Rooting T-Mobile MyTouch 3g? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Well, the presale of the MyTouch starts today for T-Mobile. When I found out that it had more RAM than the G1, I started thinking that perhaps the loss of the physical keyboard could be worth 90mgs of RAM. There's just one thing holding me back from pre-ordering... according to Haykuro, it can't be Rooted because of the SPL. I haven't seen any threads about this (and I did search), and haven't heard it before, but I'm pretty damn sure that Haykuro knows what he's talking about. Has anyone looked into this? Is there a way around it? I mean, the SPL not being able to be flashed would be a pretty damn big roadblock, but perhaps the collective intelligence of the devs here could think of something?

There is no way to root the Mytouch at the moment. And there are a few threads discussing this already. No access to the phone in Fastboot mode. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution soon.

well when they do then i will buy it im happy with my g1 yes the My Touch is a lot nicer looking but it lost a lot of practical usage factors like the keyboard which was why i got rid of my crappy Samsung behold in the first place not to mention the reason why i didnt buy an iphone(among many other reasons.)

mytouch root links?
can you post the links where there discussing rooting the mytouch

Isn't the myTouch 3g basically the same as the Sapphire?
So wouldn't http://android-unleashed.com/tag/root-mytouch-3g work for the myTouch as well?

mytouch
there are different i believe the hardware is even differ the main problem is the radio and spl are diffrent while im not to sure how differ or really what that means as far as rooting it, that is the problem

the mytouch has 192 mb Ram just like the G1......... Its the Htc branded magic and the rogers that have the 288Mb Ram...

Really? Can you link to the page saying that the MyTouch is only 192? Every where that I've read, it is listed as being the same as the Magic/Sapphire as far as most of the hardware are concerned. I know there's a different Radio, to make 3g on T-Mobile possible, and a different SPL, which blocks Rooting, but I was under the impression that those were the only differences between a MyTouch and a Magic. I've held both and they certainly look the same. Why would HTC or T-Mobile manufacter a device with less RAM, when they already have a model with 288?

It's a re-branded Google Ion with different SPL and firmware. The Ion only has 192MB of RAM and has 1700/2100 for T-Mobile 3G.
I think all "Google Experience" aka Google branded Magics (myTouch 3G, Google Ion, and Vodafone Magic) have 192MB of RAM while the HTC branded Magics have 288MB of RAM (Rogers Magic, TW Magic, and etc). The Google branded Magics have 32B board while the HTC branded Magics have 32A board.

Guess that is the deal breaker for me...not rooted yet and only 192MB...

Hykuro
do we need to start another fund raiser for the mytouch 3g

Yep, that really made my decision for me. Definitely a no go. Why would anyone switch? More internal space is not worth the loss of the VK and no root. Boo on that.

Too many misconceptions are flying around about the mytouch.
True it isn't rootable yet.
False it has exchange in the version tmo employees have currently. Also it doesn't currently have sherpa.
All stores I know of have working demos in all colors in addition to 1 extra assigned to their htc "champion".
The device shows 288mb of ram which I don't think they will lower for a final release eventhough people are saying it. Has 192mb they are wrong. It has more ram than that free on the device alone when you look at the memory on the device and that's after using some up for programs.

So does anyone have the Final release yet to know what the SPL & The ram is.. Or is everyone basing it off of different pre production devices..

the phone has 192Mb Ram Period.... It was comfirmed by an administrator at the tmobile forums.....
So anyone saying it has 288MB ram is dumb and should do some more research...

for the record, the Ion has 288. i have one in my hands right now.
and despite what the administrators for tmo forums say, we'll wait until the production units ship. i've talked to too many "reps" and "experts" that know far less than i do about tmo to believe anything just on someone's word.

Looks like it has a lot more than 192mb

Okay so can someone please advise if the Mytouch 3G can be rooted with Hero rom and run smoothly....or will it run sluggish? or does it ultimately depend on how much crap you store on it?

I Think thats the Onboard Memory which is known to be 512..
Also @ minogue - My wife is a T-Mo rep & There internal info says that it has 192.. There internal info also says that the new Dash 3g Has Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 (in case your not familiar with winmo pro its for touchscreen devices ONLY & the dash is not a touchscreen device).. That doesn't exactly go to show accuracy in what there system says..
I Am hoping for the 288 & Regardless of what the internal docs say there are reports of the Google Ion (only other sapphire to run on the 1700 band) & the pre production MyTouch 3g's having 288.. So we will see in a week or so when the employees that didn't get the pre production units will be getting the 1st post production units..

