hi folks! what I wanted to know is; what do you think about the HTC Kaiser?
As soon as I can get my hands on it, i'm gonna buy one.
I have the HTC Tytn now for 3 months now but the kaiser looks better.
Not that the specs are so different than the tytn.
But the kaiser does look cooler and..it has gps! So let me know what you think of it!
note: hope there will be a htc kaiser section on XDA!

Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we've seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let's start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it's a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY 'board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn't make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I'm so in love with this device, we'll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser's highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below!
-
Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser's RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you'll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you're not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN's and does an excellent job at navigating.

Initially, yes. But after a few months it probably drops to half.
I'm curious how this compares to Nokia's E90 which is expected shortly.
Edit: the same site lists the E90 at USD 1299.99. Froogle on the other hand lists a couple of sites asking about USD 800 for the E90. So translating this to the Kaiser: 800 / 1300 * 1900 ≈ USD 1,170.00. Hmmm... still quite expensive.
Classic Mike!
Chuck is always on the job...

A little update on the Kaiser front:
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/06/14/htc-kaiser-delayed-till-august/
I wasn't sure what to make of it until I got a text message earlier today, followed by a phone call about 30 minutes ago. I've been going on about the Kaiser to my friend, who does some work for HTC, and guess what he was working on today?
Yup! Loading AT&T roms onto some Kaisers so they could be demoed.
He fished around for some info for me. Word from his supervisor is that the qualcomm ban isn't a big deal and that 'they' (HTC/Qualcomm??) would find a way around it. Obviously they must have if AT&T is looking into the phone already.
I hope this isn't old news, cause its new to me.

I think the delay is meant for the US not for Europe.
But thanks for the INFO
Anyone know for sure whether it'll support SDHC cards properly?

Hi,
Having used Tytn II for 6 months now, I guess there wont be any update regarding the display drivers from HTC, which is the main cause of annoyance. I am looking for suggestions/advice for buying something better then this PDA.
Thanks
If you don't mind leaving Windows, you should get a Nokia N96.
Or if you don't want to leave windows, you can get an HTC X7501. The only problem with that one is that its kinda big due to the 5" screen.

hey, i was kinda in the same boat as you, and ended up buying an n95-4 (the 8gb version). i used it for a few days, and now i'm back to my tilt. the biggest reasons are lack of html in ur emails, no qwerty, and no touchscreen. never knew how important those two are to me. wm also has a lot of free programs, and you dont have to deal with getting them signed (wtf is that??) anywayz, while we ***** and moan about lack of drivers, in all actuality, i think we have the best phone on the market...

ya thats one thing i hate about the n95-4, it feels like any crappy cheap phone. its light, not very solidly built (search for slider issues on these phones) and the entire layout of the phone feels the same as any free nokia... now to sell this phone, anybody wanna buy a brand new n95-4
I'll trade you an unlocked Wing for it.
Why is everyone forgetting to mention the world famous iPhone!!!
LOL
ha lol, na thats aiight, i can sell it for $600, easy... bunch of nokia freaks out there
Yea the iphone is good if u dont mind losing your QWERTY and u want something simple. i would compare it to a sidekick on speed. But not a bad phone overall
WOW!!! I was being sarcastic.....
I bought a N95 8gb, really nice piece of gear (would be even better if I could learn how to use the damn thing) great media functions BUT!!!!! there is now a new learning curve, wheres the the stick??? there is no stick no qwerty I have gotten use to win mobile and and using a stylus and qwerty keyboard...on the plus side Movie playback and games are Smoooooooooooth
this is the one
That is a harris briefcase phone
I used to build these in 1986, I always liked the Fujisu phones better. If someone tried to carjack me I could hit them over the head with the handset then call the cops to let them know someone was lying in the road.

My Ipaq 614c has just been delievered. Replacing my TyTn II because it was giving me low EDGE speed connection problem.
Will write a mini review in this thread after I have configured it and have used it for a few days.
Hey guys
I won't bore you with a long story so here goes the short one: I need a new phone, I currently have an Acer M900, I could buy another M900 but why not try another?
must have KEYBOARD!
Current choices and ruled out:
Omnia 2 - b7whateveritisbuthasakeyboard - No diferent to my Acer and no chefs
Milestone/Android - serious concerns over its keyboard, market access for non-network locked. Ruled out.
TP2 - lesser model than my current Acer and its HTC which i refuse to buy having been burnt several times.
So, are there any other top of the line phones with a keyboard i haven't considered?
Thanks!!!
Have you looked at the Sony Ericsson X2?
But only the TP2 has XDA developer support

Not heard of an X2 so will take a look but I know the X1 was somewhat of a disaster and also made by HTC.
omniapro b7610. its basically an omnia2 with a keyboard. (slightly smaller screen and internal storage...)
LG Expo (IQ). 1Ghz Snapdragon and wm6.5.
and yeah the xperia x2. looks really sweet but using old processor. not made by HTC.

