each exchange so I'm out an additional $120. I can't imagine walking back into the store for my 5th nexus. They also said after 3 there not allowed to do exchanges for the same device, its time to get into a new one. I have read all the issues that the last couple of updates has brought to the color profile of the Nexus but I'm pretty sure the others were all on the same software. Can anyone confirm when 2.3.4 rolled out ota?

If you've read the forums you'll know this is a divisive point: some think the over-saturated purple-heavy colour space used prior to 2.3 is better looking, and some think that the correct colour space is, of course, correct. You make your own mind up. Read the other threads on the topic.
OK so after a bit more time with the phone here's what I'm finding.
I can't remember what software version the first batch of nexus units had but this one is running 2.3.4. I've read that one if the updates has totally screwed up the colors on the Nexus S but this seems to have been one of the updates the TMO version got, I think the ns4g shipped with 2.3.4. Still need someone to confirm this because if my first 3 were running earlier software then its possible that's why this one looks very different. It doesn't seem to be s faulty display because its really only the UI that's affected. Photos sbd such do not look washed out. When outside the deep dark blacks and vibrant colors come back, head indoors and the washed out display is very noticeable. Could this be an issue with the auto brightness?? I could really use some help here guys, especially if someone knows for sure if yhr Sprint version has been updated to 2.3.4 or if it shipped with 2.3.5. Thanks
Most of your questions are found by Googling or searching in the forums, but ill tell you what I know.
The green means that you are synced. White means that you are connected to internet but you're not synced ie you get no Google services. Gtalk, email, etc etc. You want it to be green.
As mentioned above, the washed out colors are from 2.3.3 and on. I think they changed the colors a little bit in 2.3.4 but they will still look "washed out" to someone who came straight off 2.3.2 and before.
Also, the washed out was not tmo specific. It was changed in the 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 OS which means that anyone with those versions will see this. Nexus s is a pure Google phone so the updates are all the same, not network specific.
If being in the sun makes the screen brighter or changes how your screen looks, then yes, that is the auto brightness trying to save you battery life. It does the same to me too. It's annoying I know because sometimes on cloudy days it doesn't brighten all the way but I still can't see the screen as clearly. You can change the brightness of the screen though.
Hope this helps.

Zaggs have a lifetime warranty and even if you have to return your phone, take the Zagg off first and then go to Zagg.com and go to support and get a replacement. They will charge you shipping($3 I think) and as long as you send the old one back in within 60 days you will incur no more charges. Returning your phone is one of the options covered under their lifetime warranty.
Anyone know why T Mobile is only launching with the "gradient blue" version and not the micro arc oxidized version that is available internationally?
I have fallen to like the gray version a lot more so I will be getting that but I once was set 100% on getting the red/black one. I'm sure someone people will be disappointed that the red/black version won't be on T Mobile.
*T Mobile at MWC Feb 2012 announced a gray version only, so MAO failure is not the reason for only one color.
Anyone here have the gray version? Thoughts on it? Is it aesthetically pleasing? How does it feel in the hand or outside in the sun? I want to hear some opinions on it before I get it next week.
Hey, I got the grey a few days ago and I absolutely love it; the colours are great, especially the blue accent around the camera and the beatsaudio logo.
Also, no scratches on it =)
The looks is nice for both of phones, but Both of them have one downside... Black have chipping problem, while Gray is slippery
I was at a local T-Mobile store today looking at the dummy unit and the guy told me that they will be getting the black version in the beginning of June. He even checked with his boss when I asked him more about it. I have no idea if its true but they seemed pretty confident. I'm not sure if I want to wait though...

Interesting news...Good for the people who want black.
For myself I am getting gray. I can't go another month waiting for the One S when the Gradient Blue color is already flashy by it self. It would be a nice change having a gray based color phone for once. I have watched literally dozens of videos on Youtube regarding the One S, Form factor is nice, Sense 4 is spectacular, I'm practically obsessed with the phone. Waiting an additional month would be like consuming chilli peppers in the desert, I won't be able to handle it. That being said even if both colors were to be released I would choose gray now.

