[REQ] Input for new video. Tell me what YOU want! - Milestone XT720 General

Greetings All!
With the onslaught of questions and concerns that have been directed at me, I have decided that there may be a few items that would need to be addressed in an additional video. I am looking for input from you, my viewers, as to what you would like me to cover.
I have already decided that I am going to go over the installation of khalpower's new v2 and I will step through the usability and features of it. I will also discuss the differences between the versions out there, and what patches are. I can discuss the differences between apps2sd, link2sd, and all of that stuff. I will also probably give me own opinions as to what everyone SHOULD be running, and what I deem to be the perfect setup.
I encourage you to speak up in this thread and tell me what you need from a new video. Obviously, YouTube restricts me to 15 minutes per video, so if I need to, I can always do more than one. I was originally going to make a new video tomorrow, but I decided that I would give the XDA community a chance to give me your thoughts first.
Try to be coherent, and if something has already been requested, request it anyway. The more requests for a specific subject, the more likely it will be covered.
With your input, and my mad editing skills, I hope to help as many of you as possible with this new series of video.
Let the requests begin!

Setup of apps2ext or link2sd
pleeease explain the setup for the khalpowers apps2sd, there have been so many versions and setups directions. The choices don't help either, this will hopefully make everything clear for us noobs! your 8 min tutorial and instructions helped me start out. So thanks again for all your hard work sometimes we forget how hard it is to figure things out the first time, now looking back, it seems to be a breeze.

Yeah, to this day, I'm still on stock 2.1 with App2SD. It's more of a MOTOROLA Y U LOCK BOOTLOADER issue for me.

Links2sd
your videos have been great.
A video walkthrough of how to activate links2sd would be superb. - conflicting information out there has me confused
....and like you said the differences between links2sd, apps2sd.. apps2ext etc... like which one is faster/ your recommendations
this may not be relevant or urgent but if it is...(if this still hasn't been fixed yet) sorting out the keyboard dictionary, my english version 2.1 one was brilliant but since 2.2 versions auto-correct has been hopeless
Much appreciated. your first videos helped a noob (me) improve his phone

Right now I'd like to see a clear tutorial for installing Khal's ROM (whatever version is current) and his honeycomb theme for that, since those are the things I'd like to do (though I may have already figured it out by the time you get the vid up) ).
EDIT:
Oh and if you could clear up if ROMs like Khal's can be installed over things like Mioze7ae's patch (currently running Dexter's 1.3 with Mioze7ae's patch .2) with no issue, that would be fantastic.
Thanks, it's great to have people like you on this forum.

How I do apply theme? I'm a bit confused. That video would be nice for beginners for me. Cheers!
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App

I also vote for good apps2sd instructions!
side note: what is the best partition software for a mac?

would be nice to have good video explanation setup-Dexter-kal rom, patch, it's not always clear to everyone and everything .... thanks a video would be very appreciated.....sorry translation

Putting Things back as Was ..
REV -
I would like to see a video where we can back up a phone with all its content before say applying a new custom ROM. Then if the ROM doesnt work we can put the phone back to as it was. THis may then give a bit of security to people wishing to flash about etc knowing that they can put all back as was.
thanks

i just realised your previous videos on using gparted etc has enough information for those wanting to use link2sd on khals Rom. So all one would have to do is follow those directions- add a 'Link2sd' folder instead of an 'apps' folder and flash the Rom like in your dexter videos.
Tell me if i'm missing any key steps so i'l wait for your video!
cheers

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that.

I think a video on installing open androidiani flashing a ROM and an update... just an idea.. seems to be the current newbi question...

It doesn't look like there are very many requests here.
I've just gotten back from holiday and will be creating new videos this week.
Stay tuned.

backing up using nandroid and how to reboot into nandroid when booting from a power off situation, such as a crash.

