Ok, I've been trying out a lot of Hero ROMS and I'm always disappointed in the speed, or lack thereof. Each time I have found myself flashing back to a stable Hero build and then customizing it to my liking (see below). This release is mainly for my own sanity, to save myself the time and effort of getting back to a setup I prefer.
For clarification purposes, I will be referring to these builds as PhotonMod_Hero1 and PhotonMod_Hero1.5
Just understand that v1 is based on LeakDroid's SuperHero3 build and v1.5 is based on JACHero 2.63.
**UPDATE 7/15/09**
As requested, Re-upped PhotonMod_Hero v1 without the Asian IME (pinyinIME.apk). Just be sure to choose English on the first screen of the setup wizard.

NOTE: If you have random Asian characters showing up in odd places, power off the phone and turn it back on. This seems to only happen before the first reboot.
(Reminder, this one does not use AppsToSD. It is basically SuperHeroV3-MAS minus Rosie and all HTC widgets. Also minus swap. and with a few other teaks.)

Bluetooth is NOT working in any Hero build at this time

Based on JACHero2.63 with the following changes:

-Removed ALL HTC Widgets
-Replaced HTCCamera with one that works (No sideways image)
-Replaced HtcMusic with old Music app from non-Hero builds (b/c that one is a resource hog!)
-Replaced Rosie with standard Launcher
-Removed Teeter.apk/odex, Stocks.apk/odex, DCS_Stocks.apk/odex
-Removed (commented) Swap partition section in a2sd.sh as I want to try this build out without a Swap partition.
-Added section in a2sd.sh to move a "wallpaper" folder to the FAT32 partition on your SD. That folder contains the wallpapers from the Rosie wallpaper gallery (See Below)
-Added AppsInstaller
-Added Custom Lock Screen
-Added a few "Gems" to the Ringtones/Notifications
To use AppsToSD, make sure you have your SD card setup with Fat32/Ext3 partitions. You will not need a third Linux-Swap partion with this build.
To use new Wallpapers, at the Home screen, press Menu -> Wallpaper. Then choose Albums. You should see a wallpaper folder containing 5 wallpapers.

Here you see I have changed the background to one I liked from another build. I also have installed the Retro Clock widget, Weather Channel widget, and a few apps (AndroZip, Last.fm, and I really can't remember which else). Right now I currently have about 10MB free (not running apps from SD)

Ok, I just tried Bluetooth for the first time and it does not turn on. This was my mistake. I do not use it and did not ever try it. I may grab JACHero latest build and mod it the same way (if bluetooth does work in that build) if anyone really wants it. Personally, I never needed it.
As for the LED, as with most Hero builds currently out, the LED does not work. If someone can point to one that does, let me know.

This is true, but every time I try to use Rosie I definitely do NOT have a fully functional phone.
I suppose I should say Fully Usable (once I get BT working anyway)

Is the notification sms on the icon ? i mean when you receive one sms it puts a 1 in the icon, is it ?

Well why would he say fully functional when indeed it isnt? and 2.63 is slow for you because your using swapper. Your supposed to make a linux swap partition and have a fat 32/ext2/3 and linux swap. 2.63 is the fastest and most reliable rom that has been made so far And well this is the rom i will stay with. I dont need bluetooth because well i dont use it kinda want LED's Though But besides that.

and I can't say I've notice that on other builds I've tried. Is there somewhere you've see that? It may be part of the new MMS app (which many people are having reliability issues / not getting messages)

I have updated my original post that BT is not working. As for speed of JACHero 2.63, I'll give it a whirl now that I can easily get back to this ROM.
But I've heard "Really Fast" about a lot of ROMS running Rosie/SensUI, and have not yet been convinced by any of those claims.

yea, actually being able to compile a full rom pack for fresh regular wipes complete with apps and whatnot would be killer. I'm sure there's a guide to compiling your own package somewhere though. This totally is the dev department =P Check the huge list of q&a
I'm just want people who get frustrated easily to be able to have the same benefits as the rest of us. You just tell me the rom you want, we'll chat for a little and i'll tell you what apps i can take out and you can ask me to add some apps into the rom..if you want a theme i can help you pick the best one for you and other things along those lines. I already have a few requests and I'm going to sleep now but I will try and get you guys ur roms as soon as I possibly can.
I could use (a lot of people who do embedded systems stuff could use, actually) a cupcake rom with the serial port enabled, TTYMSM2. This would allow hooking up th Dream to a number of devices (Including a sonar if you want to do the Dark Knight scanner thing ).
Ideally it should have variable baud rate but if thats not an option, a lot of stuff (DGPS, sonars...) still runs at 9600 baud.
So would it be possible to get Ion with the htc dialer and htc mail app(exchange)?

