[TESTING] ~ Stock 1gb vs. class6 8gb ~ JACxHEROSki, ZeroXD, xROM, CM - G1 Android Development

ATTN MODS: If this is the wrong forum to post this in let me know if you move it, thanks.
My thread here is purely for entertainment, not for a tutorial or serious info, not to be taken too serious, and not to be pissed on by the masses here on XDA. I respect other's work please respect my hobbies. Many thanks!
I am so bored on this rainy weekend and still can't commit to a build yet so I am testing this build from Twisted and the 1.6r2A build from JAC/CC on the stock 1gb card that came with the phone. Also for reference I am also trying the latest CM and JACx builds as well.
I am comparing my test results to times (fast/lag) and personal feelings using same phone set up, builds, and a 8gb class6 (0-7440/7440-7889/7889-7953) which I think I may have burned out a bit due to constant flashing and reformatting. (It's a Microcenter branded microSDHC that I picked up for like $15 so I could understand if it is starting to fail, but it could just be me ... but anyway ...
Setup:
G1 with last radio and recovery
fat32: 0-500 (500mb)
ext3: 500-952 (452mb)
linux-swap: 952-1016 (64mb)
Every setting: default from build
Will fully set it up all Google, Facebook & Twitter log-ins and shortest allowed refresh time intervals for each.
Homescreen set up, on Hero builds, in order (l-r): Calendar (month), SMS, Twitter, Flipclock (w/weather), Music (full), Footprints (w/6 location tags), Photo Album (40 5mp photos). No stocks - it's the weekend
I will not cross post this to any other thread as it really isn't needed to muck up other's work just to spread the insanity and let you all laugh at me. You have to come here to do that.
Will post updates later.

Casper/ZeroXD
just finished loading, pretty much took same time as 8gb.
Now for the set up.
-
That went smoothly. Let it sit for a bit before signing in, then after signing in I let it sit, did a reboot, now going to set up homescreens and settings then a reboot.
Ok, not bad so far, surprised that Hero runs this smoothly on a stock 1gb card.
Last two hours of use results:
2 second lag from 8gb/class6 reboot times - no biggie.
I have had HTC/spinning coming from doing things in email, weather, and peep.
*note: This is in no way a fault of the build as I never had these on a 8gb class6 card.
Browser is responsive and a tad of lag - no biggie
*note: using home WiFi with no compy traffic other than G1
Going to have some dinner and let the phone sit for a bit.
Future tests:
Install a bunch of apps (market/app manager/java)
Charge it up if needed.
Play/use a bunch of .apk/java games/applications
Let it go into sleep while charging overnight
Try it in the morning and see if it isn't as slow as molasses in January
*note: this has always been my issue. sluggish after heavy use/sleepcharge/morning check of email and text (that make sense?)

saved for results #2

Lol foo this is what I did
Exactly the same thing
But however everyone flamed me for doing so
My thread is currently called LSWSE or something like that
And it started with my opinions but now has none of my 2cents in it do to the constant people putting there 2cents
You have to remember every g1 is diffrent so your results differ from everyone elses
So good luck
Oh and here a tip try any memory card with a 96mb swap with swappiness set to 100 its amazing!!

I know some will flame and I am prepared for that. I am, however, not offering any instructions on setting up, tweaking, editing or cooking for that matter. But I do have a few great fish and pork recipes if ya'll want some - I used to be a "professional" chef. Back on track ... I am only offering my results to my little experiment and that's it.
I am looking for some of these results:
if my good card might be faulting?
if some builds can actually survive on a small low-class sd?
to see if I can get away from the f5 button (twitter, xda) for more than a pee or "grab a cup of coffee" break
if I can actually troubleshoot my phone's issues myself
That is all ... for now.

I'm interested to see your results. Do me a favor when you test xROM. Enable backing swap since you have a linux-swap partition. It didn't make it into the 1.4 build but the 1.5 build will have it enabled by default. I've been helping JAC and Manup with testing and supporting the ROM and JAC asked me to update the user.conf for 1.5.
Don't listen to the [ILTBMOTG]. That means "I like to bump my own thread guy". The "every G1 is different" argument is a weak way of him saying that if he is wrong you can't blame him. There are settings that will give good performance for the vast majority of the people out there. You are just trying to help figure out what those settings are. So don't listen to the flamers and haters. Just be prepared to explain what you did and why you did it and it should be cool. If you just say I tried this setting and it felt fast to me, there is no way to reproduce my resluts no one will take you seriously.

