What is the fundamental difference between Hero and the G1 OS? - G1 Android Development

There are so many roms around there an one thing I cannot find is at a fundamental level,(user level) what do we gain out of using the hero rom rather than the regular g1 OS?
Is there a killer app that only works on hero? is the hero interface, better? majorly different? would like to know, please?

Could you really not find it, or did you not look? This isn't even remotely close to being in the correct section either..
To sum it up however, HTC's "Sense UI" that is implemented on HERO is essentially a home replacement (like openhome, ahome, etc...). It features many graphical enhancements as well as widgets that are not available on the stock android builds.

This link will tell you everything you need to know:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/epic fail/scooters61/EpicFail.jpg

Its mostly cosmetic. Everything in HERO looks better than standard ota 1.5 android. I weighed the options of running HERO ROM or Cyanogen and HERO came out on top. I just love the way HERO looks. I love it so much, that I gave up use of my blue tooth headset.
.....the only thing I can suggest is to do some research on a "proper" installation of a HERO ROM and experience it for yourself.

toxtrepla:
to the first point, yes I looked, there is no site, thread that just has that simple explanation. I'm sure it's there, it's just buried.
Point 2. yeah, your right. my thinking was this is a forum full of hero and non-hero roms, so it would be good here, but really, I could have put it elsewhere. Thank you very much for the info.

Thanks for the pic.
SG_Shadow:
Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out. as soon as I get time to clean out my sdcard.
thanks all again.

If it were only the eye candy.... What sets Hero apart is the way it integrates your social network in one place. Right now there's support for Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Plurk, Picassa, Google, and your Exchange contacts. All of those can be merged, so say, if your friend Sally from work ([email protected]) has a twitter and facebook account, you can exchange tweets quickly and the phone will notify you they're from Sally. Also, you're out and trying to decide which pair of shoes you should get for Saturday night's ball, and you can't decide, you snap a quick picture, uploaded to your facebook (right from the camera app) and then tweet Sally to help you choose, be quick, though, your wife's almost back

@rkimbal45
What the first guy meant was you didn't look to see they have a Q&A section for what you asked, which was a question... From my point of view you have no investigative skills which led you to asking this question and not being able to find the proper place to ask it.... but hey who really post their questions in the Q&A now-a-dayz?
PS. Q&A=Questions and Answers

Wish list and fix requests for FUZE including FM Radio!?!

Welcome... The Fuze is here and below are some of my initial feelings regarding the phone. Hopefully you guys can answer some question and provide feedback as well.
Got it... Had to argue with employees to find a store that would sell it to me.
Funny damn thing is this. They coud have inventoried them and then gave them to us but rather they, some of the ATT employee's, were being lazy so I just had to find a store that would sell it to me.
First impressions... Software complaints... Yes I want it all.
FIXED here on XDA = THANK YOU!!! First off, where is the DAMN clock that is animated. Damn you ATT wtf would you get rid of this for. You are asking for mods when you do Shiz like that. Anyone know how to get this back and in general the black theme overall?
To that point, First 1B... Why can't we change the there period and if so how?
Second, Youtube, Where are you??? I can go to the site but the youtube application sure the hell doesn't work cause I can't even find it.
Third, The messaging feature is way cooller than the proprietary WM6.1 junk but what sux is that A. id doesn't collect all the messages for you from one person... and B. when you reply it just goes back to the native WM6.1 isn't there a way someone could get this to be the actuall text program???
Forth, Where the hell is the external camera button. I will first thing change the PTT to the camera button but what the heck would you get rid of this for?
Fifth, where is the damn program that cuts songs mid stream and allows you to have them as a ring tone???
Try reading the threads here and searching. I bought mine yesterday and have found almost everything you mention!

Thanks... would it be possible for the texting through the touch3d interface... And lastly, could someone write something that would enable windows live to be underneath the new youtube icon?
I like threaded text and wish the interface did it as well. I just hate the format in which WM 6.1 does it in... Does that make sense?

Since this is obviously a redundant thread created by someone who didn't spend much time looking, i think you should be careful with the words that you choose. The was correct in saying that most of what you requested is easy to find if you look for it. If you have a questions related to FM radio, you might try posting it in the threads already talking about the FM radio feature. Also, maybe posting ideas about development of TF3D in any of the existing TF3D threads. I bet the guys who are best suited to integrate the features you're looking for will see it there.

