hi, first post here.
i have an HTC Touch Cruise with the default factory rom and it has an internal wifi antenna... I'm trying to setup a wireless network with my neighbour but my PC doesn't have a wifi adapter (and i don't have the money for one right now), so i was wondering if it is possible to make the pda some sort of adapter for the pc to use via usb/bluetooth?
One of the first thing we'll do if it's possible is to crack the wep key cause he can't rembemer the password and a hard reset to the router doesn't erase it
can also anyone suggest some tools to do that job?
I was thinking of running these tools on the pc since the pda will only serve as some kind of NIC...
hope someone can help...
Edit: Forgot to mention that i also have a bluetooh adapter on the pc if that comes of any use

There's an internet sharing option in Windows Mobile 6. Connect to the wifi network using the cruise and configure the internet sharing options. Then connect the cruise to the PC via USB and the PC should be able to access the net via the cruise's wifi connection.

i've been snoping around that part, but it asks me for a conection name in which is on <none> cause i don't have a connection configured... if i go to the connections part, i don't know what kind of connection to create as it asks me to create a VPN or an ISP connection...
how can i configure internet sharing propperly?

2. Ask your neigbour to use Cain on his pc... it can reveal what's written in the password boxes (if it's XP or older), reveal it in the WiFi connection settings on the pc... Whith this you won't need any WEP cracking... also he should be able to change the WEP key without the original... if he doesn't know the access code to the router that's THE problem, check the manual for default values, and try those first before attempting anything else...
3. For configuring a 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE connection you'll need a data plan from you mobile carrier... after that you can configure the connection on your PDA.

From what i've read on this forums, WmWifiRouter is for routing my 3G/HSDPA/GPRS/EDGE to other phones via wifi, but correct me if i'm wrong lol.
what i want to do is basiclly have wifi on the pc using the pda's built in antenna...

The ICS only shares your mobile internet with one computer be it on USB or BT, it can't act as a wifi adapter... The WMWifiRouter uses the ICS, but with different settings, that can't be utilized manualy... you can create an Ad-Hoc network with some registry tuning, but that's about it.. no DHCP, no NAT, no WEP, nothing that makes it easy, and secure...
Also I mentioned a version number for WmWifiRouter... the leatest (1.20) supports the Wifi -> USB mode, so with this your PDA can act as a WiFi adapter.
Also these PDAs weren't ment to be used this way, so expect high-level battery drainage, you'll need atleast 2 USB ports to charge it while using WMWiFiRouter.
But you can download the trial from the site, and see for your self... you won't loose anything with trying...

Ok, i got the 1.20 trial on the pda and got it working in Wifi -> usb mode, but now how do i search wireless networks on the pc? i noticed it is detected as wired connection, not a wireless one...

The PC sees a wired connection... so? You thought that, you can use the windows Wireless Zero Config for searching? I guess you just found out that you can't...
The wireless connection is managed by your PDA, connect to a wireless network with you PDA after you set up the WiFi -> USB...
gnick is correct, I am actually using my phone at home as a Wifi Adapter with WMWifiRouter 1.25 and it works very well. And YES, you have to connect your Wifi on phone first, then connect phone to computer via USB and (in my case) Windows 7 does the rest... I believe Vista also. Not sure about XP, don't have an XP machine, well I do, but it's off sitting in the closet (in timeout for not behaving good.. hehe)

I'm online using the "internet sharing" connection now (in Florida cleaning up after a flood) (Yes, I need to get back to work . . . .).
I also have a Fuze and am using EnergyROM 2.0. Haven't changed any settings since installing the new ROM. Works like a charm for me.
Make sure the proxy box under the MediaNet settings is NOT checked.

Open up taskmanager and make sure that activesync is not running on the phone. this will not allow internet sharing to work. what does the phone say when you open internet sharing and click connect?
download a registry editor (i use total commander, and it works just fine).
open it up, go to \plugins\registry\HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings\ForceCellConnection and simply delete the contents of the value so that it's empty. Go ahead and do a soft reset and open up the internet sharing app. From there, select the Media Net connection and hit connect. Voila, good to go!