Ok, so, what? ... pm me, if you will, or post it here to help with the user config backing swap. I have yet to dive deep into that other than setting swappiness. I'm sure it's something easy I forgot after all of the thousands of posts I have read. If you'd like me test your 1.5 mod I will be glad to as well.

make sure your results are based mostly on scientific evidence.. i.e. numbers/benchmarks
personal opinions shouldn't be emphasized more than the scientific evidence since that is your personal opinion. in other words, others will think differently.
so yeah.. if you don't make your experiment scientific, there's gonna be a massive flame attackk on this thread.

You can use this one. It's basically the same as the 1.4 file with backing swap enabled. For 1.5 I'm still working on it. I want to have backing swap using swap file so that anyone can use it if they have an ext partition. But there appears to be a bug in compcache that isn't letting that happen. I opened an issue with the Compcache project.

What do you recommend for a benchmark application? Free ones only please. This is for fun/hobby not for financial loss/gain. Other than that really just using a stopwatch and a tally on paper (HTC/load screens, fc, ect.)
I have a feeling that some already are taking this too serious, coming from the one reply and the few pms I have gotten thus far. I am only doing this to see if I can get Hero to run to MY G1, to my expectations, with the stock sd card. So please chill before you start to flame me or I will have to ignore this thread and let it die. I am only posting for entertainment purposes. I am not posting this to apply for a doctorate or a tech field position.
I will be doing one favor to test something and that will be kept between the two of us. Knowing some of the ins and outs about tweaking and such I will be doing so when I find the need/desire and that will come later.

I use Benchmark Pi (which screws up your auto-rotate) and another app called benchmark.
I can get about 11.7 seconds on Benchmark Pi using xROM with my settings. I have some top50 times on the Benchmark Pi website. If you took out all of the duplicates from people who try to fill up the list with their name I probably have some in the top 15. And thats with all of my apps, widgets, etc loaded and running.
The other tool gives you a lot more data and is more scientific but it is harder to compare the values. I use them both for different things.

I'm always happy to help out. I've done a TON of benchmarking and testing on this stuff. I'm happy to share info with those who want it. I respect people trying to learn. People who pretend like they know what they are talking about and are really making stuff up are another story.

swap_free_notify can't be implemented until we hand merge the swapfile.c in /kernel/mm
sorry, I saw you posting on the compcache thread. hahaha

What? I'm lost. I'm not trying to implement swap free notify. I just want backing swap with swap file. Although it would be cool. Let me know if you want me to test it when you get it compiled.

No I know, this thread is just related to compcache, and I had just read your posts, and wanted to make the point - however ambiguous - that compcache isn't going to be as balls to the walls good until we can get the swap_free_notify correct. Something Cyanogen did.

Ok, that makes sense now. I think JAC is working on getting that working. So hopefully it won't be too long.

lot of us have flashed our devices at least 10 times in the last month. can you provide us more details about this rom, I'm getting tired of wm6 roms.
Thats the same problem with me!!
i think thats problem with everyone we need to settle down but how long ???? i hoop that someone has two device and will test it and provide us with more information
It's been a while i'm using mun-rus WM6 which it's rom build version is 17xxxx and it's fine, all of other ROMs are 15xxxx build and don't have much different in performance and types of bugs.
Can someone post the MS build number from the ROM?

It's the same as V1 to now, it's just improved with some reg fixes, other splash-screen and some progs.
It's not bad, loaded with stuff, ringtones, todaythemes etc.
It's a ROM for the lazy people, like me, although I'm using now the mUn's fixed version which is good..