Most stuff that runs on the diamond will run on the touch pro, and almost everything that runs on a touch pro will run on a Fuze. Really the difference will only be something that needs the front camera to run i would think. You should feel plenty confident that you'll be able to hack your Fuze to your heart's content.

The main exception that I've found is themes. A lot of the Diamond themes won't work right on the Fuze in landscape mode (with the keyboard slid out). Some will work but it seems kind of hit-and-miss.

yeah it's the same with the polaris, nike, and kaiser. The devices that don't support landscape obviously aren't gonna work very well in landscape. But a lot of the times the issues with software is being at the right resolution. Themes...well that's definitely a different story.

I agree with this post. Everything here should have been provided WITHOUT having to 'hack' the phone. Much of these things I was expecting as well that also convinced me to buy this phone.
Yeah, yeah...give it some time, they'll be hacks galore for the Fuze specific, since the Diamond things aren't completely 'compatable' with the Fuze.
I think ATT did much too much as far as stripping down this phone.
And they have the nerve to keep the HTC name...[HTC Fuze] Ha!
What part of HTC is still left on it??

This is a good one-stop shop for these links. Might it be useful (to avoid redundancy) for the Mods to move these links into this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439781 (this is the sticky "Useful Links thread" on the Raphael discussion section).
Might be good to continue updating that thread so we don't get so many new threads like "How do I get the FM Radio to work" etc...
Ok, heres my wish for my new fuze. i wat to view flash content such as mlb.tv and some radio stations such as wfan NY, but the phone doesn't do it. if someone could let me know how to do this i would love it.

Actually, there has been some development since that thread. Take a look at this one. It is possible to map the PTT button using AE Button Plus (all except for single-press, which apparently causes the Home button to do the assigned action as well as bringing up the Home page, but the other three possibilities seem for the moment to work okay).

Thank you as this information is actually better than the other thread given. This seems to work pretty well.

Haykuro... TheDudeOfLife... JesusFreke... Where do I go???

I am not complaining about the multiple choices we have now when it comes to cooked, rooted ROMS for the G1. God, no! I love having the choice and can't thank either of the 3 main creators or everyone that's helped make these possible enough. However, even I who have been following the development am at a point where I really don't know which of the builds is right for me, because I can't find a centralized thread explaining the differences. I know differences change with every build released, but I feel going through one thread [kept as uncluttered and free of the "me too" or "can't wait" type comments as possible] would be useful.
I, for example, am still enjoying Hayrkuro's 5.0.2Hr5 build because I refuse to give up the HTC dialer (with T9 support) and I am not sure if any of the newer builds still have it. Do they?
And, again, if someone with enough knowledge of all 3 could provide a detailed comparison of features, that would be great. Keep in mind that, for most people that come here looking for advise, "based on the HTC or Google build" doesn't say much. They'd want to know what the HTC build has that the Google build doesn't, and viceversa.
One more time... To Haykuro, TheDudeOfLife and you, JesusFreke, who started it all, thank you for putting the community first!
They are all based on the 1.5 build from htc. I believe things like the htc keyboard can be pretty easily added to the 2 other builds. They seem to be sharing a lot of the same tweaks as well. I honestly would just go with the newest build by however releases it. Main difference? They come bundled with different apps. Anyone need to correct me on this?
I'm curious if anyone's done a side-by-side comparison of the 3 builds? I, too, am curious as to which one will suit my needs/desires.
Maybe it would be asking too much, but is there any sort of base-line for comparing these builds? I'm going with JF's for now, because it's been changed the least from the original (as far as I've read) but who knows?
It's very difficult to make an educated choice, when all I've read is something like "Awww, diz rom iz da only 1 wurth haven! da udder 1ez suxxorz!" (and yes, I've actually read a post like that one)
I truly enjoy the variety and choices available to us, but is there any real way to compare these builds?
test drive
im a firm believer in to each his own.. on that note the best advice is to test drive the builds for 2-3 days yourself to make that decision effectively im on the dudes .93 and i dont see any other builds being that much of a difference, but like i stated to each his own! everyone has a different liking.. so take the time and test drive the different bulids to give the dev's a fair chance at your personal opinion...
P.S. Dude's will be the only one w/ a default theme by MANUP456!!!. . . . hint-hint
Try all 3 of them and thats that. Everyone will have dif opinions, likes and dislikes. Its not gonna be that difficult to try all 3 of them if you have the time. If you do just make sure you wipe before switching from build to build. My opinion? I tried Haykuros G/ADP and JF, all pretty awesome, for now im sticking with JF. I do miss the transition from the G build though.
Ive been bouncing between all three myself today... We need a app that auto loads each rom of our choice...

