Different ROMs have different reasons to be liked. It depends what you want from a ROM as the cookers have put different things in them. All of them are very good.
It's best you check out each of the ROM forums and see what best suits you.
Personally, I've installed quite a few of them to find which suits my needs the best.

My recommendation is that you READ and LEARN as most of all here made it when entered this site by first time, that´s the best way for you to know what is the best ROM.
Good luck
It's your choice
Take Tomal's V8.2 and be happy.
Or simply try all self.

It does not exist yet
<Sorry for lengthy one.. but its one of the FAQ time and again asked and clarified>
Seriously..
A perfect super ROM that is WM6 or WM6.1 for Universal does not EXIST as device is not made for WM6 and above, whatever available is simply ported and made to work for Universal by tweeking the stuff.
The best ROM for Universal is undoubtedly the one that came with it.
I own Uni since 2005 and really have not faced any issues with the stuff that came with it and everything just works as expected.
Everything else simply works for a period till another version out or little longer till you get equally frustrated with it, something or other will be wrong with any of the cooked ROMs for simple reason that the cookers may not allocate equal amount of time/resources for developing and testing like M$ .
If you dont bother about the missing/nonworking features of a ROM that is cooked that contain most of your requirements, simply flash it and use it.
Feedback the comments/findings back through this forum, if cooker finds time or feels need to fix them, look for another version from them.
In my observation since I joined (last two months) and comments by experienced users who joined this site years back almost same and the efforts are to make Uni live longer and keep the enthusiasm of cookers and their passion to share their work and knowledge. Nothing is being claimed in response except some good thank you messages and encouraging notes and small donations to keep them singing. So its all your call as rightly disclaimed by cookers
I am not agree that "The best ROM for Universal is undoubtedly the one that came with it."
Perhaps could be the more stable but not the best, as wm6.1 comes with a lot of new features to take more advantage of devices.
Wanted: ROM WM6.x for Uni with support for Scandinavian keyboard and BT Sound
Hi all,
After scanning the forum for this topic in the last 2 days (it has been raining all weekend, and the wife is going horsbackriding, nothing else to do...), I decided to put up this post.
A lot has been said about "What is the best WM6.x ROM for Uni". I am still running on the original ROM and WM5. No complaints. Only this that I would like to see improved is the available RAM for storage. When installing software on my Jasjar, I always install on SD when possible. But som software is just screaming for installation on the device. And this makes installing new software always a challenge.
Right now this is what I have in memory:
Storage: total 43.50, in use: 39.04, free: 4.46
Program: total 50.16, in use: 28.78, free: 21.38
So I started wondering if one of the new WM6.x ROMs would improve my memory problem? I use Opera, skype and msn the oftest of all default windows programs. All other are the ones I purchased/downloaded like GPS/navigation, mediaplayers, weather, alarm, backup and wifi scanner, among other.
What I find most important when going for a new ROM, is better memory, BT sound (don't need a2dp, I have a Jabra BT8040 that does the trick for me in mono), and Scandinavian keyboard. Oh yes, and real time push email. Guess this means I need at the least AKU2.
Now this last one I am not sure if the keyboard option is supported per default. I use the sym button to get access to the special characters like ø,æ and å.
That my Jasjar gets the look of a Touch Pro 2 is a nice bonus, but not a must ;-). I am so pleased with my Jasjar, even after 4 years of daily usage, I still am convinced that there is still no worthy alternative available. Even though I have been flirting with the Touch Pro 2....
So guys, what are my options?
Well the options you have
1) use the same rom LOL
2) Use the rom's here some of them have more free storage...
i'm flashed to thingonaspring v1.1 which gives you 40.69 mb free memory after flashing.... And the one with most free storage memory is contullas rom... but after flashing to this rom you would need to do doc format every time you reflash another rom and it is bit old build now...
3)Or simply get bigger sd card
4) well about the looks there are lots of GUI software like WAD2, rltoday, home++ , SPB mobile shell, etc so use some of those themes for new looks..
Been using Tomal 8.81 for a while and so far fast and stable, recommend.
I can recommend Tomal's 8.5 too. I'm using it for several months without problems: fast and stable.