The X2 does look good but you have just said my very first glance - old slow processor.
Any idea when the X10 is out? That looks spanky...
^just read on gsmarena it will be available in the uk next month.
start or end or no idea? I'm only back in the country for the first few days...... argh!
arghhh!!!
Very pricey and April
X2 will be awesome, and it's coming soon in the States (not sure about elsewhere).
The Expo too is a good phone for sure, what with Snapdragon and a nice keyboard.

Yes but a VGA front camera!
And for the KB we should test it before having any 2nd thoughts...
Peace,
Still doesn't change the fact that the keyboard is not permanently attached - no matter how it "feels". Its not going to be with me all the time and a lot of that time will be "I wish I had my keyboard with me right now"

Also, I am not too fussed with that big blob in the middle of the keyboard.
hey Devs... i would like to have a minute of your time...
i have an idea... in market (not android market... LOL) we can find a TV-out adapter for some phones from htc...
how about develop a way to add this option to the Android OS...
since the adapter uses the mini usb port...
what you devs have to say about that???
i think it whould be great to show pic and videos that way...
wow, i'm glad you got everyone's attention... now if it was only in the right forum, maybe android development (not G1 android develoment)... especially since AFAIK the dream doesn't do a TV out over ext-miniusb.
sorry... i've posted here cause i have a g1... and like a lot the work of the devs here...
i don't know if it is possible to do... i only think it whould be a great resource...
i'm not a dev and don't understand the tech behind the ext-miniusb...
but sorry again... next time i'll know were to post...
This has been discussed in the WM forums - they were asking if the Diamond could have tv-out feature, as it's similar to the touch pro. It couldn't. They have probably disabled the connections inside the mainboard. Probably... Anyway - if some devs are willing to try it will be a great feature.
Personally I have decided that my next phone will have a HDMI out or at least a TV-out. That's one of the reasons I won't be getting the Nexus or the Milestone even if I have the money...
nice work on flaming the guy up there...
would be a nice feature, if someone could confirm it wasnt likely then fine, but we should look into it

True.
Actually, if screencast can display what's going on on the phone on your computer, i suppose a kind of t.v. out is possible. Well, more of a computer out but i suppose it could still kind of work.
It's a shame but looking at http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/ doesn't seem like anything since december 28th has been done but i could be wrong.
ps: for all those wondering what screencast is it is a program which allows the user the control of theyre android over a pc through the means of usb
there just simply isnt the pinout or the hardware in the phone to make a signal your tv could understand. If there was it would be a feature from the manufacture. They dont just spend money on chips and then not use them.
so we can all stop dancing around the "probably not", and just say nope can't be done with this phone. wait for an android phone with an ion or something
nice try though!

Kaiser + Imageon = ??? doesnt do crap for SDL/OpenGL in WM (or does it poorly with community supported drivers that HTC DIDNT include) and works a peach in the android port (27ish fps in Neocore!)
perfect example of the chipset being able to do something that wasnt a concern enough for HTC to utilize.
The G1's hardware does NOT support video out. Without doing serious hardware modification to the phone, this is impossible. There are however other Android devices that support it, I just don't remember which ones specifically. I actually think the mytouch can, but don't quote me on that.
Nope seems it doesnt