Not really like the G build, i am using spare parts and it is nice, if i had a choice i would go with G's. BTW the fade in and out its not bad either, i really liked the shrink and expand from the G's, spare parts its more like shrink, swing then expand, after the swing i dont really like the transition. But im not complaining though, matter of taste i guess.
my understanding of all three builds is just as everyone has stated before...
- they are all builds off of ADP1.5, so as the operating system features go.. they are identical.
- and the apps and accompanying system tweaks are the basic differences between the builds
i like em all n wish there was a list to compare.. but really no build is "completely" done... so just gotta rotate them n find ur match
my main focus now is widgets n cupcake apps
stuck on Hr5 build cant give up the dialer and the pdf viewer loved how fast jf was though

Load them.

Decide for yourself.

I'm still hoping someone will answer my question. Does any of these builds have the HTC dialer? If not, is there a way to replace the standard one after installing the ROM?

2nd that. I would love to be able to have multiple versions installed at once but don't know if it is possible from what I have read.

What Ive Never Understood...

This may be irrelevant and this thread will probably be closed, but Ive had a few while Im looking for a new rom and it lead me to a question.
WHY DONT ALL THE DEVELOPERS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE ROM?
Im sure on of the ultimate answers would be based off of preference etc. but if we would all unite towards one specific goal, not only would we have more solid builds... but we would have more versions (lite, etc) but more themes, faster updates, etc.
I mean ive used this site for a couple years with different phones and we all seem to want the same thing. Speed, reliability, better battery life, etc. So why dont we conference, put our individual talents to use, create specific focuses and put together something Google themselves need to compete with.
I know a lot of the devs here already work together and I have no problems with the way things are... nor am I trying to disrepect any of the hard work you all have contributed. I was just thinking out loud.
Comments?
There is a similiar Thread already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572788
this is not a development topic. this belongs in q&a
We ARE working together, but we want to create ROMs for different purposes.
'ultimate' is pretty subjective.
it's easy to see all the different, seemingly random threads about different roms and mods and assume there's no teamwork involved, but really, it's just different people trying different things and when one works well most others adapt it. otherwise, everyone has a different 'ideal rom' anyways.
it's a fairly darwinian approach, but it works pretty well. you COULD try to get everyone to organize and work on one idea, but i think we can save that for companies like htc, motorola, huawei, samsung, google, etc.
besides, anyone who follows this or other android dev sites for more than a couple weeks knows which devs to kep an eye on.
what i feel is the ultimate rom, you don't think is the ultimate rom...
the ultimate ROM for me is feature lite, and fast.

