defroster,
I believe you'd need a very good macro lens in order for something so close up to work. I don't think there are any cellphones with good lenses (in my opinion) that are strong enough to do this.
Cheers.

Personally I´ll never use an app to scan your eye!!

plus you'd look hilarious holding your phone up 2 your eye. I do like the ACER fingerprint scan unlocker

Lol
I can imagine with my super huge universal on my eye! Hahahaha!
Yeah, digital scaner perhaps its ok but nobody will scan my eye never!

compass needed - richessegps maybe?

Hi guys! Has anyone got a compass to work on the TG01 yet? I've tried for about an hour or more to get richessegps to work but nothing, even with the aid of Franson Gate.
Basically i'm trying to find something that has the Azimuth feature on it. Thinking it could be of use for my dodgy sky dish of all things! LOL
Any assistance, ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Impossible to have a compass application because there is no hardware compass in the Tg01.
What you can do is use the GPS to act as a kind of compass. Check out this
hmmm. So once more as i originally thought... the TG isn't all it was cracked up to be after all then
Cheers for the reply fella. Think the simplest way is to go buy a proper meter for my dish and do the job right

Its a great device for the money if you got it pay as you go in the sale... but it does lack a few things the htc hd2 has, one of them being the hardware compass

Yeah, pitty it doesn't prepare my coffee too. Come on...
The compass feature was introduced just recently in wm phones, i think only hd2 and omnia2 have one. TG01 was out 1 year ago, when only iphone had one, correct me if i'm wrong. Useless in my opinion...

Wrong dude.
Nokia used to have some earliler models with compass in it, (magnetic sensors on side of the phones).
Useless?!?
I think that judging is litle bit tighted.
Why??
Compass installed in phone could be used in various ways. One of those is any kind of outdoors activity, (no need to port specialised and so sofisticated piece of "silva" hardware), but definetly not to be relied on, (even though I'm kind of tech freak, I ratherly use good old proven one fashioned gauge instrumet without batteries when it comes to keep my "b.tt" safe and in track), as any batteries powered instrument could deny cooperation in critical moment.
cheers

Useless? How many times have you launched your navigator app being stopped and the screen show your position facing the wrong side? (or the image rotates as fool...) Because only with an electronic compass included on your device this annoying behaviour can be avoided.
And only with a compass +GPS works the "augmented reality" programs, when you can frame with your camera a real object (a house, a castle, a monument...) and you can see related information on screen merged with the image...
I've googled looking for an blue tooth electronic compass to connect to our device but it seems that this doesn't exist yet.....if anyone know if this exist (or want to be the first in develop it ) please inform!
Regarding Azimuth, richessegps works ok on my TG01 (with Franson GPSGate of course):

Yeah, one-handed calling is a definite no-no. I tried my ASUS TF700T phone in a full train compartment, but all my fellow passengers were looking at me in a funny way. That might have been me almost screaming to get any reception in the microphone of the 700, though. Also, they could probably hear the conversation better than I did, the speaker being at the back of the phone and all.
Huh?

Ummm...glad that you are happy with it.
What you can do with it is:
Web browse
Read books
Take pictures
Shoot video
Write letters
E-mail send and receive
Play a game
Watch streaming video
Jot down hand written notes
Store files from a PC
...just a few things you can do
I don't believe you can actually use it for a phone.
Have fun with your device.

I've actually seen people do it. I always smirk when they try and take an artsy photograph with it -- last summer, I was witness to a group of Japanese tourists snapping pictures of the animals in a large zoo in Amsterdam (Artis, for the Dutch). Hilarious.
For the sake of information and blowing off some quirkyness: before my eye surgery, I had great eyesight and lugged around a D90 with glass in abundance on trips like that. No way I'm taking pictures with a tablet -- that would feel like being recruited into a police riot squad and getting your equipment, then noticing the rather disconcerting likeness of your baton to a large German sausage and your riot shield's resemblance to an American pizza... until you realize that they are, actually, a German sausage and a big-wheel pizza.

Thanks, regard that as a compliment.
I was surprised to learn that in some countries it is actually against the law to have your digital camera not make a fake shutter sound when photographing. That seemed jaw-droppingly stupid -- as I've always hated people with digital shutter soudns, as well as people having keypad sounds on their phones (makes dialing go "beep-beepbeeeeeepbop-booop-beepbeepbeep-baab). The latter class also talks so loud when in phone conversation that there's no place to hide on the commute. I can still hear them on the other end the train -- until it was put forward that, seemingly, a high percentage of silent cameras was used to make up-skirt photos and such. Seems I missed the point entirely in having a silent camera, since I've been making pretty "decent" pictures of flowers and animals and such. There's no eroticism in that, unless you have some specific kind of sexual deviation.
I've actually used the TF700 as a phone on several occaisions with GrooveIP. It's actually pretty nice with a bluetooth headset, but I'd never put it up to my face because a) can you imagine the nasty cheek grease? and b) no proximity sensor to turn the screen off.