This is an update from drizzy that i modified a bit for a friend..
-for weather or flip clock use the android widget
-no mail/sms widgets
-updated onscreen keyboard just have to enable it.settings->Locale & Text-> Disable Touch Input
-Some extra games you can delete them from Settings->Applications->manage applications
-other fixes that seem to make it quicker.
-don't overclock, enjoy.

pictures store on ur sd card in DCIM/100 Media and wont go anywhere as long as you don't format ur fat32 partition..im not sure where else you would want them to be stored though.

I think he means one that embeds the current GPS data into the image.
So, when he takes a picture it will embed the data of *where* the picture was taken.
Ide like to see some of the hero widgets, like photo album, and the large calendar, and the twitter widget, work on the JACxHERO v1.3 rom

Yeah thats possible, i'll work on that when i get back from vacation..I'll take care of you. To get touchpal to work u just have to have touchpal the only one checked. Then ur set, no errors.
is it possible to customize a fast lag free rom and have it look like the hero.....i like the way the text messages and icons look also like the dialer and the menu.....but hero is so slow sometimes.....thx...

I don't know why everyone keeps asking for videos because unless there is a huge graphical difference (ie themes or change in the likescreen, statusbar, rosie, etc) then it's going to be the same as any other Hero rom out there.
In regards to speed and stability, that's mostly up to you the user. You configure the user.conf to your liking and use whatever apps you want. The more apps you have installed and more widgets you have on your screen the slower and more unstable your phone is. Also the speed of your sdcard could have a factor in it as well. Other factors could be included as well but the bottom line is that most Hero roms are identical to eachother and pretty much work the same way. Any obvious differences that are easily noticed visually is mostly themed.
I say backup what you have with nandroid/bart/switchrom/whatever and try it. Coming from JacHeroSki2.2, I'm noticing that this hasn't given me a single reboot and seems much more stable. But it's pointless to make a video of it because it looks the same. But... if someone would like to indulge us in a video of an MLIGN rom (which will be obsolete after every update by the way) than go for it! It's just my opinion that it's a waste of time.

The reason why i do videos is to show the improvements from the previous ROM.. Other people can then compare then if one of my ROMs suck and its BC of APK editing then i know to not use them.. I'm just trying to show them what is in store for them when i release it.

I hope not. Ive seen nothing good come of the ram hack on G1's. The phone is only meant to use a set amount of ram, and all it does it become extremely unstable when added. My experience with the ram hack i get nothing but reoots from phone going to sleep and even just sitting the home button.

Right on... I've noticed this as well.
Btw, can anyone post the default wallpaper (green leaves), or tell me what file the wallpapers are located in? I didn't see a Launcher.apk...
Edit: Also @MLIGN, will v2.5.7 have LED support? Not sure if you were planning on integrating the build.prop from Maxisma or not... AFAIK, there're no LEDs on v2.5.5, right?

well i think he was talking abt recording a video abt his new rom that has the 10mb ram hack in his last thread but idk if this one has it. we have to wait till he releases it n the changelog to see.......
hmmm i got a problem.. i dont get missed call notification on 2.5.5
...Never mind it works now.. it wasnt last night.
And to whoever was askin about the LED's they do work just download the missed call app.

On the next and upcoming versions, could you change the gmail icon? It would be easier for those of us who use two email addresses. In my case, I like to glance at the notification bar to see if I have gmail email aka my business email, but now I can't tell because the HTC mail and gmail notification icons are the same. Thanks bud.
P.S Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was you who posted the twitpic with the purple/jester rosie, right?