And I like fast and feature heavy. Best of everything. :-D
All of your responses is exactly what I mean... Lets say for example, the devs focused on the fastest, most stable and lightest rom as a base. then moved on a way to easily create or modify a theme.
from there, we could move on to different versions... like a hero or blur, etc.
ultimately, every user is going to pick there favorite programs, so maybe we develop a way to easily choose which programs you want included before you flash the rom and voila...
i mean, im sure im making this sound easier than it might be, but with clear and open communication/ exchanging ideas and coming to a reasonable base... the possibilities are endless.
users could focus on the aesthetics like icons, themes, widgets, etc.
ALL WE NEED IS A SOLID BASE...
sure, there are some talented individuals accomplishing this on their own and thats all fine and understandable. I just know that with the power of many over one... a lot more could be accomplished easier, more deliberately and effectively.
Each dev could have a specialty that they focus on...
1. Themes
2. Troubleshooting
3. Speed/ Framework
4. Battery Life
5. The list goes on...
Create an FTP for everyone to access and we could show Google exactly what theyve been hoping for... which is developers alike coming together for the greater good... again, this is just my opinion, but im glad ppl are leaving their input
and with the choosing of apps example... my idea is, if there were a lite version and an ftp or somewhere to host a list of signed apks that you could choose via checkmark, click download and it would automatically save them to a special folder on the sd card. then, the lite version could have a script that auto runs during the initial boot to install directly from this folder on the sd card.
I guess im just trying to create simplicity for the newbs and the devs or veterans that have been on the site and are tired of flaming or answering the same question.
I say, we streamline this process, create simplicity through orginization and leave more room for progress...
Ok, well thats all i have for now... I mean, I have a lot more ideas, but we'll see where this goes...
It's HTC / Google's fault for releasing different models of the same phone, as most blog publishers are oblivious to the difference and post news under the *insert adverb here* title 'htc magic donut'
Well michael this thread did prove one very important thing. That even if your a senior member on this website you dont know jack. First cyan knows the nines and round here noone can really improve his stuff but him. Hence the reason he wont do his own hero rom. They lag no matter what. Sure you can take out all the widgets cut some fat off rosie. Well hell at that point just theme a donut rom. Running the heros and blurs r fun on g1 and mytouch. But if u ever actually pick up a hero phone or blur phone and test them.... u would see a huuuuuuuuuuuuge dif in performance. So basicly the guys know their crap. All of them. and they do work together. Read a drizzy post. Or other dev post. They always thank whoever for help. And if you want your ultimate rom follow cyan he will make it eventually.

You my friend are a pure genius, the problem is users ignorant and ROM makers naturally have low self-esteem. You see, take a guy like Haykuro he built the foundation for the first ROMs on the sapphire. Now he's fizzled out. BUT in the beginning he was the ****... Sure in every ROM maker's thread you will find credits etc. but that's all just ass kissing... You see, NO ROM MAKER DON'T MAKE ****! The only thing they get is an EGO BOOST! Who doesn't like an Ego boost? Developers at Google, HTC etc. Because they make $90,000+ a year doing what they do and they have normal lives with a wife and kids ideally... As for ROM makers on XDA they are either A) former workers at Google, HTC etc. who have grudges against their former employers OR B) they never got a real job working for a high end corporation like Google, HTC, etc. and ended up bumming it on XDA hoping one of their "fans" will buy they a lap dance... OR C) They are rich as **** and just love doin this **** for the hell of it because they like making ROMS, getting credit and most importantly, recognition and they ASS kissed constantly by people they don't even know... So there you have it in a nutshell with this kind of mix of developers, the ULTIMATE ROM is simply not possible... I certainly doubt I will never see it in my day or if we all go in 2012... If anyone does come up with something even slightly close to the ULTIMATE ROM I bet it will be Cyanogen or my man Dwang. Eugene was on the right track but he lost it when he turned out to be a SNiTcH AKA BIATCH of all ROM makers! But for real I love all ROM makers on XDA regardless of their motives or intentions, they spice up my life and hook my phone up and that makes them the ****. All of their work is appreciated obviously...

LOL... thank God for the internet. Id read some of the debates youve had in other threads and they got me laughing. Im on the fence, because Im not one to take sides, but not only are you funny... but I actually agree with you on this. I mean, just one thread above me I have some guy telling me that I dont know what Im talking about. For one, Im not claiming to know all there is to know about these phones... or Id be working for Google making the big bucks... and two, he only reiterated things Id already disclaimed.
I didnt start this thread to get flamed, but opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.
I realize that most of my ideas wont see the light of day, because without the cash or proper credit, people wont work together unless they "get theirs"
A lot of these devs work their @$$es off and receive "tips" or donations purely because they love what they do and I respect that sincerely.
However, the idea that working "together" to create the ULTIMATE rom is possible. Devs asking for tips, help, or using work that one already accomplished isnt what im referring to. It would take moderators, coordinators, infrastructure, hierarchy, etc... To those that see the light of what im talking about, thank you... to the rest, thanks anyway