I keep activesync enabled so that i'm able to receive corporate email when on the road.
I was able to tether via USB (was doing nothing different from last night when i was unable to internet share via USB, however I noticed when shutting down that BT stack crashed); internet sharing app came up automatically once I selected internet sharing right after hooking up the cable to my laptop, and MediaNet was there by default (I guess it's all cooked into the ROM; did not have to delete any registry keys; kudos to NRGZ)... was able to get close to 1Mb/s download speed (upload is really slow however, less than 50Kb/s) - not too bad overall
Still have problem connecting via Bluetooth
maybe i'm having problem pairing laptop and Fuze? is there a pre-defined code/pass key that i'm supposed to use for the Fuze?
i was just using my security/lock code.. when laptop starts dialing (is dial up number *99# correct?), i get the following error box:

now, i just tried leaving User Name and Password fields blank on the Bluetooth connection wizard, and using dial-up number *99***1#, like they suggest here: Answer Center - Create a Windows XP Dial-Up Networking Connection for a Bluetooth Device , and got a new error:

smitty, do you tether via bluetooth or usb? i have no problem with usb now but still get the same "error 678: the remote computer did not respond..." i wonder if my BT driver is corrupt or i'm blacklisted by at&t
if anyone is able to connect using bluetooth and Internet Sharing app on Energy or any other similar ROM, can you share your dial-up settings with me?
after i start Internet Sharing app, with PC Connection = Bluetooth PAN and Network Connection = MEdia Net, and then right click my Bluetooth Modem in Dial-up Network Places on my laptop, the icon shows "connecting" for about 5 seconds (and the data icon H on the phone starts rotating) and then the error comes up on computer screen.. i can't believe no one else has had the same issue, i must be something with my laptop

I haven't been able to get my HP laptop to pair via bluetooth with my Fuze yet so I was doing USB. With regards to your issue, do you ahve one or two pull down menus in INternet Sharing app? If you have 1, then your registry needs to be hacked. AT&T used a registry key to force Internet Sharing app to only use the isp.cingluar access point (instead of wap.cingluar). If you pay the extra bucks for the full unlimited with tehtering then your account is setup to use isp.cingluar as well as wap.cingluar. If you just have the normal unlimited w/o tehtering option (which is not unlimited it caps at 5GB/month) then you only can use wap.cingluar. THis is how AT&T is going more easily find people using the cheaper plan with thethering and of course charge them up the butt for violation of the TOS (that they keep changing). Removing the registry key, fixes the issue.

sounds like we are in the same boat here - i can tether my HP laptop with Fuze via USB no problem now using Internet Sharing app, but no luck with Bluetooth whatsoever... i don't think there is an issue with the registry ever since i switched to Energy 2.0 ROM which must have the settings customized (so yes, I do have 2 pull down menus, and I have Media Net selected in the second one). So, I tried to use both wap.cingular and isp.cingular APN's (both [email protected] and [email protected] for User Name, CINGULAR1 for password; then I tried leaving User Name and Password fields blank...) with no success... nothing works, damn it!!!
looks like it gets paired up briefly, then starts dialing and gets the error in a couple of seconds.. the problem must be with the bluetooth dial-up settings for AT&T, because: 1) i have no problem tethering via USB; 2) Fuze is being paired up with my laptop and trying to use HSPDA data connection (as indicated by rotating H on the phone for a few seconds while my laptop tries to dial up).
by the way, have you tried dialing *99# or *99***1# (i tried both numbers as well as *99***3# for Samsung phones) from your Fuze, did you get any modem dial tone??

I was able to connect to internet through bluetooth by using the following settings.
After pairing the bluetooth on both Fuze and laptop:
On my Fuze: open 'Internet Sharing' then select Bluetooth PAN and choose the appropriate network connection (in my case TZones) then tap 'Connect'
On the laptop: open bluetooth neighborhood then 'discover service' or 'explore' on the Fuze device. You should see 'Network Access Point on [Fuze]' and then double click on it.
Done.

I've been using ICS with no problems with a ThinkPad T43 for a few weeks at work to circumvent the proxies and reach out to my home machine via RDP. The RDP app for the Fuze just doesn't cut it with its whopping 640x480 screen. Turns out that AT&T in NY/NJ is somehow monitoring the connections. I was watching a bunch of videos to pass some downtime, and I guess I triggered some kind of alert on their end. ICS will connect to MediaNET with no problems (settings read wap.cingular), ICS status shows connected (I am connecting over USB) and my ThinkPad network connection shows a private IP address handed to it by the phone (192.168.0.x range). However when I am trying to connect to something, I'll get timeout errors. Running a simple ping comes back with no DNS capabilities as I can't even ping google.com... Has this happened to anyone on the forum? Can anyone offer some advice? I am thinking of just calling AT&T and playing dumb, saying that I was watching videos, as well as moving lots of music from my home computer via FTP ... Any advice appreciated. I pay for the $40/month PDA plan... I don't see the point of paying for tethering when you're already paying for data. Yes, before people start flaming me, I was stupid by using the connection to watch a bunch of videos, but you're able to watch youtube on your phone anyway....