That's the amount of ROM (storage) after boot (512MB total).

HTC Kaiser

hi folks! what I wanted to know is; what do you think about the HTC Kaiser?
As soon as I can get my hands on it, i'm gonna buy one.
I have the HTC Tytn now for 3 months now but the kaiser looks better.
Not that the specs are so different than the tytn.
But the kaiser does look cooler and..it has gps! So let me know what you think of it!
note: hope there will be a htc kaiser section on XDA!

Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we've seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let's start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it's a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY 'board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn't make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I'm so in love with this device, we'll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser's highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below!
-
Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser's RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you'll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you're not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN's and does an excellent job at navigating.

Initially, yes. But after a few months it probably drops to half.
I'm curious how this compares to Nokia's E90 which is expected shortly.
Edit: the same site lists the E90 at USD 1299.99. Froogle on the other hand lists a couple of sites asking about USD 800 for the E90. So translating this to the Kaiser: 800 / 1300 * 1900 ≈ USD 1,170.00. Hmmm... still quite expensive.
Classic Mike!
Chuck is always on the job...

A little update on the Kaiser front:
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/06/14/htc-kaiser-delayed-till-august/
I wasn't sure what to make of it until I got a text message earlier today, followed by a phone call about 30 minutes ago. I've been going on about the Kaiser to my friend, who does some work for HTC, and guess what he was working on today?
Yup! Loading AT&T roms onto some Kaisers so they could be demoed.
He fished around for some info for me. Word from his supervisor is that the qualcomm ban isn't a big deal and that 'they' (HTC/Qualcomm??) would find a way around it. Obviously they must have if AT&T is looking into the phone already.
I hope this isn't old news, cause its new to me.

HTC Bravo

I couldn't find a topic on this, searching HTC Bravo, "HTC Bravo" and just Bravo came with nothing.
Is anyone else looking forward to the bravo? It's basically a Nexus one with hard keys, 720p recording and Sense UI.
Personally, I prefer Sense UI to stock android, even though the hero is still on 1.5 I don't see how in any way Stock Android 2.0/1 offers any better or nicer features than Sense UI.
The Bravo should be announced next week and come out in March. I can't wait for it to be honest and will be upgrading from my G1 ASAP.
The Bravo will be released in Barcelona Monday or Tuesday.
It will get a new name, can't tell what tho.

100%, Just keep following my Twitter
I heard it was going to T-Mobile UK but what about T-Mobile USA.
I like the Nexus One but that stupid plan you need with it to get it at $180 on T-Mobile is what I hate.
Hopefully the Bravo will be around the same price and maybe even cheaper
I also take the Sense UI over stock android. I mean look at the Hero's ancient Android 1.5 Sense UI.
*7 screens
*Very pretty and helpful widgets with cool animations
*Multi touch in browser, gallery, and mail before Google pushed it to the Nexus One (excluding the mail)
*FLASH in browser.
*LOADS of eye candy. I mean everything I go into has eye candy. Even the darn menus.
If HTC SENSE can run smooth on my old MT3G with only 192 mb of RAM and a 528 mhz processor just think how an Android 2.2 HTC SENSE will run on a 512 mb RAM and a 1 ghz processor.
Plus the Bravo will come with all the goodies of Android 2.1
*Newer Market
*Google Maps with Multi touch and navigation
* The other goodies that I can't remember.
HTC will probably make their own version of the 3D gallery and maybe even make their own version of live wallpapers.
Plus all those Nexus One users will want a port of Bravo.
Which is harder to port: Stock Android or a Custom UI Android?
Custom UI is harder to port than Stock Android.
Am hoping this will come out on o2-uk ASAP. As for the leaked brochure saying "april" things can change since then and all sources seem to point at March.
It sure does look like the Nexus, but with a few other features.

