Is magnetic clip case bad? - Nexus One Accessories

I'd heard before with the MT3G that, because of the compass, a magnetic case is bad to use with the phone. Not sure what amount of truth there was to that statement, but I would assume if it were true that would be the case with the N1 as well.
Can anyone smarter than me let me know? I've found a really nice vertical case but it uses a magnetic clip. Curious if It will mess up my compass/phone.

i usually keep magnets away from any electronics...but thats just me

Same here. Don't use magnetic belt clips on your phone. Even tho there is no know issue of the cases doing any damages to the phone its not recommended you use one.

I use a holster with a magnetic clip, have had no problems thus far.

I wouldnt trust anything magnetic.
You might be perfectly fine with it, but there's reason to believe you also might not be. If not for fear that it could create some irreversible hardware problem, it could very well mess with the software too; Droid's car dock uses a regular magnet to switch the phone to car mode. Google hasn't released the N1 car dock yet, but the phone has unknown docking sensors on the bottom that look like magnets to me. If the magnet on your clip is unintentionally switching your phone in and out of car mode all day, you probably wont be very happy. I know I wouldn't.
I know it doesnt have a clip or anything but I freaking love the case the N1 came with. Its perfect for me and its all I need.

I know that problem, my cousin has a droid and it keeps switching to car mode everytime he puts it in his magnetic holster. My nexus one has never done that once. I beleive the dock connector on the nexus one does not work magnetically but rather electrically.

That's actually good information to know, thanks. I was quite concerned when I heard about Droid's magnet issues and thought it would be the same for N1. Since Google hasn't released any accessories yet as they promised I naturally assumed N1 would function similarly in a dock. Good to know you've had no issues.

(Universal) Dock useable with protection cases?

Hi there,
I am looking for a charging dock that accommodates my DHD without me having to remove the protection case (Case-Mate Barely There).
Does anyone have a suggestion for me? I just need it to charge the device, no further USB connectivity features needed.
I guess the usual Desire HD docks are all fitting so tightly that a case won't work with them, right?
Anyway, if you have any tips for me, I'd appreciate it
I'm looking for the same thing.
I'm signing up under this one as well

I've just received my Spiderpodium which does the job and is futureproof.
Its basically a rubbery type material which you can bend into various configurations and I am using it in the car right now and it works wonderfully.
I have bought a black one, it may not look as nice as custom made docking stations however is very practical.
Here's a link where it is demonstrated on an IPOD Touch however, I am using it with my DHD with a Otter commuter case attached and it works brilliantly.

Spiderpodium looks nice, wish there was something like that, but with the option of those sticky, sucky things that most gps use to attach to windows etc

My main reason for going for the Spiderpodium was because I did not want to get the windscreen "sucky" thingy. With this it leaves no marks, just sticks into the grills of my Mk5 golf which has the grills at a decent level to use sat-nav at a good viewing angle. It also holds the Wifes i-phone 4. If there is a need to, I can easily remove it from the car and use as a dock too.
Nice but I need one that I just slide in and it will charge my phone without need of connecting usb cable manually

Yup, same here - I just want to plug my phone straight in without fiddling with cables..
I have one of those cheap Chinese-made docks, I used a dremel tool to make the recess a bit bigger. It's not pretty but it fits in nicely.
I would be amazed if someone made a dock for a case. It's hard enough to get a dock for a phone, which sells millions, I would be really surprised if someone made a dock for a case which sells only in it's thousands.
Take a look at the Clingo -

It does require you to plug in the USB charger, but as I say, I think you'll have to live with that.

So, has anyone found an active dock that will work with a protective case on the phone.

Touchstone and metal warning!