I just wanted to thank you, first of all. Your videos have been great for me since I am also a Cincinnati Bell customer. I loved my first smartphone (BB Curve) for the email and flexibility it gave me as a small business owner, but Cincy Bell was no longer offering a large screen BB and I was having trouble reading email and web on the small Curve screen, so I got the XT720. Once I realized the memory limitations of Eclair, I set out to find a way to get Froyo on my XT720 and your vids were perfect for me.

This is what I want to see, but if there is a way for you discuss the best setup for performance, battery saving, and a good mixture, I'm up for that too since it seems to be the one common downfall for just about every large screen smartphone owner.

Good to hear. I was actually going to try and figure out how to do it, but I prefer being lazy and watching your walkthroughs so I decided to wait (+it does have the added benefit of making my phone less likely to explode).

a new keyboard

i was looking though the touch wiz sys dump and i liked the keyboard so i put it in an update format. Just flash it, i gurantee youll like it. If not just remove it. I included the lwp as well that were posted earlier the lwp from it too, they work great on the phone though, I need someone to test it for me, cus swype is a pain to remove w/o wiping, and i already have all this on my phone. you just need to flash it like a rom. It contains 4lwp and 1keyboard app and their libs...dl the new lwp and kb HERE
Any chance of just getting the KB?

no time, sorry. you can rip them out and just install though, just make sure you take the lib files that go with them in your libs folder and the apps in your sys/app or data/app folder.

Ill check to see whats up with swype, just figured id throw it out there for those that didnt see this stuff yet....also, did you remove your old swype completely? or did you not have it? cus its VERY hard to get rid of.....just wondering so i can fix if something wrong.

sorry about that, and thanks.ok, soon as i get home ill post a link to a really sweet htc skinned swype mod. i use the red one in my newest rom, but the green one is slick too. im going to hang out for a little bit, when i get back ill put it up, and just take it out of the other one and ill mess with it, since its a full version.....
Let me see if I can accurately decipher this thread:
You saw something you liked, but didn't test it because its too much work to uninstall what you already have but that's ok because you already have it installed so you need someone else to take a blind leap of faith and install something you "gurantee" they'll like but if they don't that's ok too because they can just uninstall it (which really they can't do easily) but if you want to see what it is in the first place tough luck because you're out and about and have no time to post a screenshot for your own quasi-release?
If I were Canadian, I'd add "Eh?" at the end of that.
I strongly recommend that if you want to be taken seriously, you put a little more thought into your release posts. I applaud you for taking the time to share with the community, but frivolous posting of root-level patches without some form of quality control on your part could lead to a dangerous precedent of buggy and/or malicious code being introduced in the same channels.
I know you probably have the communities best interest at heart, but holding yourself to a higher standard keeps the bar high for the rest of those issuing releases to demonstrate an aptitude for solid documentation so people know precisely what to expect from dedicated contributors.
Good Luck!

Thanks for this magnusragnarok! Any chance you could try to get an update zip with the t9 ime in the i9000 dump? I'm curious to see how the Sammy virtual keyboard looks. Also, that guy apparently doesn't realize how big of an asset you've been to the hero and evo communities. Keep up the great work!

SERIOUSLY, why whould you make it 2wice as bad by requoting the entire post in ITALICS? GOOD JOB. PLEASE try to remain on topic, this is a thread about a kb and the touch wiz lwp i put together in one update for everyones convenience, not about my choice of font and color. If you took a moment to actually absorb what I posted, you would recognize I did not besmirch your contributions, but was offering a point of constructive criticism.
Regardless of the quality or lack thereof of your "releases", your posts are plagued with you getting into flame wars with people because you feel like you have to defend yourself against any form of critique you don't agree with.
But hey, if you have five people who think your work is on par with some of those that I have donated to, by all means cater to that denominator. I'll gladly keep my feedback to myself and save it for someone who can handle dialogue with a little more class.

A suggestion.

