[Q] Which Tablet do i get for $200 or less?

Soo Black friday coming up and it looks like there are going to be several deals on tablets out there.
Anyone have any suggestions on which one to get?
I'm hoping to use it for browsing around the house, watching movies on vacation, and various other uses(hoping there's a vnc client out there so i can use it to vnc into my HTPC.), also hoping for something w/marketplace access
I don't need one w/ celluar i have enough devices i can get internet from when i'm out and about.
Here's what i've seen so far
Kmart - Sylvania 7.1" comes w/2.1 Wi-Fi - $139.99
Toys R US - Sylcania 7.1" comes w/2.1 Wi-FI - $139.99
Hastings - Sylvania 7" WiFi Tablet w/ Android O/S 1GHz ARM 11 Processor 256MB RAM 2GB Hard Drive - $149.99
They all look to be the same tablet although each add words the device differently. Best buy has a couple of E-reader devices listed however i'm not sure if any of those could be rooted and flashed.(nook, cruz e-reader)
I've never rooted an android phone but am technically capable of doing so.
If this question has been asked and answered then please forgive my failure of using a search engine in an attempt to find an answer. Any and all helpful input is greatly appreciated.

I've been looking at those too. I think they are all the same model. The Sylavania 7" has a 1ghz processor, 256/512 memory, TFT Resistive screen, 480x800
I've been doing a lot of research and it seems like a winner for a cheap tablet. It lacks Android Market but you can manually install APK's (these are the install files) from the SD Card. Plus there are alternative markets.
The only bad thing I see is the Resistive screen. I guess it isn't a kill joy but lots of android games use multitouch.
I'm actually wanting to buy it for my 4 year old son. He's showing a huge interest in my Nexus One and loves games like Angry Birds and stupid Basketball games and such. I figured it would serve as a decent web browser from the couch.
Supposedly the USB ports don't work out of the box, and the headphone jack is only mono. There are reports that an upcoming software update is supposed to fix them.
I'm new to the tablets, but supposedly the Sylvania is faster and more responsive then other 800mhz android tablets. So I am in the same boat. The Sylvania is around $119-139 which seems to fit the bill for my 4 year old. Anything else that compares that is rootable and upgradable from a rom standpoint.

All of these are resistive touch screen. I wouldn't pay $5.00 for a resistive touch screen on any device. So they have decent CPUs and ram, they run flash and can/will run Froyo? If they have a resistive touch screen, it's pretty much pointless. It's like using a ball mouse with my gaming PC, it just doesn't make sense to me. Just my opinion, nothing more or less.
Side note, for about $75-$100 more you could get a nice capactive touch screen tablet with even more features. Archos 70, herotab and a few others.

Basically if I was buying one for myself, yea sure I would get a Capacitive touch. Lots of Android features requires it. But I'm more intested in the price point of $139. I'm looking for an Android tablet that will run games like Angry Birds and stupid basketball games for my 4 year old.
When he's not using it I might use it for couch surfing or something... but basically it is a toy for my child.
I'm not sure what the OP's primary uses are, but I'm looking for a cheap Android Tablet that has at least 2.1 on it and decent memory specs. I've been doing a lot of research tonight and I think the Sylvania is a winner. Lots of people are saying the run faster then most of the low dollar tablets out there.
One major flaw is the battery life is 3 hours. For me it isn't a problem as no one in my house should be on it for 3 hours. I just want to be able to throw a few silly games on it to keep my kid entertained and off my Nexus One.

For the kids, yeah it's a great price and product. I would much rather my kid have a tablet in his/her hands than a game controller. At least there is more of a chance they might actually learn something.

I ended up getting the sylvania and i am loving it. I have market working and Over on xda someone noticed a process called cell stand by was running and eating up the battery. Once i followed their lead and unistalled some apps they said to i am getting much better battery life on my sylvania. I am going on 3 hours of mixed use/standy and till have 61% battery remaining.

Yea I've been playing with it. I loaded up Angry Birds and a few games he likes to test before putting it back in the box.
Yes it does have multitouch. I loaded Launcher Pro and lots of little apps. Runs great. The only issue is the only Widget available is Google Search. Supposedly the latest Firmware update fixes it but I had already wrapped it up for Christmas.