Wrong 2.5.5 has fully working LED notifications and no more heroLED.
Any1 else get fc with touch input I get it way too often and track ball is kinda weird jumps around way too much.

bluetooth and cam reported not working....
still its the BEST eclair 2.1 sense so far.. will dump everything else and start with this one...bluetooth will be fixed and cam drivers have been hacked "stolen" allthoe its still not included... i belive withind 1 week or 2 the camera drivers will be public

Pretty good rom and port. A lot of things still needs to be working before I will consider using this daily. First of all, the default messaging application is not able to find contacts when using the "to" field. You are however still able to send, you just need to use the people application. Google Sky does not work either, and I suspect a couple of others not working either.
Other than that it works pretty good. Some of the animations are VERY clunky while others are very smooth. Window prompt popups are very slow while scrolling etc. is very fast.
I look forward to trying this rom out when it's more usable. The camera drivers should also be out next week.

Hi, the rom seems to work pretty well, but definitely isn't ready for every-day use yet. Some nice new features (e.g. enhanced clock), and I really like the new lockscreen and the new homescreen makes more sense - Always bothered me how the menu launcher was so much smaller that the phone one, when there are so many ways of launching the dialer, and I use the menu much more anyway.
Shame about the bubbles, I guess...
[Edit] You don't need to worry about formatting the memory card, btw.

People search - Has a wierd bug where the letters dissapears
People - Is really slow
Sense - Will often force close if you have the big calendar
Phone - Force close on number press
Messaging - Cant choose contacts in "to:"
Email - Loops a force close when try to open
Mount USB - wont connect
Cam - no drivers yet
Bluetooth - no drivers yet
Teeter - Force close No G-sensor drivers installed
Generally performance issues with a lot of lag

It's pretty fast for me, haven't had any FCs. I might play with the kernel again and downgrade it to Cyanogen's 4.2.12.2, I like it better for some reason. But until then...
Let me know how it works for you, and definitely would like suggestions on what can be removed from the /system partition to free up more space. But like I said I havent had any FCs, or suffered from the Google sign-in loop.

I am still running on your Boogiedonut, absolutely loved it. It's my "go to" rom if I want speed. I am going to check this out as soon as you go back to CM 4.2.12 kernel though.
Works fine on my HTC Magic 32B
I just wiped my phone and flashed this ROM on my HTC Magic 32B from Vodafone NZ.
I have the stock SPL -> Hboot 1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) and radio (blah...26i).
These phones must be blessed....as they handle all ROMs and require no Danger, Death or Hard-ness.
Nice looking ROM. Everything seems to work (except the video camera - known). Sign-up worked at the start. Didn't have to skip and sign in through the market.
Even the Bluetooth works.
My (Class6 - 8GB) sdcard is partitioned 64MB linux swap, 512MB ext3, 7.5GB Fat32.
So this ROM isn't "G1 only".

thought was obvious since both Magic(32b ver) and Dream are 32B. Most if not all roms here work on my MT3G.
All or most Magic/MT3G users come here for roms since the proper section if filled with 32A that are incompat which is just messed up. Magics dont need the Haykuro SPL which came from the Magic.Dreams need it so they can fit larger roms.Not sure if you have seen Dream specs but it has 256MB Rom while Magic has 512MB.

Thanks for the comments you all. I didn't know that it still worked for mt3g, I own a G1, but if it does then that's cool. I'm running a new build now, with Cyanogen 4.2.12.2 kernel, black status bar, and its pretty nice too.
Also in this one, I'm keeping system apps on the data partition (not ext) and sym-linking them to /system/app/. So system apps still physically reside internal on data partition (/data/app-system), just sym-linked to /system/app/. This frees up about 27 MB on the /system partition (mtdblock3) and about (for me at least) still have 54 MB on /data partition. No multi-touch in browser though.
I dont include the 10 mb ram hack because I enjoy my 3d games, but I did a little research and it seems all eclair roms regardless of ram hack run slow and sluggish, is this true for you all? If that is the general case, I might as well include the 10 MB ram hack, since we wouldn't be able to enjoy or 3D games might as well benefit from the extra RAM.

Surprised you were unaware, eclair doesnt have any 3D/Open GL drivers out from AOSP atm so anything 3D related will be choppy or too ugly to look at.

Yess very quick! Usually I'm somewhat hesitant about moving quickly through the phone for fear of something force closing but I haven't had any issues zooming around on this. Not too much of a fan of the black notification bar initially I'm partial to the grey but it's growing on me.
What about swap?

