How smooth do the custom Hero Roms run on a T-Mobile branded MT3G? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

With the T-Mobile branded version of the Magic only having 192 MB of Ram compared to the HTC version having 288 MB, how smooth does the Hero Roms run on it? anyone with Rooted MT3G's please give us your two cents? Please tell me it DOES NOT run like it does on the T-Mobile G1.

still investigating. I am a noob to Android (been on WM so far) and i have tried a couple of them - and they load fine and they seem responsive, and the display is crisp and then once the screen times out, when I return - the display is very blurry or pixelated - I think its because i am not setting the compcache or linux-swap correctly. Have been reading up as much as I can and am still trying it out. but even though it is blurry, it is responsive (i am using JACxHero 1.2) and it looks great. Hero does have a lot of functions I want, but if I can't get this swap\cache\display issue sorted, I may go back to cyanogen (who IMHO has the best Ion\Magic ROMs)
Hope that helps. will post update, if I get it working

Did you figure out the pixelation problem? I'm getting that also.

i really thought i was the only one with this problem since nobody's brought it up. so far the only ones i haven't had a problem with were fatal1ty's and evil's.

you can use rav1.2.0 recovery to format your sd into 3 partitions

I'll try those as well then, and see what happens. It's funny, I couldn't find any posting about the display problem, but we can generate hundreds of pages of a thread if it involves a tiny speed increase

at the moment, I've been using fatal1ty's rom because tether isn't giving me problems.
evil's rom is set up great, aside from the tether problem.
otherwise, it's the rom I would go with.
set up fat32/ext2/linux-swap

Running Evil's right now on mt3g. The display works for me when I activate it after a timeout. I'd love to know what the difference is that does that. I'm using the same SD card, same partition layout.

does your wifi tether ever start up on that evil rom? that was the only problem i was running into. it was the qtek rom i was having display problems with

rooted mt3g ran qtek w/ compcache perfect. running noname v3 amazingly. was slow but used overclock widget and runs great now. only problem is i wish they didnt default apps to sd. the tmo phone has 288 megs or app storage so theres no need for apps to sd. i think it would run much better w/o it. but yes hero runs great on hero roms. only problem... not much of a problem i love my txt notification led to be blue, cyanogen lets u change color built in and sms popup lets u change as well but sms popup doesnt work on hero so im stuck with green. battery still sucks

A New ROM

I've been given a new replacement Wizard, so im back to my old crappy T-mobile ROM (cringes). I have not been on for ages, so i just thought id ask you to recommend me a good new ROM.
Im looking for a largeish pagepool so it will run nice and quick. I have an SD for programs etc . I wouldnt mind some decent software as well, not really bothered about the stupid cube or any of that ****, but HTC Home etc working correctly would be nice. See what you guys think
There are currently many great new roms here, so long as your phone is unlocked and ready to receive the new roms. There are sticky posts at the top that tell you how to tell if, and how to unlock the phones accordingly.
G3 or G4 ??
The latest roms here are working well for the majority of the users - and each offers a little something for everyone, depending on your needs - one may be better than the other.
Slim 6.1 / TNT lastest / KhanX / Octavio 6.3 / Vanilla roms
All great roms, read the posts, see what users are having issues with - and pick the best one for your needs. No easy answer - try them, and use the one that best fits your needs.
Good luck
Looks like they've given me another G3 which is good. I like the the G3 method, allows me to revert back if it ever needs fixing again. Ive been looking at that Slim one, which looks very interesting. TNT is what i had on before, but it sometimes was slow, but that was possibly my fault. If only i could utilize the internal memory and make a bigger pagepool
What would you guys recommend then, based on what im looking for?
Doesnt matter,look at bill_in_mtl his post,just get oneand try,G3 is oke,if you have a G3 device
true it doesnt, but i havnt been here for a while

