Best ROM for GPS / Landscape - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

Hi, I get a Kaiser tomorrow which is on UK T-mobile, not sure what rom is on it.I want to use mainly as a phone and for GPS (igo, Memory Map). Having read alot on here today trying to decide what rom to go for, my head is now swimming .
Please could anyone recommend what sort of ROM to go for.
I have heard that WM6.1 is not good for GPS, and that 6.0 is better. Is 6.5 any good for GPS? Any recomendations?
I want to use the phone in landscape as well as portrait ( hence I want a phone with a keyboard) so am I right in thinking I should avoid ROMS with Manilla 2D?
Whats a good stable rom to start with that will achieve the above, I'm a Noob here and need to get in gently
TIA

Mostly any OS should work for GPS without any issues. I would suggest dont update ROM for a while, get used to your phone, and then read and flash and pick! Good luck.

And just as an addition read the rules of posting, there is no best ROM for anything as so many variables are involved, the stickys and wiki will help you. Good luck.

any one willing to help ?
i think a lot of people will tell you to try them out and see which one you like.
i wish that the people that have tried them out would make like a rating system and tell us from one to 10 in catergories like which is most stable, faster, .. battery life.. things of that nature.
i myself am still using jwrights, i heard ivan's is better.
i just haven't upgraded for some reason.
I recommend this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330662 and it's really good. No videocall in this ROM but no videocall in my country...
But WTF, read forum before posting, 3E183563 such topics already...

the problem with your suggestion is that different people use their phone differently which makes the rating system a bit difficult.... one rom may be good for someone while another is not... it may be because of the other softwares installed or the features he/shes uses often or not often... take for example bluetooth connectivity... some will have trouble pairing a device for a specific rom while another will not due to the type of device being paired with...
just my 2 cents though.... this is why most questions like these are almost left unanswered...
looks like i have to try few till i get a new one and i already serached the forum before posting but couldn't get a clear answer
right now i need a good back up tool to save my contacts and sms witch support both wm5 and wm6 witch one i could use ?

Is there a HOWTO or a tutorial somewhere?

Hey guys,
Sorry for the extreme noobness of this post, but I am completely lost here. It appears that ROMeOS 4.1 is the ROM to get. But then I read that you need to install HardSPL first, then you need to pick the right radio and install that, but you need to be sure that it is the right radio for you, etc. None of this makes any sense at all to someone who has never done this before. Will I lose all the apps I've installed when I do this? If so, what is the best/easiest way to back them up so I can reinstall them after the ROM update? I also read that you need to install a keyboard fix, a screen freeze fix, and extra apps that came originally on the device need to be downloaded and installed.
I guess what I'm asking is, how do I make this $650 piece of junk that HTC won't support (they refuse to give me ROMs for it since I bought it through Amazon) into a device that is worth using with some simple step-by-step instructions? The speed and unreliability of it in its stock form for this price is completely inexcusable. I am very ready to make some donations as well.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you so much Kareem! That pretty much answered all my questions. Maybe I'm blind, but I did not see a link to that particular wiki in the stickied thread about tutorials. I think there should be a sticky in this forum with a title: HELP! I'm a noob and I need to flash my ROMS! With that link included.
Thanks again, you rock!
Oh, and I do have one last question, what radio has had the most reliability with the ROMeOS 4.1?
If you are looking for a section dedicated to n00bs, check out GWENI, linked in my signature. It was written for n00bs, by a self-proclaimed n00b.

According to Hang Tuah's (the creator of ROMeOS) post in the dedicated thread here: "I personally tried NEON 1.58.25.17, KAIS 1.65.24.36 & KAIS 1.71.09.01".
Hi, the trickiest part of the bussiness is to do the HardSPL, which will allow you to flash any ROM or radio.
Then, if you do not want to complicate your life too much, flash one of the HTC WM 6.1 official ROMs.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs
Or pick a cooked ROM that has all included (i.e. not Lite ROMs), operating system, Office, Windows Live, and a radio firmware.
hardSPL install is not tricky but its the MOST IMPORTANT thing you need to do. just follow the directions carefully and you will have no issues. Radios are personal preference BUT newer WM6.1 roms need the newer 1.65.xx.xx radios but again there is a whole thread explaining this also
enjoy your toy!
wow someone who posted with concern before bricking the device..and he did his homework as well he could before hand CHEERS!! As you'll quickly learn most noobs flash first, brick, then want the xda community to fix it without them having to do anything(like read). So I applaud you.
Heh. Thanks liquidfork. I'm pretty big into Linux and open source, so I know to read as much as I can find first and then attempt.
So, I did successfully flash ROMeOS 4.1 on my device after putting HardSPL 3.56 on it and the newest radio (forget the version offhand). It's blazing fast now. But, a small problem: When I try to restore my sprite backup, the phone will start up with the "bios" screen, but it just sits there and never boots. Now, Sprite backup complains that it needs a .sbu file that I can get from their website. I see nothing on their website about .sbu files. Is there any way to restore my stuff, or am I hosed? I do miss the HTC today screen and some of the utilities I had. I'd hate to have to roll back to an "official" ROM for this.
Thanks again for your help guys, this community is great.
Anyone? I would like to avoid reinstalling everything if at all possible. Thanks.