Hd-Videos and Tv-Out
U guys sure about the magic not having tv-out ? ive seen a couple of tvout cables on ebay n elsewhere. Also this http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=24&id=2900 seems to say HECK YEA
Oh and so does amazon http://www.amazon.com/OEM-HTC-Out-Cable-ACT100/dp/B002OOZDSE
Except it won't work. Just because the pinout of a plug has pins for a certain function, doesn't mean the device has these features implemented. And androids do not use most of the usbext plug. Video out is one of them (sure, the CPU can do it, but notice it needs a PAL/NTSC encoder, and it's not on our motherboards), another one is the support of the media keys on the HTC RC E100.
Some stores blindly write that it's compatible, just because the plug matches. Its bollocks. It's like wikipedia claiming that MT3G has a proximity and ambient light sensor - it doesn't. (And YES, no one has corrected this yet!!)
Quite simply i have decided its about time i get myself a new 'high' end android phone. I have owned the HTC Magic (32b) for some time now and while i do like it very much i feel its a bit week when it comes to multi tasking and new versions of android i feel arnt completely stable on it as they just are not built for this old phone.
So anyway its time for me to pick a new phone, but im just not sure which to go for. I like the look of either the Nexus one, Motorola Milestone or the HTC desire all for there own reasons.
Both the Nexus One and HTC desire to me seem to be pretty much the same apart from that the Nexus One has already got froyo and that the HTC desire has sense UI and optical track ball thingy.
While the Motorola Milestone i like very much for its qwerty keyboard and i believe it has the best GPU (am i right?). The Motorola is also the cheaper of the phones which is always a plus.
So my question to all of you is what are your thoughts on the different phones and which would you pick? are there any other features i should take into thought? or other phones?
I like the Nexus One and the Desire.
I forget it the Desire has a snapdragon processor as well? If yes, I'd go for that one. The body is really really sexy and the optical trackball is a step ahead of the trackball on the n1.
However, I really like the N1. IMO it's one of the most underrated phones out there. Battery life is 12 to 14 hours moderate / light use. One thing to be aware of, the speaker is tiny and the phone doesn't ring very loud compared to the Blackberry I had before.
As far as I remember the HTC Desire lacks the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA. I don't know what exactly you are planing to use your new phone, but I (considering the huge amount of time I spend internet browsing), I'd take the Nexus One.
I'd also take into consideration the fact that the Nexus comes with a bit more powerful battery than the HTC Desire. I own a HTC Magic too. Every time I keep my wi-fi connection on for more than 2-3 hours, the battery runs out and the phone shuts down, which can is sometimes very annoying.
thank you all for your input ^^ i have noticed that four people have clicked 'other' it would be nice if you do this to post something telling me which phone you would rather have
I think the Samsung Galaxy S is going to be the new king of android... I have the same problem - can't make my mind what to get.
If I would go for Android I certainly will wait for this one...

But I´m not going for Android
IMO the best Android phone is the EVO 4G, if you´re on Sprint. It all depends on what you are going to do with your phone, do you really need the 1 Ghz processor and such HIGH-end specifications?
Hi there
First off, I came across this info while researching phones a while ago (~6 weeks ago), but I'm pretty sure that this is STILL the case.
You mentioned the Motorola Milestone as a potential candidate. I would recommend you NOT get this phone. This is because while the Motorola Droid can be rooted and use ROMs, be overclocked (to 800MHz! get that one lol) etc, the Milestone's bootloader is locked down by Motorola which means that you can NOT install 'custom' ROMs on it, you're stuck with the stock ROM (at least until Motorola actually decide to open up the bootloader).
It's not a matter of waiting for someone to crack it either; apparently they've signed the bootloader and not released their signing keys (sorry, I'm not sure of the technical details), which makes it pretty much impossible to load up anything because it will check the signature before loading anything.
So while I don't really have a real suggestion, I may have narrowed down your choices. Do investigate thoroughly if the next phone you buy really is 'open' or just 'open for marketing/advertising purposes'!
Happy hunting

thanks dude, i think that pretty much knocks the milestone out of the running, got to love my custom roms
Sure np
Do make sure your next phone doesn't have such a stupid restriction.
I'm looking for a new phone as well, even though the one I have is perfectly fine and zippy (HTC Hero GSM with the Cronos ROM) haha
The one thing I AM sure of is that I definitely require a physical keyboard! Touchscreen isn't good for hooves like mine lol
Guess I'll watch this thread too, for suggestions
I noticed you wrote milestone instead of droid.
do not get the milestone.
If you can, try to get an unlocked droid (I for one need a keyboard), but don't get a milestone since motorala locked it up making it unrootable (so far).
besides that I'd get a N1, I've played with a friends and it's pretty sleek, very fast and all around great
Two words: Nexus One