Im still working on the ultimate fixed version of mUn's rom. Getting a little frustrating. LOL
Yeah that's funny, "tired of WM6 ROMs"
I flashed V.5 like 2 days ago and there's very little info on changes, i haven't seen any..beside Ferrari thing
what i noticed stuff like MMS composer, Voice dial (or voice commander) biuld's are different(older) comparing to mUn's
And there REALLY Should be some sort of guide/comparison for people who honour and appreciate work of all cookers out there, but ..just want to use SOLID Rom. knowing the differences, and having them presented clearly in a spreadsheet comparison would be most helpful.
Because there are guys wanting ALL The latest, and MOST STABLE.
At present WM6 have some serious flaws but only to people who happen to use WiFi, and MMS's(which is about 80% od wizard owners ; ) ) alot. So choosing right rom "distribution" now is next to IMPOSSIBLE, less choosing "stable" one.
Maybe "wiki" ought to serve this purpose, thus far we are stuck with "well known" cooker names producing unstable roms.
As much as i would like to thank all cookers, and community of Wizard experts, i am stuck with finding out more and more suprises after flashing each new rom distro.
Now Farias' suprised me by not being able to use contacts from sim card ..
Beside comparison of components numbers(like rom built date, prog. ver.) there should be shor explanation as of why cooker have chosen to include older, or newer version of specific soft., and next column : possible problems encountered by users..
I know that if i talk so much i should do it myself : ),
but short on time, and knowledge of figuring as to what format, type of database would be needed for "central Repository", or "future/bug" tracking wiki..
I think that it could help out rom cooks(ers: )) or us. When compiling they could make choice based on this centrall rep. of futures/problems of certain prog. versions: like battery plugin.. beta 2, or beta 3, what difference,
now it takes several hours to find out diffs., possible problems, and make concious choice: with least risk as to what WE want (in terms of functionality) and whether stability is at premium to us.
I don't agree
If you cannot do simple registry changes to show sim-contacts or cannot configure MMS you don't want to update your ROM.
Because if you cannot find the solution in this forum you probably cannot find the solution when you brick your phone.
I think this forum is for people with a bit more interest than the average phone-owner.
And in the end there is always somebody prepared to help.
I don't agree either.
It's not the forum's responsibility to rate and/or categorize each rom as it comes out. The threads for each rom or additional threads where users place their experiences with these roms.
Some chefs create basic stable roms, some stable with loads of ram, some super-fast with very little ram & etc. You choose the rom that works for you. Is there a best rom...NO; what counts is what you want and works for you.
If you just want what manufacturers give you, then you're in the wrong place.
Flashing these roms are not a right....it's a priveledge!!!
Ok guys,
Thanks, you've got some good points, i hope you can see where i am comming from..
1. it is fact that it IS A Privilege, and to that I AM gratefull that i have right to be using it.
2. i think there is no point in wasting of time researching over and over The SAME THINGS.., that i've seen for last year.
You(forum) can either give to users something more clear, or make them seek info over and over again, causing for stupid questions to arise, when someone may not have time to read through 64 pages of...\
and that's just one thread...
3.would it hurt to spend less than 5 hours doing research, and not finding what you originally intended, of ... oh well, "time is money, so don't waste it honey"
4. ok, so it is "simple" registry edit to fix sim card not being read by wm6 contacts app. It's just that it is basic funcionality, and when it comes to "names" it shouldn't happen, I believe that most of us would be glad to beta test them for our gurus' and reprizent' Xda-DEV cookers to the world RIGHT! Yo,
5. MMS .. well, when all config is right, and i have narrowed it down to radio rom version in "synchronisation error" deal, it's hard not to be average user, or even neglecting one, when You YOURSELF are unableto fix radio rom..
less even M$oft ain't touching many problems..
is WAITING, and Wa$ting of time a solution for you? ... digging through pile of wm6 roms to find one with LEAST Errors../ after which to be left out without basic functionality expected from phone..
i think comparisons and central database would make 4 all of us one nifty time/nerve saving future..
and just so it won't look like i am NOt appreciating my privileges i am contributing to community in a meanwhile(maybe before i cook my own../ or rather uncook, ever since heat processing makes it all tasteless and leaving us with all but one option to do: use spices, and salt..
I'd like to help to to make a RAW, FRESH ROM, call it Vanille, clean. Giving some constructive feedback, helping guys like mUn, and other nottoosmart guys alike..
( ;; ) )
well, cheers to all yall!
It seems this rom isnt as popular as the others.....its the nature of the beast with roms though.

Dude.....we're not supposed to have these roms.....!
This is why we have to go somewhere else to download them.
A comparison chart for something that we are not supposed to have....need I say more.
A comparison chart would be nice though but these roms don't work the same on every device.
Example: several roms were said to have incorrect values on the touch keyboard...I have never experienced this where others have.
Constructive feedback: IMO I beleive that's what everyone who installs a rom and discuss their experience is contributing to make the installed rom better. Some have mishaps and need help but a majority try to make the rom better. Not everyone can create cab files and discover what reg edit is best...those who can supply while those who can't, test.
If you start a comparison chart, I'll join in. PM me with what you got.
As far as making a clean rom....I'll help with that too.
Orwells WM6 is a clean version....that's where alot of these roms originate from.
You and I, we have our own opinions and are able to discuss them, thats what makes a forum.