Hi,
There are 3 WM6 ROMs for the Universal floating around here, namely:
1st: Helmi's ROM version 1.1 (the ORIGINAL ROM where all the others originated). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291875
2nd: JWright's ROM version 2.01.08 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293902
3rd: PDAViet's ROM version 2.00.07 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294097
To be honest ALL are very good and highly stable. To save you all the reading, just try each one and soft reset immediately without installing any application. WHY? Because after a soft reset, you will most likely experience FREEZING that can only be cured by 3-4 soft resets. Each ROM had different results on the Universal. Others claim HELMI's ROM is the best and does not have the FREEZING effect after a soft reset, while others claim JWright's, and some PDAViet's ROM. If you are going to read ALL 3 threads, they all say that they experienced FREEZING after a soft reset. But, it is up to the user to pick which one is the most stable. So, to get you going, just try them one by one and soft reset, whoever does not FREEZE after the first soft reset, STICK TO THAT ROM, for most likely that is the most stable for your UNIVERSAL.
a very very good reply. i haven't tried any other roms other than jwrights .08
rom.
it's good, fast... people are saying less battery with wm6, but i wasn't on wm5 long enough to test that. i hated wm5.
i know jwright has two really good apps. usb hdd, if you copy a lot of song or anime off and on the mobile, usbhdd makes the universal look like flashdrive to your computer.
also there's task manager which closes programs when you press x instead of minimizing them.
when i soft reset i have 26 megs free program memory.
Big Thanks
thanks a lot thts made it so much easier... and again thanks 4 ur time, its people like u tht make ths place so good.. STAR
try 2.01.08 PV You'll be happy with this
I am using JWright's ROM and seems very stable. I love the flash drive program. the only bugs I have encountered are 1. the freezing after reset (every rom has this I am sure) 2. now and than I loose connection to mt bt headset and have to turn on/off to re connect. The rom is very quick and so far I have no reason to switch. Good luck and keep us posted on the rom you chose and why.
DarkForce ROM is the BEST for me!

My advice! don't use any. stick with your service provider ROM. This is my experience, YMMV. Unless of course you like to play with it and not use your phone seriously.
That's what I do but i always go back to my ISP ROM. It is stable, no hangs, no freezing and maximum amount of RAM. No useless third party aplictions, and everything just works as you would expect.
It is OK to use these ROMS for experimentation. any missing features, can be easily puchased or downloaded for free; such as html in emails (qmail), PIE a little better in ROM 6 but not much. The usb stuff is useful too but you can do the same with activesync (i.e. transfer files etc..).
that's my 2 cents...

Dear All,
I am again asking the same unanswered question. Which is the best ROM. When we say best we do not mean a ROM overflowing with so many additional software. We mean the one which is the factory one or like it and the one from which all the bugs are removed. No additional softwares needed as they can always be installed.
Can someone also tell me what were the bugs in the Ingenetics or the base ROM that everyone say he cooked and removed them. Can we have a list. Please.

well even that can be answered. But dear I just wanted to know out of all the available ones which one is 'comparatively better' now you can say based on what? so if you could have read my question it said it would a clean and fast one with no overloads and not to mention nobody would like the crashes. So like you knew that you cry when sad and smile when happy, the same way the good is the one which is fast and doesn't have bugs, was it that useless a question.
Anyways I am sorry if you got irritated at that. My intention is to learn and share from this forum
Thanks

I am no irritated I just tell you that you will not get any precise answer. Everybody will praise what he knows and uses. Also people have different priorities.
It always occures here that people come and ask what is best... There is no answer. Different people have different favourites (TNT, XDA Mobile, WRCX, NBD etc.). There are also people who says that WM5 is better than WM6.
Just read and choose and if you do not like reflash.
You will not get any final answer. The world is not so simple.

No two ways about it, it is by far the best rom availible. i have tried them all, this one is the least bugged with just the right combination of added goods that most people would use.
Some of the other roms are faster, but then again they are missing some vital modules that the Mfrazzz rom has.
try all or most of them and see which one meets your needs, they come in different sizes and flavors, so enjoy
yes you should try all of them by ur self , and test them by your self , some of them may satisfy you at last
Me personally tried NBD (bluetooth handset is not working, problem with hang phone), tried TNT (missed calls, no voice dialer) and now on XDA Mobile 3 and so far missing voice dialer as well.
I tried Nottoosmart.
its simple but then i saw that after I run it for some time it takes up all the program memory and freezes
the mfrazz's rom xm6r3 is good but then it hangs sometimes at the boot and the times goes back to 2006 after every reboot
for me tnt is the way to go no question about it. i use this for voice dialing

i loved the Black diamond 2 and TNT version 5 is the best
I have tried alot of roms
I like the Touch No Evil Rom. It never crashes and is super fast. It has everything I need and use. I have not found any thing wrong so far. The only thing is it does not have the Cube but I dont use that anyway.
Can some one suggest which Rom out there is the most stable and fastest eg: NBD 9.2 or Octavia 5 etc

Jaguar is best!
I 've tested every WM6 ROM out there. None satisfied me. So, decided to go back WM5 AKU 3.3 Generic (without T-Mobile stuff). Perhaps, what I can recommend for WM6 is either 15342 (dogfood) or 1437. So far, these are 2 most stable build by far.
Jaguar *is* the most reliable and stable.

