I just read on http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/symbian-os-is-now-open-source that symbian is now officialy OPEN SOURCE!
Maybe a port for the Raphael thAt would be great then we can run XDAndroid maybe Maemo and Symbian? thats just awesome because i kinda mis symbian from my N95 with ngage 2.0 and such....
But if someone put some effort in it im sure we could run it from our phone...
I'd love to help but im just not an developer
and there is any possibility to run ngage 2.0 on win mobile or android based devices?
I wouldn't count on it. The article I read made it sound like it was only Symbian S60 v3, which is the non-touchscreen smartphone OS, not v5 which is for touchscreens or Maemo.
I could be wrong though.
also symbian UIQ is supporting touchscreens

Well, you sure are wrong about one thing - Symbian is one OS, Maemo is another one. There are no similarities between Symbian and Maemo OS except the fact that Nokia is developing both.

UIQ doesn't exist anymore, there will be no devices based on it.
But symbian is linux based right? maybe we can set it up like XDAndroid with Haret.exe and startup.txt ?
but the n95 has 333mHz processor and a videochip, the raphael has 528 mHz and also a videochip.
so maybe with some coding we can let symbian use our drivers properly.
but i dunno if thats possible on our raph. i just love symbian

Is it possible to flash a Blackberry and change its crappy OS for a nice Windows Mobile ROM? I mean, the Blackberry Bold is a great piece of hardware and it could be a great device if it would be possible to run Windows Mobile on it.
Any brilliant ROM cooker from XDA tried this already or thinking about trying it?
Thank you.
No, it's about impossible to do that. If WinMo were open source, maybe, but it's so complicated and device specific that you would have to make the bootloader and many other complex and low level portions of the OS from scratch. I've never ever heard of anyone porting Windows Mobile to an existing device that didn't come with it. Sorry, but it looks like you're stuck with Blackberry's OS.
And what about Android, or Maemo? There was a rumor about Android for BB...

Hypothetically it would be possible, but you'd need a large enough demand for the devs to get involved. First, they'd need to reverse engineer the device as to know what internal hardware it uses and if that can be compatible with Android/Maemo. Then, they'd need to modify the kernel to support the device. All the while, they'd need a Linux bootloader, like HaRET for Windows Mobile, so they could test and make adjustments accordingly.
Thank you Dave. Hard to believe nobody did it already...
And by the way, would you prefer a Nokia N900 with Maemo over a Tilt 2 with WinMo 6.5?
Maybe Maemo is more stable...

While Maemo looks very promising, and I'd love to one day get my hands on something comprable (maybe N900, or even xpPhone), I'm a pretty hardcore Windows Mobile fan. Plus, XDA-Developers is great, so I'd probably pick the Tilt2 simply because I like hacking these devices to their very limits, an area where Windows Mobile never fails me. However, I'd say that a person's smartphone preferences are extremely personal, so what may work for me may be disappointing to others. If you can play around with either in a store, I'd highly recommend doing so before purchasing either device.
After having 2 phones with Windows Mobile, I ended up with the conclusion that WM is very unstable, very slow and it crashes too much. Sometimes you don't get a call simply because the system crashed without you noticing. Maybe the processor has to be like 1000 MHZ+ to handle this very heavy OS.
I would suggest you to wait for the Omnia Pro with the sliding keyboard that comes with a 800 mhz processor instead of Tilt 2 with a 528 mhz which is a bit old now.
Maemo seems like a more stable OS and it can also handle VOIP. The only 2 OS that have a native skype client are the WM phones and the Nokia N series like the N900 with Maemo.

No, the iphone has a native skype client that only works over wifi, not over 3G, so its worthless. You can use skype over 3G only if you use Fring.

It's working just great with 3G Unrestrictor. I always conduct a lot of Skype calls over 3G.
All you need is jailbreak your phone and purchase 3G Unrestrictor.

Is there a way to do the same with a Blackberry Bold and make skype possible over 3G as a VOIP call?
What OS do you prefer: Android 2 or Win Phone 7
how will we know? no-one got ttheir hands on either yet?
its a completely subjective and pointless questin (IMHO)
google is the wolf in sheeps clothing. they call MS the bad guy while they own the world's info.
I'll take a windows HTC phone since this community will support it way better
Considering no one has WM7 how do you expect to get a decent tally from the poll at this point?
With that being said - IF the older windows mobile software will run on WM7, then I will stick with windows mobile simply because there are more apps avail.
WP7S looks much sexier than Android.
imagine if possible, what you chose?
The Android 2.x has multitasking (rather than The Android 1.x which has no multitasking)
In contrast, the Windows Phone 7 has no multitasking (while the older Windows Mobile/Phone has multitasking, including the oldest Pocket PC)..
And I REALLY NEED MULTITASKING, so I choose the Android
web 2.0 crap
i hate social networks...
stay on windows phone classic
hmm update:
android gets me
still hatin social networks....
currently the chances to be able to move any current htc device to wm7 are much much smaller then moving them to android 2
wm7 is not a follow up for wm6.X it's a different branch's which don't run wm6.x programs and require hardware other wm6.X devices don't have
so chances are if you really really like wm7 you need to get a new device
and hope that many developers head in that direction rather then android, iphone or nokia n900
because old pocketpc apps don't work

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 features a completely redesigned kernel, which supports over 32,768 processes, up from 32 process support of the previous versions. Each process receives 2GB of virtual address space, up from 32MB.
well, seems like the only choice we've left is android.
& wm 6.xx is terrible.
Judging from what i saw at MWC 2010 i'll personally stick
to winmo "classic", that's what they are calling WM6.X now.
WM 7 looked very lame and boring to me. Look like it's
bound to be a major setback for MS and a significant
growth in the Android arena. A change to radical.