I personally like the black version, I think it looks a lot nicer but I'm concerned about the chipping. I hope that the version that comes to T-Mobile doesn't have this problem.
Having said that, I'm not sure if I want to wait... Playing with the dummy unit makes me want the phone even more. I will probably just get the phone but time will tell.
If you have questions about the AT&T version post here and I'll try to answer.
First few observations:
Lightning fast, there is no hesitation doing any action. It's a bit surreal coming from a Captivate.
Camera is awesome.
Thin, light, but solid build, looks good and doesn't feel cheap.
You can't turn off LTE. If you go into Settings -> Mobile Network, there is no option for "Preffered Network Mode" like on the Galaxy Nexus or Rogers HTC One X. Really hoping to get this fixed via OTA or custom ROM as there is no LTE anywhere near me.
Stock browser doesn't have a dedicated "tabs" button. You have to press menu to get to your tabs. Kind of annoying, not sure if that is just an HTC thing or if this is the first phone like that. I'm just going to start using Chrome since it has a tabs button.
Sense 4.0 is nice, it's not obtrusive and actually improves on the stock ICS experience instead of replacing it altogether. I love the WebOS style recent apps list. It really looks nice.
I read some people saying they were seeing some yellow wash out on some screens, and I think mine is OK, but certain apps, particularly games do have a yellow tint to them, but stuff like the homescreen and google maps look great. Temple Run has a pretty clear yellow tint to it when compared with a Galaxy Nexus running Temple Run. Not sure what to make of this. Maybe something else that can be fixed in an OTA.

They only had one in the box and I got it. It is a freestanding ATT store in a relatively small town outside Atlanta. The salespeople there are commission based, so he had motivation to sell it to me. First thing I even said to him was "You can't sell it to me today though, can you?" He said he could, so I had him ring it up. I just kept waiting for the bomb to drop that his system wouldn't let him or something.

Find a commission based salesperson at a po-dunk ATT store that doesn't really pay attention to the ATT corporate materials.

Although they probably wouldn't sell it to me since I'm buying for full retail and they probably wouldn't really make any money off me that way.

Upon further inspection and comparing my One X with my Captivate, I believe that I do have one of the screens that has the yellow tint to it. Google maps looks fine when viewed on it's own, but when you hold it side by side with another phone you can tell that the colors are a little off. They are nice and bright, but just not the same hue as my captivate. Pulling up the same web pages the difference is pretty clear anywhere there is green or yellow. Blues don't seem to be affected very much if at all.

I could be wrong, but not sure comparing to the Captivate would be the best way to tell if your whites are tinted. Do the whites on the Captivate's Amoled screen have a blue tint? Been a while since I had one, but I recently had purchased a Note (returned and waiting for the One X) and the whites had a very noticeable blue tint to them.

You can always do the screen test app and see just how white your whites are, or if they're yellow.

Which screen test app?
How would I know how white the whites are? Is there some standard to compare it to?
No problems on mine, all my colors looked true testing with screen test app.
So I called into about a million AT&T stores to see whether any of them had the HOX in stock, and I was able to get one employee to reveal that they did! The problem now though is that he's not willing at all to sell it to me...
Is anybody here an ex-AT&T employee or knows the ins and outs of the company policies and would be able to help me procure my HOX early?

Well since someone posted on Engadget with picture to verify that they were sold the One X early I doubt you will find anyone willing to sell you it early. Best bet is to pre-order and it will come May 4. AT&T can't be happy about it.
Can you pull the notification bar down from the lockscreen like in stock ICS?
I have been having issues with replacement Galaxy Nexus' having incorrect color calibration and I kept complaining to Verizon.
They offered to send me a different device, and considering the Galaxy S3 has better hardware, I was thinking of taking them up on the offer.
The only thing Im really holding out on before I make my final decision is for the dev community to get the bootloader unlocked.
So do you guys think I should stick with my Nexus or have Verizon send me a Galaxy s3?
UPDATE: After talking to multiple customer service reps, they told me the only thing that they could do for me was update me to the DROID RAZR...I told them that that is not a "comparable device" and all of the multiple service reps still wouldnt budge. They even went as far as to tell me that their system WILL NOT allow them to upgrade me to the Galaxy S3. Anyway, so I was fed up with the customer service B.S. and so I emailed their executive office. After about two days, I received an email from them asking for the account info and some contact info. They told me that under normal circumstances they wouldnt do this, but she told me the issue I was complaining about with my Galaxy Nexus was a know issue, but at the moment, they dont have a fix for it. She also told me that the customer service people were lying. That the system will let them do it, but it is just a little more difficult. The only thing that I am kind of knit picky about is that theyre sending me the blue one, because they dont have any white ones left, but its whatevs...at least I am getting a free phone and I won.