That might actually be an advantage: currently it's freezing over here in Holland. If I'd put the screen brightness on high and just pretend to be on the phone with somebody, I'd at least have half of my face warmed up comfortably. I wouldn't worry that much about people looking, because they probably think I'm retarded anyway.
Well, I suppose you could do VOIP through your tab. Skype and such would be a way, but that doesn't count as a telephone.

Seriously? That's ridiculous. If you have such a problem with people taking picture up your skirt, pay some bloody attention to your surroundings, it's not hard, or simply don't wear a frikkin skirt. I never saw the point of them.
Yes, let's put the sound back on our shutters. Because it's such a good plan to use a shutter sound when photographing a herd of, say, deer. Scares the bloody sh*t out of them, forget about making a second shot. Not to mention butterflies, cats... And don't get me started on people. Taking urban snaps is pretty much pointless if everyone goes either looking straight at you to see what you're doing, or runs away because they're camera shy. Evidently laws are made by morons.
That's why I'm always in the silent coupé. No idiots on phones

Simple solution: use a real phone on your other ear - or even better: buy another TF700 and use that.
1 TF700 .... $ 700
Another TF 700 .... $ 500

Found something new about the S4 just now!!

So like many others I'm sure I've been obsessing about the new S4. I pre-ordered mine yesterday and have been doing more research ever since.
While getting "lost" on the internet usually leads me to cats instead I found out about Mobeam.
It's basically a cool new feature that allows the S4 to project bursts of light from a LED or maybe IR which a POS system or traditional barcode scanner can read.
What does this mean? It means we should be able to scan coupons loyalty cards, gift cards etc and then when at the store have the cashier just scan the top of our phone to accept the barcode.
I'm probably getting excited of something I'll never use however I like surprises...
I wonder if that will help bridge the gap with physical retailers and online coupons. I use my phone a LOT when shopping because I can always find a deal and save some money, but it can be frustrating when you get a coupon and then the cashier has to verify that it's "legit". It would be simpler if all online coupons just came with simple bar codes that can easily be scanned and matched up in the computer. Some coupons do this already, but really every one of them should.

I absolutely think it could bridge the gap, but this depends on the right environment.
1. Mobeam has patented this technology, as thus it's going to need to be affordable to license it to the masses. (Interestingly enough in Mobeams' FAQ section under investors, it lists Samsung Ventures among several others)
2. The companies that make the products we buy everyday will need to jump on board and work with retail stores and app devs to get these coupons seamlessly integrated to mobile phones.
The most important thing of all this is $$$. Basically every store already has the barcode system in place, so not having to upgrade all of those systems to use rfid or nfc (another way mobile coupons can be used) will be a huge cost savings.

Was confused for a second so I went and looked up a video on on Mobeam, and wow, I didn't realize that was the full potential you referred to. That is actually really cool! I heard the HTC One also has an IR blaster, so couldn't it do this as well? Or is Mobeam's technology patent such that 3rd party developers couldn't really copy that feature, and for now it's exclusive to Samsung?

I think it uses the notification LED on the phone. The video shows the scanner scanning the face of the phone which is where the LED is. The IR is on top by the audio jack. That leads me to believe that this could work with most phones.
I'm thinking that their patent would def protect them so as no other company can use this tech with out licensing it from them. What that costs who knows. The most interesting thing about this is that Samsung apparently invested in them, to what degree again who knows. If Samsung invested heavily then maybe they will get to have the tech for a while before the company licenses it to other vendors. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out..

The S4 has an IR sensor on the top of the phone as well (separate from the IR blaster on the front). It is used to detect hand gestures. I don't think many other phones have this technology yet.

It's probably just as simple as the tech to read a smartphone screen is really expensive. The only other option is RFID and NFC all of these would require serious investments on the behalf of retail stores. This tech allows retail locations to use their existing laser scanners.

Basically MOST scanners in stores (laser scanners I think) can't read a glass screen it just sees reflections. Newer stores with newer/different scanners can read screens like the ones they use at starbucks...but the purpose of this is it can be used anywhere with ANY scanner. Pretty genius actually!
Sure, idea is cool, but given that scanners do a pretty awesome job with barcodes it is kinda redundant (I know, I used to test them on different surfaces at my old job just for fun)

Here come tanless watches

When I was growing up my dad always wore a wrist watch. On the few occasions he ever took it off, it looked like he was still wearing something around his wrist due to the absense of the massive tan he got from working outside.
I think a wrist phone is a great idea, but wouldn't buy one unless it could actually function as a phone. I personally hate wrist watches, but would start to like them if I could remove the phone from my pocket, and I'm sure a lot of others would too.
Ha, I just got my Gear 2 and started wearing it when I take my daily walk. The first thing I thought of was that this was going to mess up my tan.