Now that I've been on Faria's "the real thing" and mUn's, I don't think I could go back to any of the previous WM6 roms. MBE was decent after a lot of tweaking, but these two new ones are far above more complete and stable than anything I had previously.
I'll wait for the Faria vanilla and the nottoosmart stripped and fixed mUn ROM. I think both of these will be the standard for some time...
You know what i would say the same, as close to the top. What is so different from all the WM6 rom really!!! We are getting 20 million new ones everyday!!!
I am running faria's WM6 rom, and that is the only i have flashed, cus i dont trust any other!!! Looking at what people are saying i would say it was the best cus it does not have so many problems!!!
At it is so much fun to find solutions to problems, if we did not have that we would be so bored!!! Think of your self as beta testers for Mircosoft!!! Cus they dont do any work but the Roms are getting so much better!
I tested/flashed all ROMs uploaded on my Folder (IW25NT), so at least I know what I'm talking about.

So have I..........
And I'll keep on doing that, if I don't like I'll just restore the old setup.
What is annoying here lately, is that if someone posts a ROM, you'll either get all kinds of remarks how bad this ROM is (if it is not from 1 of our XDA Xprts), or remarks like before posted.
That one of the reason's why I stopped posting if I updated my Folder.
I'll continue to upload, just look ones in a while.
this rom is very fast, stable, low battery consumption!

Extreme Noobs Read Now - I Did It!!!

A BLOND FEMALE EXTREME NOOB DID IT!
My friends said I couldn’t do it. Mostly my male friends. All my girl friends supported me, but the general consensus was being female and being blond, I would have a hard time. LOL Well, I started by reading, reading, reading and READING on here for the past few weeks and finally got my ATT&T tilt a yesterday. I read and studied so much on this forum, I was practically bursting at the seams to put into practice what I had been studying night and day for the last 3 weeks or so. I also want to say THANKS THANKS THANKS to this forum and all who participate especially the moderators and senior members who read and wade with suspicious eyes (will this be a redundant post, they think), but who also assuage with empathetic concern for the worn out and battered, but otherwise persevered noob. I DID IT! I DID IT!
Like all mentors, they try to instill in all noobs like me a virtual sense of responsibility and accomplishment by not giving up information so readily and thus fostering a sense of, ‘pull yourself up by your own bootstraps’ kind of reasoning as they have been there and done that and you have not. Depending on your situation, this can be either good news or bad news. For those like me with a fundamental understanding and an ounce of technical aptitude, it is certainly good news. For others, it’s an emotional roller coaster ride and I feel sorry for all who go through such hell. KNOW YOUR BOUNDARIES AND LIMITATIONS! If you buy a phone you have no business owning because you think it’s cool looking only to find out that it’s really meant for the corporate power user variety and those who possess a higher than normal level of gadgetry prowess, what do you expect? Add to that , if you’re not technically savvy enough to operate it and install everything, what would be the point because eventually you would realize all you really have is an expensive phone and how you keep wishing you could get it to look like the ATT&T tilts you see on you tube.
I THINK I AM THE MOST EXTREME NOOB OUT THERE AND I AM FEMALE AND BLOND….TWO STEREOTYPES IN ONE!!
BUT…I was able to do it all on my own (Kicked boyfriend to the curb several weeks prior so didn’t want to ask him) with the exception of one thing which I have been working on and will continue to work on until all options are exhausted. Then I will post. I am 98% done and I chose Dutty’s 6.1. I really like it. I got through the white screen, made it through the compatible radio thingy, changed my military clock to regular (I’ve seen many posts on this), I installed he keyboard fix, enabled touchflo (I love it!) and so much more. I have one more pretty important thing I need to do, but as I said, I will keep reading before I post on here. Probably something I did.
I wanted to post on here so badly yesterday while I was installing just like everyone else does, but unlike those who do post, I decided to just keep at it and kept on reading and learning. I am soooo glad I did because now the whole install means more to me. I mean, I appreciate it more, the process. If you're just given something, how can you really respect or appreciate the accomplishment or end result?
THE ANSWERS ARE OUT THERE. Yes. It does take some due diligence on your part, but damn, you are getting this invaluable information for FREE. Free I tell you. What more do you want? All that is required is your time and willingness to learn. Has the fabric of society weakened so much that it has generated a new breed of lazy? Seriously? Could it be as simple as stupid is stupid or how about even willing stupidity? You either have the mental capacity to process and implement the information or you do not. It’s that simple. Period. I try to know the technical ins and outs of Quantum Mechanics which is why you would never see me lecturing on the theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics and their applied actions in the world of physics. I do know however, that riding a bike downhill will cause it to go faster and that each step I take forward puts me one step closer than the previous and pretty soon if I keep putting each foot in front of the other and walking, I’ll end up where I want to be. Having no or limited knowledge, I could end up in a rough area of town or because I have knowledge of the geographic area, it would likely be that shoe store who is having the amazing sale - Two different places and two different outcomes. One would lead to my own personal happiness (the shoe store sale) and the other to a potential statistic depending on the area of town you happen find yourself. You choose.
And to add a little further bit of my scintillating educational content to this subject, I’ll bring out the, "How to tell if something is complicated and over your head, even without understanding it, in case you can't be convinced by the fact that it actually IS complicated and over your head" kit. Opening the box, I take out two long, bare copper wires, and I put one in each of your hands. Onto my own hands I put thick rubber gloves. Now, I turn to you and demand, "Explain electricity", which is, you gotta admit, simple enough if you understand anything about electricity. But if you get it even partially wrong (with grammar and posture counting towards your total points!), I cruelly jam the other ends of those copper wires into the wall electrical outlet and let the local power company give you (zzzzt!) the lesson of your stupid life about how complicated things which are over your head and you know nothing about can be very frustrating and expensive for you! Not just with this phone, but in life. Remember that.
Finally, I want to say thank you again. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
I am a firm believer in determination. Sweat equity, pays dividends and the feeling of accomplishment waving over me at this moment dwarfs the learning curve and frustration involved with doing it on my own. It can be scary. Anything first new or foreign is scary to a person; A new job, a new relationship, etc. It is only once you become proficient that you wonder how you were ever afraid of falling off in the first place.
Just some good food for thought!
~GWEN

