short description of the problem:
sending of emails would fail whilst you could receive emails.
I had the same problem. It can work normally for weeks and suddenly stop and again eventually start working again....
Applying this patch will fix this. I tested it and it works
Overview from microsoft.com
Overview
This behavior is associated with a feature that was introduced in Windows Mobile 6.1. It provides a way for users to send e-mail through an alternate outbound e-mail server provided by their mobile operator in the event that the default outbound e-mail server becomes inaccessible.
The problem occurs if a mobile operator doesn't use this feature, and therefore doesn't supply a value for the alternate SMTP address. When the mobile device fails on any attempt to connect to the e-mail provider's default SMTP server, Windows Mobile 6.1 automatically loads the value for the alternate SMTP server—which in this case is blank. The e-mail account configuration details are then corrupted, which results in loss of the ability to send e-mail with that particular e-mail account.
With this fix, the feature is patched to ensure that Windows Mobile 6.1 takes appropriate action when it detects a blank value for the Alternate SMTP server.
Note: After you apply this hot fix to your mobile device, the messages that have been sitting in the Outbox folder of your affected POP and IMAP e-mail account(s) will be sent. Since these messages could be out of date, you might not want to send them now. You can keep these messages from being sent by navigating to the Outbox folder of these accounts, and then either delete them, or move them to another folder. On Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional devices, you can access account folders by tapping the folder drop-down located in the upper left portion of the message list. On Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard devices, you can access account folders by pressing the Menu soft key, and then selecting Folders.

Mine did the exact same thing after I was prompted if I wanted to run it.
Go check your add/remove programs and see if the KB is listed there; on mine it was after the first reboot. Maybe the installation only takes a second and soft resets right away?
i think it was intended to do this..
microsoft always wants you to reboot your device/pc after updating..
my also soft-reset but afterwards the problem was gone
I tried to install the CAB file, but I get this error.
This update cannot be installed on this version of Windows Mobile. Current: 6.1 AKU 1.5.0.0 Build 20273 Platform 2
Anyone knows what the problem is? Thanks!
Anyone actually have this work? I've been having this problem since day one... I hard reset today and installed the hotfix immediately and it still happens. 1st email using imap on gmail will go through, the next will fail and that's the end of it. I have to delete the account and re-create to get one more email through before it starts failing again.
I have already tried this patch and still cannot send email, the error says something about making sure my user information is correct and try again.
I am thinking that it is my email client (AKO..military) that will not allow sending from imap/pop in order to keep tabs on security.

I am also facing the same issue. did u get it resolved?
Make sure your carrier doesnt have a different SMTP setting for mobile phones. Some do some dont.
I have this issue on my laptop, when i tried to send from my home internet i can not use and SMTP for a specific account, but at work I can. When we investigated it, we found that our work internet connection allows various SMTP's all on the same service, but on our home we could only use the home SMTP. BOth internet connections are on the same ISP it was jsut a setting they have for work and home connections that we had to work around. It might have some of the same issues on mobiles.
Did anyone managed to get it resolved? I have this patch installed but still cannot send email. There is no SMTP problem, I just can't send it :/
The only way I've ever been able to resolve it is to delete the account, and then created it again.
I've had the same problem.
I tried the microsoft patch AND it didn't work!
I can receive email but cannot send it.
When we changed our ISP at work from Orange to TalkTalk we couldn't send anymore using our Orange SMTP, apparently, when you send email, you can only send through your Internet Access Provider's outbound (SMTP) mail server.
So I tried the same with my v1615
Instead of using smtp.talktalkbusiness.net, I changed it to send.vodafone.net (I'm on vodafone obviously) and it works! (so far)
Possibly, you may be able to find your networks smtp?
I just wonder if there is a way of blocking/preventing other people with different sim-cards to access my mail that I configured on my phone?
Example:
I configure my mail on my phone with all settings like username and password. Then I accidently lose my mobile and someone finds it. But this guy who finds it want to use it for bad things. He can't get my PIN password so he puts his SIM-card into my mobile. Therefore he can access my mobile and go into my mail that's already been set up. So now he can read everything in my mail and even send mails from the phone.
How do I prevent this?

Change the password on your e-mail account if you know that your phone is lost. He cannot see it or change it from the device, so once you change it, he will not be able to access it anymore. Also, you can set a personal password lock, which is independent from the SIM card. Finally, there are a couple of apps that can do certain things if your device is lost/stolen. They are in the D&H section.
Thanks But I tried to whatch my received mails with my sisters SIM-card, and it worked :S so if I lose my phone... the person can read the mails that I've received... and that's not good. Do you have any solution?
Btw, I'll check the D&H section!

Mostly everything you can use will depend on whether the device is connected to the internet, which might not be the case depending on the knowledge of the thief. You could probably add an app for tracking in case the phone is lost or stolen though (if your device is GPS capable, that is).
One more thing..
When I want to receive my latest mails - like the one I've received within three days ago. I go to my inbox and select receive/send. But what it does is that it recieves every single mail I got in my "real" inbox. And that's not what I want. I want it to just dwnld the newest messages. Because if this works... I can manually delete my messages in my mobile Inbox, so it doesn't store the mails to long. Because if I lose my phone, the theif will only have accsess to around 5mails

I think that there is either a setting or an app to automatically purge the saved e-mail if they are in the device for +3 days or so. I will look into it.
Thanks, but do you know what's the problem is with that I get all my messages from my inbox when I press "receive/send" in my mobile inbox? Because I've set the setting to just get the mails from 3days..
just a thought, to prevent that you could just put a password on your phone? So the person who takes it cant access your phone let alone the mail etc.

