Firewalls for WM6? - General Questions and Answers

Hi
There are some firewall available. I already only only tried Airscanner Firewall and I didn't see the feature I need in it. I would like to been able to block the specific network adapter. GPRS/EDGE transfer is very expensive in my country and would like to block all traffic on "cellular line" network adapter and leave wlan network adapter untouched to use only it. Are there any good firewalls for WM? I find a solution to for my problem to set not using GPRS totally but rarely I would like to browse some page via GPRS so firewall with that option will be faster then unlocking GPRS in settings.
WM6.5 and HTC Touch2
Cheers

For this you do not need a firewall , tap start>>settings>>connections>>connections, and then tap the 'advanced' tab,, after that tap the 'select network' button, and then you know what to do.
Cheers
Edit:If you still want to use cellular connection occasionally, you can appoint a specific browser, set it to use the phone connection. For example, you can install opera mobile 9.7 & 10 two versions, they can coexist on the phone. while 9.7use wifi & 10version uses gsm/3g network.

Just install MoDaCo NoData and you can disable all connections using GPRS

Wifi before gprs for email +web

Hi all - i have my xda mini s setup to connect to the internet and collect my exchange emails all works fine.
i use it at work + at home a lot and both locations have a wifi broadband network.
i would like my xda mini s to only connect to GPRS for web browsing and emails when a stored wifi network is not in range (eg when im on the road)
Is it possible to enter in this preference anywhere? thanks in advance for any help
Actually, as far as PIE or any program that connects to the internet is concerned WiFi takes precedence over GPRS by default.
The problem is MS push mail. It forces GPRS even if WiFi is connected. If you try to serf to a graphics heavy site wile connected to both GPRS and WiFi you will see the speed difference.
I am not sure what the logic behind this MS stupidity is, and unfortunately I don't know of any cure except deleting the GPRS settings.
hi - and thanks.
damn.
well i did have a qucik test i went on the web and it seemed to be connecting to gprs (while i was already connected to a wifi network)
i will have a play.
There's one other thing I forgo to mention:
When connection to WiFi make sure you select the correct value under "This network connects to".
I assume your GPRS settings are under My ISP and that is what's selected in Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network selection.
You should then select "The internet" for the WiFi network.

Problem with DNS?!

Hi there, I'm having problem connecting to the internet using WIFI on my Tornado smartphone (SP5m)... it always connects but takes a while to locate the url, it says "Locating..." in Internet Explorer for a long time and then finally open up the url. To me, it looks like a DNS issue?!
And that's using my own WIFI router at home with a DSL line (5 Mbits), no firewall on it, etc.
But whenever I'm connected to any other WIFI access point (e.g. coffee shops, etc), web pages and other internet stuff would load and open as quick as any WIFI laptop, any thoughts??
Thank you all for your time,
highmighty
I'm having similar problem on my home wifi with 128bit WEP shared key - but i never get over loading...
But I discovered that if I run Skype on the phone, it can connect and since then internet works OK (even mail through POP etc...). I have no idea how to fix it :/, it works excelently with a free wifi networks...
Yep, could it be because my personal wifi connection uses wpa encryption as oppose to no encryption at all (like in coffee shops or elsewhere)?
Try assigning IP manually.
Where would I change that? I'm running WM6 on a SP5m and I don't see where I would modify the way IP address are assigned, either auto or manual?
Thank you for your time
To threadstarter, check your router settings, are you using WEP or WPA which you did not configure on your phone.
Then check to see if you have any MAC filtering included, also ensure DHCP is enabled on your router.
Last resort, if you are using Andot's Perfect English Edition v6, there should be a WLAN IP manager in it under Accesories
You know what? I installed Opera Mini and without changing any wifi settings (router & phone), it now works ultra fast, it locates the proper URL as quick as anywhere else... Internet Explorer for mobile seems to be the problem here?!
Here you go: http://www.modaco.com/WLAN-IP-Manager-t251147.html
You can change IP, gates, DNS and so on.
IE for mobile is slow...
How come IE for mobile is taking forever to "locate" the URL while Opera Mini locates it super fast? Does IE for mobile uses a proxy to render those pages? If so, can I disable that? What other tests could I ran to isolate the issue?
I'd like to find a permanent fix because I'd like to use IE for mobile, which works fine with youtube videos... thanks to you all!