Now, I develop websites for a living, so for me it's important to show my client his webpage and generate that "wow" factor in them
So even though it sounds superficial, I'm all about looks
With the keyboard, this baby looks GREAT (I saw it today at the Verizon store)
Anyway, with both tables having nice keyboards, my question is
if I buy the 32GB Verizon of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and I return the Asus Eee Pad transformer, what will I miss from the Transformer?
I guess I will miss the extra battery that comes from the keyboard
Today is THE LAST day I can return my Asus Eee Pad and put some extra cash and buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab
Benefits I see is
1) looks (again, for me that means clients will be happy with the display f their site)
2) lighter
3) smaller
4) better screen colors

Have you bothered researching the Tab dock? From what I've seen, it's buggy and not great. It doesn't fold, as I understand it, so it's two separate pieces unless docked. And, personally, I think it looks stupid. It's wider than the Tab itself, it's white against the Tab's black, and it lacks a trackpad (not necessary for a touchscreen, but it has convenience). And you'll be dropping another $100 just to switch to the Tab of the same capacity, assuming you have a 32gb TF. Plus you need to buy the dock. And as it has no battery, it's actually going to decrease your battery life to use it by drawing power from the Tab. In your own terms, if a website looks great to the buyer but doesn't work right, is that better or worse than a (still great looking) website of a different design that does everything right? And has twice the battery life? Websites run on batteries these days, right?
I say stay with Asus.
Edit: Good review here: androidpolice.com/2011/08/04/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-keyboard-dock-review-video/. Looks like you'll also miss out on expanded connectivity, and you'll be switching your input method every time you undock if you don't normally use the stock soft keyboard.
Man, the Galaxy Tab keyboard sucks on all fronts! They've got advertising dollars, but they should put some quality behind them or they risk doing the Apple thing and just end up selling a logo. Which they don't even have.

Well the keyboard DOES has an option to connect a Samsung USB extension
So really the only thing we would be missing is the battery
Let's say the website works great (good programming)
I just feel I can get a extra hundred here and there, and everything helps
If the device looks awesome, man I think it will make me a few more sales here and there
Even if the keyboard is not as great, I think the lightness of the new tablet will bring a new benefit
I have the Asus Eee Pad and man I LOVE it, however I don't feel it's a tablet, because it's too heavy, so I will never read an ebook for example

So, what you're saying is, you already decided and just wanted to let everybody know that you were switching?
If you really want a keyboard, you could get a Bluetooth keyboard. Either way, I think it will be awkward to be lugging two pieces around and assembling them every time you want to use them. You can connect a Samsung extension to the tablet itself (it's the same connector). Plus the bugs reported by others, the resetting of the input preferences . . . . In the end, everything you're touting as being better is just personal preference anyway. If it's better for you then that's great.
If form is more important than function to you, get the Tab, or an iPad. It's your money.

You can't really ask us what you'll miss from the TF. You have to ask yourself that. Is battery life important to you? How bout a native keyboard dock that is actually efficient?
They're both great devices, but I really think the 10.1 is geared more towards fun, media, and a average user. The Transformer is also geared towards fun as well as business and a average/professional user.
If I was showing a client something, I think the Transformer would make a better impression just because of it's look alone, it looks professional..the 10.1 has more of a playful look to me.

A couple of thoughts for the OP:
If it's about showing sites to clients, is the keyboard going to really be used ? Or are you looking for it to operate as a stand? Or just as a port for a mouse?
If you're developing mobile/tablet-friendly websites (which makes a lot of sense these days), then I'd say let them hold the tablet and experience the site that way.
IMO, one particular tablet isn't going to be responsible for a dramatic increase in sales over any other tablet. What you're really after is what the setup says about you and how seeing it all together makes them, and more importantly, you feel.
I'm biased, but to me an Android tablet would say to a customer that you're pretty tech savvy and wanted to go against the iPad flow. While the Gtab arguably looks more stylish, you could make an argument that the TF is a more considered purchase.
At the end of the day, it's all about how you choose to spin it.
And, echoing one of the previous posters, if you've already decided to switch and want to make the switch, do it. That setup obviously makes you feel better -- that will create more sales than any device that you happen to trot out.

Couldn't be happier about my choice
If the Asus Eee Pad would weight the same as the Galaxy Tab, it would be perfect
but with that weight even though it's well built, it's just too heavy to hold it and read an eBook for example

I'm trying to decide between these two tabs right now,
I originally dismissed the asus because it was older, we know the problems are weight (not the thickness as i nearly snapped my friends ipad)
but the asus is uglier, sharper and its screen doesnt look as nice (could really do with a goldilocks point between hyper saturation and the current screen)
oh and the prime, but that is out of my price range anyway

There are still more people using the gtab than I realized

I've been tracking of all the downloads off of my viewsonic g tablet for dummies site. The number of people who have been downloading stuff really surprises me. It looks like this puppy isn't going away any time soon.

I still use mine daily. I still haven't found a compelling reason to upgrade.

Agreed. I bought a HTV EVO View off of one of the sales on 1saleaday (about $200) because the stylus it uses is significantly better than the regular capacitive stylus. It's my new 'work' tablet, but the Gtablet is still my daily game tablet, Netflix tablet, and other junk tablet. Plus, the ICS development keeps getting better and better...

