I wonder if anyone on XDA is going to buy the new Zune HD?

More info on Zune HD
I'm going to order it as soon as it will be available in my country The device looks nice, the performance is great, and the interface too.
Im selling my Archos 605 Wifi (160Gb) with DVR Station and 4 plug ins just to get the cash together to buy it
So the answer is YES
Not sure yet. I've been a Zune user for a couple years now and I love my 80. Best music device I've ever used.
The HD looks awesome, but I'm willing to trade more than half my storage for the new UI. Time will tell.
My only beef with the HD from what I've seen is that it doesn't look like there's a super-fast way to scrub through alphabetical lists. While I think the iPhone media UI is bland and uninteresting in general, the little rolodex scroller on the side works nicely. Zune HD looks like it takes a few more clicks, but maybe there's a shortcut we haven't seen yet.
Yeah, the UI is just marvellous! I've watched all of the films that are available In the alphabetical list you can click a letter and it shows you a kind of keyboard, when you press a letter it takes you to it. I suppose it's quite comfortable.
I'm waiting for a unboxing video - there's no info still on what will be in the box...
Now if we can somehow emulate the UI to work on our phones??
I got to play with one at best buy...good luck running that ui without tegra. Its so silky smooth, so clean. Hopefully some of this makes it to winmo7. I'm already signed up and will have mine opening day. I might end up getting some crap phone and using my Zune as my do all device.
andyjeezy, IMO it would be hard, because:
- the Zune has a capacitive screen
- UI is based on Windows CE
- the Zune works on Nvidia Tegra
I suppose WM 7 will have similar functions, already now 6.5 is based on the same concept of a simple text menu...
why have all these devices taken a step back in storage? I used to use MP3 players that were based on laptop 2.5" disks with 80+gig storage.
Take into account that it claims to be able to play HD tv stuff so thats got to be 720 to be any use, that puts a film at somewhere between 6 and 10gig depending on format.
Now, look at the storage options available on the Zune HD.....
edit: hell, even my Acer M900 has 16gig in it and my Omnia, 32gig and they are both phones!
The Zune has no longer a HDD, but flash memory, that's why the storage is much smaller... But thanks to that the device is lighter and more shock-resistant

Exactly and not capable of storing more than 1 HD film ..... so why bother even being capable of playing it?
And to repeat, my Omnia has a combined 32gig onboard/miniSD storage and thats a phone.
MS surely wanted to cut the cost of production of the Zune HD, so that it would be a real Ipod killer... It would be great if the new Zune had a memory card slot, as in your Omnia

Spot on! THEN it could be used as it SHOULD be used. One film per card - you could carry around a mini film library, how cool would that be?!
As it is, its rediculous that they are making them with such little onboard and (Afaik) no way to expand it.
Definetly getting it. Still have and use my Zune 30.
I was going to buy one in October when I'm going to the US but since my Touch 3G is coming tommorow, I can't see any point in getting one now, probably just get the new PS3
I forgot to mention. I hope the Zune HD can connect to wmwifirouter or HTC wifi. I know the older Zunes cannot.
The New Zune runs a modified version of WM6.5 with bits of WM7. How long will it take for people to hack it?
The hard part will be driver support.

The recommended profiles are roughly 3GB per hour. While 32GB might not be great for carrying around a mini film library, it WOULD be useful for carrying around a few episodes of your favorite shows (or maybe one or two movies). I'm much more likely to watch, say, the latest eps of House or 30 Rock on this thing than watching full feature films.
And they WILL be launching a 64GB version in the future, presumably when flash gets cheap enough.
A microSD slot would have been nice, but I'm pretty sure MS was trying to make the thing as small and sleek and easy-to-use as possible.

You have seen the size of a mini-sd card right? Suggesting that MS didn't install the capability to "make the thing as small" is stretching it a bit far in my opinion and a poor excuse if that really is the truth. As for easy to use, how easy is to unplug a card and plug a new one in?

