AT&T Tilt Keyboard Replacement - General Questions and Answers

I recently took apart my AT&T Tilt, actually, I took it apart about six times! (So, if anyone wants help and advice I can surely tell you how to do it).
The keyboard, certain keys have stopped working. The problem is some keys require firm presses started before I pulled the phone apart, but finally in the last pull apart, some keys stopped working altogether. I guess I just exacerbated or accelerated the deterioration of the keyboard.
I ripped out the keyboard (the qwerty keyboard, not the keypad on the front of the phone). The housing remains attached. After I did this, I read on xda that this is not what should have been done, because the keyboard itself is not the issue. I can verify this, because I now have the circuitry, for want of an apt description, lying underneath the keyboard exposed. When I depress those circuitry corresponding to the faulty letters on the keyboard that don't work, surprise, it doesn't work either, even though those circuits, respond in feedback as if I was depressing the keyboard. (I am wondering if ripping out the keyboard was a wise choice....................).
Prior to ripping out the keyboard, I pulled the phone apart and re-attached the keyboard membrane to the motherboard, so yes, I at least followed that procedure.
My conclusion is that I need a new keyboard with housing.
First question, would anyone concur with this conclusion? If not what could it be?
I am not having any luck finding just a keyboard with housing without having to pay astronomical amounts, i.e. prices allowing me to justify buying an iPhone! I have seen parts for sale in the xda marketplace. I have found a replacement keyboard and housing for a TyTnII/ Kaiser (from here https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-tytn-ii-p4550-oem-keyboard-w-flex-d-01433_297.html) , which I know has a different keyboard layout than the Tilt. However, this unit is for sale at a very competitive price and I am tempted to buy it.
Here's the challenge. I have a standard AT&T ROM. If I buy this keyboard, how do I get the keys to map correctly? I know that when I depress certain keys on this keyboard, it will respond as if it were an AT&T keyboard. If there is a keyboard driver I can load onto my Tilt that would be ideal. (I don't want to flash an entire ROM for the phone).
If anyone is aware of alternatives, such as a cheaper supply of AT&T Tilt keyboard with housing, or how to stick on a new keyboard and fix the non responding keys, I would be all ears. I have spent too many hours on this already, enough to justify buying a new phone outright!
Thanks all.

I changed my keyboard and I have orginal one I can trade my old one for reasonable price

Zombie.raised,
Can you confirm the keyboard is from an AT&T Tilt. If so, does it work? Do all the keys work?

Bad keyboard

I got a XV6700 off of ebay,
worked pretty well for a few months. Eventually the keyboard went bad. The presses felt weird and some of the keys stopped working. Took it apart and I can tell there is no way to remove the keyboard without destroying it. UTStarcomm's support is pretty crappy. Sounds like a hand full of people in a small office in NY city. I called a few times and got the same two ladies. Was hoping they'd forward me to a real tech that could sell me the part for the keyboard.
Is there even a snowball chance in h e double hockey sticks that I can get a replacement keyboard? Going to just ebay it for parts if I can't.
Really your best bet is to look for a 6700 with a cracked screen and salvage it for your keyboard. Or just get use to using the on-screen keyboard. There is some s/w out there that the makes on-screen keyboard look better and easer to use.

Keyboard key swap?

I was wondering if anyone has gone far enough in the disassembly process to see how the keyboard is put together. Another unforeseen side effect of getting a German phone is that the 'Z' and 'Y' keys are swapped. I'm hoping they can be switched (my previous experience w/ HTC keyboards says no). Thanks!

http://www.mikechannon.net/page1.html Look at the Fuze. I think its the 2nd one down
Thanks YellowGTO, I've taken a look, but it doesn't really go far enought or show what I'm looking for.

Well I am almost willing to bet you would need to buy a whole new keyboard and put it in. I bet they will be around in a few months.
I was thinking that as well...

