Is apps 2 sd partioning still used? - G1 Android Development

Just wondering is the apps 2 sd method still used?
I remember I got the 8gb memory card just for this purpose, but now I'm wondering is it still used the same way? As in we have to setup the memory card in a specific way for it to work properly.
I hear things about compcache and all but i never really caught on what that really is.
Anybody got some info? Shed some light?

Yes.
Off to Q-n-A you go.

SDcard Unexpectedly removing itself!!!???

Ok im about to blow my lid.. this is the second time im experiencing this problem.
Out of no where my sdcard removes itself. Its actually happen to where my G1 freezes, I actually try to reboot and it goes back into sign in!! Wtf!! my contacts are all gone my Gtalk has to sign back in.. THIS SUCKS. I'm currently on Dude 1.3 Rc2.. I'm an loyal dude rom fan and this has never happen to me.
Its happened twice so far and since the last time it happened ive changed my sd's im using a 4gb class2. Dont tell its the class2 cause Ive been using the same class2 since ive had app 2 sd and never experienced this..
Has this ever happen to anyone or is it a known issue if someone, anyone shed some light on my problem i would greatly appreciate it!!
THanks a million!!
Do your apps remove themselves as well when you have to sign back in? Like a normal wipe? Have you tried this with more than one SD card? How long have you had the phone?
Sounds like it could be hardware related...but trying wiping and reinstalling. Also, try not using APPS2SD and see what happens...because obviously, when your SD card stops working on Apps2SD, the background processes being run off the card are going to crash and lock up the phone, and you're needing to sign in because that data was stored on the card as well.
My friend had a defunct phone where not only could the SD card wiggle a little inside its slot, but the entire slot itself came off the board/wiring it was sodered onto, so if you've dropped your phone on that edge, that could be your problem. Every once in a while, it'll connect, but it can still unconnect at any time, like what you're experiencing.
Ext2 format itself!!
I actually noticed that my sd card is formating itself to Ext2(all 4 gbs) everytime this happens!! and its hell to format it back to fat32 this is got me going NUCKIN FUTS!! Ive never dropped my phone the sd card slot is intact and ive had the phone for quiet a while..
Also i use paragon to partition..
is it a 4 gb micro sdcard?
Edit. never mind didn't fully read it. the size of your sd card is your problem. I had a 4 gb and it pissed me off soooo bad. I don't know what it is about then but the phone doesn't like them. sorry.
yes, class 2

yeah buddy you're out of luck. buy a different size sd card and you will be good to go. I almost was going to try sending my phone back to t-mobile but then I figured since it started when I changed to that size sd card and I heard that they were having so much trouble with them with this phone that I would try a different sd card first. Switched to a 8gb class 6 sd card that I bought at target and things couldn't be working better.
hope this helps.

No problem. Glad that I could help.
Sorry about the fact that you have to buy a new sd card though. Trust me I know that it sucks.

you don't have to be a **** about it. I am just trying to help. there is no need to say that what I said is "BS" I know that 4 gb sd cards have been known to have problems with these phones. I am not trying to say that is for sure his problem. I am just giving a suggestion that was given to me and it worked and his issues seem similar to mine.

sorry, I just found that rude. oh well. but if he is having a problem may not just be the sd card size, the problem may lay within the ROM as you said before. I would try talking to dude and see if it is something on his end. If it is I am sure he would be glad to know about it and fix it.
i had this problem with the 1gb microsd that came with my g1! i had a 16g sandisk class2, and it got fried, so i had to use the original 1g as a temporary...it did that all the time, i was using it for a week or two and at least once a day itd do that sh*t. I never figured it out, i just bought a Transcend 16g class 6...works great. Wish i knew the answer for you guys, though, sorry...Hope you get it figured out...

I don't have an answer, but I hope this can add more info to your puzzle.
Same happens to mine every now and then. No reformat though, just pops up an error saying that the sd card has been removed. Then my custom ringtone (which resides on the sd card) stops being used and it reverts the default.
Am running on JFv1.51 ADP and have the stock standard 1gb sd card that came with the adp.
I don't have apps installed on the card, just the cache.
big nu, I know that you say it doesn't matter if it is a class 2 or not but I would just try a class 6 sd card.

I'm sorry I never ment any disrespect in any way when i said its BS my bad.
This actually used to happen to me even before the cupcake update. I used to used a 4gb class 6 card which eventually got fried..so I'm waiting for a new 1 to come in
I know this will seem really strange, but I noticed a trend throughout all the posts....seems like the G1 doesn't like lower numbers Go with a 16 GB, class 6 card and call it good I never had a problem whatsoever with mine, even though I am currently using an 8GB, and Dude's 1.2b. Once I pick up my 16 gig, I will let (you) know how it runs.
i keep having the same problem and i am running jf 1.51 us no themes or anything

swap on system ROM?

I know people have swapfiles on their SD card... but I was wondering, would it be possible to have a swapfile/partition on the device's ROM? Wouldn't that make more sense? You wouldn't have to worry about issues with mounting the SD card, and it would be a faster transfer then with the SD card. If this can work, what would be the best way about creating a swapfile on the ROM?
Short answer: Can be done, but a bad idea.
Long answer: No one is clear whether the internal NAND has wear-leveling, and even if it does, that is a *lot* of wear-and-tear to put on the internal NAND that can't be replaced if it wears out. The slight performance improvement might come at the cost of prematurely killing you phone.
Discussed here or Cyanogen's forums a couple/few weeks ago. I think the latter.
That answers that I guess...lol. Haven't been able to put one on the SD card yet anyways, so something more would be out of the question. lol

How to move programs to SD card not internal Memory?