1.6 DOES multitasking.
Anyway, Android is better than WM in many aspects..
From Touch Pro to HTC Hero. Too bad it has the same qualcomm crappy procesor, but it's faster than WM and way more handy (notification bar simply rocks).
And about WM7.. I don't like it. A total downgrade.. IMO. RIP WM
So yes, i vote for Android 2
RIP Windows Mobile... I originally got you because you were so hackable and customizable, but this new version just sounds like an iPhone clone two years too late....
Android is definitely going to be where it's at for the phone hacker community (it seems...)
i will not be surprised if someone in XDA-DEV managed to cook a rom for touch pro that will support windows mobile 7..even now, with their help,we are able to boot our touch pro with android OS..just wait and see..
Can someone try to run MeeGo and port symbian to android phones? MeeGo shouldn't be hard, as it's just a linux distribution. But they may perhaps be problems with it, and everyone must see symbian ^3 on HTC phones before Nokia N8...
!!!PLEASE!!!
Why would.you want this exactly?
MeeGo for coolness and.. just to try it out, and symbian to own nokias(N97,X6) that cost the same as desire and etc. but are twice the slow.
Now all Nokia N series(including Nokia N8) will have meego!!! Come on someone try it! Any other phone MUST be 2nd phone with MeeGo ever!!! Nokia N900 boo!!!!! ONLY 600MHZ CPU CAN'T BEAT CURRENT HTC(and other's) SMARTPHONES!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
follow this thread... i want to try meeGo on my htc (magic)..
if i can , i want to try a multiboot with other o.s. can i do it ??
Yes you should be able to do it the same way as all other linux OSes. You must have ROOT access and download MeeGo version for ARM or try for x86
if Aiphone can boot 2 o.s. , i think that android phones can boot others o.s. but i don't know how i can try...
Is kind of useless to use something like meego on HTC handsets. First of all, wait to see the first phones on the market with this OS.
From my point of view, MeeGo is just another marketing thing from Nokia, because Symbian is running low right now. But N8 is going to have Symbian^3, with minor modifications (in UI terms) by comparison with Symbian^1.
A good project might be booting Android on Samsung i8910. Impresive HW, pointless SW.
No no n8 will have MeeGo.
And I want to show off that the 1ghz CPUs own nokia's lazy 400-600Mhz "smart"phone CPUs.
Hello , XDA-developers and other members.
I'm new here, I registred because I have some questions about Android OS.
I have Nokia N95 phone, and I want to port Android to that phone. I searched a lot , but one said fake, one said that can do , I don't know what to think.
So my question is can I port Android to Nokia N95 ?
My phone (N95) can run Android , but I don't found way to do it.
Is there way to do it ?
Thanks in advance, all xda-developers.
Trinty19.
i dont think it will be compatible
No it couldn't
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Not it can't

No, you can't. The handset was specifically designed for Symbian. There are no compatible drivers or etc. I have heard of this b4, as my dad used to own an Nokia N95. I just think it's a clever UI demo cobbled together so he can get posts on youtube.
Offtopic: Or.. who knows, maybe he is a brilliant scientist that works for Nokia now and making millions )) We may never know.
IT IS POSSIBLE: CPU, GPU DRIVERS ARE COMPATIBLE, not like Spooky_Ghosty said. But if you want to port Android, you will need to compile Linux Kernel (you need a PC running Linux based OS), you will need a program that can boot Linux Kernel on Symbian (something like HAReT for booting Linux on Windows Mobile, but for Symbian here is no program like HAReT). It is very hard, but it is POSSIBLE. Why do you haven't bought Siemens in "old times"?
2004's phone "SIEMENS & HTC Blue Angel" can run Android easy;
2002's devices SIEMENS 600, 710, 718, 720 can run Android easy;
but 2007's Nokia - very hard to run Android on it.

Hey Guys does anybody know that if lumia 710 can be dual booted(windows phone+android os) as htc-hd2(can check on youtube)??
Developers like ultrashot,lucifer3006,dft has blessed us with huge utilities of wp7 but can they make "THIS" happen????
Pretty unlikely. You'd have to make an Android firmware for the Lumia, which would require a bunch of drivers that aren't available. The HD2 is relatively easy to port to because there are lots of Android phones from HTC, plus people know a lot about the HD2's internals and can use tools like HaRET to study it. None of that is currently true with the Lumias.
That said, somebody could surprise me. Just don't hold your breath.

LOL DUDE!!! Symbian Devices from Nokia has locked UBOOT bootloaders, so Installing android on them is not possible. Maybe you are pointing at Nokia N9 which is not a symbian phone, and it runs on MeeGo OS which is Linux-based... Like he said earlier, Installing android on Lumia is not possible yet, but let's wait for our friendly devs to fix that... hehe