Read my words carefully... I am aware of what has gone on here on this site. I acknowledged that a lot of developers work well together. Unlike you, im not giving specific credit to any one or two individuals. We all know who has hit the brick and mortar with the foundations that have been set. A lot of those individuals communicate regularly.
I was nearly drawing into the fact that with technology, they could all (those who are willing, of course) conference regularly, establish agendas, specific tasks, and create a template. One that has been re-worked inside and out by each of their hands till there isnt any input that one individually could produce. From there, the focus objective could be the bigger picture like compatible themes, updates, easier installs, more features, etc.
I know im repeating myself to a degree, but I want to make sure the image is clear. There are a lot of devs doing the same thing, for some of the same reasons. But us users all come here for the SAME reason. To take our toy/ pride and joy/ project/ whatever you wanna call it... to the next level. To make it better than it was out of the box, to see the realms that it is truely capable of.
So rather than seeing some devs running into similar problems with their roms individually or simultaneously... One of two things would happen, either A: Solve it immediately once and for all or B: Catch the bug before it was even released. Hopefully my words inspire some of you. If not, keep up the great work.

SIM Cardless Optimization

I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example
furthermore - wrong section

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

anyway, i am not here to argue... i just feel that the original question belonged in the QnA section

[Q] Anybody Running HTC Sense ROM?

Hey guys,
New user here (and a CS major), so I know a little bit about what rooting and flashing is, however have NEVER done it, so implementation wise, I'm very naive about how to do it, and I definitely don't want to mess my phone up. My first Android device was purchased in November of last year with the MyTouch 4G. Made a great decision. Decided to upgrade to a G2X just recently, got it in Friday, purchased the docks for it today (which yes, I am slightly disappointed with)....but I miss the HTC Sense ROM.
Basically I'm wondering if the HTC Sense ROM is smoother and if anybody is using it on the phone yet. Any feedback would be great. Thanks guys!
Also, is there any way to change what the "hard" buttons on the front are set to do? If I rooted it could I change what these buttons did. I'd like to use the 'genius' button that HTC has on their MyTouch 4G instead of search.
I've also read through some of the threads about rooting and flashing to a new ROM. Basically is there anything I should know being a newbie when it comes to flashing and changing the ROM on it? Any hints or tips?
Thanks again!
There are no roms for the G2x yet.
This includes steps for Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050534
Once you have root access, you can go into the Market and download "Rom Manager".
This will download and install a custom Recovery Console which allows flashing.
Again, the phone is so new, there are no available Roms available at this time. We do have Root and Recovery which is 2/3 the way there.
Again, so I'm a little new to this whole rooting stuff, so there is no HTC Sense that will work with this phone because I have found some downloads, but I'm just not sure if they would work.
Again, I'm new here, so I don't know if this is one of those things I will have to wait a while for or what...any idea based on past phones?

I also love HTC Sense. It's the only thing I miss about the MyTouch 4g. I'm not sure which ROMS you are referring to, but there are no ROMS available for our phone yet, including Sense ROMS. I'd be very careful about flashing anything until you're comfortable with the steps, and lingo.
Got the G2X last week, upgraded from a virgin G1. I am also new to the root world. I have been browsing around the site here for the last couple of days. There is a wealth of information here, but it is a little overwhelming... Is there a thread/sticky/website that goes over the basics for a beginner. I apoligize in advance for being a newb.....
Thanks,
Mike

you really, really, really, need to STOP, and read. not being an ass. but, you're saying you've found some downloads, yet have no idea what they are. ???? or what phone they're for. or if they'll brick your phone. the devs are working on things to make it super simple for people like you to root and install roms. do them a favor by reading. and then, read a little more. ask some questions. post them in the correct section. and take peoples advice. that's the best advice i can give you. and, read the stickies at the top of threads.

I actually work for T-Mobile, I feel pretty comfortable with what I'm doing, and have no qualms about flashing but I will be careful as always about it. Yeah, I REALLY miss the messaging portion and genius button of the mytouch. Would love to get those two options back....
Also about my second question, when flashed does it change the outter "hard" buttons too? For instance instead of search could I use the search button as a genius button?