I don't understand so many things about this. You're right that this would be popular; I've read a lot of people making the same comment, but why?
A. Full Android watches with SIMs and everything have existed for years. If that's what you want why don't you have one already?
B. The whole point is to be able to to have a personal area network with a single control unit managing the experience across all of your contacted devices, not a series of independent devices each vying for your attention in a disjointed way. Think of the watch as an extension of your existing phone that you can access without having to pull the phone out of your pocket, enter your pin, find your app, and finally do an action. This also allows the watch to offload the heavy processing tasks to the powerful device you already have in your pocket 99% of the time. What good is having your phone, and a second, less powerful processor in your watch both running 100% of the operations in parallel?

The reason your logic isn't working is because you assume that people would still carry a second device. Not everybody wants a powerful device because not everybody plays games, or surfs the internet or other things that require a larger screen.
Another question similar to the one you are asking is, why would people buy a tablet when their phone can already do everything and more than it can do.
If there was a choice between a pocket phone with an optional wrist device, or a wrist phone with an optional reading device, a lot of people would go for the smaller, highly mobile wrist phone.
It wouldn't interfere with mobility and it would be readily available.
Something else that may be bogus, but would probably factor into some people's decisions is that it would distance the RF source from reproductive organs.

will it really be affected? i mean all the gears are out there... and there are to be worn and designed most of the time and probably under scorching sun?
I also thought this seemed like a good idea, Android on your wrist. So I bought a cheap one to see.
I got one from Chinavasion(can't posts links yet obviously). The one I got was the "3G Android Watch Phone 'FineWatch' - MTK6577 Dual Core 1GHz CPU, 2 Inch IPS Screen, 4GB ROM, 8GB Additional Memory" because it seemed to have be biggest screen and the best hardware of the no-name ones.
But the android version is horrible on the device, and I kinda wanna install a new one. Watch can't log on to my google account, due to it not understanding the 2-step vertification procedure. And it has no Google play, browser doesn't show any images when browing play.google.com etc. All-in-all horrible, is there a way to fix this by installing a more normal version of Android? Like without bricking it or using the old version?
Can someone point me in the right direction to make this watch the best I ever wore?

It looks cool and unique but I don't get it? Like why would I want to give up screen real estate from left to right and still have the same height? This is going to be a failure of a product for the simple reason it doesn't solve any size issues and has a smaller screen real estate.
However that ui looks promising. Essential should work on a foldable phone that turns into a watch. Just think if you could take the screen they have in those photos, wrap it around your wrist as a watch, and unfold it into a phone that looks like the photos they have...
I think there will be a day where you store your phone on your wrist not your pocket when it's not in use. The technology is almost caught up to implement that and whoever does it first correctly will be the next iPhone or Razr.
Haven't seen it. I love my PH-1, but this... thing? Looks weird, the screen format makes no sense, and the HUGE camera bump on the back is an instant turn-off. I dunno, it could be good, probably too early to tell, but so far, just looking at the prototypes... no.
Here's more from Rubin

I had the PH-1 and I loved it and I hoped that the new one would be better. But this one is just stupid... (((
The PH1 form factor is possibly the closest to perfect in recent years, IMO. Sure, there could be small improvements, but the screen height and width make it a very 'pocketable' handset--not too tall, like the Pixel2/3XL and a slew of other with only marginally more screen estate.
The PH2? It looks wrong, but perhaps isn't as tall as it seems. The main issue will be how the interface works and I can't quite conceptualise how it will manage to do a whole host of things i use on my phone, not least of which is simply reading print news media--3 words a line is likely to become irritating

Exactly! I absolutely love the PH-1 form-factor. I am not a fan of big phones, and always look for something with a reasonably small screen, but a good resolution. I am also not obsessed with bezels, and the bottom chin actually makes it more convenient for me to handle.

yes, that remote!
Been needing to say this since speculation of another Essential phone started (year+ ago?):
Even if a second phone comes out, why on Earth would they call it PH-2?!
Don't people see, PH-1 ... PH-one ... PHone ... Phone.
A PH-2 would ruin the joke.

Yes, but since we have no idea how this device would actually be called (IF it materializes at all), people just use that as a "placeholder" for the name....

Yeah, fair enough!
I'm reminded of those that shorten Xbox One to xbone. I still read that as X-bone.

There is a rumor that was semi intentional and I kind of believe it.
I mean YouTube channels are already pointing out Series X: Sex.
The Xbox brand is one of the worst naming schemes of all time. If you search "Xbox" online you might get a Xbox (original), 360, one, or soon the new "Xbox".
Good luck selling that to kids when the average parent won't know the difference between any of them.
The Xbox brand is what they should use in marketing courses as what NOT to do.