**Try flashing the rom via microSD - copy RUU_signed to root of your microSD and rename "KAISIMG.nbh" Reboot, whilst pressing power and camera buttons to go into bootloader and it'll list what is contained in the KAISIMG.nbh (i.e. Radio, Splash, OS) Press "power" to start process. Once complete soft-reset (Do a hard-reset to clear any little niggles) Done. I found this out thanks to vip_snoopy. This way you iliminate the need to use the update utility. This is the only way I flash now (Splash screens, radios and imgs), You can store several roms all with the name (KAISIMG.nbh) on your storage card (in different folders/perhaps using descriptions) then use file manager to copy the one I want to root of microSD and then flash on the go!! **Best to make sure battery is over 50% though.**
Hope this helps in letting you flash Dutty's Rom, worked for me. Thanks and credit to vip_snoopy.

Cool and smart (can tell by the fact that you wanted to and did it by yourself and that you can write correct and complete sentences)? Gwen, you're going to be in trouble with all the hounds around here
Just watch out. It's an addiction. I went from where you are to being obsessed with cooking my own "perfect" ROM in just a couple of months.
Welcome and congrats.
Congrats... Anything is possible with a little peepee .......No, idiot, Patience & persistence!
You're an asset to the forum because you read, listened, & learned. According to some of the posts I see (& some of the bricks I help save) this concept i consider common sense, apparently is not so...
BTW, if someone like Hillary can run for Pres., I certainly see no issue with flashing. In fact one of the best s/w engineers (mostly reverse) I know is a woman.

In recent months, I've wondered how many females frequent this forum. Mostly because there have been lots of assumptions in the text of the messages that have been assuming everyone here is male. Nothing bad, just a simple use of the word "he" when referring to someone when there is no indication of gender to ensure accuracy.
I thought about it a bit more a few times wondering how this type of phone would appeal to females. So, I wonder if this post is authentic? Doesn't really matter to me, but it may be a little embarrassing for the dudes who have used words like "love" and "marry" in thier responses.
I few things seem a bit off....
Lots of text off subject, perhaps to support the stereotype for the claim of being blonde.
Lots of text in general, perhaps to support the stereotype of being female.
Most strange is the use of the word "female", when in most cases the use of this word seems so clinical to woman or girls.
Oh, wait! the name "skunkygwen" is so, like - not nice, I don't get it.
Anyway, just still wondering...

Awww. Thanks Guys. I feel really good. I feel like I know P1Tater and Jarek91 as well as a few others just by matter of happenstance. I love some of the posts and the creative ways this forum alerts those who post to read first before asking, For instance, Jarek’s “Hey Flame Bait, read this” or the link to the ninja accessories and throwing stars. It made my searches both comedic and tolerable and kept me going knowing I would run across similarly arranged responses from Senior Members to Noobs. Jarek’s form of sarcasm which resides in countless, countless threads was refreshing and kept me laughing. From other colorful responses from senior members like P1Tater to straight shooters like _Alex_ , they make these intense searches you have to do and all the information intake bearable and if you truly do your homework and I mean truly put in the time which is mandatory, any answer you haven’t found in these forums will be answered when you post it or at least a reference to it that you may have missed. It is only the posts which these moderators and senior members have seen time after time after time, that they do not respond and when they do respond, it is in an aggressive teaching kind of way. It’s so obvious. They’re not being rude. They look at these posts EVERYDAY! How many times would you need to read something knowing that it’s been asked and answered a thousand times before? More importantly, with your limited time schedule coupled with volunteering on these boards, how long would it take you to become callus to pretty much anyone who asked such questions without even doing the most basic research yourself. Please tell me these same people are not voters.