I think one of the differences between say the TNT and the Slim ROM's is the amount of programs built into them. I have used the Slim ROM and liked it as it has very little included. The TNT has more built in even the offical version has more than I like but that is just me.They all seem to work well. Myself I cooked a very plain 6.0 ROM with theloons kitchen and so far I keep going back to it. Give me a kitchen for the 6.1 ROM and I'm all over it. its right as said that he may release a kitchen for his ROM. That would be great.
Kirby
Im trying the TNT rom. lets see where i get .
Im going to change the pagepool, whats the maximum recommended? is there any sort of size where the performance wont improve?
Cheers
OK, whacked on TNT. running great, but the Home audio manager (which im very used to using lol) comes up with some error "AudioManager.exe" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate....... etc etc. Is there anyway of signing it, because i know its installed properly!

I think the max page pool is 12Mb but could be wrong. Somep;ace in the system is a place to tell it not to worry about trusted certs. Can't rememebr where it is at but a search will turn up the info.
Kirby
working on finding that place. Now ive upped the pp to 12mb, it runs like a charm. and i installed this SRS WOW driver and its a beast. just going to install home then im sorted
Someone said it might not be, and thats its files missing. but that actual software itself works. it just happens to not execute from the front of home!
Okay, i think i want to change already. When you press the power button, the audio goes off as well that was one of the best features of the old TNT rom. Looks like its time for a change

Just go back to TNT's latest 6.0 ROM it is real nice.
Slim 6.1
By Merlin Reloaded
Super fast and super stable and not loaded up with ANY bull****. That means you can add all the bull**** your self.
I tried TNT 6.1 Rom and even with a huge pagepool it ran slower. I noticed that 6.1 roms run better with a smaller PagePool.
I tried OCtavio's rom but I think it had some annoyances I couldn't live with.
TNT is best in Batery,
Octavio's rom was very good..
But so far my favorite is Merlins 6.1 It has a medium drain on the battery so I bring My charger if I plan to surf the web at starbucks. other than that it will last over a day with normal use. (like 1hr conversation and about 50 text; google downloading mail; and so on. also WiFi G enabled.
ahh, i migth put the slim one on just to try it. but id rather not have it drain battery. for some reason the sound has gone dead on my phone. ive read somewhere its a glitch (ive got that one i posted in below). how do you get the sound back ?

Sounds good. Ill bang it on tonight. Im using one thats real nice, but its just a bit too clustered, if you get what i mean. Theres applications everywhere and its totally unsorted. seems very badly done, but actually it runs great. I wouldnt mind SRS WOW as well and I know TNT has it, so i shall experiment. Does the audio manager boot from HTC Home etc? And does it allow me to turn the screen of when listening to music ?

What is the best HERO rom for 32B?

Was looking into installing the hero rom on my magic
was going to use
JACHeroSKI 2.7.3
looking at the good replies
anyone have any other suggestions?
something that ALL the features work without problems (wifi, bluetooth, etc) and no lag?
thanks in advance!