Can't get Bluetooth PAN WM to WM to work

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to get on the internet with my Axim x51v.
And I'm using my Touch Cruise as BT PAN access point (using the Internet sharing option).
I've installer the widcomm bluetooth stack on my x51v, because the Microsoft stack cannot connect to a PAN.
Settings up the PAN connection works perfectly, the x51v even got his IP from the Cruise his DHCP.
But... when I'm trying to browse to a website, it goes wrong
Internet Explorer on the x51v gives the message: "The page cannot be found. Check the name and try again."
I also installed a network sniffer on the Cruise to check which data is send.
This sniffer views the DHCP request, no problem there.
But when I request a website, there are some ARP requests and responses.
AND... there are to packet who look like DNS requests to me, but there source address is the x51v's MAC address and th destination is the Cruise, and there's never a response.
So... I tried to connect to a website by IP instead of hostname, to check if this is a DNS problem, but without any luck
But there is a difference, the sniffer now only shows the ARP requests and responses and Internet Explorer gives a different message: "The page cannot be displayed or donwloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Sorry for the long story... I hope someone can help me with this problem
Or point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance
did you try working with something other than the x51v?
btw, if you want to save yourself the headache, purchase WMWifiRouter..
I also tested this with my PC and Cruise and it worked perfectly. I was able to access the internet through the Cruise.
Forgot to mention that I did try WMWifiRouter, but got the same problem.
edit:
Maybe its usefull to know that the x51v is running WM6.1 (from Football) and the Cruise is running the official WM6.1 ROM from HTC.
Maybe someone knows another way to access the internet on the x51v through the Cruise.
I did also try the Wifi to 3G option from WMWifiRouter. At first the connection was to unstable to browse, but this problem seems to be solved by holding the Cruise further away from the x51v . But with a distance of almost 3 meters the connection still isn't stable enough, it reconnect about every minute.
And I think a distance of 3 meters between the two devices is to much.
Would it be possible to share the Cruise his internet connection over USB?
My idea is to do this using this CF USB card for the x51v.
if the polaris can read your device as a regular syncing device (like a pc or so) there's no reason why WMWifirouter won't pass your Polaris' 3G or Wifi connection to USB connection on your x51v.
I found another solution!
I (re)enabled DUN on the Cruise (throught the registry) and let the x51v dail in on the Cruise.
At first it wouldn't work, but after some messing with some settings it finally worked!
Thanks for your replies Nir36.
ahh. congrats. and a good idea it is.
if you don't mind, write the exact steps of what you did so i can put it in the GUIDES thread in the Q&A section.
Ok, here's what I did.
First to Enable DUN, which was removed since the introduction of internet sharing. (On the Cruise)
Import this keys into your registry