P.S. I happen to like Jarek’s avatar. I’ll have to get me one too.

I was going to wait to post this, but I have been looking for the fix to get videos to work on the internet. Now before you get all disappointed and think that I am not practicing what I preach, it should be noted that I have read every available post that I know of on this subject on this forum and still cannot get it to work. It did initially work with the flashed Dutty’s 6.1 ROM.
After initially flashing Dutty’s 6.1 (I did the hard reset and restored after the flash at the alignment screen), I installed the TCP and Flashvideo next, set up my other settings and everything worked fine. No problem. Youtube videos – yep. CNN videos – A-Okay ANY INTERNET VIDEO – Good to Go - Then I got all confident like and with the feeling of Girl Power coursing through my veins, I pushed ever more forward and started messing with other customizable settings and such. You know how it is, right? LOL At one point I had my voltage meter in the upper part of the screen, my processor speed, the tray launch, etc. LOL I went so far that the little ‘ActionScreen’ at the bottom left said something like windows/ht… and that was it. It still functioned properly, but I got to the point where I needed to do a hard reset which I did and then I installed everything again from that point (TCP, Video, keyboard fix, etc). Ever since I got confident and messed with settings, I now cannot get youtube video (I had it before). I cannot get any video on the internet for that matter whereas before I started messing around, I could. I cannot get it from CNN, CBS, Youtube, etc. I have read the posts BELIEVE ME I HAVE.
Do you think re-flashing Dutty’s 6.1 ROM from my computer would fix this error or should I go back to the OEM ATT first and then back to Dutty’s 6.1 again? Do you think it could be a simple setting in my connections? I checked them and they looked okay. I mean ,the video worked fine yesterday. I thought it was maybe due to the fact that I thought I had customized the phone to the point of hard resetting which I did. Maybe that has something to do with it?
I feel dirty for even posting this questions and am disappointed at myself if the solution lies within these forums and if it is a thread I have not seen yet because I have been looking!!!
Thanks,
~Gwen
Someone did something Not sure what they did but it was something like I said right? All the men on here are pervs 75% of the comments back to the OP had some mention of "stereotyping" knock it!
install Skunkworks Flash video bundle then TCMP player should be fine. Or just use coreplayer 1.2

I wanted to take a moment to respond to Toms insinuation that I may be of the opposite gender. Not because I have to. I really don't care, but I’ll do it anyway just to establish the pecking order since this is my first real post, albeit a brief response. Point number one, why would I post on here NOW after the fact. I already have what I need. I got it myself -98% of it anyway. I never posted on here and the hard part is over for me. If I wanted to create a ruse, it would have been for the same reasons it's already been done on here...for the purposes of gaining technical support by taking advantage of the fact that most guys are horn dogs. And on this forum as well as evidenced by so, so many of these ‘gender bender’ types of posts. I chose to stay away from posting because I am an empowered woman and I do have pride and confidence in myself and my actions.
I am going to digress now. One thing you do not know about me (Why would you) is I can get kind of hot headed at times when someone makes a judgment based on a single observation. Apparently, you do not live your life as I do....probabilistically.
I still love you Toms –

a new keyboard

i was looking though the touch wiz sys dump and i liked the keyboard so i put it in an update format. Just flash it, i gurantee youll like it. If not just remove it. I included the lwp as well that were posted earlier the lwp from it too, they work great on the phone though, I need someone to test it for me, cus swype is a pain to remove w/o wiping, and i already have all this on my phone. you just need to flash it like a rom. It contains 4lwp and 1keyboard app and their libs...dl the new lwp and kb HERE
Any chance of just getting the KB?

no time, sorry. you can rip them out and just install though, just make sure you take the lib files that go with them in your libs folder and the apps in your sys/app or data/app folder.

thanks for testing it and the quick feedback. i stated that it included the lwps in the op. they are from the new touch wiz dump. Ill check to see whats up with swype, just figured id throw it out there for those that didnt see this stuff yet....also, did you remove your old swype completely? or did you not have it? cus its VERY hard to get rid of.....just wondering so i can fix if something wrong.

