[REQ] Backport of android 2.0 browser - G1 Android Development

I was wondering if anyone has attempted to backport the brower from 2.0? I installed a 2.0 rom and I really liked the browser but the rom drained the battery too much on my phone.
sorry if this is the wrong thread

I second this request. I was really feeling the browser from 2.0, but 2.0 didn't have working camera, nor did the resolution appear to match the g1. I would love for the 2.0 browser to be "backported".

Nearly no way as there are many new things in the WebKit.

I agree too. The 2.0 browser is possibly the only feature that makes me want 2.0+ (the others are either just eye candy or slight interface changes).
I'm waiting to see if HTC will do 2.0 (or higher) for dream. I don't see the point in doing the backporting work if HTC will release it later on, so just wait. If they decide not to, then I'll try to backport some features.
Right now I'm only interested in 1. Show overview when loading page 2. Browser2 style address bar (maybe a bit more functional instead of just being a place-holder), 3. change bookmark/window view layout to the one in browser2.
Any other requests?

The webkit core has also been updated in master and donut-plus-aosp (and eclair ofcourse), so I could build the browser off of donut-plus-aosp and then pack the updated donut browser along with the libwebcore from that build. It should work on any donut rom.

A.Doubt it they probably will discontinue it by next year, supporting the new line of Andros while giving some attention to Magic.
B. May i request the price of the new phones to be 300>X

heh, funny. I'm not exactly backporting the browser, I lack that level of java knowledge, but what I can do is improve some of the 1.6's browser's features to mimic those of the 2.0 browser. I was asking for requests that I could possibly add to the 1.6 browser

i like the address bar the most. and it needs multi-touch

yeah the address bar is awesome. it shows itself up top but if you start scrolling down it gets left up top and so does not take up real estate. this is something the iphone has done as well and its a really good implementation.

I think he's doing a full backport. I'll still go the upgrade route as a learning experience.

Wow.........too bad we cant get this on Dwangs rom yet.
That browser is so much smoother and faster, period.
Cyans newest rom has it included. FYI

Yeah, you can. Just ask the maker of "the fastest donut rom on the planet" to backport it from eclair onto his framework too.

He is actually not touching Eclair till the official dump is presented

Jesus Freak Browser for Hayruko builds???

Can anyone work ok getting a multi touch browser to work on 5.0.2h?????
you would be my hero forever!!!!!!!
afaik the browser in the Haykuro builts is newer and much faster than the old one. You would have to compile the multitouch patches not only into the browser but also in the dalvik vm.
btw, i always found the multitouch browser function to be choppy and not as nice as on the iphone. Never used it really. and I dont get why somebody wants to do that.
To me... the newer builds seem slower as far as the browser goes. I have to agree about multitouch... completely useless in Android. They will never be able to fully implement it anyways (legally).
I also liked the multitouch browser. On a page with a few lines of smaller text, I could just zoom those words, and zoom back out really easily.
I was also always hopeful that someone would get it working with maps, and make that gallery demo into a real app. I found that demo really impressive!
The main reason that i was hoping to get the multitouch browser is it seemed faster and i liked the ability to zoom with multitouch it worked great for me!
Just wait for the next jf update, the cupcake update will be out soon and will be just as good. Im sure jf will incorporate multi touch into cupcake.

the browser seems slower to me also. and it always jumps to the top of the old page before moving to the new page, and when you presss back it has to reload the entire page again...

I'ed rather have double tap zoom anyways... lol
The browser in Hayruko seems much faster to me, especially when switching to landscape mode and back and when minimizing it and going back to the homescreen it doesn't take any time to refresh like it used to.

[ROM][7-14-2009]PhotonMod_Hero (v1.5) [Ready For Daily Use]