Am I looking forward to it, you bet I am. When I saw the specs for the HTC HD2 last year, I was salvating for the whole of the UK. But then you had the well documented camera glitch et al, and the shear size of the handset in my hands just put me off. Alas, then came news of the "Bravo", and it looks like the 3 year wait for well specked smartphone is almost at an end - I can't believe I've turned my nose up at the many offerings that have been cast my way - diamond 1&2, Samsung Omnia 1 & 2...the list goes on.

THIS IS THE LEGEND.
All I got to say....F**k the Nexus One. With the Bravo (same specs but looks SOOOOO much sexier and has HTC sense) It will officially go to a carrier without getting a lame ass plan or you can buy it unlocked. Same with the Legend (A powerful phone but it is a budget phone. Great for it's price but It is not going to be weak like the hero or the g1/mt3g. More RAM and a better processor.) It will officially go to a carrier without getting a lame ass plan or you can buy it unlocked.
I heard it was going to T-Mobile UK and at least one (if not both) of the phones is going to T-Mobile USA.

Can't Decide on what Android to get. Any ideas?

Quite simply i have decided its about time i get myself a new 'high' end android phone. I have owned the HTC Magic (32b) for some time now and while i do like it very much i feel its a bit week when it comes to multi tasking and new versions of android i feel arnt completely stable on it as they just are not built for this old phone.
So anyway its time for me to pick a new phone, but im just not sure which to go for. I like the look of either the Nexus one, Motorola Milestone or the HTC desire all for there own reasons.
Both the Nexus One and HTC desire to me seem to be pretty much the same apart from that the Nexus One has already got froyo and that the HTC desire has sense UI and optical track ball thingy.
While the Motorola Milestone i like very much for its qwerty keyboard and i believe it has the best GPU (am i right?). The Motorola is also the cheaper of the phones which is always a plus.
So my question to all of you is what are your thoughts on the different phones and which would you pick? are there any other features i should take into thought? or other phones?
I like the Nexus One and the Desire.
I forget it the Desire has a snapdragon processor as well? If yes, I'd go for that one. The body is really really sexy and the optical trackball is a step ahead of the trackball on the n1.
However, I really like the N1. IMO it's one of the most underrated phones out there. Battery life is 12 to 14 hours moderate / light use. One thing to be aware of, the speaker is tiny and the phone doesn't ring very loud compared to the Blackberry I had before.
As far as I remember the HTC Desire lacks the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA. I don't know what exactly you are planing to use your new phone, but I (considering the huge amount of time I spend internet browsing), I'd take the Nexus One.
I'd also take into consideration the fact that the Nexus comes with a bit more powerful battery than the HTC Desire. I own a HTC Magic too. Every time I keep my wi-fi connection on for more than 2-3 hours, the battery runs out and the phone shuts down, which can is sometimes very annoying.
thank you all for your input ^^ i have noticed that four people have clicked 'other' it would be nice if you do this to post something telling me which phone you would rather have
I think the Samsung Galaxy S is going to be the new king of android... I have the same problem - can't make my mind what to get.
If I would go for Android I certainly will wait for this one...

IMO the best Android phone is the EVO 4G, if you´re on Sprint. It all depends on what you are going to do with your phone, do you really need the 1 Ghz processor and such HIGH-end specifications?
Hi there
First off, I came across this info while researching phones a while ago (~6 weeks ago), but I'm pretty sure that this is STILL the case.
You mentioned the Motorola Milestone as a potential candidate. I would recommend you NOT get this phone. This is because while the Motorola Droid can be rooted and use ROMs, be overclocked (to 800MHz! get that one lol) etc, the Milestone's bootloader is locked down by Motorola which means that you can NOT install 'custom' ROMs on it, you're stuck with the stock ROM (at least until Motorola actually decide to open up the bootloader).
It's not a matter of waiting for someone to crack it either; apparently they've signed the bootloader and not released their signing keys (sorry, I'm not sure of the technical details), which makes it pretty much impossible to load up anything because it will check the signature before loading anything.
So while I don't really have a real suggestion, I may have narrowed down your choices. Do investigate thoroughly if the next phone you buy really is 'open' or just 'open for marketing/advertising purposes'!
Happy hunting

thanks dude, i think that pretty much knocks the milestone out of the running, got to love my custom roms
Sure np
Do make sure your next phone doesn't have such a stupid restriction.
I'm looking for a new phone as well, even though the one I have is perfectly fine and zippy (HTC Hero GSM with the Cronos ROM) haha
The one thing I AM sure of is that I definitely require a physical keyboard! Touchscreen isn't good for hooves like mine lol
Guess I'll watch this thread too, for suggestions
I noticed you wrote milestone instead of droid.
do not get the milestone.
If you can, try to get an unlocked droid (I for one need a keyboard), but don't get a milestone since motorala locked it up making it unrootable (so far).
besides that I'd get a N1, I've played with a friends and it's pretty sleek, very fast and all around great

