This is gonna sound weird but I rebooted my phone earlier and I suddenly have a new app called DSA Client (com.sprint.dsa.apk). I went to launch it but it just force closes. Does anybody else have this installed? I have since removed it since I'm rooted but it was in /data/app. From what I can tell by hex editing the resources, it's just some Hello World app. The classes.dex file has "dsa.spcsdns.net" in there and a bunch of stuff about MEID, ESN, MSID, Self Activation, AAA Auth Algorithms, and other CDMA info like that.
Anybody have any ideas?

Virus?
Are you using Superuser Whitelist? Probably a good idea if you have su sitting out there in /system/bin.
Directory System Agent (DSA) software supports directory data bases, I guess it's used in some of Sprint's areas

Hi Everyone,
I have recently installed the .cab version 1.2.4 of Smart Protect to my HTC Touch HD, however when I came to uninstall it, which I tried by entering the password "123456" to the programs built in uninstaller, this was unsucessful as it gave me an error message.
So I went to settings, system, remove programs and tried from there (it didn't ask for a password). This cleared the application from the programs menu, although now when I start the phone it gives me an error securityservice.exe cannot start... or something along those lines.
Basically I'm just asking for an uninstaller/instructions to manually uninstall, here is a list of some of the processes that I believe this program might be using: rapiclnt, SmsCommand.exe, NK.exe BTW I dont know for sure but I've never seen these processes running before so I suspect that the program has not completely uninstalled. Also there are still some reg keys (which I dont want to remove without someone with more experience has told me its safe to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, ControlPanel, Security, SSecure.
Thanks in advance,
Grant.
P.S. I've also posted on the devolopers tread but i haven't had a reply so i guess that the thread is dead.
\windows\startup
and delete the shortcut to it
Thanks for the advice Should I delete the reg key that I talked about in my first post? Because it stores all of the Smart Protect settings, e.g partner number, app password(encrypted), partner name ect...
Again thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated.
Grant.
My root attempt failed.
Anyway I trying to get my phone back up and running. I have the stock setting back and attempting to restore from mybackup pro. When it goes to restore it displays each app saying, can not restore apk files because of the phone setting and can not restore app that are not from the market.
Well all my apps are from the market so any idea what to do next? It shows my backup file it just doesn't load it because of my setting which I can not change. My file shows all my apps as a apk file.

It's not going to restore apps like that unless you're rooted and have sideloading capability.
If the phone is telling you it can't restore apps that aren't from the market, and all of your apps are from the market, then there isn't a problem, in itself...
It's where those market apps are at when you're trying to restore them that's the problem. Even though you originally got them from the market, mybackup is trying to pull them from your SD card. Unless you're rooted with sideloading, the phone considers any .apk that isn't directly installed from the market to be an "unknown source," and blocks it.
If you previously chose to have the phone backup your apps and settings via Google, market would reinstall the apps for you. If not, you're going to have to manually redownload them from the market, based on the list you can see in mybackup/from what you remember you had installed.

Just great, here goes hours of fun!!!! Now I am determine to root.
Thanks
Just thinking I do have the side loader wonder machine and have installed apk files (swype) using it. Can I go into my SD card some how and grab the files that way. I am needing some of the data that I have in some of my apps.
For example, I use the "keeper" to store my personal info and account numbers. I need to retrieve this info along with a few others!!!

Well, I'm not familiar with that app, but it depends on how it stores it's data.
If it has some kind of mechanism for storing your data remotely, like on some server or something, and would auto sync your data in a similar fashion to how Google does it with contacts, then that would work.
If it had some kind of export function to put your stuff in a separate file that you could retrieve later...
Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you, because if it wasn't one of the above two scenarios, chances are the app stores your data in a private database, in a special area of the phone that is inaccessible to any other app on an unrooted phone.
If this is the case, though it appeared mybackup was doing what you wanted it to, it wasn't doing EXACTLY what you wanted it to... It was backing up the apps themselves, the .apks, but not the data that corresponds to them.
It's confusing and a bit misleading for someone new to all of this Android customization stuff.... I got burned the same way the first time I rooted.
You kind of have to root before you start initially filling your phone with data. Once you root though, you CAN use mybackup pro to backup apps + data. I own the app myself. It's capable of doing it, it just needs root access first.
Hope you get it worked out...

No problem.
Nothing beats a good old text file on the computer with your passwords as a backup. (In a password protected zip file or something).