I'm not sure how much I have to wait for first boot. I noticed logo froze up three or four times and then reboot itself. Is this normal or there's something wrong?

something is wrong when the logo frozes and start again, try a reboot
I found a guide that mentions basic Sense porting to another Sense device. I tried this with this Wildfire S ROM for a few reasons:
--I prefer the "standard" HTC Sense as found on any other device (ie. Black status bar, black apps, etc.)
--I wanted to see how well it'd run
--I wanted to see if there'd be any problems with anything
After following the above guide, I notice only the following bugs:
--Camera is upside down
--Rosie keeps force closing because of forced landscape orientation so I have to use an alternate launcher
--Lockscreen is always in Portrait no matter what
--Keypad backlights don't turn on
--Facebook button doesn't work (duh)
--(New)GPS doesn't work - need to mess with GPS libs when I have more time
--(New)The FM Radio app's graphics are messed up
To try and fix the Rosie problem, I tried copying over the Rosie.apk and Rosie.odex from the Chacha's 2.3.5 OTA, but no dice, the system doesn't even see it.
Anyone have any tips on how I could fix any of the above? I'm no dev, and I only tried this for (basically) the fun of it to see how it'd turn out and my "experience", so to speak, only goes as far as swapping files here and there - I felt like the Development forum was the best place to post this. Apologies if it isn't.

Well, let's start with the easy bits:
1. --Keypad backlights don't turn on
Mainly the thing is that the Wildfire S ROM does not have support (or it is not activated) for a physical keyboard; therefore the need for backlight is redundant. To fix this you will either have to manually add the code lines or un-comment them. I suggest talking with adlx or xdbg since both of them have implemented this feature in the two custom ROMs.
2. --Facebook button doesn't work (duh)
As above, the ROM doesn't know (or doesn't want to know) about the physical keyboard. Same suggestions as above.
3. Landscape/portrait issues.
Well. The main problem here is the android system. By definition it detects the longest size on the display and sets it as the height. Therefore you'll have a tough time fixing the standard display to landscape. As above, I suggest speaking with the devs that worked on these roms and implement the ChaCha kernel files into the Wildfire ROM.

For the backlight, maybe you could try using system/lib/hw/lights.msm7k.so from the stock Chacha rom, or even from SuperOSR...
You cannot copy/paste an apk+odex file, it will probably never work. Try deodexing it first, then copy it.

I copied lights.msm7k.so from SuperOSR, and the keyboard backlight works now.
I used an application on my laptop called xUltimate to deodex both this ROM and Chacha 1.54 stock, and the only things that wouldn't deodex are the Lockscreen and Rosie :/
Camera appears right-way round/up if a 3rd party camera app is used
Additional bugs I've noticed after trying it out a bit again:
--GPS doesn't work - I'll mess around with gps libs tomorrow when I have a bit more time
--The FM radio app's graphics are messed up
For gps try also to use stock chacha libsensors (or something like that)
the right names for the files are:
/system/lib/hw/gps.chacha.so
/system/lib/hw/sensors.chacha.so
try using the one from SuperOSR.
Is this ROM going to be official released anytime soon because I am working on a ROM from another HTC device aswell and was wondering if you needed any assistance on final touches?

This would interest me greatly, as I really love the "standard" sense and was quite disappointed with the amount of white/light colours used in the ChaCha's version, and how it just doesn't seem to fit in very well at all with the HTC family. Would it be possible to use the Desire Z's rosie? As that supports landscape natively.

Tbh, I haven't done anything on this for a while because I started flashing CM7/SuperOSR.
From what I can remember, the following things wern't working:
-Lockscreen - Always in Portrait, won't rotate
-Rosie - Force-close loop, had to replace with an alternate launcher
-GPS - Icon doesn't appear in the status bar
-FM/Dailer/maybe others - Graphics messed up due to forced landscape resolution
That's all I managed to check before I got caught up in crackflashing XD
I am by no means a dev - all this was done by replacing files in a Wildfire S ROM with ones from SuperOSR/stock Chacha

Precisely why I tried this in the first place - I wasn't expecting all this white, which doesn't make the Chacha feel like an HTC as much to me - I already tried the Desire Z's Rosie - while it did work, all the icons were huge (because of it being scaled for HDPI screens). Dunno about widgets.
Once I find it amongst all the crap I have on my laptop, I could upload it if anyone might have an idea how to fix what's left and to see what else is broken?