You cannot restore Sprite Backups from ROM to ROM. It is designed to restore your files and settings when doing a hard reset of reflashing the same ROM.
Sprite Backup does have a ROM Upgrade feature, but I've yet to see it work.
Through experimentation, I figured as much. That's too bad. I've come to find that while the ROMeOS is quite a bit faster than the WM6 that came on the device, it is very spartan. I've gotten used to the little gadgets in the HTC roms, particularly their today screen, some of the settings, and some of the utilities. I think I'm going to flash with a shipped WM6.1 from HTC and see how it works, I will try doing a Sprite backup restore on that as well, but I'm not holding my breath that it will work. Is there a huge difference in speed between the shipped HTC ROM and a cooked ROM? Better yet, is there a cooked ROM that gives most or all of the HTC functionality but is faster?

The perfect ROM is like the perfect beer. Everyone has their own opinions and taste.
However... I will say this. It is better to find a fast rom and then search these forums for the appropriate cabs for those applications you can't do without.
Not only will you only have the ops you want, but I have all those cabs on a secure digital card... then you use sashimi to load them when you perform a flash...
Because once you have done a flash... you will be doing more...
As they say on the TV about golf weenies... these guys are good... and there is always a new ROM that looks marvy.

True, I can see that now. I think the main thing I'm missing that I can't live without is being able to click in the upper right on the today screen and stop running processes from there. Especially since with ROMeOS 4.1, going into the task manager has locked up my phone twice now. If I can figure out how to get that functionality back, I think I can live with the rest. Is that functionality in the HTC home CAB that is in the extended cabs for ROMeOS? I'll probably install the CAB anyhow just to see.
Download and install this cab I've attached.
Heres a link to AllTheWays 4Shaered pages he's one of the mods on here. It has all the applications you're looking for.

Different ROMs have different reasons to be liked. It depends what you want from a ROM as the cookers have put different things in them. All of them are very good.
It's best you check out each of the ROM forums and see what best suits you.
Personally, I've installed quite a few of them to find which suits my needs the best.

My recommendation is that you READ and LEARN as most of all here made it when entered this site by first time, that´s the best way for you to know what is the best ROM.
Good luck
It's your choice
Take Tomal's V8.2 and be happy.
Or simply try all self.