sorry about that, and thanks.ok, soon as i get home ill post a link to a really sweet htc skinned swype mod. i use the red one in my newest rom, but the green one is slick too. im going to hang out for a little bit, when i get back ill put it up, and just take it out of the other one and ill mess with it, since its a full version.....
Let me see if I can accurately decipher this thread:
You saw something you liked, but didn't test it because its too much work to uninstall what you already have but that's ok because you already have it installed so you need someone else to take a blind leap of faith and install something you "gurantee" they'll like but if they don't that's ok too because they can just uninstall it (which really they can't do easily) but if you want to see what it is in the first place tough luck because you're out and about and have no time to post a screenshot for your own quasi-release?
If I were Canadian, I'd add "Eh?" at the end of that.
I strongly recommend that if you want to be taken seriously, you put a little more thought into your release posts. I applaud you for taking the time to share with the community, but frivolous posting of root-level patches without some form of quality control on your part could lead to a dangerous precedent of buggy and/or malicious code being introduced in the same channels.
I know you probably have the communities best interest at heart, but holding yourself to a higher standard keeps the bar high for the rest of those issuing releases to demonstrate an aptitude for solid documentation so people know precisely what to expect from dedicated contributors.
Good Luck!

If you took a moment to actually absorb what I posted, you would recognize I did not besmirch your contributions, but was offering a point of constructive criticism.
Regardless of the quality or lack thereof of your "releases", your posts are plagued with you getting into flame wars with people because you feel like you have to defend yourself against any form of critique you don't agree with.
But hey, if you have five people who think your work is on par with some of those that I have donated to, by all means cater to that denominator. I'll gladly keep my feedback to myself and save it for someone who can handle dialogue with a little more class.

[REQ] Input for new video. Tell me what YOU want!

Greetings All!
With the onslaught of questions and concerns that have been directed at me, I have decided that there may be a few items that would need to be addressed in an additional video. I am looking for input from you, my viewers, as to what you would like me to cover.
I have already decided that I am going to go over the installation of khalpower's new v2 and I will step through the usability and features of it. I will also discuss the differences between the versions out there, and what patches are. I can discuss the differences between apps2sd, link2sd, and all of that stuff. I will also probably give me own opinions as to what everyone SHOULD be running, and what I deem to be the perfect setup.
I encourage you to speak up in this thread and tell me what you need from a new video. Obviously, YouTube restricts me to 15 minutes per video, so if I need to, I can always do more than one. I was originally going to make a new video tomorrow, but I decided that I would give the XDA community a chance to give me your thoughts first.
Try to be coherent, and if something has already been requested, request it anyway. The more requests for a specific subject, the more likely it will be covered.
With your input, and my mad editing skills, I hope to help as many of you as possible with this new series of video.
Let the requests begin!

Setup of apps2ext or link2sd
pleeease explain the setup for the khalpowers apps2sd, there have been so many versions and setups directions. The choices don't help either, this will hopefully make everything clear for us noobs! your 8 min tutorial and instructions helped me start out. So thanks again for all your hard work sometimes we forget how hard it is to figure things out the first time, now looking back, it seems to be a breeze.

Yeah, to this day, I'm still on stock 2.1 with App2SD. It's more of a MOTOROLA Y U LOCK BOOTLOADER issue for me.
Links2sd
your videos have been great.
A video walkthrough of how to activate links2sd would be superb. - conflicting information out there has me confused
....and like you said the differences between links2sd, apps2sd.. apps2ext etc... like which one is faster/ your recommendations
this may not be relevant or urgent but if it is...(if this still hasn't been fixed yet) sorting out the keyboard dictionary, my english version 2.1 one was brilliant but since 2.2 versions auto-correct has been hopeless
Much appreciated. your first videos helped a noob (me) improve his phone
Right now I'd like to see a clear tutorial for installing Khal's ROM (whatever version is current) and his honeycomb theme for that, since those are the things I'd like to do (though I may have already figured it out by the time you get the vid up) ).
EDIT:
Oh and if you could clear up if ROMs like Khal's can be installed over things like Mioze7ae's patch (currently running Dexter's 1.3 with Mioze7ae's patch .2) with no issue, that would be fantastic.
Thanks, it's great to have people like you on this forum.
How I do apply theme? I'm a bit confused. That video would be nice for beginners for me. Cheers!
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
I also vote for good apps2sd instructions!
side note: what is the best partition software for a mac?
would be nice to have good video explanation setup-Dexter-kal rom, patch, it's not always clear to everyone and everything .... thanks a video would be very appreciated.....sorry translation
Putting Things back as Was ..
REV -
I would like to see a video where we can back up a phone with all its content before say applying a new custom ROM. Then if the ROM doesnt work we can put the phone back to as it was. THis may then give a bit of security to people wishing to flash about etc knowing that they can put all back as was.
thanks

i just realised your previous videos on using gparted etc has enough information for those wanting to use link2sd on khals Rom. So all one would have to do is follow those directions- add a 'Link2sd' folder instead of an 'apps' folder and flash the Rom like in your dexter videos.
Tell me if i'm missing any key steps so i'l wait for your video!