Even with the locked bootloader the s3 is still pretty amazing. It seems like everyday someone in the community is making something for this phone to make that much better. Ive never owned a nexus so i cant compare but im sure u would love this phone.
I upgraded from the GNex. You won't go wrong here. First, the TW interface is really nice in my opinion. The battery is insanely great and there was no custom kernel on the GNex that gave me even remotely the battery life I get now. The camera on this phone is amazing. It has a bigger display. Better processor. I say go for it you will not be disappointed.

Thats a very good question. In my household we have both the S3 and the Nexus...and I cant say which one is better. I personally have the S3 and love it, even with the locked bootloader theres still soo much you can do. The Nexus is a fantastic phone on its own, but if you have the nexus and crave the development...then stay with it. Or find someone with a S3 and switch phones for couple days
The final decision is yours, but:
While the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, I feel if you have the opportunity, you should get the Galaxy S3. While the locked bootloader isn't it's greatest feature, it's roaring development is. There are devs out there working extremely hard to unlock the bootloader on this device. And even though the bootloader is locked, the XDA community has managed to flash custom roms/kernels onto the device using the awesome development of Kexec.
And even without root or any modification to it's firmware, Samsung's TouchWiz interface isn't too bad and it doesn't affect the phone's performance much either, because the phone itself is quite powerful.
However, if you want a phone that was made for development, then the Galaxy Nexus may be best for you.
So my next question is ...if I got it...Pebble Blue? or Marble White?

We have both colours here, with a white Amzer Shellster case+holster for the white, a black set for the blue.
The white has more of a uniform, understated, contemporary aesthetic in any lighting, and almost feels iPodish in terms of first impression, but is far more approachable. That is, I feel current iPods are not only chunky (which is OK), but their thick metal band around the sides and boring uniformity make them look like pieces of industrial equipment with a white face tacked on. By contrast, the Galaxy S III in white presents as more of a fully sleek and "professional" device, overall. The white case we use keeps that overall feel relatively intact.
The pebble blue is brushed and offers different chroma depending upon the lighting and angle, so there's more interest in its somewhat variable presentation. You can't always pin down how it looks during daily use because it doesn't seem to uniformly reflect ambient light sources from the combination of its brushed colouring and rounded surfaces, which is kind of neat to me. There is a possible purplish hue that can come off the surrounding metal-looking edge and Home button at times, which I see as a positive: it adds to that meandering notion of its colour values and personality. Generally a darker phone, sometimes comes across as medium/medium-light in tint and even tone if light is hitting it squarely (and, depending on the type of light source).
My highly subjective impressions, at least. I can offer pics, if interested.

No need to attach pics, thankyou for the detailed analysis...I went and checked it out the the VZW store and I think if I switch to it Im getting marble white.
I still havent called Verizon about getting the S3...but now that the bootloader is unlocked I am going to...the only thing I am afraid of though is that they are going to tell me I can't get the S3 because it is more expensive than the nexus... I know I can fight the fact the specs on the RAZR are inferior to the Nexus, but how do I fight the specs on the Reazound if they try to offer that to me?

I'm not sure they'll make that switch for you from a nexus to a s3

If you want to fight the specs on the Rezound, say the screen on the Rezound is "remarkably" smaller than that of your Galaxy Nexus. I put "remarkably" in quotes because you can stress that word when explaining the differences, even though the Gnex has only a .35inch gain on screensize compared to the Rezound. Screen size does play a factor when some people buy a phone, you could use that to your advantage.
I came from gnex an don't regret it one bit. I was hesitant because I flashed roms for the nexus all the time looking for speed and battery life. Guess what, this phone has that stock! I love it. Rooting an customs roms are just a nice bonus.