As im in the UK i cant easly get a droid, and alot of the ones on ebay that say they are a droid are the milestone, is there any easy way of telling them apart?
I was a former milestone user, and the draconian attitude of Motorola regarding the bootloader led me to swap it for an HD2. Now I am in rom-flashing heaven. The HD2 is miles ahead of the milestone in terms of customizability and usability.
BUt to answer your question, AFAIK, Droid = CDMA while Milestone = GSM. So if you are using a GSM network in UK, a Droid is out of the question, and you can only use the (locked) Milestone.
Im also in the same bandwagon, observing the android landscape, looking for what phone to get (looks like android for the HD2 is gonna take awhile). Since HTC has yet to announce a GSM version of the EVO, the Samsung Galaxy is looking MIGHTY tempting. Cant beat a 4-inch super AMOLED screen.
if you CANT wait, then just get the Desire or the Nexus One. Im more partial to the Desire myself. I like Sense.

the TMobile MyTouch Slide is suppose to have a great physical KB. I hated the Hero's KB, in fact that's partly why I didn't get it. I tried the KB on the iPhone (amazing KB) and on the HTC EVO (really, really nice) and you'd be surprised how you get used to it.
Hope that helps.

That's exactly right.
And since there aren't any CDMA-based networks in the UK, the Droid isn't an option at all.
In the UK, I can't really see why anyone would take the Nexus One over the Desire.
All you do is end up limiting yourself to Vodafone with their crappy web bundle and poor 3G coverage.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.
I've used the iPhone's keyboard too, and I also thought it was much better than the Hero's.
Still, I think I've pretty much had my fill of touch keyboards hehe
Or hold out for the HTC Vision if you want a hardware keyboard.

Personal opinion: without 4g and a 4inch + screen it's definitely not on the edge of new technology.
For $200 and the new $10 / month per line charge, it would be personally hard for me to justify.
The older snapdragon generation hints towards it having been available for release for sometime now so I definitely wonder why it wasn't.
I hate it when companies announce that there's going to be an announcement. Just announce it already.

What do you guys think?
The WM7 dual-core?
Android phone?
iPhone?
WebOS?
Or a combination announced together?
My guess is WM7.
My hope is a combination including an Android super-phone.
After Echogate I find it hard to care. If they made such a big deal for that then how good could a phone announced on Twitter be?

Well let's think about this:
What do you do when you have a product that is meh but you want to sell? [maybe high profit margin or being first at something again]
You hype it.
That's what Sprint did with the Echo.
[And to be honest, there are a lot more people interested in the Echo than you would expect]
Now, when it comes to a super-phone, you don't need the hype.
So why spend the money on it?
Kinda makes sense.
youd think after letting you guys down you'd be hyped up for this. its gonna be better the the echo.. cause you're all HTC nut swingers LOL.. jk... or am I ?

Any thing has to be better than the dsi reject
from my phone duh
Knowing Sprint.. probably the echo with a third screen for a slide out keyboard.
This is getting old...won't be anything we likely want.

I disagree with this logic, personally. Sprint has to know what the benchmark is for a high end phone. Or maybe they don't.
Anything less than an Evo successor isn't worth announcing to any tech savvy person.

Two comments to this:
1) The echo isn't a high end phone, it is not meant to be.
2) Your problem is that tech savvy people make up about 1% of the market.
They aren't concerned about those people as much as they are everyone as a whole.
It makes a lot of sense.
Think of it like this.
You're trying to send a middle of the road phone, you hype it up.
[Hype is the best way to sell to "less tech savvy people"]
When it comes to super-phones, they don't need hype.
Their "super"-ness will sell themselves.

I don't think phones like the Atrix would be getting advertising like they do if that was really the case, but I certainly respect your opinion. Only tech blogs got invites to the Echo event. I haven't seen one ad on TV for the Echo. I don't think general people read Android Central like that.
I see inconsistency in your line of reasoning.
WHAT?! You mean this time Sprint won't be springing to give me foamy sauces on gourmet catered dishes...and a COMPLETELY UNRELATED DAVID BLAINE MAGIC SHOW!?
I'm disappointed.

The Atrix was announced at CES.
That's not using hype.
That's just throwing it out there for people to play with.
Sprint doesn't use CES [mainly cause Verizon and At&t usually dominate] so they use other events to announce.
But still, the Atrix isn't hype.
I haven't seen one commercial for the Atrix that has tried to hype it up.
It doesn't need hype.
The Echo was full of it.
David Blane, etc etc...
Companies generally use hype when the product or thing they're pushing is weak to begin with.
Like the whole Verizon coverage map.
That's hyped up to make you think that Verizon is the end all be all of carriers. [and it's worked]
But a quick look at the fine print shows that the map they have constructed contains other networks that you can roam on among other inconsistencies.
And if you actually did research to compare the true networks, they aren't very different in coverage. [Except T-mobile is a distant fourth]