Dumped my buggy not impressive Galaxy s 4g today> (love Costcos 3 months policy) and picked up G2x. So far extremally impressed!
One question is the Costco phone guy handed my the 16gig micro SD card from the Galaxy as he said he had extras from dead phones. I said THANK YOU! and installed. However when using AppstoSd program it only see's internal mem, and Internal SD 5gs. It does not see or give option to move to my 16g Sd card?
My HD2 and Samsung worked great with AppstoSD. Am I missing something? I mean I guess the 1.2gig and 5gigs of internal is enough. But I like to also use the SD card for programs to not overload internal memory.
I have not rooted yet, will do that so I can get my Titanium backup working to see it I can do it with that.
Thanks!

Been all over that thread. This issue and the "phantom AT&T bands are two big issues on this device. However, there may be some hope at the CM end - not this item in the latest CM7 changelog"

First thank you for responding. I am not a newbie but have been rooting and testing my Hd2's for past year. My first non HTC phone in awhile was the vibrant s4g, it had its own problems with very low internal memory.
So I was excited this phone had 8 gigs plus now my 16 gig card. I have not been on these forums so I did not know it was a known issue Sorry.
So to clarify, there is no workaroud? But can I not just use root explorer and move files to the SD card? I understand apps to sd wont do it automaticly. But I plan to put my music and movies at least on SD... What would even be the use of the manufacturer putting SD slot on phone if you could not use it?
Ira that is what I do. SD card = sdcard/external_SD
Or something to that effect. I plan to keep my apps2sd on internal and SD for straight storage and backups.
From the sound of it, the clockwork mod can access the microsd so at least backups will be off the device.

What I have been doing is the basic copy and paste. I copy the app or video ect. from the sd card and paste it on the ext/sd card. If there is a faster oor easier way please let me know. I am rooted and this is the first phone I ever had with this kind of a set up with the sd card. I prefer the other way much better ala Nexus One.

That is correct. In a file manager etc. you can locate your SD Card by going to the ExternalSD folder (path: SD Card/ExternalSD). The "SD Card" is actually the internal memory, and the "External SD" is the actual SD Card. When you plug your phone into a PC two different drives come up, one for the internal and one for the SD Card. From what I know you can't put apps on your actual SD Card. However music, pics, etc. all work just fine. I have all my music on my SD Card and everything else on the internal.
P.S. When opening the internal memory in a PC it will still have an ExternalSD folder, but it will be empty. I would advise not deleting it.
There's something like 1.5GB just for apps. What the heck are you doing to "overload" it??

GPS maps will easily overload the internal SD card. If they let the map location be set, that would fix it, but most do not (yet).

[Q] "Blank SD card or unsupported file system"???

Hey guys, as the title says my nexus one is telling me something worse than I have just about ever seen on my phone.... I have a 16GB SD card in my phone and I have about 10 gigs worth of photos and so on of my 1yo son that I unfortunately haven't backed up or anything and I can't bare to lose them as they are the only ones I have (Don't tell me,I know I shouldn't of kept them on a SD card in an everyday phone that gets extremely heavy usage. I KNOW!). Has anybody had the same problem as I have? Just to let you know I have 2 ext partitions on the card along with the FAT partition. These consist of a 1gig ext3 partition and a 512mb ext3 partition. So I don't know if that's the reason for the crash. Guys it might seem like a petty problem to you guys that have PC's (mine ended up getting thrown out of a window... Don't ask) to format them and use recovery programs but I just need to know if there is something I can do.
Cheers.

What's the point of my SD Card? (ExtSD)

So, I got a 32gb Class 10 card for my phone assuming that as with my old phone I'd use it for apps as well as some music and things. But with this phone Samsung gave it an "internal" SD Card which gets used for all the things my external card did on my Dinc. And there seems to be no way to change this.
So aside from Videos and Mps3 and some pics, is there really any use for the SD card on this phone?
FYI - not rooted or anything as of yet. I was rooted & running custom roms on my Dinc, but haven't seen much of a need on this phone.

Aside from being able to back up all your stuff and store ALL the media you could want, no..
Supposedly there is a way to force apps onto extsd but I don't know much about it.
Thanks!
Thank you!

I recently upgraded from a "tricked out, custom ROM" Dinc as well. I didn't root the SIII for the first couple weeks, but them little things, like the sdcard vs extsdcard for apps, no google wallet, no titanium backup, etc got the best of me and I rooted. You can certainly ulock the potential of your extsdcard by rooting.
Is there a guide available for forcing apps onto extSD?
Sent from Galaxy S III on Verizon (Unlocked Bootloader)
Set Titanium Backup to backup to ext-sd. Make your NANDROIDs save to sd-ext as well. If your phone is ever damaged (fall in water, fall on ground, etc) then at least you still are able to salvage the sdcard with your precious information.

32 gigs in the device native, 64 in the slot. 96 gigs of space ( - a bit ) I can't think of any reasons why almost 100 gigs of interactively accessable storage is bad.
What sucks is Instagram won't save to external, I've even contacted them about it and they still haven't done anything about it.
= sent from my Unlocked VZW S3 =
I put everything on my SD card, (64gb), and really only use internal (16gb) for apps and stuff. So that its always backed up on a removable card
