Hi everybody,
I'm developing web site for mobile and I've faced an issue on our server. When I want to upload a picture and when I'm connected to the GPRS mode I experienced a random failure. Sometimes the image is received and sometimes not.
I'm using Opera 9.51b2, with IE everything is fine and I can upload. Other crazy difference is when I'm using a wifi connection I don't have this problem (or maybe once or two when I had a crap signal)
I did some tcpdump on the server and apparently the upload is ended after about 17ko (why?). Opera sends a FIN ACK around this amount of data.
Here an example of the exchange:
POST an image
chunk
chunk
chunk
around ACK 17000 Client send a ACK FIN
Server continue to send data and send a success page
I've tried on other website as well like imageshack.us pikipimp.com and I've the same result.
I've also tried with different phone models and operators and I think this issue is more frequent with old phone.
If this issue is related with a bad connection and/or with old phone, why is it such a difference between opera and ie ?
Thank you

Phone: HTC Wizard (T-Mobile MDA)
Current Rom: X-Plore 2.0
Radio: 2.19.11
Network: T-Mobile USA
Since upgrading to X-Plore 2.0 I am able to use Netfront, Internet Explorer, SMS, and MMS. But programs like Pocket IRC, the FTP client within Total Commander, and things like that won't connect to the net. I have verified that my settings are correct, So I donot understand what is occuring. All these worked perfectly before the upgrade but now donot at all. Unfortunately I donot have a Data Cable any longer to try and see if it was merely the rom or something else.
Please someone help!
This includes Windows Live (not connecting). I don't get it, why are browsers connecting but not my apps?
Okay just tried a hard reset. Still No Bueno.
If this helps:
Programs That Do Connect:
1. IE
2. NetFront
3. Opera (loaded only to test if it would connect)
4. SKTools (When it connects to see if there are updates available)
5. Tweaks2K2.Net (When it connects to see if updates are available)
Programs that DONOT connect:
1. PocketIRC (Keeps acting like it kind find a server to connect to just jumps from ip addy to ip addy trying to connecy)
2. Total Commander FTP Plugin (Says ''Username not accepted; Offline'' And that is on multiple FTP's including XDA'S!!)
3. Windows Live
Now I have verified my settings in connections and the fact that my browsers will connect shows me its able and is connecting and browsing the net. Please guys what could it be???? Thanks in advance!
And you are using GPRS ?
My WindowsLive is working ...i did not tested the others you said, but i am sure that Windows Live is connecting....except now, it won't work neither from my PC, that's M$'s bad not mine...
Mabe it's the connection or data plan. Are you sure that it worked before..or you changed data plan meanwhile ?
Yeah It worked before and I have not changed my data plan. If I recall it worked after the upgrade for a short while. Its been occuring for about a week now. Its bloody frusterating because my browsers all work, I can browse the internet, and do all that good stuff. I just cannot get things like PiRC & Total Commander to connect to the net. Even after a hard reset...Nothing. Could T-Mobile be blocking these apps? Of course once again that would not explain why NetFront and Opera, Sktools and Tweaks2k2 can connect. I am about to install OZ IM ill let you know if it works. Question though, Is there an alternative to using T-Mobile USA's 216 Proxy? Maybe a better one? Cuz maybe if I change the proxy to a non-T-Mobile one they won't be able to block it anymore..... Hmmm its an idea.
and sure enough OZ IM Connects its the one I found in the Ext. Rom
Yeah its gotta be a T-Mobile issue cuz all the programs that DONOT connect via GPRS/Edge connect perfectly via WIFI. Why would T-Mobile do that and is there a way around it?
Okay so I called T-Mobile and they deny doing anything of the sort. Which is good and bad. I am also getting a nice little messege in both WIFI and in GPRS when trying to download anything that states "This device is restricted from downloading this file type" when trying to download anything from the net. Any ideas?
Edit: I also called HTC and they said that there are no settings in the phone that would cuase this occurence which is bull becuase umm yeah....Anyway HTC tech support or at least every one of them that I talked to is for crud. Not very good support those guys.
Which data plan do you have? The $29.99 Internet one or the $5.99 T-zones one. If you only have the $5.99 plan, t-mobile filters a lot of the traffic that isn't on specific ports (ie port 80 for http works, but many other's won't) which causes some programs to not get network access. There were some proxies that allowed you to get around those, but a lot of them aren't working anymore last I heard.
If that's the case, probably your only solution is to pay for the full data plan which includes all ports internet access.
See the only reason I donot suspect the Data Plan being the issue (yes I have the 5.99 T-Mobile Web Plan, formely the $2.99 T-Zones) is because programs like NetFront and the like are connecting without issue. However I DO Suspect its a setting of some sort within the phone. I am going to try a level 2 Hard Reset (the one done with the combination of buttons) and see what happens. I tried a level 1 hard reset (The clear storage) to no avail. The level 2 hard reset will hopefully wipe it.