Restore original kb layout on Fuze using Dummy keys

It occurred to me that it may be possible to swap the keys from a Fuze with the keys from a Dummy Touch Pro in order to get a NAM GSM Touch Pro with the original layout. I remember playing with a CDMA Touch Pro dummy and the keys depressed like a regular keyboard. Normally I would order the service parts online, but there don't seem to be any available yet.
Note that I am talking about the physical layout. As you know it is easy to switch between Fuze and original layout in software.
Anyone care to comment on this idea?
Usually the parts on dummy devices won't work. As the cases aren't the real thing the few parts attach differently therefore would be problematic attaching to a real case.
Indeed, I would need to take the two apart to see how they compare. Most often keys are simply pieces of plastic that sit on either rubber or plastic and the functionality is not contained within the key itself.
I mean I could get little stickers to cover up the Fuze key symbols, but this may provide a fairly inexpensive (>$30) physical solution.
I'm also talking about taking the 60 or seventy keys and swapping them with the keys on the Fuze. It would require taking the keyboard completely apart.
OK, so I have obtained a Raphael service manual, so I should be able to disassemble it without destroying anything.
Am I the only one crazy enough to think this is worth while?

If it does work, everyone will think you're a genius (and the cost of dummies will go through the roof). Make sure to let us know. The keyboard is my major annoyance with the FUZE. Why create a custom keyboard when everyone knows where the keys are on a QWERTY!
Just wanted to update this thread for historical purposes. Looks like I just had to give it some time.

Turns out the keyboard just sticks on. Had I went and purchased the dummy, I could very well have simply pulled off the keyboard and swapped it for the one on my Fuze. Buying the dummy would now be overkill since you can simply purchase the OEM keyboard for $10.

cleaning hardware keyboard? help

recently while using my touch pros slide out qwerty keyboard ive noticed that it is missing spaces quite often, like one in three times i press the spacebar it just doesnt do it.
im thinking that it might just be a bit dirty on the buttons (hopefully) but i have no idea how to get under the keys and into the keyboardor how to clean it.
can somebody please help me, i dont want to ruin my phone lol.
i need to know how to clean under the keys. . . or any other reason my spacebar wouldnt be working and how to fix it.
thankyou so much
If its anything like the Kaiser (which it does to me) the keyboard will be "stuck on" the actual "buttons" are in the phone and behind the letters are contacts, cleaning under the keyboard is going to be pointless i think, i had the same issue with my Kaiser, so i just bought a new keyboard off a well known online auction site that sorted the problems for me and didnt cost too much, about £10 and at the time i perfered to pay the cash than send it back to HTC/T-Mobile to get repaired and be without it for 2 weeks.