Same thought
try this
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421102 not bad at all stable so far and fast
It does not exist yet
<Sorry for lengthy one.. but its one of the FAQ time and again asked and clarified>
Seriously..
A perfect super ROM that is WM6 or WM6.1 for Universal does not EXIST as device is not made for WM6 and above, whatever available is simply ported and made to work for Universal by tweeking the stuff.
The best ROM for Universal is undoubtedly the one that came with it.
I own Uni since 2005 and really have not faced any issues with the stuff that came with it and everything just works as expected.
Everything else simply works for a period till another version out or little longer till you get equally frustrated with it, something or other will be wrong with any of the cooked ROMs for simple reason that the cookers may not allocate equal amount of time/resources for developing and testing like M$ .
If you dont bother about the missing/nonworking features of a ROM that is cooked that contain most of your requirements, simply flash it and use it.
Feedback the comments/findings back through this forum, if cooker finds time or feels need to fix them, look for another version from them.
In my observation since I joined (last two months) and comments by experienced users who joined this site years back almost same and the efforts are to make Uni live longer and keep the enthusiasm of cookers and their passion to share their work and knowledge. Nothing is being claimed in response except some good thank you messages and encouraging notes and small donations to keep them singing. So its all your call as rightly disclaimed by cookers
I am not agree that "The best ROM for Universal is undoubtedly the one that came with it."
Perhaps could be the more stable but not the best, as wm6.1 comes with a lot of new features to take more advantage of devices.
Wanted: ROM WM6.x for Uni with support for Scandinavian keyboard and BT Sound
Hi all,
After scanning the forum for this topic in the last 2 days (it has been raining all weekend, and the wife is going horsbackriding, nothing else to do...), I decided to put up this post.
A lot has been said about "What is the best WM6.x ROM for Uni". I am still running on the original ROM and WM5. No complaints. Only this that I would like to see improved is the available RAM for storage. When installing software on my Jasjar, I always install on SD when possible. But som software is just screaming for installation on the device. And this makes installing new software always a challenge.
Right now this is what I have in memory:
Storage: total 43.50, in use: 39.04, free: 4.46
Program: total 50.16, in use: 28.78, free: 21.38
So I started wondering if one of the new WM6.x ROMs would improve my memory problem? I use Opera, skype and msn the oftest of all default windows programs. All other are the ones I purchased/downloaded like GPS/navigation, mediaplayers, weather, alarm, backup and wifi scanner, among other.
What I find most important when going for a new ROM, is better memory, BT sound (don't need a2dp, I have a Jabra BT8040 that does the trick for me in mono), and Scandinavian keyboard. Oh yes, and real time push email. Guess this means I need at the least AKU2.
Now this last one I am not sure if the keyboard option is supported per default. I use the sym button to get access to the special characters like ø,æ and å.
That my Jasjar gets the look of a Touch Pro 2 is a nice bonus, but not a must ;-). I am so pleased with my Jasjar, even after 4 years of daily usage, I still am convinced that there is still no worthy alternative available. Even though I have been flirting with the Touch Pro 2....
So guys, what are my options?
Well the options you have
1) use the same rom LOL
2) Use the rom's here some of them have more free storage...
i'm flashed to thingonaspring v1.1 which gives you 40.69 mb free memory after flashing.... And the one with most free storage memory is contullas rom... but after flashing to this rom you would need to do doc format every time you reflash another rom and it is bit old build now...
3)Or simply get bigger sd card
4) well about the looks there are lots of GUI software like WAD2, rltoday, home++ , SPB mobile shell, etc so use some of those themes for new looks..
Been using Tomal 8.81 for a while and so far fast and stable, recommend.
I can recommend Tomal's 8.5 too. I'm using it for several months without problems: fast and stable.

Which are lite/naked stable 6.1 and 6.5 ROMs

Which are (reasonably) stable naked/lite, without M2D and/or M3D ROMs. I am not asking which are better than other or any other kind of comparision. I am just asking, which ROM do you think is (reasonably) stable. I just just want to flash and try a few.
Thanks.

Seriously, you need to read. Almost all the ROMs out here will tell you what all it has in it!
I have the same question. Been reading and reading but still want to know which one has been found to be most stable. Thanks for the question and the reply.

Well, opinions can be allowed, I guess.
Here's mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=496555 - using the naked version and am lovin' it. Very stable and fast 6.1 ROM.
I am still not into 6.5 as the bells and whistles seem to be more in that than actual substance.

Stable one for me, wont be stable for you! It all depends on what you use your phone for and where you live! Best way to find out is keep flashing...
I'm heavy phone user - from 30 to 70 phone calls (from 1min to 25-30min per call) per day, up to 10 synch with exchange, few sms messages... Most stable ROM (I'm always returning to it) for me is Nothrills wm6.1 rom. No dropped calls, no missed calls, working wi fi... but, you cant install M3D over it, youtube mobile won't work - but you can use streaming media instead. I've upgraded only radio to 1.65.21.18 because it has better rill and can read correctly cell tower Id's. I've tried dozens and dozens of roms, but this one is the best for me. Its god damn uber stable, and fast. If you install it, install device update and download new htc home and few minor upgrades.
Please see my ROM comment here. Basically same as what you got from others.
The answer is : depend on what you use it for, and how you use it. Some ROM's might perform better according to your pattern of usage. The quest is further made complicated that once you found the ROM, you need to find which Radio & SPL that works best .. now, some seemingly less stable ROM could get very stable once you change the SPL/Radio ..
I still, at the end, suggest you give it a try, after reading some comments from the latest version of each ROM.
Asfoor told me, one AT&T OEM ROM (RUU_Kaiser_CINGULAR_WWE_3.57.502.2_radio_sign_25.8 8.40.05_1.65.21.18_Ship.exe) is very stable, and if you soft reset when it starts autoconfiguring and installing additional AT&T bloatwares, you'd get a lean, mean and stable ROM. However, I have not tried myself.
As has been said, this is subjective. Also, the ROM dev forum is not the ROM recommendations forum. Please try some of the suggestions everyone has kindly posted already.
Thanks
Dave

To ROM of not to ROM...