Got my Touchstone direct from HP today and first thing I tried it with the TP in it's case, good news is it charges fine, the bad news is the case has a metal stud on the back where it swivels and that got red hot in a matter of minutes! I mean hot enough to blister my skin and melt through the plastic protector I hadn't got around to taking off the Touchstone.
So.. warning!!! - Don't get any metal between the TP and Touchstone, they do not mix!
Anyone that knows how induction works is aware that the first rule of using such a device is that you never, for any reason, get any ferric metal between an induction coil and its target.
Which case are you using, just to warn anyone else?
I have the stock HP "snap on" case, and didn't experience this problem.
Will have to remember to keep my phones away from the dock, so it doesn't mess up their magnetometers...
The case is a generic leather look one off eBay, the one that acts as a stand and allows the inner tp section to swivel 360deg. I've since removed the pop stud from the inner section altogether since the touchstone acts as a stand and the outer can still be attached for transportation protection.
The point about ferrous metal is valid, it just didn't occur to me at the time and probably wouldn't to many others, hence the post.
It's a good thing you posted. I have no doubt it most likely saved several people from experiencing device destruction or possibly a small fire.

But most people don't know how induction works (or even a microwave). I'd hope that the cross-section of these people and those who have purchased a Touchpad+Touchstone doesn't have too much intersect though.

Has anyone tried a touchstone charger with a zippered case? (Something like this.)
No but it should be ok in the horizontal position as long as the zip is at the top. Of course if the zip is not ferrous metal then you have no problem apart from trying to balance the thing on the charger in that case.

? I need something that will hold the phone where I can see it for GPS and music selection while I'm driving.
A lot of people think I'm crazy for sticking something on my phone but I seriously LOVE this thing I bought ( http://www.steelie.com/)
So you pretty much put tiny dongle on the back of your phone, which sticks due to a strong adhesive and that dongle has a magnet that attaches to a ball you can stick on your car too.
I've had for awhile on my SGSII and when I removed it, it came off with no sticky residue or anything! Once I get a back screen protector for my nexus 4 I'm sticking it on there as well.
Here's a picture of my car with the car ball. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732688/in/pool-steelie
and here's another http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732114/in/pool-steelie/
It's awesome because I literally walk in my car, scan the NFC sticker and stick it on the ball. SNAP on. It's adjustable since its a ball you can move it around.
The only downside was the price. It's a bit expensive but seriously, I cannot have chosen a better product.
I feel like I'm an advert for them but seriously. It's awesome. Watch their youtube video! They started from kickstarter too (random tidbit)

Have you thought about attaching that magnet to the back of a case and placing the nfc tag inside where the back of the phone would be?
It would be a good way to keep the back of the phone clean and still have a way to attach it to your car.
Steelie looks really cool, but it's quite pricey for what it is. I'd mount the phone ring on a case rather than right on the back.

That's how I had it on my SGSII, attached it to a TPU case. It worked pretty good too but the back is so nice on the nexus4 that I didn't want to cover it entirely so I was gunning for a bumper+backscreen protector.
Either way the phone attachment comes off readily with no residue issue when it comes to it

Yes, this exactly. I want an inductive charging mount.
The steelie looks interesting, but would probably render the induction charging useless. I wonder if the large magnet on the back would fight with the induction current from the charger base?

It is. I just sold my SGSII and phone socket is sitting on my desk until I apply it on my Nexus 4. They give you lifetime replacements for the sticky part that goes on the back of the phone socket, so I had them send me a new one for free.
All I need is my back screen protector and my bumper until I apply it back on
I'm using an Arkon MG114. It was cheap and does the trick. I miss my GSII t989 car dock. I don't have the bumper on my phone yet, though I think it would work.

I have the magnetic plate behind my case and the main magnet in my vent. The other day my gyroscope got stuck and all my photos were upside down. It's apparently common and all you have to do is tap the back of the phone. The magnet does not turn the screen on or off.

I use a magnetic mount and it works beautifully.
I have a Scosche magnetic car mount and a Spigen Rugged Armour case. I placed the larger metal plate inside my case with the adhesive to the inside of the case (not phone) and it works very well. Has not fallen. I have not had any issues with signal, GPS, phone turning off, orientation, etc. Have not tried NFC to be honest though.
I used a magnetic car CD mount without any issues. I was able navigate with Google Maps.
I duct-taped the metal plate to the inside of my Adopted case.
This is the mount I am using:

I feel ya, bro. It seems just as untrustworthy as that hoe Sally Rottencrotch who lives in the next building and wants to show you her kitty . . . there's a voice inside your head saying "Don't do it man, she's dirty". A magnetic mount sounds like it would be asking for our expensive ass phone to go flying after the first big pothole you hit. I was looking into a car mount a few weeks ago and found this: The Best Smartphone Car Mount.
After researching the options for ten hours, surveying more than 1,000 Wirecutter readers, and testing about thirty models, the smartphone car mount we recommend for most people is TechMatte’s MagGrip CD Slot ($11). Although it may not be what you’d envision when you think of a car mount, the MagGrip CD Slot proved to be a simple, compact, and affordable option that’s a great fit for most cars. Compared to the other models we tested, the style allows for the easiest insertion, removal, and repositioning and does not sacrifice a secure hold. It also places the phone at an ideal position that doesn’t block your view of the road.

lol, 10-4 on Sally. My main concern was mostly the fact of having a "strong magnet" directly touching my device or case. NAND, sensors, processors, etc... all concern me when it comes to strong magnetic fields :/ Maybe I will buy one for my wife and test it out on her device first

There's really nothing to worry about.
I have (as well as many others) been using magnetic holders for years now.
It's no longer an issue since there aren't any devices with spinning discs.
I wouldn't worry about the phone flying off the mount either if you have it attached properly.
I've taken my previous car to the track multiple times and it held on fine.

i have a magnetic one that i had for my other phone that was already in my car. being on project fi, i got onto project fi chat help and asked about the magnetic car holders. the rep told me that while they had no data to support or not support it for the 6P, they would recommend not doing it due to the way the GPS and battery are positioned in the phone. take that for what it is worth for you...
Was tinkering with a magnetic car mount today and noticed that if the magnet touched the bottom back of the phone (right by the USB port) the screen turns on.
Any one have an idea why that would happen? Found it interesting, since that's not normally where the magnet will contact I'm not worried, but curious if any one knows what's being tripped.

Built in feature to activate the screen if a special case is used, notably the ones with a flap on the front cover. Once the front cover is flipped open, screen is automatically turned on to welcome you. You can trigger the same thing you witnessed by placing the magnet on the screen side, near the bottom. Magnet comes close, screen locks. Magnet moves away, screen activates. Same feature on a lot of other devices from years past actually, such as OG nexus 7 and whatnot.
Don't know if it applies to the 6p, but the OG moto droid had a dock that used a magnetic that automatically launched "car mode" when docked to the magnet.

I have one, got it on Amazon for like 8 bucks shipped. The metal disk that goes on to your phone is not magnetized, just metal so that it sticks to the magnetic base- so you don't have to worry about carrying the magnet around all day and erasing the credit cards in your pocket, etc...
Haven't noticed any effect on the sensors when attached, and I use GPS everyday. You would think it would mess up the compass, but I guess I don't use it while attached...

i wouldnt rely that much on magnet ones. Unless you have a very thin cover (which i also dont recommend). If you have to break all of the sudden it falls. I personally use this type of Universal mounts:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liger-Unive...134995?hash=item3f64350153:g:6dUAAOSw1DtXJAlt
But mine is black completely.
It allows you to charge the device at without compromising position, it also allows you to rotate it 360 and more than just rotate it you can actually move it like the mirrors of your car. It has some protections to protect your car, your phone, and to prevent the phone from falling. And it can hold up to a 7" width phone. I think that even i bit more than 7 inch. I dont know if the one i sent in the link is the exact same one im using however it looks exactly the same. the hard sponge in each side allows you to implement pressure on the sides that will prevent the phone from falling. You can pretty much adjust everything to your liking with this mount. I dont know about others similars to this one but this one has been for me the best out of all i have tried.
It also should work on any vents of any car. The reason i dont like the magnet ones is because it usually requires for you to paste a sticker and it limits yourself to only the devices who have the sticker. However, what happens when your phone is dead and for example your friend has his phone and he/she lend it to you to put the gps or put music?
Of course, try to find one that is closer to your location if you want to pay less, or from Asia.