Polaris Scroll Wheel \ D-PAD Broken :( Need Advice

If anyone knowledable on anything that pertains to my problem could help me out I would be very grateful..here's the scoop..
I have had my polaris for over a year now (out of warranty) and for the longest time I've had issues with the touch screen not responding correctly and having to re-calibrate it all the time. I finally figured out what the issue was yesterday after I hard reset the device and the screen was still messed up...I had been using a dock for this device that isn't manufactured very well -- using the dock day in day out for a few months at work actually bent the pins on the USB connector on the cruise to the point where some of them were touching each other (yikes!)
So, I gave the phone to my dad who's an engineer, he took it to work and used a microscope or whatever and some tools and got the pins back straight again..now the screen works fine! Needless to say that dock is in the garbage now. The brand was "BoxWave" -- stay away from their products, they are JUNK!
Anyways -- I still have a problem with the scroll wheel.
Spinning the wheel does not work at all -- the Up, Down, and Left buttons work when pressed, and the wheel does light up, but spinning it doesn't do anything. Also the Right button doesn't work either. The button in the middle works okay. All of the working buttons cause the light to go on.
The logical conclusion here to me anyways seems to be that the bent pins caused permanent damage to the scroll wheel...I'm very glad it didn't cause perm. damage to the screen (or anything else, so I hope!!)..but anyways -- what would be the best option for me at this point?
Call HTC and have them fix it and pay out of pocket?
About how much would they charge for something like this (ballpark)?
My dad is a very skilled electrical engineer -- he would be willing to take it apart and fix it for me at work..he's got all the tools and stuff for it and doesn't mind at all...what parts should I look into ordering?
Thanks for any help anyone can provide here.
Hi,
I have a similar problem the up, left, right and turning the wheel does not work on my polaris either and I have not damaged it whatsoever. So, i do not think your button problem is because of a possible short circuit. But, sorry to tell you but I do not have a solution to the problem.
I thought I was certain, but occaisonally my screen still dies.
Perhaps it was permanently damaged? It is much better than before though -- but no matter what I do -- the wheel spinning does nothing, and the Right key does nothing at all.
Do you have any clue what part we would need to get replaced?
I am looking to replace the screen as well due to scratches.
I believe it's called a "digitizer" (the screen part not the wheel)
No, sorry. But if you do find out let me know as well.
Thank you.
found this on ebay
Hi,
Guys I found this on eBay. It says it can repair this kind of issue. Although I do not have the time to test.
So, here it is
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-Touch-Cruis...ries?hash=item19b5e3f64f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
P.S. if anyone does test this please give us your feedback. Thank you
What?
Did you post the wrong link or something?
That is a SIM card.
This thread is about the scroll wheel \ DPad.
EDIT:
Nvm, I see in the auction it says its a ribbon or something.
I dunno about this one...but it's cheap.
I still have not even gotten around to repairing my screen \ usb port though...god damn money.
If i order this ill let u know.
OK so I just purchased a new charge port and digitizer, but I have yet to see ANYONE selling a replacement scroll wheel.
Alot of people are selling the "housing" but it's missing the wheel!
Anyone know where to get a replacement metal panel and wheel only, not the entire housing?
I found a jog wheel for the shadow -- wonder if it would fit?
I have the same issue, the jog wheel doesn't work and neither the right button, but everything else works & lights up the keypad part....strange that this is 3 of us with the EXACT problem, maybe there's something we need to figure out? btw, i used to hardly use the buttons, but i used the jogwheel a lot to scroll.
I also have the BoxWave dock, however, i've found mine to be of great quality & use...reading your post made me paranoid so I checked my usb connecter over & over but thankfully everything looks very normal.
I came across this post, because I was actually looking for some user advice on replacing your own housing & wheel. I already found the entire housing & keypad on ebay that comes with the screwdriver set, and i have the manual to assemble & dissassemble.
I would rather do it myself so i wouldn't have to do without my phone while waiting for this to get repaired, but i also don't want to do it if it's very tricky with a big chance of busting phone, so i'm looking for a feel of easy-medium-hard. I've already done something similar 3 years ago to my I-Mate Jamin as well as replacing the speaker, so my technical skills are probably around mid-level.
Anyways best of luck, i'll update this post later to tell you how it went (this could be in 2 weeks time from now).

Housing including the jog wheel and electronics?
I also ordered a usb connector and apparently they sent me one that isn't compatible with the cruise...I think I am just gonna buy a broken one and get the parts from it..they seem to be rare compared to other HTC models!

and i also found this for you (is that what came wrong), but you have to make sure it's the 2007 Touch Cruise and see if yours is the POLA100 or POLA200:

I had the same problem but on a 2 year warranty Touch Cruise. Phone was fixed and re-installed with WM 6.1
Know I face Bluetooth connection problems again and the BT hotfix is not accepted anymore.
I do have to say that the upgrade after re-installing should have been left behind.
I have the same problem... Scrol wheel not working en button to the right
anyone ever fixed this?
Hey Guys!
I've got the same problem with the wheel and the right button. So I was wondering if anyone fixed the problem?
I have no warranty anymore
I think I know what's your problem, mates.. It seems that it is essential for almost any P3650 - the cable, which is going from the jog wheel to the keyboard control unit tears apart just before (or exactly at) the copper pads on the molex thingie, that plugs into K/B unit (damage is so slight, that it barely can be seen).
I had no luck looking for the jog wheel sold seperately from housing, or at least with that plastic-chromed buttons cover. If anyone finds out that it is possible to obtain it seperately - I would greatly appreciate
Btw, same problem goes for sim holder's cable - I have replaced mine 2 times already (you can get 'em for around 15$ from ebay).
Sorry for my english - it's a bit rusty atm
Same problem here..wheel doesn't function can't find the part by itself ..
Touch Cruise jog wheel & keyboard
Exact same here - jog wheel scrolling broken & right selection does not work. Besides, my "call" key stucks time to time.
So for now I've just got both of them - jog wheel and keyboard (not the entire housing) from ebay, 15 & 7 $ respective
wheel ordered from the following ebay location :
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=260656153778&si=1E2jM09T8qOM9DzM6uzrXo5Qiqg%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT
same provider has keyboard also, for some reason it is not on eBay active items. But you can contact the seller and ask for it.
I gonna replace both in a near future, and will update about the result.