Umm Best is all relevant no matter what rom u choose there are going to be issues and might want to post this in the general section
ive tried a few and feel that qteks swap hero is the fastest running
available here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540745
I think Qteks or eVIL D Hero rom are currently the fastest/best for 32B.
thanks everyone!
will try the qteks
and im sorry for posting in the wrong section
I used qtek on my mt3g and it looked great and ran amazing. the browser is double touch and works really well also has flash. but it killed my battery from 76% to 20 in 30 mins of use.
Have to agree, I've been using the qtek ROM for a week or so now and am loving it. Theres a bit of lag when switching between heavy duty apps ie copilot but no real show shoppers. By the looks of it though there are some interesting things happening on the dream boards that will go on our sapphires quite easily.
Until then I'm sticking with qteks swap version.
Have fun
Just curious I have the dreaded perfect spl that they have rooted! YAY! But that's not the point, I was wondering if it is actually necessary to root my phone to install a hero rom? If it is I have everything ready already made the gold card and all that stuff! Thanks for the help.
Yes you have to change the SPL is you want to load custom ROM.
I tried qtek's compache rom, Worked really well the first time... Then next reboot most of the text on the icons were replaced with Squares... Made it unuseable.... Hmm.. I am going to try the swap version now.
qteks works but my sms doesnt work which is a show stopper wit me
JacHero 1.2. BT and LED's work. BUT wifi does not.
From using CyanogenMOD, to Qteks ROM, to JACxHero 2.7.4r2. The best form my experience has been JACxHero, I know that Cyanogen isn't a hero ROM, but it is a very well known ROM that some may try. Qtecks ROM was nice, but because the SMS did not work it was no dice. JACxHero is very fast once you change your home screen up a bit, SMS works, WiFi works. They only downside, that I've experienced is that when you go to create a text message and you turn the phone sideways to type in landscape mode, the keyboard does not change. It changes for any other app and the browser, but doesn't change for messaging. So my vote will be JACxHero 2.7.4r2
Testing ZeroXd's port... seems very speedy and fluid...
Someone else's opinion about it ?
Unfortunately I am having a little snag her... evil and Jacxhero just sit there and loop at the "Hero" starting screen and fatla1ty doesn't have the screen problem with the pixelization (spelling?) but the rom is incredibly slow! Qteks was nice and fast but as stated before the screen problems are too much, I guess I might wait a little while until something not so buggy comes out. Unless some one knows of something better or some other rom's that I haven't tried..... or how to fix the looping problem on evil's rom and Jacxhero? - Thanks JinX

im using MT3G, JACHero 2.7.3, works great! although, i hate how i always get the loading "htc" screen after going through too many apps or trying to change the wall paper. still with this problem, i'd say this Hero ROM is the best. ive tried (evil Hero, Drizzy V3, and ZeroXd)... they all had major lag. or maybe its just me. lol.

I too have tried different ROMs and the latest one I've flashed is Drizzy's Hero-V1.2r1 [09/09/2009]. It has been 2 days of use and I am really liking it. It is clean and apps have worked well. I think there is a v1.3 coming soon so look out for that one.
My two favorites right now are Modaco 1.5 and Evil Hero 2.3xx. IMO Modaco is a little bit quicker/smoother with Sense UI but since Evil is sporting BFS the responsiveness of some of the apps is MUCH better.
Currently I'm running Evil but I literally just flashed it 2 hours ago so I'm still playing around with it / testing it. I also just got my class 6 sd card in the mail so I'm about to partition that bad boy and reinstall a Rom. Can't decide if I want to try Modaco or Evil first...
id say none atm as they all have annoying problems of swallowing up them all important messages
have a cyanogenmod rom there fast as **** and customisable summit rotten
As of now MoDaCo 1.5

MT3G and Hero I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!!

OK, i know im prob going to be it with allot of search answers and what not but i searched and i cant find the answer i need.
So i have a mt3g and it is rooted, cyan recovery, stock radio and stock spl. I have the ability to flash what ever rom i want, every time i do it works fine to install it. I normally run Cyan and the m_blend theme, how ever recently i have been trying out different hero roms. As it turns out i really like these roms and what they have to offer, however the only one i can get running smoothly is a jac heroski rom that apparently is out dated. Every time i flash to something newer it flashes fine and for the most part every thing work, how ever when i hit home i just get a loadin screen for at least 30 sec... now when i search this it says to make changed to my partitions on my sd card, but i am NOT running a partitioned sd card. Is that the problem? i thought that was only necessary for space on the G1? Any ways i guess what im asking is why does every one say to flash your spl or the rom wont install but it does fine? and why is it run fast except to home screen??
yes it's the problem. partition your sd with at least 96mb of linux swap. it has the same ram as the G1. Also, post this in general next time.
cool, thanx for the answer, how do i set that up? i searched for linx swap and came up with nothing?
Hi.
If you try Amon_RA recovery so you can do it from ther.
I would say that Amon_RA recovery is the best tool for flashing Rom`s.
If you have root and a terminal on your phone takes you to 2min after you've added recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img on your sdcarde.
go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
actually he has the mt3g, so he needs the 1.5.2G, not the H recovery.
make sure you back up your sdcard, though. its gonna erase everything on it to format it. (that caught me off guard, before. )
Thanks you guys rock... Now im looking for a good hero rom with all the working parts