Hello everyone. I want to thank you all for this site, I have learned a great deal here and appreciate all your efforts. I have a question that many new comers have asked and they have been told to go read, so thats what I will do. I want you to know tho that its very hard when you have a baby, and very little time. I also want you to know that the only times I am really productive getting somewhere with my phone is staying up till like 4 am because everyone is asleep and I have the time needed to dedicate to all this reading, trying and learning.
I am not complaining, in fact I am grateful because I am getting somewhere thanks to your help, which has been more valuable than all the help Samsung and Rogers have given me washing their hands clean and leaving me with a defective phone. My problem has not been solved just yet, but I think a 2.2.1 rom will fix my problem. Ill keep reading and trying, ill get there.
I suggest you guys have a wikipage with a table with all the roms, what versions of android they are, what kernels, modems, etc they work with ( or not work with ), bugs, features, something all in 1 page for easy access. This would make it easier for people to access information. The easier it is the more people will use them and come here, the more ideas you will have, the more testers, its a win win situation!
I have been to the pages for all the roms, some of them tell you the bluetooh voice dialing is not working, most don't, id have to go looking for my answer. I have learned that for instance it seems people do not have an issue with it with froyo 2.2.1 but again, some roms tell you in the main page its 2.2.1, others don't.
I can't grasp all the information staying up at night till 4 am. Its the only time I have. I almost had a heat attack when I thought I bricked my phone, I can't afford another one. If all the important information is right there on 1 page, like links to the usb drivers, tools, roms, kernels, everything. Have the instructions to flash. Have a table with all the roms, their versions, what versions of kernels, modems, etc, they do ( or dont ) work with. maybe even some of the table cells are clickable, for instance bugs, click on it and a window pops up with a list of them.
I know all this information is in here somewhere. Thanks to everyone for it, but it needs to be on 1 page. Please make it easier for people who are new to this. You will benefit as well as them. Looking forward to being able to use voice dialing. I think it will be working by tomorrow or after tomorrow thanks to you guys. I could have done it in a day if all the information was right there .
Thanks for reading.
Try searching.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I897
I have that bookmarked. It is also a sticky in this section.
But it doesn't say for instance which ones are 2.2.1, or which ones have the terrible voice dialing over bluetooth..
I do search and end up with over 15 tabs...
I am getting by, I am just saying it could be organized better for everyones benefit. It could be made so someone who has never done this before can get it done in a couple of hours if even, without keeping asking you the same questions here. I understand why people keep asking to recommend a ROM. It is not they they do not search, not all of them anyway. Things can be better organized.
I hear what you're saying, I think it's just that within the course of a month, about 20 ROM's have been released, if not more. And no one has had time to update the wiki.

+1
The thing is that its not just the number of ROMs, but also the number of versions that are released. It would be a real pain and an added overhead for anyone maintaining it.
Also note that most devs are working too, and doing this in their free time. The little time they have to spare is taken up for making improvements. But they do release changelogs to look into.
If anyone has time, I would suggest they take it up to create a wiki and maintain it, rather than relying or asking the devs to do it.
Try capfaq.com it has a ROM table section, and I've used it alot.
Same issues with being 100% up to date, but it's the best Rom table format I've seen.

Thanks guys, I will check that table out tomorrow.
It'd be nice if there was a modem chart as well. I know there are modems in the modem thread
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272
...but near as I can tell it's not up to date, or at least the first page is not up to date (ie base Cognition runs on JL1 and Andromeda on JL2, but aren't on the first page).
If anyone knows a good and current modem reference guide, please let me know.
I can't complain too much because obviously things change all the time and it's a PITA to constantly update info...I'd volunteer but I got a 2 year old and baby 2.0 due in April.