The card is small, but the reader is bigger. Not saying it couldn't be done (or that it wouldn't be a good tradeoff), but the internals on these things get cramped.
As for easy -- sure, but we're not idiots. The Zune line is designed for mass market idiots. I think there's been concern that people would think they HAD to buy microSD for storage or that it would be cumbersome to manage exactly where the data is, etc. It sounds stupid to competent people who can handle such things, but having worked in IT for a while, I can say there's definitely some folks who'd have their minds blown by an SD slot.
I am hoping Apple does release a 64GB Ipod Touch this year forcing Microsoft to do the same with the Zune HD.

OK Guys I Have a HTC mogul and it is a really good phone i really like it.. But I am really concidering getting an iPhone.. I like the flow that the iPhone has where I dont get that with my mogul.... My question, Is it worth buying... I will be keeping my mogul, the iPhone will just be xtra for the features... Im not even going to be using the phone, just the data, text, and multimedia features.
Definitely... I used to detest the iPhone till I got my hands on one... and believe me... the Windows UI has a long way to go. I got bored of everything on the iPhone rather quickly but I must say that I am really impressed with how smooth and fluidic everything is. WinMo is **** in that respect. I especially love the Safari Browser... it is such a pleasure to use it to browse. I use my PPC to browse the net only as a last resort...but with Safari, I would find reasons to use it.
At, $400, it's a decnt buy. Go for it... i'd recommend it.
If you have money to burn, then do so.
That said so do I, but I still bring myself to buy it versus a good PDA
I would wait!
You should wait and keep your mogul because an iphone like ui is coming out on new years day.

Yo i like your set up you have there if i do get the iPhone it wont be until like the 3rd or 4th... I want to know how to do stuff like your screen... I'd say if you don't plan on using the phone perhaps look into the iPod Touch. You couldn't text or browse out and about, but could with Wifi. Will let you have the interface of the iPhone and keep you from having to pay a large monthly phone fee for services you're mostly not using.

Well i will be getting on a friend of mines plan and i will pay $29 to use the data and text. the plan i have with my mogul has 3000 min, unlm. text, unlim. data, equipment protection, unlim. n&w, the works basicly and it is only $37 after taxes..... so i figure $70 a month for 2 phones isnt bad
I feel for anybody that needs to ask the question of whether they should or should not get an Iphone.
Being a great lover of the WM and haveing gone through 2003, on and off the WM5 train and now on the WM6 rom (waiting for 6.1) I find at the end of the day the only reason I like WM is that I can play with it.
2 Weeks ago I went in a apple store in the USA (I am from switzerland) and looked at an IPhone. I have to admit its nice, the interface is nice, it flows, you can get the grips of it with a FAT thumb. It has 16gig of ram.
Now I have a Blue Angel, the reason I still have it is due to the fact that I am na old fart and need the 3.5 screen (Iphone has a big one).
I have am 2 gig SD card and can't listen to MP3 of it due to a the speed of the card and the device (IPHONE has 16gig internal).
I have a big fat thumb and am on the 7th or 17th stylist on my BA (have not seen many people taping with a biro on there IPhone (as they lost the stylist)).
I had to buy a new belt to keep my trousers up with my BA (or Kaiser), (Iphone is thin and slick).
My BA has as much sex appele as wet toilet roll. (face it the Iphone looks and feels nice).
So why do I still have a old BA ?
Well I cant play with roms, cook them or spend my nights in XDA.
I have ZERO software that I can download and try.
I cant Sync me works contacts or my privat ones as I happen to work for an organisation that has more than 20'000 people and thus is sort of on the coparte M$ train.
I work on the other Main Land and there is more to our lives than MM/DD/YY and English.
So I stick with a HTC device running on windows mobile and will most likly end up buying a Iphone for my wife.
Life sucks when you have to admit to defeat, HTC get your act together!!! You have to many damb phones that do some things, some have GPS and a small screen, some have a larger screen and no Keyboard, some have a keyboard and no FM Radio. And they are all NOT sexy!!!
Get yourself a Touch Cruise and then you can be the envy of the iFone crowd, you know it makes sense, 3G, GPS and you can "Play" with it, put the iFone screens on the BA and give it the other half (will she notice - probably; so duck quickly) - as an aside I have never lost a stylus from my BA - it is still stuck in the damn thing and refuses to release, I am not going to open it though just for this!
The Touch only has a 2.8 screen that I cant read

Well, I love the Kaiser, and just recently switched from the iPhone. This UI, and Windows UI, have a long way to go to compete with the iPhone's.
The thing is, you can't compare the two devices;
iPhone - Heavy in multimedia, Style, INTERNET
Mogul - Business User oriented; satisfactory multimedia use.