You heard wrong. Plenty of these roms that these devs have worked on are quite reliable and more than ready for everyday use. The only problem that I partially agree with you on is the speed. I wouldn't say it's slow. They are not as fast as Cyanogen or another stock rom, but it's not to a point where it's unbearable or you can't live with it. Some are actually pretty snappy if you have your phone set up right, you just gotta know how to tweak it for your phone.

Exactly what he said....I will just add my two cents, as i have been in your shoes before. I have tried alot of ROMS and my favorite Hero(actually magic sense) rom is Trojan Hero (by Eugene373). everyone has thier own opinion just letting you know if you havn't tried it.
Use Swapper to change your swapper settings and tweak them to your phone. my settings are as follows 128mb swap and 80 swappiness
And one MAJOR POINT i can't stress enough which i noticed a big difference was the memory card. it's a known to have a class 6 sd card but for new people we never really know.
Once i changed it it gave me a big boost.
hope that helps

[Q] Planning a ROM change - need advice

Hi,
I am currently running CM6-RC3 on my G1. I am fed up with the slowness of the phone and I want to go to a fast OS, though I am spoilt rotten by some of the Froyo features. However, I think a fast ROM is still my prio.
First step is to get a Class 6 card and I have ordered an 8gig one from ebay. Should get that in a couple of days.
The second step of course is the ROM itself. Currently I have shortlisted SuperD 1.11 and SuperFroyo 2.6 Lite based on the reviews that I have read on the forum.
Firstly, if anyone has used these two ROMs, or can give me a comparative opinion of these two, then it would make my choice all the more easy. Is the SuperD really that that fast as compared to SuperFroyo that I should willingly sacrifice some Froyo functionality?
Also, how do I flash either of the ROMs? As I said, I have CM6 and AmonRa 1.7.0 Recovery. Now SuperD goes on about installing a legal base ROM and DRC83 (which itself has some new and updated versions in many threads) and then installing SuperD 1.11 itself. But coming from CM, is that necessary, or is it dangerous, or in short what am I supposed to do?
Similarly, if I have to flash SuperFroyo, should I do any preparations or just wipe and flash from the recovery?
The tough thing is that CM is so so so well documented that the other ROMs seem stark compared to that. I already have bricked a phone during the JF ROM era, so I don't want to screw up the one which is currently working. Any sort of detailed help, or pointers to other thread would be most helpful. I have been searching the forum and have not found anything that clarifies my doubts.
TIA.
I'm interested in the answers to your questions too. I've tried to improve speed and responsiveness by using many of the tricks posted in various threads but for daily usage the lags and the battery life are still not acceptable for me (though I like many of the Froyo features).
Having said that - you might want to check out the last pages of this thread [FAST][STABLE]SpeedTeam Froyo [v3.1.1][OFFICIAL RELEASE][8/23/10]
XxKOLOHExX is developing a 1.6-ROM with as many Froyo-Features as possible while retaining the speed, responsivness and stability of Donut. I'm very much looking forward to that ROM.

the final cyanogenmod v6 is really fast and stable. ive been running it since it was uploaded and havent had any problem at all.. kinda weird lol im used to some kind of force close or reboots but so far this rom seems really stable, you should try it out.
You might want to figure out why cm6 is so slow for you. Its probably the user, not the rom. I'm not a cyan groupie but this is by far the fastest rom I've used...and I've tried A LOT of different roms.