I have NBD 9.2 rom but these days there is no new Rom from NBD so hoping for a new release.
Let me throw in my vote for Jaguar as well. It has been very responsive and I haven't encountered any problems yet.

Please read on the forum, research a little bit about Cook's preferences and style and look which one suits your own need..
Mods shall we delete this thread please???
The one that works the best for my needs is.....
Hello all,
Yes, these threads pop up about every other day or so.... and while they might get tiresome for the old hats and gurus here, it's still nice to collect a smattering of opinions as to where the user community might be leaning regarding what rom base, touch or no touch, HTC Home or HTC NOT Home, overclocking, memory free, performance, battery usage, etc... and while this is extremely specific to the device and flash method(s) used as well as the applications loaded and a slew of other factors, it is still just a loose "hold your finger to the wind" type of thing that is still interesting....
Myself? I always look to see what the latest info is on the NBD, TNT, and TNE fronts.... and when it comes time, I usually end up trying all three as well as throwing in Mfrazz and others when I see something new from them... All in all, every one of them has occupied my rom for months at a time....
Right now I'm running TNT.1457 and everything works... the apps I have bog it down a bit and I don't use Touch or HTC Home.... the memory usage is pretty good with ~21 MB free after all my Today plugins and such are loaded... battery life is a little scary but that's the way I use my phone... a Cingular 8125.... I see NBD X has come out.... been drooling just thinking about it....
So the best ROM for My Usage? I lean towards NBD and TNT the most... they seem to match my usage patterns of my phone the best....
My $.02 (and I'll probably get change)

If I had to recommend a fast stable rom with some nice extras, I would have to say TNT.1437 is one of the best. It has plenty of nice little extras and is one of the most complete and stable rom's I have used. I have been using it for the last 4 months and only switched Roms to test new releases and then always to back to the 1437 build. I personally like the TouchFlo version.

Very true, the best ever Rom I have tried so far and specially the 10mb ppool
I spent a fair bit of time re-working TNT 1437 to suit my own needs and preferences. I have relatively easily moved from TNT 1437 to 1921 and recently to 1933; each time having to make some modifications to it's right Base ROM. However since he has kept the ROMs reasonably consistent between versions my time spent modifying has decreased somewhat.
My choice of ROMs would be it's right's 1933 Base and my own customisations. Most ROMs are likely to have something you don't like or don't want and I think it is now so easily to learn how to cook your own the best option is to build your own using one of the bases available. That way it will be the 'best ROM' for you.
For me, I will be sticking with it's right 1933 base for the time being as I have had very few issues with it, plus he has worked hard integrating the original 5.2.318 drivers into it, oh and it's (currently) the latest
My 2 cents..
Andy
I use XM6r3, it has given me no problems at all. I have tried many other roms and felt this was the best for my needs. Are there faster roms? I did like tnt, I tried a couple different builds (including touchflo which I don't care for) and after configuring and installing all my normal things, XM6r3 seemed to run faster. Available memory was almost =. I do like some of the bug fixes TNT has.
You think your question should be easy to answer, but really your asking what is the best car manufacturer, who has the best tasting beer. In time you will find one you like. I initially flashed my brains out with everything I could get my usb cable on, but now, I just want something that gets it done.

The best thing that you can do for yourself is simply read up on everything involved with your wizard first. Is it unlocked? Is it G3 or G4? Does it have an IPL and SPL higher then 2.XX ? Please don't answer these questions to me. I am simply giving you some things to follow up on in your research, so that you can avoid ending up with a Brick.
Personally I have been using my own cooked Cross bred version, although I really like the look of It's Right 1933. I may have to cross breed something there.
Good Luck

Nothing too major. I modified a few .RGU files to remove some settings I don't like (Wireless on the Today screen is one I can think of), replaced the various TNT skin customisations with the default ones, replaced the Calc1 with the original Calculator, removed the themes and added my own, customised my own 'Office Mobile' folder, added battery status with my own settings, removed some unused applications and replaced them with some of my own. I replaced some of the included packages with the same ones I have that I have had continued sucess with - i.e. the various media related packages that all have reliance on certain codecs and system files that everyone seems to have issues with (Audio Manager, Voice Recorder, Streaming Media, Camera & MMS). I also included my Personal Stuff and locale settings in a custom .RGU file as well as changed the Autorun stuff to launch my own extended ROM. Oh and I have my own custom splash screens (which it took me a while to get installed and it really pi$$ed me off when I used to install a new ROM and these got overwritten..... )
Basically when I flash my ROM (or hard reset) there are minimal changes that I need to make and no software to manually install to get it back the way I like it (my VoIP settings, a Certificate and TT get installed from my extended ROM).
I am currently using the 'HyperCore' kitchen but have used others with similar results. Using the HyperCore you must follow the instructions since it is easy to miss a step and end up with a partially 'dead' Wizard.