Hello everyone,
My name is Shadowline around here. I'm a freelance Photoshop artist, and HTC phone fanatic/addict. One of my current projects and latest interest is in the Google Android platform as a whole. I am a Linux Ubuntu user, and being such, seeing a platform like android come to my most loved possession the AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) and other phones to come in the future has me jumping for joy.
Now some people do not like HTC phones because of lack of support, lack of drivers, or something else completely. But I personally love the HTC phones just for the fact of how usable they are, how shiny and sexy they are, and for how many of us here at XDA are constantly adding to the feature list of our little plastic/metallic friends that follow us everywhere.
So enough of the back story of what you are here for, here's to all of those who still prefer something HTC over an iPhone anyday.
I present to you, the HTC Android Phone codenamed Centurion.

Based on a mix of the Kaiser, the Diamond, and preloaded with the Android operating system.
It only has 3 hardware buttons (plus 4 way trackpad,) from left to right, Phone Dialer Quickbutton, Move (4-way directional) select (center button,) and home.
It has a slide out keyboard, and a 1280x720 (720p) Multitouch screen that fits flush with the casing around it and is 4.5in from top to bottom. Filled with all the usual features, GPS, HSDPA, WIFI, Bluetooth, FM Radio, and 3mp Camera, plus a few additions, and is based around the NVidia APX 2500.
It is a little on the large side due to the screen that is on it.
Let me know what you think, and would you buy it if it was out today?
And what are your likes/dislikes about it? anything to improve? anything to add/remove?
And a photo of the Centurion taken from my kaiser.
U got great skills with Photoshop mate
thank you. Im glad you like it. took me abut 2 hours to finish. lol
nice project but u forget to set phone display to widescreen
omg
if this were realy... THIS would realy be the iphone killer.... for once...
a real iphone killer... lol

lol, I still have yet to see android in landscape mode, but I might photoshop that in, and finish work on the keyboard. (at least the newer version...)
Glad everyone likes it so far. I know I've fallen in love with it and keep imagining my kaiser to look like that every time I run android.
I might also work on a side view. I've never done that before so I will have to give it a go. And as far as weight goes, I havent thought about it much, but I'd guess it would be slightly heavier than the kaiser seeing as it is larger to fit the larger screen.
very nice looking phone. i hope htc are looking!
Thank you, I will attempt to finish it, and to make one more picture of it on its side for everyone as soon as I get my PC back. It caught a cold (virus) and I am in the middle of reinstalling windows just to fix a boatload of issues I was having.
a 1280 X720 screen would be nice, but the current wide screen res for WM devices is 800 X 480 !
I voted maybe as I want a dedicated number row like the new vario 4, this setup is what is putting me off the xperia
nice topic!
I voted no .. cuz i love my Pharos and want to put Android on it (saw that TI gave a demo of Android running on an OMAP 850 device)
but in a year or a little later maybe Id definately buy one!
Very sexy...
Looks good, hopefully it will be pumped up with memory when it comes out, like 1gb RAM ,2gb of ROM and at least 8gb of storage!!
but first....TOUCH PRO