Really?, and you using it on a G1? CM5 was quite fast until ADW crashed on me and I had to reflash - decided to flash CM6 at that time. What are your SD partitions, if any? I am running it plain with only one large FAT32 partition.
I am a heavy texter. On Hero ROMs, it takes about 500-600 text's to start FC's and loading screens. On Froyo, I don't know how, but it took 200-300...Im on Super E right now and I can say I'm pleased. I'm at 1,902 Texts right now and its running ill say 90% of how fast it was when I just flashed it.

Everyone has their personal preference with regard to swap or no swap, compcache, jit, etc. I have no clue what works best even on my own phone (mt3g). But to let you know, I have a 32 MB swap partition, 512 ext 3 or 4 (can't remember, I think its ext4) and the rest FAT32.
donut/1.6? super d
eclair/2.1? super e
froyo/2.2? super f (not completed yet)
theyre all based off CM

I felt the same way. I've went back to CM4 and CM5 trying to find the right balance. I am now back on CM6 latest and I think I may have found the key to making my phone perform well.
Swap. On a G1 with Froyo it seems that swap is a must. Once I enabled swap my market issues (would return to home at random, especially when searching) and other weird issues went away (shortcuts to URLs wouldn't open he URL but just my homepage). Try swap before you completely bail out of CM6. Even running swap on FAT showed a lot of improvement. I have noticed though that after a couple of days my phone starts acting funny so I turn swap off (swapoff command from terminal) and then back on and things clear up.
Of course this is all my common observation but I really think swap changed CM6 on my G1 from too slow for everyday use to the best ROM there is. I really think with the extra RAM needed for Froyo there just isn't enough left for simple apps (market, browser, etc) to function correctly.
Matt
Super D 1.11 (aka 1.10.4) is quality and I'm so happily suprised at how fast it is
I had forgotten what it was like to own a phone that just well worked without hassle of lose of functionality. As pretty as Eclair and Froyo are they simply can't match a good donut.
Give it a try and use the Setup Up Guide for Donut in my sig a look, it was designed around Super D

i just went to Super-E cause all of the froyos are too slow for my taste and all seem to be based on CM6 so what's the point? Plus one of my fav devs, Ben isnt working on SuperF atm so im kind of sad about that. His was my fav but its discontinued . The battery on it is good and speed, not as quick on its feet as donut but gets the job done, plus still has some newer features.

HTC Touch Pro 2 With frx07 bundle

hello,
my question is.
i have the tool oct v1.5 on my device but when i activated it it works perfectly running very smooth and then it come to my point,
when ive done that i want to boot the frx07 bundle with froyo but it keeps hanging and wont start when i boot the overclock program and after that the bundle because when i dont the overclock thing it starts right away but when i have it booted its really really slow
please help me with that and couldnt find anything like this asked
Have you tried booting Froyo without running the OCT at all? Why is the OCT necessary?
yeah ive done that but when froyo is booted the phone works very slowly thats why i asked if you people got any solution to fix it and want it to be working faster cause its to slow now cant do anything

I'm unfamiliar with the current Android situation on the Rhodium, but what about an overclocked kernel? Are you running a NAND ROM, or from the SD?
Sent from my HTC Vivid
im running it on my sd card dont know how else to do it
There are some testing NAND builds in the Android Dev section for TP2. NAND runs Android from the handsets memory, as opposed to from the SD card.
This alone will give you a speed boost, however the general consensus is that it's just not quick regardless. I see some users using OCT, but many of the Chefs recommend 'No Frills CPU' instead. Perhaps you could give that a go instead of OCT?
ok im gonna try that no frills thing hope it works i let you know thnx in advance
nice the no frills makes it a little faster but it dont overclock above 528 so i put minimal to 528 and max the same it runs a little smoother now i dont want to f*cks with the nand version until there is a smooth version of it thnx very very much for this