I have an AT&T Tilt (had it almost 2yrs) running the WM 6.1. I called HTC the other day about an update to 6.5. The technician said there was not one and that the Tilt was near end of life and that there not going to be anymore updates. If that is the case, I'm thinking of flashing a new ROM. Can anyone give any advice on what one I should use. I'm not very computer literate and want something that will be easy to use and maximize my device. It almost literally has become my brain and I depend on very much.
Also, if this posting has been placed in the wrong area please forgive my ignorance and, if possible, may the administrators place it in the correct area.
Thanks for any/all advice in advance.
Well, sadly there is no ROM called as good ROM here. It all depends on what you use your phone for and where you live!
Try reading through ROM threads, and see what suits your needs. Best advise is "Keep reading and keep flashing!". Good luck.
try abusalza new ver. cook ROM either ultimate x2v8 wm6.5 or ultimate x2v9 wm6.5...
it look nice to my kaiser n run perfectly...

Then why do you want to upgrade ? The phone does everything you want, it is easy to use, dependable, it is " your brain " , what do you think WM 6.5 is going to do for you. ?
We all flash because we all define the phrase " give me more " . We flash because enough is never enough. New is waaay better than stable or dependable ( how are those mega packages working out for y'all )
Stick with 6.1 until it is time for a new phone with WM 7 loaded.
hahaha..can't wait for wm7..

I would stick with what this guy says. Any rom you use besides stock is going to give you fits of frustration the only reason I kept flashing was for my data and internet I was not happy with the offerings of stock att rom but grew very frustrated with most of the cooked roms If I had found opera mini before all those other roms I might not have had the need to keep flashing. I have since found Android and the only time I see windows is when I am doing an update to Android. If what you have now suits you then keep it.

I'm gonna say exactly the same if you happy with stock stick with it, if you want something more special and are happy to flash untill you find a custom ROM you want then join the flashers anonymous
I'ld go to say the same, if you're happy with stock ROM, then don't change.
BUT...
If you're frustrated with what stock ROM gives you (that happened with my permanently-freezing-Herald-stck-ROM till I flashed a good ROM there), then take a surf on the ROM Kaiser pages here at xda-dev's and then try to do all the steps ( hard-SPL, radio mod's, unlock if locked, etc. ) and then, flash the ROM you think is better for you (what are you asking to a device ? I'm using it to write, calculate, draw, sketching, photo, wifi nav', gps in the forest, let my daughter play... - maybe I'ld chose a different ROM to play games or watch videos)
I think almost every ROM here is "better" than the stock ROM and you'll find a good WM6.5 if you're searching speed, reliability, good RAM... and this will give you a loooooong Kaiser life.
But, as Denco7 says, this means you are always asking "more" and more and more.

Make backup and give yourself a try with new rom`s. if you dislike - you always can return to were your begin. I believe you underestimate this possibility of kaiser.
Go for it!
I was in the same place you are, wondering if I should flash, and why. But, If I'm going to spend this much time with a device, why not pretty it up and make it a LOT more functional. The new 6.5 roms are beautiful, more functional, and easier to use, especially compared to the butt ugly 6.1, and if you're not going to buy a new device with WM7 on it then I say flash away man, you can get so much more out of your Kaiser. Have a look at TPC Elite V9. Enjoy.
StoneyBK and Marckc2
Yes, having a stock ROM capable for your needs, is enough. But if you begin to flash, and to investigate, you'll maybe acquire more and more acknowledgement about the TyTNII and WM, so that you'll be here answering and maybe cooking (and posting) your own ROMs.
Amazing work being done
It depends on what you want. I picked up my Tilt on ebay, because I wanted a PDA/phone (w/wifi). I'm a little bit of a tweaker, and wanted to make the most of this phone. I ended up here, read throught the newbie stuff, worked up the steam to flash a hard SPL, then flashed Sakajati's Hyper IV Rhodium, and was amazed; fast, functional, stable, with some flash as well. The only problem is being content. . . the developments keep ramping up. I think my tilt is farther advanced than most smart phones currently offered on ATT's upgrades. (maybe ignorance is bliss. . but I don't think so) There appear to be a number of chefs doing amazing work. Look around, read the comments. If you take the next step and like it . . . buy the chef some coffee. . .