So I downloaded ICS Control v0.21, which by the way is an awesome program. I went through the config, was able to connect my laptop to my HTC Fuze via WiFi. That was easy. As palringo (win xp version) was connecting in the background, I was able to do a test google search and get back results. Ran a continuous ping on google (ping google.com -t). Turns out that after about 25 ping replies or so, just about the time it took me to do a few web searches, the requests start timing out. Directing the ping at another website shows that the ping request couldn't find the host... basically the same problem I had tethering over USB. It's as if the AT&T network is determining that the request is coming from a PC and not the PDA and not passing the DNS requests... Either way, I tried to ping google via 74.125.45.100 and got back a request timed out. I am now wondering whether or not this may have to do with the packet MTU and whether or not the PDA packets differ from regular PC/WinXP packets. I just don't know enough about networking to be able to know. I am able to ping the Fuze gateway (for all-intensive purposes set to 192.168.2.1) and get back replies within 2-4ms. I really would love to hear from someone to whom this has happened before. I haven't called AT&T yet as the data connection on the phone itself works just fine, and I am able to load pages on the phone just fine. It's just any form of ICS that's beat...
Come on XDA-Dev, I know the collective intelligence can come up with something here.
I didn't think ATT could detect the difference between tethered requests and ones that originate on the phone, that would be bad though, if that were the case. Since the previous poster was watching videos, it seems to me the bandwidth would be the comparable to watching videos with the YouTube app on the Fuze, which I'm sure is within the terms of service contract.
My experience is closer to vovan75's. ICS works fine via USB, but does not work via Bluetooth. The strange thing is with the BT connection, I can ping the gateway, and even do nslookup with the default DNS, and sometimes if I get lucky, the connection works for a few seconds, allowing a page to load, totally random.
I thought everything worked using the original ATT rom, so I have a feeling culprit is something in the NRG rom, or maybe a radio incompatibility. I might re-flash to the old official rom just to try this, before the next time I update to the latest NRG build.

Radio: 1.14.25.35 (from official HTC 6.1 update)
Notebook with Windows 7 RTM
Windows calls this "Bluetooth Network Connection" (I don't see a reference to DUN, at least not in Win7)

Windows 7 calls this "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device"
DSLReport speed test (Flash) - down: 696Kbs, up: 336Kbs (varies quite a bit, much better at night of course)
Okay, figured it out. The DHCP setting for the bluetooth PAN should be off (I know, counter-intuitive). I found this by diff'ing the entire HKLM-Comm registry branch of the last EnergyROM build (Sept 6) vs the official ATT 6.1 rom (5.11.502.2WWE), which did work after all.

BTW, you don't need to setup Dial-Up Networking when using the Internet Sharing application (IntShrUI.exe). DUN needs to be configured on the PC when using the phone's modem bluetooth service, and AFAIK, needs to be provisioned by AT&T before it will work. The Internet Sharing app acts like an uplink for paired devices in the bluetooth personal area network (PAN).

If you connect your device via usb activesync than it will automatically use the computer's internet connection. (I think this is the default windows mobile behavior).

For a wireless network do the following....
Make sure that your router is not set to hide your network (Broadcast Network option should be on).
If you have used mac protection (an option on your router) then you will need to first get the mac address of your Topaz and put into into your router security.
On your Topaz do the following:
1) Go to the communications option under the setting page.
2) Turn WiFi on.
3) Press on the Wi-Fi option and it will show a screen of networks it finds and the signal strength
4) Press on your network
5) If your network is passcode or wep enabled then you will be prompted to enter the key
6) Save the connection (move to first preference if possible so it is faster to connect)
You can now select to hide your network on your router if you want to
If you set the network to autoconnect then when you turn on your WiFi in the future the network will connect automatically if in range
I know there are a lot of threads about wifi problems on this site, but i cant seem to find one that has helped me.
My problem is that i am trying to connect to my orange broadband router through the wifi on the Zest. It requires a WEP key which i have, and have entered. Although my desktop PC connects to the router with the network key but uses it as a WPA-PSK key with TKIP encryption. I have also tried to connect my Zest using WPA-PSK but have been unsuccessful. It accepts the key (both as WEP and WPA-PSK) and says that the source is 'Available', but it will not actually connect to the internet. I have tried connecting to another hotspot next to my library (which does not require a key) and have been successful, it becomes available and then connects and i am able to use web browsers via wifi, as usually when i open the browser at home it automatically connects to GPRS/3G, which then costs me extra on my contract.
Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