How? What happened?
I have no Idea what I did wrong, my goal before I started was getting voice dial over bluetooth working for me, its essential to me. It started with trying to install paragon, as per http://www.capfaq.com/w/ROM_Table mentioned above.
I was stock rogers 2.2 so I wiped it clean, and tried the update thing, it didnt work. The only step I skipped was flash to stock and the master clear since it was 2.2 recently and I did the factory wipe. It did not work but I did not brick anything just yet. I figured most people tell you to flash with the one click odin which puts stock at&t on it. I did that and the phone stopped going into download and recovery, it did not stop completely i have gone into download and recovery a few times after that but it was a battle with my phone, since it was booting, I used adt instead which worked like a charm. at&t rom was not happy on my phone, it was going into at&t reboot loops where it would just reboot the bios over and over. after trying and trying it would boot android, i was trying to fix it but each time it restarted the reboot loop would kick off. I could not go to recovery or download mode till i finally got back into the OS and used adt to tell it to go to download mode where i reflashed my stock rogers.
My phone now had at&t logo on boot before rogers, which is not that bad but i had read you can get rid of it, i tried going into download mode with the buttons but didnt try too hard, adt was easier.
I was following these instructions :
http://www.mmacleod.ca/blog/2011/01/removing-the-att-boot-screen-from-a-samsung-captivate/
it wanted me to use odin to flash a file. I used my oden 1.3, i think he says oden 1.0, I didn't think it would make a difference.
Odin started to flash and said fail. I got the screen with "android ! computer", I have been there before when I first ever tried using odin and had to fight with my phone to get to download mode at the time ( this was before at&t ever came close to the phone, i never used odin before so i probably had trouble because of inexperience ).
anyway, this time no matter what I do I cannot go to download mode, I plan on making a jig today if i find someone who sells resistors in this little town.
any help would be appreciated. I dont want to put any more roms on my phone, i just want it to work. I am worried. Ill wait till samsung releases 2.2.1 I just want my phone back to the way it was when I bought it
As the person who write most of the documentation for Team Komin (the developers who make Andromeda), I would say this would be an immense pain. copying all of our information from the website, formatting it into wiki form and then posting it would be very time consuming.

True, but once done, it would be much easier to maintain and navigate. There is going to be a lot of crossposting and people asking for insight and advice.
I'm sure we all understand the search feature in the forum, but to be honest things change topic within a thread, and where someone asks a question that is somewhat unrelated and gets a very good answer, it is not always apparent by poking through page after page of posts to find that nugget of gold. I mean, searching for 'kernel' will give literally thousands of hits. A wiki would be much better in terms of 1. Where you are starting out from 2. what you need to do what you want 3. where to find these things, and 4. maintaining updates and version revisions.
I really appreciate all the work people do here, and I have had to find everything I wanted to know the 'hard' way, but as Android grows in popularity and market percentage, more and more people are going to come here looking for this information. Pobably better to do it sooner than later.

I tried running the Froyo version on my N1 anyway, but it Force Closes as soon as trying to open the app.
Any ETA on a Gingerbread version? I'm quite eager to try your product!
They said a GB compatible copy will be along soon.
I really wanted to try it but it force closes on me.
Always wanted to tryout multi-touch...

Hope you are enjoying flying the web with PadKite, the first multitouch mobile mouse.
Yes, it is a web browser. It includes extended Webkit libraries that makes it heavier. Hopefully these will be able to be submitted into the WebKit build on the near future. The application does not include Flash for the moment and does not run on top of the OS or other applications. As a new concept we are starting small running as a stand alone browser aiming to grow bigger. We are braking the mold on multi-touch interaction and that has to be gradually. As you might have notized it has a lot of potential.
Currently we are making adjustments in order to run in all versions. This requires a lot of effort however it will allow PadKite to run in almost all devices. If you want to run on a Gingerbread version, let us know via our contact form and it will be delivered shortly.
Some users have experienced problems with Android versions of FRG83D and FRG83. We are currently looking into this and we will come up with a solution shortly. If you have problems, running PadKite on your Froyo, please contact us via our contact form too or join our beta program. We need as much information as possible from our users (especially your Logcat). Also, take part in our beta program and you will be the first to get updated on new versions.
Please follow PadKite on Twitter and get up-to-date info on new builds at padkite account.
Thanks for helping us make PadKite even better!
Cheers,
Jose Vigil
RoamTouch CEO
looks great, I'm looking forward to trying it when its available for Gingerbread.. also it would be great to get the adobe flash integration working.. But looks like a great concept, original and useful.
Bumping this, as it is a clear winner as a productivity tool, but so few people seem to have heard about it. I'm a huge fan, and that's based on only having seen the videos, as well as it partially working on a mate's Xperia X8 (the X8 lacks multi-touch, so is unable to take advantage of some of the more powerful features, such as text-selection via second finger-rotation, although as a pointer it works perfectly)!
Hoping they get back to me soon with an offer into the Beta program, as I'm dying to get this app! Also hoping they take it further, and fast, so that it becomes an integral Android feature, rather than just a browser tool.
This is a game-changer, people, so get on board and bring your family and friends!