Other than the screens poor viewing angles, Viewsonic gave us a really nice piece of hardware. Thanks to Flashback and Team DRH this nice hardware can actually do what it's capable of, rather than the crappy TNT thing Viewsonic had on it.

With the exception that the tapntap software, the Gtablet is a beast waiting to get loose. Granted that its getting a little long in the tooth, but with the new roms it just gets better and better.

I've continued to use my lightly since I've gotten it a year or so back. I mainly wanted it to play videos for the kids in the car. I played around with various ROMs, tried Honeycomb but generally wasn't all that impressed and just recently went back to Froyo. Froyo worked pretty well and the UI downgrade from Honeycomb wasn't that big of a deal. But recently I've installed DRH's ICS ROM and it looks pretty darn good, so far it seems the best of both Froyo and Honeycomb, but really better than both. However, that's just an initial impression. Really good stuff that looks to extend the life of the hardware!

mine was out of commission for about 6 months. power connector wasn't working. been really busy, but the wife strong armed me into fixing it. it is working now and it has been a really good tablet. it is my first and only tablet, but i have been satisfied and I really enjoy the versatility. it is a lot of fun to swap out OS and customize. even with the power connector problem, i enjoyed breaking it down and doing some hardware repair.

I use the For Dummies site a lot, it's a great resource for changing ROMs, bootloaders, etc. Haven't bricked once.
My GTab is docked and stashed in a cabinet, where it's connected to my TV by HDMI and a Logitech USB KB/touchpad combo. I use it mostly to watch live streaming sports video (Fox Soccer and ESPN). The setup works fairly well but Flash and the available browsers limit what I can do a bit. Overclocking has made a huge difference with no apparent side effects.
Right now I'm using Mountain Laurel w Clemsyn's kernel after trying a few other ROMs. Hoping ICS will give me everything I'm looking for with my setup.

I made it that way so I could get a feel of how many people still has the gtab. I get about 4 pages of notifications a day. I really thought the downloads would die down after a month or so. Nope, downloads are still going strong.

She may have a couple of years on her (which is alot in the techno world) but is still a LONG way from being a dinosaur. A VERY capable tablet indeed.....which makes it very enjoyable to use, too. On top of the wonderful programmers that tirelessly work on ALL these android devices for their own fun, as well as recognition & knowledge, we were lucky enough to have someone take the time to develope a website like yours Goodintentions. I can only speak for myself but I DO know that is the very place that sparked my initial interest in android devices right from the getgo. And it is all put together in such a way that it was not intimidating or difficult to learn from. I, for one, am VERY grateful.

Ok, bad move on my part in using my box account to keep track of who's downloading. Haha, gtabbers have officially killed my bandwidth of 10gig a month.

My family uses our gtab literally every day. I wish we had another one

We use ours for gaming and my little one takes it to the grandparent's house for YouTube videos. We use it weekly if not daily!

I may be hijacking this thread a bit, but frankly, there is nothing to replace it.
If my requirements are:
1 GHZ Dual core processor
Accelerated Video
(Above two necessitate Tegra 2 or better)
7 or 10 inch screen range
Full USB host port
Mini USB port
HDMI out
(3 above must be available without docking, but adapter cables OK)
WiFi
Bluetooth
...what else meets these, and is really of such quality difference that it is worth upgrading?
I'm not going to buy new hardware just to get a newer OS, so the ICS discussion is not part of this, for me.

I still use my regularly.
I've been following the DRH ICS with some interest.
Clemsyn's Beastly Ultimate with some build changes w/ OC to 1.6mhz is what I use everyday. It's so fast and stable that's it hard justify any changes.

I picked one up today cause wanted to try it on ics etc.. Really like it so far even though it's still on tapatap..but not for much longer.
Still reading and getting it straight about flashing this .. Flashed other devices lots but each one is a new experience.
Hopefully I get USB support ..that's a big plus for me. Only drawback is poor viewing angles but I can live with them ! So off to grab for dummies...

I picked mine back up just this week's was going to sell it then saw TeamDRH ICS with working hardware acceleration. Running that now. While its pretty cool the ongoing incompatibility with games is still frustrating me.
If only these roms came with a pre configured build.prop to spoof a known compatible device I would be over the moon.

So, I just pulled my server out of the ditch after gtabbers killed my bandwidth. Almost immediately, people started downloading files from my website left and right again.
Simply amazed how many still use my website.

I bought mine a couple months ago from Woot. Got one for a friend as well.
It's still pretty decent compared to what's out there.
No reason to retire it just yet. especially at such a nice price point.