I just wanted to thank you, first of all. Your videos have been great for me since I am also a Cincinnati Bell customer. I loved my first smartphone (BB Curve) for the email and flexibility it gave me as a small business owner, but Cincy Bell was no longer offering a large screen BB and I was having trouble reading email and web on the small Curve screen, so I got the XT720. Once I realized the memory limitations of Eclair, I set out to find a way to get Froyo on my XT720 and your vids were perfect for me.

This is what I want to see, but if there is a way for you discuss the best setup for performance, battery saving, and a good mixture, I'm up for that too since it seems to be the one common downfall for just about every large screen smartphone owner.

It seems that in some alternate reality it is acceptable to assume that "in your spare time" means cancel all of your plans and get used to fluorescent lighting because daylight is just the glare on your computer screen. Either way, I am downloading some 2 gigs of random ICS stuff and finally received my replacement Macbook, so between projects I will try to get something moving on this.

I guess if you didn't see the previous thread, which was more or less a rick-roll youtube video that said it isn't possible to get anything running, then an understandable first reaction is to make rude comments...
But if you read the thread you are responding to, you would have seen that on the Nexus it is a working build, capable of being used as more than just a proof-of-concept. Then again, I don't expect people to read these days because they are too busy writing...

Best leave the developing to the developers and stop back when there is something to load up and complain about
So getting an SDK port working on a Nexus S is the same as getting it to run on the ThunderBolt?
I'm not saying it isn't possible though I highly doubt it will work. I'm saying don't call it the "Real Deal".

This is real ICS development, and not a prank so it is as the title says "ICS Development (Real Deal)"
And no, getting a port working on the Nexus S is not the same as getting it to work on the Thunderbolt, which is why there isn't a file in that first post yet. I think you are assuming that the only thing available is the SDK image, though, when the full system dump is out there also.
My previous statement still stands.. Why don't you go shake down some kids for their script source, and come back when there is something here to test.

Posting threads with no content seems ridiculous. Why not work on the port rather than type sentence after sentence of nonsense in here. Just saying.

You do know downloads, packing, transferring, uploading, etc do run in the background right? I remember back when threads like this rallied up support and assistance instead of whatever you call what you're doing... For the record I am waiting on a data wipe and a lot of stuff is still installing since the computer only came yesterday.
I can just toss up every little edit I test and brick phones all day long, or I can document the process and release when it hits milestones. That way I can catch input along the way and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Just swapped the boot on the posted Nexus build, changed over all the apn info, and added in all the keylayout and hardware files. Going through and finding everything that needs to be swapped for a straight port, then if it runs I will post up the progress.

Whether you get anywhere or not, good luck
Nothing wrong with doing something just for the challenge of having said you did it and the experience.
I am glad to see someone putting some real effort into getting an ICS port going. And appreciate you posting your progress here along the way. I'm interested in seeing how you get where you get.
Good Luck
As already mentioned, this thread is for relevant discussion of the upcoming port.
If you have nothing constructive to contribute then keep it to yourself.
No *****ing and whining about the probable lack of functionality, no pestering for ETA's and no petty personal playground nonsense.
No more warningsIf this goes off topic again then there will be repercussions.

Thanks. The good news is that I have a shopping list of what has been changed to go from sdk to working port. The bad news is that I also have a project due Thursday that I need to actually spend some time with.
For anyone with the sdk build, make sure before even trying to run it that you replace all the /system/bin files that just say toolbox with real files or set up symlinks for them. Busybox also needs to be added/replaced in /system/xbin
This will get that version to where you can run logcat and see the EGL errors, but it will also be in a condition to start tweaking files to get the touchscreen running.

I can't waaaaiiiitttt!!
Take as much time as you need! Your life is more important than this.
I am uploading what I have, but not because it is a huge step forward. I fixed all the commands and added the files that should fix the touchscreen, but didn't on this device.
This is still a step forward from the base build we currently have. At least typing a command no longer results in "toolbox" being displayed instead of results. I reverted everything I tested to make sure the only test changes were absolutely necessary to provide a solid base. I will post a link as soon as it is up.