I am in the same boat as you. With my tinkering I found that programs automatically connect to the connection called "The Internet" which there is no way I can edit.
It connects to this "The Internet" automatically even when I set it to connect to my Proxy setting connection in Settings>Connections>Advanced tab on the bottom>Select Networks. Could that be the problem?
Okay after my Hard Reset 2 (the combination of buttons, I was finally able to get to download programs again, however I am back to having a 1MB download limit. And in answer to your question yes I have the same thing even though I don't have a connection called ''the internet'' other thing I have noticed is that the connection ISP does not allow for the assigning of a proxy server. Even though you can just make a new connection and assign a proxy server to that new one. This however does not circumvent our little issue. Nor does it get rid of my 1MB dl limit. Anichulis do you know how to change programs defualt connections away from Internet and assign them to use GPRS?
Hey This issue, is still occuring any ideas?
I have a very irritating problem I can't figure out. With many password protected sites (like yahoo!mail, bloglines, gmail, etc.) i cannot get past the username/password. I keep getting back to it no matter what I input.
The most crazy thing is that this behaviour happens only if I am on mobile data connection (3G or GPRS) but not if I have a wired or wi-fi connection! Also it does not depend on the browser (it happens both wiht ie and opera).
I have absolutely no more ideas of what the reason can be. Does anybody have a clue?
P.S. Before getting the raphael I was using another smartphone and didn't have this problem either :-(
Thanks
The application Facebook was ever too slow and I do not using it. I was login from browsers and everything was okay. Few days ago in all browsers I have, was impossible to see any image content on site of Facebook. So I download thems application but there was same problem. It loading pretty fast but it skip to load the photos. Even after selecting a thumbnail and open the photo I get only the black background of the image viewer of Facebook. But today I discover a very strange case. This problem with Facebook images is existing only on wifi networks. All other sites loading images without any bugs. When I am connected with my mobile data Facebook works perfect. I tryed too many times with switching to wifi and mobile data this morning. It load the photos only over mobile data. The net on my home router is much faster for sure but Facebook works better on the slower mobile data. 90 % of my surfing is browsing photos with huge resolution in hundred sites. The problem is only on Facebook site. At least is working over the mobile data and I can still use it. On my laptop everything is okay all the story of the post is about my android phone. Any ideas what stoppes Facebook working normal over wifi?

Well ayydin, your not alone. This is a huge problem for them at the moment and there is seemingly little known as to what is suddenly causing this, and when a fix might appear. Just be reassured that there are a million + other prople out there with the same problems. FYI, I tried many fixes, nothing solved the problem in the long run.
Whenever I launch Facebook while on Wifi, it tries to go to the mobile connection. But since Mobile Data is off, it doesn't work.
I go into LogCat and see something about "ipv6dns current tech is 14" message.
I've tried using SetDNS to bind IPv6 to IPv4, but no go... Facebook is the primary problem, but it seems like other apps (browser, twitter) tries the mobile network first instead of the Wifi... and every time it's due to IPv6 in Logcat... Still don't have an answer though.
I sometimes experience the same problem. It's so irritating that I practically stopped using FB on my phone...
All,
I am a new Note 10.1 Wifi(GT-N8013) owner and am struggling with an issue that seems to not be entirely isolated to me. Based on what I've read in this forum it seems to stem from router compatibility. The issue I'm having is that file transfers via wifi start out at full speed and after some random period of time between 1 and 60 seconds the speed degrades until the transfer stops completely.
I have tried transferring using ES File Explorer via FTP and LAN, I've also tried via LAN using Astro. When using the Play store to perform a large app update the transfer will just hang on updating, forcing me to ultimately kill it and restart it, however sometimes it will succeed. The youtube app will often not load the related content on the channels page i.e. comments, other video links, etc. instead just showing the 'loading circle' in it's the place where this content should show up. Usually if I navigate to another channel or video then go back to the one I wanted to watch, it will successfully load and play the video. I have several other networked devices in my house(GS3, Asus TF101, GN2, Laptops, etc.) that all have no issues.
I have two routers with one serving as the main internet connection and the secondary serving as a WDS extender. One is a Linksys brand, the other a Buffalo brand. Both are b/g routers. Both are running DD-WRT v24-SP2. All connected devices are given a specifically assigned(Via Mac Address) ip address via DHCP.
Things I have tried to resolve this:
Changed the channel on the router
Set the Note tablet to a static IP address
Connected to each router
Restarted the tablet
Sat right next to the router(To determine if it was a range issue)
Disabled power saving mode on the tablet
Interestingly I don't seem to have issues when performing a file transfer via Dolphin browser. I used it last night to install some of the Humble Bundle games. A couple of them were around 500MB and the download completed with no issues.
I also am able to run and complete several Speedtest.net speedtests in a row without a timeout or hiccup.
One thing to note in particuluar: I set up my Note 2 to as an access point and tethered my tablet to it. When using this configuration, I was then able to transfer the entire file via FTP this way, albiet slower than being on WiFi.
I should point out that when this is occurring, The Wifi icon is present and both the upload and download arrows are showing activity so it appears that my connection is good and solid.
As I said, I did search this forum and found a few threads that relate this same issue, however no apparent resolution was posted. Are any of you experiencing this and if so, did you solve it, and if so, how?
Could this be a router issue? And if so, what other brands are recommended? I've been wanting to upgrade to N, this might be a good opportunity to do so...
Thanks.
Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you're experiencing more issues with Google services (play store, yahoo, docs). If that's the case, you're not alone and it's neither your tablet nor your router. Do a search for slow Google services and you'll find a bunch of speed fixes, some which work fine at times then become irrelevant. I haven't found a good solution myself.
Good luck.