A year on and I still use mine daily, have it docked in my car for GPS navigation (GMaps/Waze) and music/podcast player. (4G Tether and GPS from my android phone)
Once I found a stable enough rom I haven't tried out many of the newer ones.

I guess everybody really care of their mobile phone battery life, especially having more than 4.0 inch screen consumes lots of juices.
Also it is widely recognised that when we turn on the phone and texting or web browsing, the battery consumption would be really high and drain lots of juices, which we do not want to.
In 2012 on 1st of June, Sharp and Semiconductor energy laboratory develop new technology for touch screen called IGZO.
It is 2 times brighter.
One fifth and one tenth save power compared to latest touch screen.
I guess this would help us to save lots of juices so that we do not have to care of battery life.
What's more, according to their spokesman, they are going to release and adopt this new touch screen to lots of new mobile and tablet devices on the of this year 2012.
Unfortunately, they do not mention about which device would receive this new touch screen.
But, clearly we will have this new tech on 2013.
I am using HTC Desire HD since 2011.
Possibly, I will wait for the device that has this new tech.

Yeah, im pretty sure of it.
They are planing on releasing this new tech by the of this year.
Im actually thinking of getting new phone this year, but, better not to since this new tech has much more better screen than any other phone.
So, I may take new phone that has this new tech.

If it does make a difference, are manufacturers like HTC going to use weaker batteries in phones to save money? Because the battery would last the same time it does with the current displays right (just not longer)?

I think any maker releasing a nice powered phone with display to boot which has a fair bit better battery consumption will definitely move a lot of units. As smartphones become the norm in time people will not enjoy the daily charge or multiple charges per day for their phone.
We definitely need better battery use from stock without having to revert to undervolting or clocking as not everyone will be savy enough to do so but will want battery consumption like their phones before moving to smartphones.

I guess this makes big difference, especially texting message.
When I text a message, it consumes 2% to 3% of my battery from displaying screen(75%).
It can be said that if I change the screen to that one, the battery consumption from the screen would be around 15% (75% / 5) to 7.5% (75% / 10), which means that it saves 60% up to 67.5% of powers.
Therefore, in my opinion, it saves huge battery power.

Well....I dont work for HTC.
So, I dont know.
However, the latest smart phone gets huge battery like galaxy SIII.
It means that they already have a manufacture to produce large battery.
So, we may get the same battery.
But, this is just my guess...

[A510] Some issues and sharing my 2 month experience

Hi guys. Two months ago, I got the A510. Sold my GT 10.1 and bought this. I am satisfied on the overall. Now let me share my 2-month experience with the tablet:
1) The two issues that I have faced out-of-the-box have not been resolved via an OTA. Those are namely a less-responsive-than-normal screen (even at high) and also heating on the lower right side.
The screen responsiveness is still a pain in the ass. More often than not, I need to tap twp/three times for input to register. Also, the responsiveness is ALMOST zero when placed on a flat surface. I have come to live with the heat issue. While I can feel it, it doesn't bother me anymore.
2) The tablet has become slow. It almost feels like a Honeycomb tab now. Apps launch slow, scrolling between homescreens is sluggish, browser has become slow....can't believe it. I have got around 30 installed apps currently on my tab, and I don't think that is too much, is it?
3) Lots of crashes and FCs while using apps/games. Yea, this has become worse lately. Every other game I play, the screen starts to flicker...any reason why? This is not limited to one or two games. Also, apps FC for no rhyme or reason.
4) How can I take screenshots? I am a game reviewer, and in most of the recent games, using the screenshot app from the Ring doesn't work. All it produces is a black screen. Is there any way to physically take screenshots? Power + volume buttons doesn't do it for me.

1) you can buy a case to avoid the heat issue. It's really work for my device.
2) sometimes the tab would become a little bit slow, but i think it's fast overall. Maybe you can do a factory reset or wait for the JB update.
3) As for me, just few apps crashed due to the wrong screen resolution; games crash may caused by some reason ( it needs network n sync access, data packets isn't support to youe device or sth else ), but the flicker issue is really existed in my device. I've met around 10 times flicker during 4-month use time.
4) My screenshot from Ring works fine. Have u tried other screenshot apps?

Do you have a recommended case that can reduce heat? I only use a sleeve since I'm concerned that a permanent case will further make the tablet warm.

the case i bought is made of real leather, as you can see, it's thick enough to reduce heat.

I agree that your hands won't feel it, but wouldn't that further trap the heat inside the A510?

i don't think so, the heat can go through the plastic cover, no problem for the case.
[ no case ]: the heat makes u uncomfortable after playing games for a long time.
[ have case] : just warm!
If the case trap the heat inside the A510, the tab maybe misbehaved, ( such as reboot ) but i haven't met the issue after putting the case.