As im in the UK i cant easly get a droid, and alot of the ones on ebay that say they are a droid are the milestone, is there any easy way of telling them apart?
I was a former milestone user, and the draconian attitude of Motorola regarding the bootloader led me to swap it for an HD2. Now I am in rom-flashing heaven. The HD2 is miles ahead of the milestone in terms of customizability and usability.
BUt to answer your question, AFAIK, Droid = CDMA while Milestone = GSM. So if you are using a GSM network in UK, a Droid is out of the question, and you can only use the (locked) Milestone.
Im also in the same bandwagon, observing the android landscape, looking for what phone to get (looks like android for the HD2 is gonna take awhile). Since HTC has yet to announce a GSM version of the EVO, the Samsung Galaxy is looking MIGHTY tempting. Cant beat a 4-inch super AMOLED screen.
if you CANT wait, then just get the Desire or the Nexus One. Im more partial to the Desire myself. I like Sense.

the TMobile MyTouch Slide is suppose to have a great physical KB. I hated the Hero's KB, in fact that's partly why I didn't get it. I tried the KB on the iPhone (amazing KB) and on the HTC EVO (really, really nice) and you'd be surprised how you get used to it.
Hope that helps.

That's exactly right.
And since there aren't any CDMA-based networks in the UK, the Droid isn't an option at all.
In the UK, I can't really see why anyone would take the Nexus One over the Desire.
All you do is end up limiting yourself to Vodafone with their crappy web bundle and poor 3G coverage.

I've used the iPhone's keyboard too, and I also thought it was much better than the Hero's.
Still, I think I've pretty much had my fill of touch keyboards hehe