Had already suggested that, but the OP seems to have different concerns.
Okay, but how do I enable such a password?
AND I also wonder this:

just wanted to see if someone know the answers
I am not sure whether I really understand you but as suggested previously why don’t you use “Auto lock” with a password.(settings--->Lock..)
You can set after how many minutes or hours the device will be locked. After that time run up you need to input your password in order to able to use or see anything on your device

Hmm, it's more like an app that does the following:
Locks the phone (require a password) when turning on the phone. In that way, it doesn't matter if you have an extra SIM-card, because you can't access the phone. And then it's just a hard-reset that will restore the phone, but then my problem is solved - all my private files etc is gone with the wind
exactly! Even better if you use Microsoft exchange server mail then you don’t need to wait until the guy make hard reset you just simply remotely wipe your device
Use the lock function so go to start/settings and look for lock. Choose either 4 digit or more complex and set lock time as you wish. - i dont really knwo what more you would want because even if u switched sim, you would still have to crack the lock code.
Haha, so it was that simple ^^
Sometimes easy settings seems to be complicated but thanks for your replies
But the question about my email still remain :/
When I press "send/receive" my phone downloads every single mail. But when I go to Inbox-Tools-Options-My Account-Edit Account Setup I've already set the "download message" to from the past 3 days. What's the problem?

No probs, easiest solutions are always the best ones
mm not sure why that is doin that, setting the period should only download the relevant days...... what email provider u using? pop3? gmail? all work fine with me and i use exchange too.
If you cant sus it out, i would delete your email account, soft resest and set it up again.

mm that is strange, with those setting you should not be getting older mail?
Might sound odd, but have you tried a different setting, so like 1 week, or 1 day mail, save it and soft reset?
If not i will have a dig around.
somehow it seems to work now :S so I just hope it remains like that
I use Windows Mobile 6.1 with Pocket Outlook to access my POP3 account. Until some time last year, I was able to send and receive. Then, for reasons unknown I could no longer send, maybe starting in autumn or winter 2009. The error message says (I translate from Japanese): "Could not send one or more messages. Verify that your network is functioning and that your account settings are correct, then try again."
I finally got around to calling Softbank and they suggested that I look at the port number. Well, the Pocket Outlook interface doesn't actually have an option for port numbers but I suppose that "domainname.com:587" should work. 587 is the port number that my regular Outlook is set to. I tried that on Pocket Outlook now but it doesn’t change anything... Same error message again.
The Softbank guys just keep tellng me it's not their problem, I should change the settings. So... what do I do next?
I don’t think you can change the port number for pocket outlook. flexmail will give you the option. Which email provider are you using?
However Softbank has definitely block the ports and you might need proxy settings. therefore roll the ball back ask them to set it up for you
Bulldog, thanks. You can imagine that Softbank customer support isn't supportive at all. My email provider is Verio. In fact, this is company email (my own company) and others in our company have no trouble with this. They have Softbank phones, use the same settings that I use, use the same SMTP server and have no issues. You can definitely specify the port number as I described. "domainname.com:587" is definitely OK but this doesn't solve the issue. I called my company's IT support guy and he gave me access to his personal SMTP server. Again, I cannot send. He thinks that my specific phone or email account for some reason must be blocked by Softbank....
Alex,
I have forgotten to ask...are you using the original ROM or cooked one
Besides Have you ever test your device with another POP email account and settings (i.e like Gmail)?
Still uncooked. ANd now I am going to do exactly what you suggest: do a lot of testing.
1) Same POP3 account on a different Softbank phone / SIM that I will borrow from a colleague
2) On a different Softbank phone with my own SIM
3) With somebody else's SIM on my own phone
And, as you suggest,
4) Different, unrelated POP account on my phone/SIM
Any other combinations you can think of?
Hello Axel,
The Test procedures (1-4) you thinking of are solid. They should give the answers.
Cheers mate
Ha! I haven't gotten my hands on one of my colleagues' phones yet but I dug out my old X01HT, put in my SIM card, fired it up and tried sending from there. And guess what: no problem, with the same settings I have always used (don't need to specify any port)!!! So what does this mean? My guess is that something with my X05HT is wrong. It's not Softbank per se and it isn't Verio either. So it's got to be the device... Concur?
Yes, Now I would I also think it is the device. If you haven’t yet delete the Pocket Outlook Account and re-setup again, do that first. If that did not help then I am afraid you would need to make hard reset after backing up all your user data.
Hard resert did it
Hello Bulldog, one thing I did not think of was to perform a hard reset. The lady at the Softbank shoi did that today as part of their routine to get phones ready for repair. When she did that I figured might as well try once more and blow me down, that did it. We still don't know why it didn't work before the reset but at least it now works!
Thanks again for your help!
hello, many times i cannot synchronize the mob with hotmail account. when i tap send/receive, although mob tries to syncronize my mails, it cant... why is that?
does it work sometimes or never?
What message does it give when sync fails?
there may be many possible problems so it is important to start eliminating possible causes.
without more info its hard to say but some possible reasons could be:
incorrect setup info (username or password or imap/pop setting)
phone not automatically connecting to data service when trying to send/receive, so check you have internet before trying to receive
your carrier maybe blocking mail port, test over wifi?
My family is not very savvy with computers/phones.
my mom has a Samsung galaxy S4 from a while ago and had her email setup for her on the phone (outlook/Hotmail). however, she has forgotten her password and cannot reset it because (stupidly) she had set the alternative email address to be of another email account that she has no access to!
The emails work fine on the phone though.
question is, is there a way to extract the email password on the phone? is there another way to change the email password without knowing the original password (i.e password reset)?
thank you.