I'm using a generic 'air vent' style magnetic mount, with the metal plate gaffer taped (duct tape in US?) inside a 'Spigen Rugged Armor' case and it sticks/works fine. Done several long journeys over 'normal' european journeys (i.e. roads with no offroading).
Will be dependant on model, common sense and not driving like a ****, obviously...

yeah but since we dont know how anyone drives until we see it, i cant say how he drives. Also, the cover you are talking about is slim in comparison to what im talking about. Of course, he is on his liberty to buy the magnetic one. Everyone has different experiences with different mounts. LOL. I personally have tried 4 and none of them worked as good as the one i bought last. Also, in many occasions im driving with people that lend me their phones for multiple reasons. (that is my case only). And my saying is better to be prepared than sorry for every single thing.

Agreed - this is very much a case of suck it and see. Just saying that this particular generic version works fine in normal driving conditions with a entry branded 'rugged' thickness case, rather than a thin one. If you are likely to mount curves or drive on particularly bumpy tracks experiences may differ.
Thanks for the input guys.
Currently I'm using a Poetic Atmosphere case. So I'm assuming it's pretty thin. I might give the magnet option a try.
For me, it is almost always Brodit, have a look at these. I have a Brodit ProClip installed in my car, and instead of Brodit device specific holder, I have installed Herbert Richter adjustable holder set up onto Brodit ProClip as I have more than one device.

Good luck! And your welcome
I've gone for this.
Car Mount Holder, LanshionTM Universal MagGrip Air Vent Magnetic Car Mount Holder&Cradle for Apple iPhone 6/6 Plus, iPhone 5S 5C 5 4S 4, Samsung Galaxy S6 S5 S4 S3,Galaxy Note2/3/4,Nexus 5 4 and All Smartphone (Black) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B013ACUCZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_UN.wxbEAMJSF3
I'll let you know how it goes.
I've always disliked having things in the way of my view, I had a hard time finding a mount I liked and the wouldn't be too distracting while driving. I ended up getting a Cellet cup holder mount and I love it. Definitely keep it in mind if you're still looking around.
Hi all.
I too am after a good car mount. I have just come from the G3, and used a Kidigi "clamp" style car mount. Specifically fitted for the G3. Even if you had a case on your phone, you could remove a part of the product and it would fit snug as a bug inside whatever that saying is... Sadly they do not make any for the G5. Here's the G3 one if interested to see:
http://www.gadgets4geeks.com.au/kidigi-car-mount-charging-cradle-for-lg-g3
As you can see, it has the clamp on one side only. A much better design this way I think.
Anyways, the closest they have is this universal one (with a USB Type C charger): http://www.kidigi.com/index.php?route=product/product&productlist_id=7&product_id=120#.V81GIPl9670
I'm really bummed there's no car mount specifically for the G5 out there. If anyone finds one, please post it!
I think I'm going to end up going for a universal clamp style for the windscreen / windshield. I don't like the magnet kind, nor the ones that sit on the car vents.

So far I like this the best. Do you know how the G5 WITH the Hi-Fi Plus module would fare in this mount? Also, I am guessing the G5 cannot have a case on while in this mount, right?

I have the Spigen case with the HR mount and it works great. Downside is the USB needs plugged in every time vs my Brodit active charger for M8. Saying that the flexibility of the HR outweighs the hassle of plugging in the USB cable. The HR mount is an universal which is spring loaded to grip multiple phone shapes and sizes. Seems very solid after a couple of weeks use, hopefully it'll last, no reason for concern atm.

If you have a CD slot in your car that you don't use... I would recommend this mount: https://goo.gl/vF8ZUh
I've been using it for the last two years, and I love it.

Would you be able to show me a photo of your setup with the G5 wearing the case and in the mount?
EDIT: I just realised I would not be able to use the Hi-Fi Plus module with this mount. I would have to drill a hole in the bottom, which I wouldn't have an issue in doing...
Hey all. So is Brodit the only manufacturer making specifically LG G5 car mounts? I'm searching high and low and all others I find in my searches are technically "universal" car mounts. Boo! I may have to go without a case for my G5 and get a Brodit mount. Not sure how I feel about this!
There's a magnetic model from Anker. Has anyone tried?

Right from Wal-Mart. By FAR, the best magnetic car mount I've ever used. Also comes with two magnets. Get it.

I'm looking for a couple of mounts I can use in our cars. I would like universal ones that both me and my wife can use (she's just inherited my G3).
I like the idea of the magnet ones like this Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291750206879 but I don't know how good they are.
Thanks