Ok, I've been trying out a lot of Hero ROMS and I'm always disappointed in the speed, or lack thereof. Each time I have found myself flashing back to a stable Hero build and then customizing it to my liking (see below). This release is mainly for my own sanity, to save myself the time and effort of getting back to a setup I prefer.
For clarification purposes, I will be referring to these builds as PhotonMod_Hero1 and PhotonMod_Hero1.5
Just understand that v1 is based on LeakDroid's SuperHero3 build and v1.5 is based on JACHero 2.63.
**UPDATE 7/15/09**
As requested, Re-upped PhotonMod_Hero v1 without the Asian IME (pinyinIME.apk). Just be sure to choose English on the first screen of the setup wizard.
PhotonMod_Hero v1:http://www.mediafire.com/?l3inmmtmjzz
NOTE: If you have random Asian characters showing up in odd places, power off the phone and turn it back on. This seems to only happen before the first reboot.
(Reminder, this one does not use AppsToSD. It is basically SuperHeroV3-MAS minus Rosie and all HTC widgets. Also minus swap. and with a few other teaks.)
Also,
Here is "Lite" version of PhotonMod_Hero1.5. I removed the Weather app and widget, and Retro Clock widget.
PhotonMod_Hero v1.5:http://www.mediafire.com/?nyhyfzzyiom
****UPDATE 7/14/09****
Bluetooth is NOT working in any Hero build at this time
New Build release: PhotonMod_Hero v1.5 - Lite
Based on JACHero2.63 with the following changes:
**Changelog - PhotonMod_Hero1.5 - Lite**
-Removed ALL HTC Widgets
-Replaced HTCCamera with one that works (No sideways image)
-Replaced HtcMusic with old Music app from non-Hero builds (b/c that one is a resource hog!)
-Replaced Rosie with standard Launcher
-Removed Teeter.apk/odex, Stocks.apk/odex, DCS_Stocks.apk/odex
-Removed (commented) Swap partition section in a2sd.sh as I want to try this build out without a Swap partition.
-Added section in a2sd.sh to move a "wallpaper" folder to the FAT32 partition on your SD. That folder contains the wallpapers from the Rosie wallpaper gallery (See Below)
-Added AppsInstaller
-Added Custom Lock Screen
-Added a few "Gems" to the Ringtones/Notifications
To use AppsToSD, make sure you have your SD card setup with Fat32/Ext3 partitions. You will not need a third Linux-Swap partion with this build.
To use new Wallpapers, at the Home screen, press Menu -> Wallpaper. Then choose Albums. You should see a wallpaper folder containing 5 wallpapers.
Thanks to JesusFreke, Haykuro, JAC, Cyanogen, L3wish and the Leakdroid crew, Meltus, and all the other great Devs working to give us the experience we want from our phones.
Rename to update.zip and flash as usual.
you really need to try jac 2.63 with a freshly formatted card and a linux/swap partition. its quite a thrill
Can u put some pics
might give this a try on my other g1...just for fun
i want som pics plzzz !!! and some comments of the one who flashed this .
Fully Functional?
As in Bluetooth working?
Why in the world do you need pics...its hero, duh.
And I have to agree, even 2.63 is quite slow (swapper and a2sd)...I might have to try this one out (though I heard SHv3 had many things not working...).
Thanks for the contribution anyway .
@Shaquiel Harris, NO BT works as of yet. JAC is getting close I guess but NO HERO BUILD HAS BT YET!
Working on taking some screenies for you guys...
be posting in a few...
hmm seems interesting.
wonder how this one works.

Here you see I have changed the background to one I liked from another build. I also have installed the Retro Clock widget, Weather Channel widget, and a few apps (AndroZip, Last.fm, and I really can't remember which else). Right now I currently have about 10MB free (not running apps from SD)
I don't see the bluetooth is working? What do you mean "fully functional"? is the led work, too !?

Ok, I just tried Bluetooth for the first time and it does not turn on. This was my mistake. I do not use it and did not ever try it. I may grab JACHero latest build and mod it the same way (if bluetooth does work in that build) if anyone really wants it. Personally, I never needed it.
As for the LED, as with most Hero builds currently out, the LED does not work. If someone can point to one that does, let me know.
not feeling the "ophone" icons.
but everything else seems legit.
but really isn't fully "functional" due to the fact there is no "rosie" which makes up pretty much the entire experience of "Hero" but good job regardless!

I suppose I should say Fully Usable (once I get BT working anyway)

Well why would he say fully functional when indeed it isnt? and 2.63 is slow for you because your using swapper. Your supposed to make a linux swap partition and have a fat 32/ext2/3 and linux swap. 2.63 is the fastest and most reliable rom that has been made so far And well this is the rom i will stay with. I dont need bluetooth because well i dont use it kinda want LED's Though But besides that.

No,
and I can't say I've notice that on other builds I've tried. Is there somewhere you've see that? It may be part of the new MMS app (which many people are having reliability issues / not getting messages)

I have updated my original post that BT is not working. As for speed of JACHero 2.63, I'll give it a whirl now that I can easily get back to this ROM.
But I've heard "Really Fast" about a lot of ROMS running Rosie/SensUI, and have not yet been convinced by any of those claims.

I don't know why everyone keeps asking for videos because unless there is a huge graphical difference (ie themes or change in the likescreen, statusbar, rosie, etc) then it's going to be the same as any other Hero rom out there.
In regards to speed and stability, that's mostly up to you the user. You configure the user.conf to your liking and use whatever apps you want. The more apps you have installed and more widgets you have on your screen the slower and more unstable your phone is. Also the speed of your sdcard could have a factor in it as well. Other factors could be included as well but the bottom line is that most Hero roms are identical to eachother and pretty much work the same way. Any obvious differences that are easily noticed visually is mostly themed.
I say backup what you have with nandroid/bart/switchrom/whatever and try it. Coming from JacHeroSki2.2, I'm noticing that this hasn't given me a single reboot and seems much more stable. But it's pointless to make a video of it because it looks the same. But... if someone would like to indulge us in a video of an MLIGN rom (which will be obsolete after every update by the way) than go for it! It's just my opinion that it's a waste of time.