i remember some years, when i had a nokia 6220 i used a flash theme like that. Android has grown a lot since
Checking in!
Just to share a thought. Looking back more than a year ago, I had to spend some good effort hunting for the TyTN 1 (Got the first available variant model Taiwan CHT9000). This year alot of decent phones came out, making decisions much harder to make. I guess it is good news...
The Raphael would be a dream keyboarded WM 6.1 micro SD device but since I currently own the HTC Diamond and Apple iPhone 3G. I have to double think before getting this. May be I will have the Diamond sold and get the Raphael.
The iPhone lacks AD2P Bluetooth which is a serious draw back. The battery is non swappable, no memory card (not really a big deal cos the itunes sync is much more reliable than Active Sync ).
Feel free to share your thoughts!
Wow, you really are a "PPC-Warrior" with all those devices :O.
drivers?
Shall we get the Raphael?
Mmm that depends of the performance of the gpu,
or presence of a graphic driver!
Does anybody has information about this issue?
Does it take SDHC or just regular microSD?
takes SDHC up to 32GB
I had a dream...
What about the famous HTC Dream. its been long roumered to be out before year ends. Would it be worth waiting for I wonder.
I have so been waiting for this device to hit the shelves. HTC should have had this thing available 2 weeks ago or at least made some noise about it. Imagine if people knew about this!!
Apple sold 1 million Iphones here in Australia in the first 3 days and you cant even type on the damn thing without having to constantly correct yourself if you have fingers bigger than what my 5 yr old has and the GPS cant speak directions, no messenger and list of draw backs goes on.
I'm just hanging for this thing to arrive.
Will the Raphael have the same diamond back as the ,uh, Diamond? I read somewhere that the diamond doesn't lay flat on the table. I also read somewhere that there will be an optional flat back. Any thoughts?
The T-mobile branded Raphael has a flat backcover...
I can't really think of any reason not to buy a Raphael. This looks like the perfect device for current standards. And I don't think it has any serious flaw, which kept me from buying other devices (like the video issue on Tytn II for example).
The Raphael looks indeed quite great to me, but I like the screen size of the Xperia. Would there be a reason not to go for the Xperia?
The only thing that's putting me off is the screen size. 2.8 inches really isn't very big, especially when you're used to the Universal and its wonderful 3.7 inch VGA screen.
The xperia 3 inch screen isn't much bigger than the touch pro, plus I prefer the touch pro styling. I also wonder if the xperia's WVGA screen will cause software compatability problems?

I have read the keyboard is awful. Unless they improve it before releasing, which is highly unlikely because that would change the design, I wouldn't buy it, afterall the main reason for me to choose Pro instead of Diamond is the keyboard, which is considered excellent by some people who had a chance to use it.
thanks, your arguments make enough sense to reconsider my liking. I wish the Diamond Pro would have a 3' screen ;-)
I heard that X-Peria is going to be released only in oct end , so thats quite some time whereas Raphael is scheduled to be launched on aug 5th i guess.
I am eying on the Raphael.

the physical screen size of the X1 is only 0.2" than the Raphael...
A good reason not to go the X1 is the wonderful Xda-developers forum
Another is that it's a bit delay
Personally the perfect phone for me would be a Diamond with micro-sd card support and a 3.5" screen with VGA but I sold my prophet and I can't no longer wait for the perfect phone. So, the best for now is the Raphael...
P.S. - Samsung Omnia is also a no go for me cause it doesn't have a stylus...
Actually the omnia has a stylus which looks like lipsick lol, there's nowhere on the handset to store it thought.. picture below.

Sunlight readable?
I am pretty sure I want to get the Touch Pro over the Xperia X1 apart from one thing. The reviews of the Xperia say it's screen is readable under direct sunlight. People I know with the Diamond say it is not.
I've spent the last year with the Tosh G900. It also has the 800x480 like the Xperia but it can't be seen outside. I was thinking that all these small screen high res phones were unreadable in sunlight. Maybe there is a problem with transflective displays at this pixel density?
The Touch Pro has a lot of advantages over the X1, 5 rows of keys, TV out and 640x480 screen (this is better I now know after living with the 800x480 for year and finding loads of apps that wont work). But I like to use TomTom while cycling so sunlight readable would be quite a bonus...
This phone so nearly does everything that I've been waiting so many years for, apart from decent camera with optical zoom and OLED screen. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years before I'm completely happy!
actually the diamond is the first pda/phone i have that the light sensor really works, if there is too much sun he will increase the display light, for me it is quite readable ( better than x7500 for example )
Soo Black friday coming up and it looks like there are going to be several deals on tablets out there.
Anyone have any suggestions on which one to get?
I'm hoping to use it for browsing around the house, watching movies on vacation, and various other uses(hoping there's a vnc client out there so i can use it to vnc into my HTPC.), also hoping for something w/marketplace access
I don't need one w/ celluar i have enough devices i can get internet from when i'm out and about.
Here's what i've seen so far
Kmart - Sylvania 7.1" comes w/2.1 Wi-Fi - $139.99
Toys R US - Sylcania 7.1" comes w/2.1 Wi-FI - $139.99
Hastings - Sylvania 7" WiFi Tablet w/ Android O/S 1GHz ARM 11 Processor 256MB RAM 2GB Hard Drive - $149.99
They all look to be the same tablet although each add words the device differently. Best buy has a couple of E-reader devices listed however i'm not sure if any of those could be rooted and flashed.(nook, cruz e-reader)
I've never rooted an android phone but am technically capable of doing so.
If this question has been asked and answered then please forgive my failure of using a search engine in an attempt to find an answer. Any and all helpful input is greatly appreciated.