New HTC devices plus a tablet at MWC

tablet looks very good
Well.. I'm really disappointed. I mean REALLY. When you compare the hardware it's almost nothing new.
HTC Desire S vs HTC Desire
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3776&idPhone2=3077
I'm a HTC fan since many years and it's hard for me to say this, but HTC is really behind now and is only trying to make money and sell us BULL****!!!
Just see the comparison and you will know what I'm talking about... minor changes. NOT EVEN THE PROCESSOR HAS CHANGED!!!
The Incredible S is also nothing new under the sun. Not even a dual-core processor... No 1GB of ram.
Seriously, HTC, WHAT THE ****?
The hardware specs of Galaxy S II can eat HTC's newest devices for breakfast.
And HTC really made a big mistake because right now it's no more about the software, it's the hardware that matters. Android is almost the same on all devices and with a community like XDA everything (costumization) is possible.
RIP HTC, I will never buy a device from you anymore.
I feel pretty let down by HTC's showing at MWC.
I was expecting an Atrix/Galaxy 2 rival (aka the Pyramid) and they show us unibodied versions of phones that have been out since last year with slightly bigger batteries running Gingerbread.
I don't know whether to jump ship to the Atrix or to wait and see if they produce the Pyramid at a later date.
I'm not particularly interested in the Tablet, and if I was to get one i'd get the Moto Xoom or Samsung Galaxy 10.1 as they are pretty much the same as each other anyway with stock Honeycomb, rather than a massively skinned and shelled Gingerbread device.
HTC needs to stop trying to insist upon making Sense the core product they are selling and start making some big leaps in hardware, and soon..
Fail
I was expecting a dual core android 2.4 phone with physical keyboard and a android 3.0 tablet. None arrived...
Very dissapointed.
Was hoping for the Pyramid - something to rival the Galaxy S2 in terms of hardware specs.
I really want a HTC and was waiting for this news to determine how to proceed.
If you want the technology the Galaxy S2 seems to be the handset to get, but Samsungs TouchWiz just doesn't even compare to HTC's sense.
For me its the Desire S for now.....I need Sense in my life.
WHERE IS THE PYRAMID!!!!!!
remind me again why i should get rid of my N1?
oh yeah nothing... HELLO!!!! HTC!!! are you even trying anymore?
the only thing turing me off of the Atrix was the possible locked boot loader, and wanting to see what HTC was about to push out....
now that we have one thing off the list.... i feel that i may be leaving HTC for a while until they get their act together... maybe thats what they need... sales not to climb like they have, an actual slap to their bottom line that says consumers are done buying the same thing over and over... but sadly, even with the numbers we have, until the masses relize this, HTC sale numbers will continue to rise and no real reason for them to change...
in their eyes, if it aint broke, why fix it?
for me, its a total dissapointment.
i mean WTF ARE THEY THINKING
its the same ****.. AGAIN
there is still no phone that would be a REAL upgrade to my HD2..
i hoped for a new flagship.. i hoped it so bad..
i hoped for something that would frag all others away.. but they stay at the same level.. just to get even more money out from the same old **** >.>
only good thing of htc this time was the tablet. but thats it, and i guess they will overprice it, so i won't get it
i'll stick to my HD2. **** you HTC, u idiots
Sent from my HD2
like all of you, I'm very disappointed... where is my Pyramid!!?
Meh, totally under-whelming.
Build quality of the Desire S sounds nice, and i wouldn't mind having one, but it's not specced any higher than my N1 and of course is full of 'Sense' crap which i'd have to nuke from orbit before using the thing.
im really thinking of totaly switching to moto now
the atrix and the xoom tab are just too cool...
and more sexy.
Whats up Guys @ HTC
Every Smartphone producer shows their flagships at MWC this week, and HTC???
Not even one word about the Pyramid is in planning?
Sure we have to wait...
(it was the same with the Snapdragon 1GHz Processor, the TG01 was 4 months before the HD2 out)
And im pretty sure the wait was worth it!
So now we can buy soon (non HTC ):
- Many Dual core (even different Processors) Phones
- 3D Display Phones
- Ultra bright Display ( 700 Nit - Daylight usable) Phones
- Ultra thin and light (Dual Core) Phones (~8,5mm)
And whats coming from HTC? - only a "Sense" with streaming, and an "new" Facebook Button
Where is the Successor of the HD2
Come on HTC, you have to be the carriers of technology, dont get lost in Software ...
Phones are still made out of Hardware!!!
Give the people a Dream - a Dream we want to wait for :
Oh, and this will be such an Dream:

The Galaxy S II has some fantastic hardware, but I decided because of the complaints people have about software updates etc that I would wait and see what HTC had on offer before making up my mind. Having seen it I have to wonder what exactly are they thinking? Sure they're well built phones, but why do they feel satisfied in pushing out fairly old hardware.

Of course. It may well be that they thought a more reasonably priced (if indeed they are reasonably priced) phone would be just what the market needs. It just seemed remarkably out of place for them to wax lyrical about phones that are remarkably similar to their current generation except with new software.
HTC should really make Sense downloadable through market as a launcher instead. I just hate it. It's ugly and doesn't really make a difference for me.
Regarding the new phones there is nothing really impressive. The new Tegra2 dual core phones that are coming out (LG and Motorola) will most likely blow any of those HTC phones away. I believe they also have integrated geforce graphics so nothing should really be an issue on those phones.
My Wildfire have been a disappointment so I wouldn't even consider a HTC phone again unless I was 100% certain I could make it good.
One devices than can beat the Desire HD?
I stopped paying attention to smartphones a long time ago.
But the HTC Flyer actually catches my attention as a useful Android tablet for once. No Honeycomb is a bummer (Android is already too fragmented!), but it does have an N-trig DuoSense digitizer and apps to use it with. More than I can say for a certain other US$800 Android tablet.
Maybe I won't have to keep looking specifically at Windows Tablet PCs for a viable pen and paper alternative.
Bummer! HTC where's the Pyramid and some Innovative devices??