Don't hold your breath on this one buddy. I gave up. I recieved 6 APK's from the dev...not one of the worked. FC every time. I was working on it with him for quite a time, and it never worked. Seems to only work on one or two phones.
Won't be holding my breath, but certainly won't be abandoning hope! If those who have been able to get it working could post details of which model phones they have, as well as the models that haven't worked, plus current Android version, the devs might be able to narrow the issue down. Not sure if I'm able to start a new thread, being a noob and all, so if people could list the following in this thread it would go a long way towards getting us what we want:
Phone model
Android version (stock or rooted)
Whether it worked or not, and if not, at what stage it crashed, plus any further comments.

Send the dev any info you like...it didn't help. I was in contact with him for a few weeks. I don't 'abandon hope' unless it's time to abandon it. After emailing back and forth for a few weeks, then not hearing back from the dev for the last 3 months, I would say it's abandonment time.
You do what you want, and I'll do what I want, and never the twain shall meet.

Well thank you SO much for your diplomacy. You must be new here. I was just sharing my findings. Did you even notice the last post before you necro'd this crappy app...was from Feb??? There is a reason for that.
Good luck with getting things figured out around here.
Crappy app, perhaps, but only in terms of its failing to work for most who've tried it thus far. The idea itself is a brilliant one, I believe!

95% of brilliance is implementation.
I can think of a bazillion good app ideas...but making them actually work is where the real skill is. I am upset with padkite because they seem to have spent all this time on making a website and sharing the idea...then they spent 2 minutes actually BUILDING the app...and it's garbage.
This looks fantastic. I downloaded and try to join beta program, to improve your software.
And 14mb is nothing, nowdays phones have 1gb or so of ROM space. Or move it to SD card.

Are you suggesting that they faked the videos of padKite working on the Motorola (Droid?) phone? Because unless they did indeed fake the videos, then they had the app working on at least one phone! Obviously more than 2 minutes were spent, and I'm guessing the problem to be overcome is actually a rather minor yet befuddling one.
As stated earlier, I've seen padKite partially working on a mate's Xperia X8, so we aren't talking vaporware, here. Please, Mean Mr Mustard, change your heart and let hope in, and encourage others to do the same, instead of working against what you've already acknowledged is something good enough to upset you by virtue of not working for you.
There must be some out there who've been able to get padKite at least partially working. Chime in, fellows, and let's make this fairy well again!

Open Thank You To All Developers

As I read about what works (and mostly what does not work) out of the box with the new tablets hitting the market, I am reminded every time I boot my gTablet (or use Flash or browse Market) how far the xda developers have taken my meager $400 hardware investment with their FREE custom firmwares.
TnT 4.2.4 does everything I could want, and from the comments I read on the other ROMs, most everyone is thrilled with the other options too.
Thank you, developers.
Well said.
I'm a graphic artist by trade so I have none of the necessary skills to do what you devs do.
Thank you.
If any of you need some design work, hit me up, I owe you one (I probably owe you more like 7).