me too
I've been looking at those too. I think they are all the same model. The Sylavania 7" has a 1ghz processor, 256/512 memory, TFT Resistive screen, 480x800
I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like a winner for a cheap tablet. It lacks Android Market but you can manually install APK's (these are the install files) from the SD Card. Plus there are alternative markets.
The only bad thing I see is the Resistive screen. I guess it isn't a kill joy but lots of android games use multitouch.
I'm actually wanting to buy it for my 4 year old son. He's showing a huge interest in my Nexus One and loves games like Angry Birds and stupid Basketball games and such. I figured it would serve as a decent web browser from the couch.
Supposedly the USB ports don't work out of the box, and the headphone jack is only mono. There are reports that an upcoming software update is supposed to fix them.
I'm new to the tablets, but supposedly the Sylvania is faster and more responsive then other 800mhz android tablets. So I am in the same boat. The Sylvania is around $119-139 which seems to fit the bill for my 4 year old. Anything else that compares that is rootable and upgradable from a rom standpoint.
All of these are resistive touch screen. I wouldn't pay $5.00 for a resistive touch screen on any device. So they have decent CPUs and ram, they run flash and can/will run Froyo? If they have a resistive touch screen, it's pretty much pointless. It's like using a ball mouse with my gaming PC, it just doesn't make sense to me. Just my opinion, nothing more or less.
Side note, for about $75-$100 more you could get a nice capactive touch screen tablet with even more features. Archos 70, herotab and a few others.
wth my post is gone.
Take 2:
Basically if I was buying one for myself, yea sure I would get a Capacitive touch. Lots of Android features requires it. But I'm more intested in the price point of $139. I'm looking for an Android tablet that will run games like Angry Birds and stupid basketball games for my 4 year old.
When he's not using it I might use it for couch surfing or something... but basically it is a toy for my child.
I'm not sure what the OP's primary uses are, but I'm looking for a cheap Android Tablet that has at least 2.1 on it and decent memory specs. I've been doing a lot of research tonight and I think the Sylvania is a winner. Lots of people are saying the run faster then most of the low dollar tablets out there.
One major flaw is the battery life is 3 hours. For me it isn't a problem as no one in my house should be on it for 3 hours. I just want to be able to throw a few silly games on it to keep my kid entertained and off my Nexus One.
[EDIT]
I just saw a post for the Maylong M-150 Tablet and it looks promising

For the kids, yeah it's a great price and product. I would much rather my kid have a tablet in his/her hands than a game controller. At least there is more of a chance they might actually learn something.
I ended up getting the sylvania and i am loving it. I have market working and Over on xda someone noticed a process called cell stand by was running and eating up the battery. Once i followed their lead and unistalled some apps they said to i am getting much better battery life on my sylvania. I am going on 3 hours of mixed use/standy and till have 61% battery remaining.

I ended up getting the HeroTab X5A from Merimobiles.com for $149.
800mhz
7" Resistive Touch w/ Multitouch
G-Sensor
Capacitive touch controls on the side
Glass top, metal surround
Android 2.1 w/ Market
Looks like it runs great.