In time I think there will more guides/stickies. Unfortunately for you guys, I think the majority of the people that bought a G2x came from previous phones that they were flashing, rooting, and modding. You're in the right spot. XDA is definitely the best place to learn.

so far, there's a hack to map the search button to the camera app. it works great. and the same button snaps pics if you like.
I hate HTC sense, and every other android skin for that matter, although certain tidbits of TouchWiz are nice. You won't find sense on the g2x anytime soon, it's designed for HTC phones specifically, so porting it to a different brand would be very difficult and tedious.

As was said before, there are no custom ROMs out yet. Once they start coming in, I'd ask that question to the devs so they could potentially make that an option

thanks, gotta say, that I love the phone, of course coming from a virgin G1, who wouldn't. Looking forward to learning and making it even better.
Thanks for the feedback guys, I found what I was asking. Sorry if this thread was in the wrong location, I guess I'm just antsy to see some HTC Sense ROMS.

Nice job not being an ass *blinks*, I HAVE read the stickies, and spent the past hour or so looking through threads, just looking for a little clarification. I didn't realize that there were different ROM for different Phones. (Thought it might be like Windows to PCs, doesn't matter on the manufacturer of the PC, you can install windows on it as long as it meets bottom end reqs) If I had understood that, I wouldn't have asked the question.
And don't act like I'm not Tech savvy. I fix computers as a side job, I'm a developer and about to graduate with a Computer Science degree from a good nationally certified university. But I haven't worked in phone development at all, so this stuff is something I'm learning about. Again, I was just asking a few questions, don't get your panties in a wad.
You wont see a sense rom anytime soon, this isnt a htc device. Return the phone and wait for the htc sensation
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
sorry bout the "treating you like a newb" lol. i'm just a techie, no dev skills. you probably know more crap than me. i just see "2 posts" and questions about how to root as "oh no, this guy\girl is going to brick their phone!"lol
no offense intended. i just come off the wrong way sometimes.

Yea I don't think we'll see a Sense rom but anything can happen. Usually people with Sense and the Genius button go the other way (want a dedicated search and pure android)
The good thing is Sense can be replicated to a certain degree using themed launchers. There are even iPhone themed launchers. I use Launcher Pro because they have several special widgets that function and behave much like some of the Sense variants. The recent release of Launcher Pro has added themes to the mix, and are already lots of "Sense" themed Launcher Pro widgets and dock styles.
As far as the Genius button, I've never used it. I DO know that the Search key is awesome and allows searching in most apps. Also you should download "Google Voice Search" (not Google Voice, that is Visual Voicemail) and map it to a long press of the search button. Then you can just press and hold and say, "map pizza" or "call mom" or "text girlfriend hey I'm running late. see you in 30 minutes."
Hey!
Sense is not impossible, but you're probably not going to see it for a looong time if it does ever happen. HTC's software mantra is "lock-and key"-- only HTC branded phones have the correct permissions/drivers/guts in general to flash Sense ROMs. I've been waiting for one on the Vibrant since release. They got one booting, but it's far from stable and the whole project has been abandoned due to difficulty.
I second the "read, read, read" theme. Go to the vibrant or atrix or nexus s forum for example. (any comparable smart/superphone will do). Read THOSE stickies/posts/comments in alllll the sections. You have to get a feel for the lingo around here. This website comes complete with its own independent subculture. Which is unfortunately titled "geek".
I would say the most important part to learning however, is trying... and then totally ****ing it up and freaking out aaaand, since you don't want to have a $200 brick on your hands, you are forced by circumstance to learn :] As a word of encouragement, I've been from vibrant to nexus one and back and I find that even with all the ass-backwards stuff I did the first time I tried making/flashing zips/unlocking bootloaders/using fastboot for the first time etc., it's actually pretty damn hard to brick a phone beyond repair if you have half a brain.
CS major eh? Went to carnegie mellon myself. The place was full of them :] Being that the g2x has no ROMs, you're a cs major and you're most likely monetarily bound to an open source phone os for the next 2 years, why not download the android sdk and start cookin' up some ROMs yourself??? I've been told by people who do it that it's not that hard to learn. Carpe Diem my friend.
Any questions? PM me. The community around here used to be really really cool and helpful and informative. Now it kind of sucks :/