Seconded! Without their hard work, we'd be stuck with a mediocre-at-best sub-$400 tablet instead of a high quality one.
+1 loving my GTablet thanks to XDA devs
Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Thanks g-tabdevs!
+1 grabbed one of these today. Such an awesome tablet that not well known!
I feels the same, thanks to all developers, your hard work made our G tab so great.
BTW, is there possible if any devs could write a simple guide to tell how to build a rom?
I know it is not likely that it could be easily explained, all i want is some thing like "how to start, what to read".
Thanks in advance.

This is still pretty relevant - hasn't really changed much:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854175
I know I've said this before, but I'm not a developer - I've tried to be one in the past and I stink at it. But, I'm pretty good at troubleshooting and packaging - thus my mods reflect that. If you've ever read my TNT Lite first post, I'm thanking people left and right for helping me out.
That updater-script is really the main tool to learn, and there's nothing really documented (I have looked). Like anything else, you can start with what someone else has done and then built on it - that's what I did.
And a LOT of trial and error. If you make a mod (or three), expect that your device will spend most of its time in "testing mode". It goes with the territory, I suppose.

[Q] Video "how-to" requests!!!

I am starting a blog which will be completely dedicated to "how-to" videos for the GTab that you can find at:GTabUnleashed.com
and I was looking for some requests, since I think it is much easier to do a lot of the mods if you can see it being done... less chances of making a mistake, and you can actually see that it works...
before you respond... I must tell you what I have recorded so far:
the basics:
Clockwork Mod Rooting
Rom flashing (Vegan 5.1 and subsequent update to 5.1.1)
& Market Fix
Flash fix... which was later made into flash 10.2/hulu fix
and swype keyboard
NOTE: I want to do the viewsonic boot logo replacement, and despite reading the post for that... I am pretty uncertain about NVFlash and may need some help... if someone could assist me that would be rad!
And based on what I've seen for videos out there... I felt it could be done better and all in one place...
so my videos are all shot from a tripod freeing up my hands
and in a dark room for clarity and will be edited so be as short and concise as possible giving you ample time to continue scouring the forums.
So what else do you want to see?
Well I suppose it's sort of been done but a quick overview of all the popular roms (at a decent resolution 720p or at least 480p) would be really nice.
Go over installation and difficulties
Speed
Functionality specific to the rom itself
Use for every day use
Use for development.
probably overkill but.. hey I'm just wishful thinking.
Basically videos showing off the rom doing things people would do like how long to launch from power off, performance when web browsing (pinch zoom, navigating, etc), gaming, scrolling on a decent launching (LauncherPro, zeam, etc)
Flashing custom Kernel (pershoot, Clemsyn). They are basically the same as flashing a Rom. but people get confused on this issue.
I would love to see videos on how to flash ROMs other than Vegan.
Thanks for the input... so far
Thanks you guys... I think all the "woot" madness has caused my post to generate little to no interest... but that is ok... the Blog has gotten 150 views in the last two day, and that is with no videos in it... so thats a good start...
to be fair... my videos are not super high quality, they are shot on a canon power shot... but they are steady and visible. Plus they are super short, who wants to watch a 15 min video on flashing clockwork mod... mine is a minute and a half... all of the screens you will need to see to be sucessful... and that really is the whole point...
they are only meant to be suppliments to the many well written, step by step, XDS forum threads that have given me the sweet running GTab I have in my possession today... the threads will be linked, the developers responsible will be given all of the credit... I will just be there for visual backing... seeing is believing...
but yes... I will flash every rom, play with every program, and game, and show off every keyboard...
eventually, you should be able to go to one site GTabUnleashed.com and see everything in one place...
because good info on the forums are getting harder to find everyday!
I am very interested in watching anything you can post that will give me more confidence that I am following instructions correctly.
yeah, I wooted LOL all the more reason I'm interested in anything you're willing to demonstrate. And thank you, wonderful idea you have!