Starting this thread was a bad idea. Sorry I didn't saw it yesterday
Reasons :
[*]This has been posted too many times before.
[*]The "Best ROM" for you is the one YOU like most. You'll have to try a few on your own to figure out which one works best for you.
[*]Everybody will give you different answers so you won't get much out of it.
[*]ROMs don't act the same on all devices. One ROM that works perfect on my device it might not work the same on yours or any other one here. You don't trust me ? Do a benchmark on your PDA..then ask someone else to do a benchmark on his PDA with same ROM and you'll see differences.

Hi guys,
I'd like to try a custom ROM again, but with the almost 100s available I'd rather ask the question - I'm looking for a normal standard Raphael ROM with just the standard apps on as it came out on the Raphael.
So basicly just a straight dump from Raphael HTC rom to go onto a Kaiser (with the neccesary tweaks of course to make it work). No other personalised apps, schemes, etc etc.
Are there something like this?
You probably can port a ROM from Raphael.

Hi guys,
I'd like to try a custom ROM again, but with the almost 100s available I'd rather ask the question - I'm looking for a normal standard Raphael ROM with just the standard apps on as it came out on the Raphael.
So basicly just a straight dump from Raphael HTC rom to go onto a Kaiser (with the neccesary tweaks of course to make it work). No other personalised apps, schemes, etc etc.
Are there something like this?

Well seeing as how the Raphael has TF3D, that narrows your search down to about 2 ROMS L26 V4 or -G-'s SE TF3D! But if you are looking for simple and easy for daily use without alot of tweaking you are not going to want TF3D! I would go with -G-'s SE TF2D or Hyperdragon Raphael build! You are going to get alot of suggetions because ROMs are different for each person, the easy thing to do is ask but the best thing to do is try them out and gain valuable exp for yourself!

He could also look at -G-'s SE TL ROM. Gives about the same functionality as TF3D but is usable on daily basis

Or the ROM I'm currently using. Or just do like we did and try them, everyone's opinion here is definitely different. YMMV
flash, flash, flash no sleep needed you will find the rom you like, then sleep

Yea, I get strange looks from my girl when I tell her I have been flashing all day!
Guys,
actually, have you paid attention to your programme memory of all those different roms. I found dutty's last one has the most programme memory 95M which I think was the reason why it is so fast and stable..
what do you think?

There are two types of people here, those that like flashing new ROMs every chance they get, and if I were a psychiatrist, I would diagnose those with ADD ( Attention Deficit Disorder candidates), and those that want a stable ROM that they would show it off to their friends, and keep it for a long time; a ROM that is reliable and fast and has many programs. The first type of people are adventurous however when they flash a new ROM, and if it glitches a bit, they get frustrated and wished they would have stayed with their previous ROM. BUT they go on and try other ROMs for hopes they come across one that is even better than their previous one they liked.
So which person are you? do you intend to flash often for the sake of flashing or you just want one that has most user programs and looks somewhat good? OK ... let us know and we'll guide you then toward the "Ultimate" ROM that would satisfies your curiosity and fits your personality.
To be honest, I've tried all Dutty's, L26, Hyperdragon, PDACorner, Garmin (3 editions) and I'm still unable to choose one !
When he was active Dutty was the best, but now all these ROMs are just beautiful, and I've been flashing for a couple of days, and still unable to make my choice.
It becomes frustrating at the end, because our Chefs are so great that they release a new ROM each week...
As someone said before (forgot who, sorry)

Hehe, very true! I've done the ROM hopping on the Kaiser and previous Vox, but is now more after the stable quick easy-to-use one ;-) Hence i actually moved back to a standard HTC ROM (but there's still that customization side that needs tickling...)
Thanks for the replies so far.. I'll the ones mentioned.

I always tend to flash that rom too, and then the cycle starts over again flashing over and over again. I can't go a weak without trying something different!

I got my tilt about 3 months ago, and have been flashing constantly! Yet to find the right one for me! All of them are good, but not perfect for me. And I dont want to cook, cuz I am too lazy! So I will keep flashing, but finding a perfect ROM is never going to happen!!

I wouldn't completely classify myself in the first category, as I know quite what I want and I know it isn't there yet. I love M3D roms and I do enjoy packing it full of features and everything. I have run L26's M3D rom for a while, and I just tried -G-'s for a day yesterday. But then many times those roms have enough issues pop up that make the phone basically unusable, and then I will back track to either a M2D rom, or even a HTC Home rom just for speed, stability, and in the case of the HTC Home roms, flawless landscape support. Then after a week or two, I start looking at the M3D roms again, hoping that there have been some fixes and work arounds and I start trying it again, and the cycle goes again!
And for what you mentioned about wishing to put the previous rom on there...Norton Ghost would be a great product for these phones!