Anyone know of a app that will copy photos as they are taken on the phone to a second folder as a backup? I know there are a couple of apps that will sync things out to a cloud but I am wanting to monitor the usage on a few phones without paying a service. I already found a way to backup the text messages quietly but nothing I have found will back up the photo's. Anything that syncs will not help me if they delete things. I want to know what was done on the phone even if it was deleted and recovery apps are hit or miss pulling deleted data after a week or two if the phone is used a lot. Or if there is a free monitoring app that is hidden well or even a recylce bin type app that you can hide. I tried dumpster or recycle bin for android but once you hide those apps with something like audio manager they dont function while hidden. The phones in question are LG mytouch phones running android 2.3.6 and are rooted so that isnt a issue.
I am still trying to figure this out. Anyone?
Hi guys.
I need some help or instructions.
I have in my Asus an app that is good, but always crashes. This is a system app called Asus MyLibrary, or Asus Reader.
This doesn't happen only to me, but its known to always crash for everybody
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...ashes-every-time-i-try-start-asus-reader.html
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/applications/26417-my-library-replacement.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155510
The fix to the problem is turn wifi and data off (or turn on Airplane mode), then it will work fine.
Many people think it is because the app tries to connect to Asus servers (which are down) and this crashes the app.
I would like some help on how to disable this seeking of an internet connection within the app, then recompile it, sign it.
But then it is a system app. Can it be installed as a normal app? (My device is not rooted).
I have tried another app that reads the apk, removes permission to access the net, and packages it into a new apk. This apk wouldn't install in my device. Perhaps because the package name is the same still. I tried modifying the package name (com.asus.reader) to something else (I called it MyReader, com.android.myreader), recompiled, signed, zip aligned, and it still won't install. (App not installed). Perhaps it is conflicting with the original system app still in the phone?
I have two attachments, one is the original apk from the system folder, and reader-sz.apk is the one i've tried to modify the name and package, then signed, and zipaligned. Did I do something wrong that it won't install in the device?
In summary, there are two questions really.
1) Why doesn't reader-sz.apk install in my device? I've changed the app name and package name in the manifest.xml
2) How do I remove (or disable, or nullify) the app from accessing the internet, from within the app itself? (I think simply removing permissions will still crash it, may need to go into the functions itself, is that even possible?)
Please if anyone can guide me, I think you may help many-many users.
Hi all.
I'm after quite specific need but would like to know more general answer / solution if possible at all.
I know that wihtout being rooted there's not much one can do with system folders, but still, there are some ways and tricks to get to them, one of them being Backup option provided by android, using ADB shell.
I'm after specific file, that is /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs/com.android.mms.categoryInfo.xml
Using Htc One M8, stock rom, I've tried to do adb backup of com.android.mms application, but all I got was 1kb (actually 41 bytes) sized file, which contains nothing.
I wonder, is there any other way to get to the specific system app folder, if you're NOT rooted?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Additional info: I'm after that file because it has stored Secure message box password in Plain text. My phone is about to go to the service due to several issues, including battery getting way overheated when used, and not charging over 25% at all, and the only thing left to make a backup is the secure box storage, which I used as an "Other inbox" folder in order to have the main Inbox a bit more "clean", and I know I've set it to something stupid and short, and I've accessed them not long ago, but for the f's sake I can't get in the folder anymore (and I'm highly betting that after several attempts even the real password is no longer accepted, and that being the reason I can't figure out the pass by trying, but there's nowhere info it thats true, and if so, how long to wait before real one would be accepted etc...)
Big thanks if anyone could help out, if not - not gonna be the end of the world. But would kinda like to store some of the messages that are newer than my latest backup...
Cheers!

Yes and not.
if you don't have root access, you can not copy an application from the system folder, to make this the ADB would need root permissions. but....
You can download the stock rom, and copy/extract/edit the app you need it.

Actually no, if the file is user specific, as in my case, the help of stock rom's file is not gonna help.
Anyway, SOLVED now.
As per this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054401
The backup of the app was made and got the file. I've done the same thing without success, because on HTC, the messaging app is com.htc.sense.mms and NOT com.android.mms.
Therefore creating backup of the com.htc.sense.mms did result kin getting exactly what I needed.
In the extraction of the tar .ab archive using dd in linux, I got folder app, within there is a folder com.htc.sense.mms, wihtin there's a folder sp, and there is com.htc.sense.mms.categoryInfo.xml which has the secure box password stored in plaintext.
Voila! )