Chinese phones with android

Hi everyone,
i want you to tell me if you have a chinese phone (with android of course) and what do you think about this, i mean:
chinese phones costs much less in comparison to other brand phones, and very often chinese phones have great hardware, for example my phone have 1ghz dual core processor, 8mpx (real) camera, 4.3 inch screen, and lots of other things.
i paid it around 150-200 euros (it was a gift). i don't know really how much i had to pay if it was samsung or other.
but the problems arrives with software: mine has android 2.3.5, there are some chinese app that i can't delete, absolutely no updates.
and the biggest problem: the root. it's a kind impossible to root my phone. i have the t9199+, i tried with z4root, superoneclick, gingerbreak, it doesn't work. there is a guide here in a forum but the links are broken and i'm waiting for the user to give new links. hoping he will be online soon.
so, why if this phones have great hardware everyone prefers to buy samsung or lg or others phones? (also i do, i have other phones, 3 nokia, 1 blackberry and 2 lg)
why software developers don't do anything for this phones?
lots are similar and with similar hardware so i think that the root can be possible with every phone if tested on one.
well tell me your opinion about this phones, why people don't buy it, why developers don't develope for it, and if you have a method how to root my divice (i'm sure it's not in the right section for this last question and i think nobody will reply to that but hope is the last to die LOL)

I once bought a phone from China, it was suppose to be Iphone 3g. Got the phone, was using windows mobile with a little bit of apple os. Camera was 1.3mp although it said on the box and around the camera 5mp. NO 3g network only edge. 4.3inch screen did not have multi touch. Take a pic with your phone and then check the details of the pick under resolution and post your pixel size. Also the real brand phones has HD recording.

well it's true, chinese copies of iphones or samsung or other phones are very poor.
i think anyway that android can't lie, so if in the settings of the camera is written 8mpx/5mpx and other options, it's true.
i have a doubt about the processor but without root i don't know how can i know what processor it have. but using the phone, i think is a good processor, never lags, the phone became hot when playing or webbing but it's good. do you know how can i know what processor it have?
the camera, trust me, it's 8mpx. yes it's not a good 8mpx but photos are quite good.
It is not hard to make the info state it has something when it doesn't. I can make your phone state it is connected at 10g or that it has a 5gh processor.
One of the biggest issues with china bases phones is that they don't run official software. Take yours for instance. If you look at Google source code page you will not find android 2.3.5. This is also the reason for your issues with root. China based phones have a lot of recoding that makes alot of things not work with them as they don't understand the OS version.

generally, chinese phones are very very poor. its rare to find a good chinise phone
recently , chinese phone become popular in several countries, include mines.
its right to think, when you buy android phone, you have to know how to root it. if you dont know how to root your phone. try some other phone similiar to yours. for example the variant, or model, because sometimes, several brand would use the same hardware then they repack it with their brand.
and its also helpful, when you try to search the tips over china's phone development site. just translate it to your language.
hope this tips will help......

You,re right but I think that phones does not have hardware and software support, so if you want one of those, first of all make sure you can get a compatible battery for your device after 4years and update your android os. for example I bought a cheap chinese tablet but its original gingerbread rom could not be updated until now.
As in most cases, you get what you pay for.
Apple is, of course the exception to that rule, but if you pay too little as happens with the Chinese knock-offs, they bite you later on.

Now correct me if im wrong but my old samsung galaxy ace,. and my wifes samsung galaxy s2 both had 2.3.5 and were official. Its is also listed on googles pages???
Huawei u8800 is good but it lacks software support :/
Not so bad.
The quality level of Chinese phones has gone up quickly in the last few years, and it seems that Android might have something to do with it. Now we don't have to worry about some weird and wonky OS on our phones. Hardware-wise, it seems that they are getting better as well. I speak from experience because I bought an Android phone recently and it seems to be a rock-solid piece of machinery (so far).
Now, if you go and buy something that is being marketed as a knock-off, you get what you pay for. But if you get something that's "this is our Android/Win phone, we're not trying to scam you" then you should be okay. Ainol's a Chinese company and they make a fine tablet.
I'm in China so it was easy for me to just go down the street and check some of them out. Buying online might be a bit more of a problem. It's true that you're not going to get the post-sale support.
My one problem: finding out what hardware my phone has so I can mod it.
never buy china phones.
Did some research and just bought the THL w5 from their own wholesaler.
They're a brand that are trying to sell internationally, and are actually doing a pretty great job of selling standup hardware.
They're also constantly updating and bugfixing on even their legacy devices