This can also happen when the user selects (usually inadvertantly) the "WORK" option under "connects me to . . ." section in the wifi setup. When this is selected and all the other settings are set to "my device connects me to . . . 'INTERNET'", then one could have the encryption password correct and have their entire network set up correctly, but the device will STILL fail to connect. Thus, the "connection to" in the wifi network setup and the network adapter, and one's router must all "agree" or connection will not take place.
Hello everyone! Here's a nice little guide on how to tether your phone and use that ability to power a home internet network. I have done tons of trial and error to get this working with bits and pieces from numerous forums and google research. This has been working flawlessly for me and it's a "set it and forget it solution".
The reason why I wanted to do this is because I live in a rural area with no high speed ISP. My only option was to use a data capped satellite ISP that is extremely limited in ability and expensive. Without further ado my guide to achieve an unlimited, data cap free, tethered home network.
What you need:
Android phone you're willing to dedicate for full time use
Computer with windows and LAN port you're willing to dedicate for full time use
Wireless Router
A nice USB cord for your phone
A nice CAT cable
1) First thing to do is look around for an unlimited data (4glte preferred, no tethering plan needed) cellular plan. I know there are a few out there but I decided on MetroPCS due to the coverage I get and the price ($60 a month, no contract). I opted for just a sim card as I had an android phone laying around.
2) Make sure your android is unlocked if it's not on the same network you are trying to use. My phone was tied to AT&T and I had to call them to unlock it. Most carrier will do this if the phone in good standing. Meaning paid off. Or root it.
3) We will need to find out where your equipment will sit to receive the best speeds. I recommend putting your phone in "field test mode" and walk around the house. The lower number the better. I also ran a speed test in certain locations to give me a rough idea of what speeds I would be getting. If you are really serious about this set up there is equipment out there to boost cell signal in your house. I like WeBoost.
4) Download your tethering application. I have tried multiple apps but only one worked perfectly but with different hardware you might have other results. Clockworkmod Tether ($4.99) and PDAnet+ ($7.95) worked alright but I had issues with it talking to my router and clients so disconnects where frequent and frustrating. I ultimately went for EasyTether ($9.99) and it has been working fantastic. Mind you when using Clockwork and PDAnet I would be getting a DL speed of 6Mbs when my phone was 13Mbs. I don't know what would cause that but with EasyTether I am getting speeds very similar to my phone with no speed loss.
5) All three tethering applications require you to install a sister program on your computer to work. So install that on your "slave" machine. They are all about the same process, install an .exe and drivers for your phone.
6) Test that everything is working. The tethering application will have instructions on how to USB tether your phone. We need to check that it will give your slave machine an internet connection. Simply open a web browser and see if it is working.
7) Great! Now your are connected and able to surf the web! But wouldn't it be great if you could use this on all your devices? This is where the router comes in play.
8) Now I don't know what router you are using but mine is an ASUS RT-N56U and the principle should be the same. Plug your router into power and reset it with the button on the back (10 seconds). Unplug from power. Connect the CAT cable to the WAN port of the router (the one that usually connects a modem to the router) and the other end to the LAN port of your slave machine. Plug power to the router and allow it to boot up. Now on your slave machine go to Network and Sharing Center, View status on the tether connection, properties, sharing, check Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection, select the Home networking connection as the router. With everything done correctly you should be getting an internet connection to the router.
9) Now this is all fine and dandy but there are some settings in the router you can configure to make it more reliable. Our cases could be different but this is what has worked for me. I'm no networking genius by any means so my setting could not mean anything. In my experience things would work for a few mins but streaming to chromecast or connecting a mac to wireless mysteriously cut all connection. So here are my settings.
Disable MAC Filter
Disable Wireless Scheduler
Enable IGMP Snooping
Enable DHCP Server
Disable DHCP Routes
Disable Multicast routing (IGMP Proxy)
WAN Connection Type-Automatic IP
Enable UPnP
Connect to DNS Server automatically-NO
DNS Server1 8.8.8.8
DNS Server2 8.8.4.4
Everything else is default
I don't know about the NAT for all you gamers out there but I am sure there is some router configuration you can do. If anyone has ideas on how to achieve this please chime in.
10) Congratulations! You have now set up a home network with your phone and can use it like any other ISP. If you experience any issue with this process let me know and I will get back to you with an answer. I have had to do a lot of trouble shooting to get to this point.