Yea I've been playing with it. I loaded up Angry Birds and a few games he likes to test before putting it back in the box.
Yes it does have multitouch. I loaded Launcher Pro and lots of little apps. Runs great. The only issue is the only Widget available is Google Search. Supposedly the latest Firmware update fixes it but I had already wrapped it up for Christmas.
I willing to buy this tablet but i have some questions:
1- How is the battery life?
2- Is the screen to small for reading, movies and games ?
3- How is the resolution and clarity of text?
4- any common problem that faced veteran users
Please answer quickly because i am going to buy this tablet tomorrow
I greatly like this tablet though it is my first tablet.
1. Very good and even better when you tweak certain things in for your general use.
2. Movies are fine, reading is fine and I use it often, games are great also comparability is on the low side of things though.
3.Resolution is fine. It has a dpi of 160 and that's nothing to sneeze at.
4. Common problem are SOD's and the lack of source code for the tablet. (SOD is the sleep of death which is when you turn off the screen and it freezes) those are the two things that stand out to me.

1. slightly above average (of 7" tablets)
2. personally, I think its a perfect size.
3. it's "okay." Not great, but not the worst I've seen.
4. quite a few people have experienced problems called "sleep of death" - which basically means the tablet appears dead with the screen off... the only way to recover is press/hold the power button until the tablet reboots. A handful have had issues with corrupted flash memory that rendered the tablet useless. There have also been reports of wifi issues.

Thank you guys, that was really helpful
no, its just not snappy, the resolution and display quality is poor, battery life (and more importantly: battery life management) is poor.
unfortunately, apple hasnt produced a 7" ipad... cuz that would be a better choice
i have GN as my phone, so i support the android platform. its just that this tablet isnt very fun to use. ICS may change that... buts its a longing hope that'll wont get raelied
Wow, that isn't even remotely close to the truth. Do you even own one? The Tab Plus is easily the fastest and the nicest built seven incher on the market.

It's more responsive without Touchwiz, though. But it's still faster than the original 10.1, which was rather sluggish on the TW launcher.

now what possible incentive do i have for not expressing the truth?
it may be the best 7" tablet on the market, but that only speaks to the dearth of good tablets in that space. it does not make the 7GT+ a good tablet per se.

and whats with the default browser trying to dim the screen compared to the rest of the environment? utter bunk.
and the fact that certain apps are not available on 3.x. i have nice magazine readers and browsers on my phone... but want to use it on the tab? no go
I love my tablet, though I only slightly somewhat regret not waiting for the 7.7. Basically the same tablet with a Verizon connection that I'd never use, but with a lot nicer screen. However, I was able to get my 7+ for $270 of eBay, and the 7.7 I probably would have to pay full retail at almost $400 more. I like having cutting edge products that I hold onto forever, but I'm not sure the nicer screen is with that kind of premium in price.

Are you sure you are talking about the right tablet?
Love it, expect ICS to make it even better, and I have no "death sleep" issues, but then I have a refurbished one so maybe they fixed it.
For $275 only thing I know even close is the slower Best Buy version for $250.

1 - I've not had an issue with battery life, using it all day at work then reading before bed. I charge it at night, and I also prefer a very low screen brightness.
2 - I've read 4 novels in the 6 weeks I've owned it. It's maybe a tad small for comics but works OK. I don't have much opportunity to watch movies on it. I do like to use it as a 2nd/3rd screen to run youtube video, video podcasts, or a TV episode while doing something else on my computer.
3 - Text clarity is fine. I use Aldiko for reading and have the font set to Molengo set at 16 it looks great and is very comfortable for me to read.
4 - Not sure what is meant, I'm a veteran technology user and this is my first Android device. With that in mind the biggest issue I have with the device is that after an extended web browsing session it will heat up on the upper left side of the tablet. Also the tablet is picky about power, you will have to use the factory adapter or go out of your way to find a workaround to charge the device.
Overall I'm very satisfied. I think I would also have been satisfied with the 2 version vs the plus. I really love the form factor, the sd slot is handy, and it has good overall performance.