I wouldn't say it's with Google services specifically. As I said even using ES File explorer to try to copy files over wifi either via the LAN feature or the FTP feature will result in the transfer ultimately timing out. And the size of the file doesn't appear to be a factor as it does this whether the file is 50MB or 500MB. I am not sure why I'm able to transfer with no issues via a browser vs a network share or ftp browser. Maybe the http protocol is better at handling hiccups in the transfer process.
Very frustrating to say the least.
it is not the fw either.. I use dd wrt at both home and work with no issues

Anyone interested in a challenge?
This is more of a question to those people who have knowledge on Wi-Fi router configurations, but I am really hoping maybe somebody has experienced this and found a solution.
Probably the reason why I haven't found a "solution" (in quotes since my Wi-Fi is not really broken) is because I don't know how to word this correctly so that a Google search can be successful so I'll try to explain myself as best as I can.
Here is my problem:
My home's Wi-Fi seems to be having this issue where it takes a while to connect to servers (or at least, that's what I think is going on)
Once it establishes a connection to a server, it seems to run fine there on out.
For example:
Please check this video out: Video
This is a game called "Shadowgun Deadzone", a multi-player game. When I'm on Wi-Fi, notice how it gets stuck on "Authentication in progress" for more than a minute?
Later on in the video, I close it, turn off my Wi-Fi and re-open the game and it only takes SECONDS to get to the same screen with my carrier's network.
No, my internet is not slow. Web-page browsing and watching videos is as expected from a 10 mbps internet speed and also playing the game mentioned runs excellent once I get it to connect, only on things like this game is where it takes a while to establish an "initial" connection to the servers
What do I mean with "things like this"? Well, WhatsApp is something that to my knowledge also connects to a server to send images and media, right?
Check this second video out: Second Video
This example is a little bit less clear, but it also seems that connecting to the "server" takes twice as long than if I do it with my carrier's network.
So here's what I know:
1. It's not device specific. This happens with any cellphone using things like what I mentioned above.
2. Not the device's fault either since I play this exact game on my aunt's house and it connects fast as expected
3. Router firewall is deactivated.
4. I've also got a Nintendo 3DS, doesn't take as long to connect to Nintendo Network and play online
5. I've tried labeling my cellphone as "game console" (same as my 3DS) on the router settings, but it doesn't help, it changes nothing
6. This "problem" doesn't exist on web browsing, downloading stuff, Youtube, and a few minor things
I know the fastest solution probably is to get a new router, which I will do in due time, but I'm really hoping to skip that step if I can. This is really bugging me and rather than avoiding this by buying a new router I want to learn what is a possible cause and fix it. I'm pretty sure learning how to deal with this could be helpful in the future.
Is it specific to WiFi?
This feels like a DNS issue. Some devices initial connection working fine and others not could be a DNS caching issue.
Clear the cache of all devices then try to connect to a site one at a time and time them. If they are all around the same speed after clearing the cache then it's probably a DNS thing.
I wonder if a cell phone gets a domain resolved on mobile, caches it, then use the cache when on wifi instead of making a new query. Just a shot in the dark

I will certainly give this a try.
Yes, it's Wi-Fi exclusive. Only at my home's Wi-Fi, because I've played this game at other places via Wi-Fi and I don't have this problem so what you suggest might not work. I'm almost certain there must be something wrong with this Wi-Fi router, some configuration getting in the way.
Download something like FCC Speed Test that shows more than up and down, specifically things like dropped packets. Run it three times on the same device at both locations and compare. Have you checked the routers logs for anything out of the ordinary?

For some reason this app "FCC Speed Test" is showing as incompatible with all my devices, I really hope it doesn't need some kind of special Wi-Fi chip that makes this app work. The "newest" device I have is a Note 3. Went ahead and downloaded the apk file.
I'll get that done today and post the results to see if you can see the problem more clearly.
I am really not a person that knows much about networking and technical details. I just know the VERY basic things.
Things like how to change my router password, view who is using my Wi-Fi signal and block them via a Mac address. The VERY basic stuff. So I wouldn't be able to detect anything unusual in the router logs
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate you taking your time to respond to this. I will probably have these results in a few hours since I'm at work (I will also test this at my work's Wi-Fi as I also don't have a problem here. Not that I play this game at work but I've given it a test and it doesn't have the same problem as my home's Wi-Fi)
Thanks again

Unfortunately both places (my house and my aunt's house) stats look exactly the same. Both places dropped packets once. I ran it once at my work place and is the lowest you'll see in the attached screenshots.
I can't find a solution. I am close to giving up
Thanks for your help and your time