Guide!! Using your WM6.1 device as access point via your router

Hello This guide is made up from the knowledge i have build up from advice given on XDA and information on other sites.
I have found this very useful in my home and hope you do to.
First off, this guide explains everything you need to do to use your diamond as the access point to the internet at home for all devices. (PC's, PS3, XBOX360, Wii)
It is highly recommended that you have a unlimited data allowance!!!!! Otherwise you could have a hefty bill at the end of the month.
Right what you will need :
A WM6.1 Device (I used a Diamond) with an unlimited data allowance tariff,
A WiFi router (i have used an old router that was installed with Tiscali BB)
WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (please find this your self i will not provide it)
and some basic knowledge of networking on PC's and your devices.
Thats it. Please don't be put off by the networking side of things its really easy to do.
Right first off we need to get your diamond taking to your router.
switch on your router and let it do its thing for 2-4 mins
Connect your diamond to the wifi router by switching on your wifi in settings, communications on touchflow, when prompted, connect to your router and enter your network key.
THIS IS THE SAME PROCESS AS CONNECTING TO A WIFI HOTSPOT.
Its that simple.
Next switch off your wifi in settings, communications.
Install WMWifiRouter version 0.80 (Simple and stable)
once installed open WMWifiRouter and press connect.
This should then setup your phone to be used as a access point and connect to your wireless network all at once.
Once it says connected you can turn off your phones main screen by pressing the off switch at the top and put your phone where there is best signal! HSDPA is needed to get up 7.2mbps (little H in signal area)
Right now you need to setup your laptop or device to talk to the phone via your router!
So here are the settings you need to setup in either TCP/IP (manual connection) or a manual connection on your device (PS3, Wii, XBOX360).
I will use a laptops connection as a example because all you need to do is to copy the settings to another device using a different IP address.
If you use wifi or a hardwired connection, right click the telly with the wifi connection in the bottom right of the screen and click open network connections (XP only dont know for vista), Or if the telly is not displayed in the bottom righthand cornner of the task bar then click start, control panel, network connections.
Click on the connection you wish to use i.e local area connection or wireless network connection (you can setup both connections by repeating these steps on each connection)
this should bring up a general tab of this connection, click properties.
This will bring up another box with the network properties, all you need to do is manually enter your IP settings and DNS settings so double click on "internet protocol [TCP/IP]"
Another box appears.
Click "use the following IP address"
In IP address type "192.168.0.xxx" xxx being the unique 3 digit code of your choice, write this down for your firewall settings on other devices if you run a networked drive etc. Each new device will need its own unique 3 digit code ie PC = 192.168.0.100, XBOX360 = 192.168.0.200, Wii = 192.168.0.123 etc.
In Subnet mask type "255.255.255.0"
In Default gate way type "192.168.0.1
Now click "Use the following DNS server address"
In preferred DNS server type "192.168.0.1"
Thats it, press ok and ok on any other boxes still left open.
Your network device will rest your IP and DNS settings to the ones you have just entered, thus allowing you computer to access the mobiles phones internet connection via your router
On all your devices Manually setup all your connections using these settings and they will all use your mobile phone to connect to the internet.
Using DHCP to configure your network is not advised as its unreliable at finding your phones connection.
Now if you want to start using your phone as a phone again, open up WMWifiRouter again if its not already and click options Quit.
To get internet access on other devices via your phone again all you need to do is to start WMWifiRouter and press connect. Start using the internet!!!
If you wish to use your laptop on another hotspot, you will need to reset the TCP/IP settings back to automatic, otherwise it will not work.
Using this process sometimes causes the phone to disable its own internet connection, so a soft reset after exiting WMWifiRouter is recommended.
Have fun, im sorry if its all a little messy but i have never been very good at writing these guides.
If any modd wants to add or edit this post then please feel free. any persons wanting to add to this guide please do so.
Yes i know you can connect your phone to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, but this method allows multiple devices to use the same phone to access the internet at the same time and via a access point at the highest possible speed, so games consoles can use it!!! Brilliant if you get a good HSDPA signal and live in the country.
Oh one last thing! if you are a youngster and wish to try this, please do so on other equipment, don't use your family's main router and laptop or PC unless its no longer in use!!!
Thank You

If you connect your device via usb activesync than it will automatically use the computer's internet connection. (I think this is the default windows mobile behavior).

For a wireless network do the following....
Make sure that your router is not set to hide your network (Broadcast Network option should be on).
If you have used mac protection (an option on your router) then you will need to first get the mac address of your Topaz and put into into your router security.
On your Topaz do the following:
1) Go to the communications option under the setting page.
2) Turn WiFi on.
3) Press on the Wi-Fi option and it will show a screen of networks it finds and the signal strength
4) Press on your network
5) If your network is passcode or wep enabled then you will be prompted to enter the key
6) Save the connection (move to first preference if possible so it is faster to connect)
You can now select to hide your network on your router if you want to
If you set the network to autoconnect then when you turn on your WiFi in the future the network will connect automatically if in range