The reason why i do videos is to show the improvements from the previous ROM.. Other people can then compare then if one of my ROMs suck and its BC of APK editing then i know to not use them.. I'm just trying to show them what is in store for them when i release it.

I hope not. Ive seen nothing good come of the ram hack on G1's. The phone is only meant to use a set amount of ram, and all it does it become extremely unstable when added. My experience with the ram hack i get nothing but reoots from phone going to sleep and even just sitting the home button.

On the next and upcoming versions, could you change the gmail icon? It would be easier for those of us who use two email addresses. In my case, I like to glance at the notification bar to see if I have gmail email aka my business email, but now I can't tell because the HTC mail and gmail notification icons are the same. Thanks bud.
P.S Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was you who posted the twitpic with the purple/jester rosie, right?

[THINK TANK] Multi Touch In Android 2.0

Android 2.0 supports multi touch; however, in the android roms for the mytouch and g1, multi touch is not supported. Can we get real multi touch zooming in the browser and other apps in android 2.0?
Multi Touch In Android 2.0
I will be glad if it have good multi touch soft-keyboard, nothing else no matter for me. by the way, sorry for reply
My G1 supports multitouch, but only thing that uses it is the browser. I don't see what's so amazing about it, I prefer to use the zoom buttons most of the time anyway.
a multi-touch keyboard? forgive my ignorance but what would be the point in that?

It increases typing speed. But multi touch is more important for the browser. That is why we should focus on getting multi touch to work in the browser in android 2.0.
the only problem is that the currently used kernels (mostly cyan's 1.6 kernel) aren't suitable for multitouch in 2.0 as some modules or other code seems to be missing. the current aosp kernel supports multitouch in 2.0 though

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't HTC_IME.apk a multitouch keyboard? It might just be me, but I can type ten times better on it.
It isn't a matter of multitouch being in the rom. I believe multitouch in 2.0 is enabled. The issue is support in the apps themselves. Just because the multitouch is available doesnt mean that all the applications will magically have support.
You would have to code multitouch gesture support into every individual app. Which would be a ton of work and most likely illegal. There are a few multitouch supported apps out there. If you want multitouch in your browser it should just be a matter of porting Loccys better browser to the rom.
Do you mean for instance on kingklick beta feta
or hero eclair 3.1 the browser dont support multi touch? And you want to know why?? If so the drivers aren't available yet but rumor is they should be available bfore christmas 09!
From my tests, multi touch is not enabled in any of the 2.1 hero roms or the aosp 2.0 roms.
One way to test it is by using PicSay. If you use PicSay using the Droid phone it supports multi touch when resizing images. If you install that same app on a G1 running any of the 2.1 hero roms or the aosp 2.0 roms ... it doesn't work.
It seems that there is something missing.

Yes the HTC_IME.apk is multi touch and HELL yes it's sooooooo much faster and more accurate then the stock IME.

It's all about speed. If you hit letters quickly on the stock IME it will drop letters if you type to quickly. With multi touch it will register each letter and not miss a beat.
As someone said it requires a kernel that supports multitouch, but it needs the other half Iof the apps supporting it also- as someone said
I think one of the first aosp roms supported it, i'm pretty sure since i was able to draw two lines at the same time in the dev tools pointer test. It's just not possible on newer roms because they use the cm kernel and it uses a different way of multitouch.

It would be possible yes, but seeing as no one is using it, it is probably very unstable
HTC_IME is NOT multitouch. The simple way to check is to press when letter, and while holding that down, press another letter. If the letters dont both register then there is no multitouch there, meaning your finger must be completely off the screen before pressing another letter. That is why multitouch is faster.

guys, try dolphin browser... supposed to have multitouch...
Just an FYI, there is a similar discussion going on over here.
So why dose multi touch work on the better browser but not dolphin browser?
Also a little confused, is it the kernel or the drivers that is stopping it from working?

This has got to be the most useful texting keyboard I've ever seen. It's not released yet, but do you guys think it'll be included in future ROM release like CoOkie's / Energy, etc.?
I'm not sure if it's the same process of adding swype keyboard in to the system, but swype is currently in there so it's possible and it's great, but nothing compared to what it looks like BlindType can do.
Edit Below:
The problems I can see getting in the way is that it's currently being developed only for iOS4 and Android. Wondering if it's possible for all phone types like those running Sense ROMs under WinMo6.5... Plus, it may not even be free. But this keyboard is crazy good!
Bump, my what a busy forum.
