Hey all,
i got one question:
If you launch a program like TomTom or patience and close it it by ticking the X, the programs are still active in the background (Taskmanager) and still consuming RAM.
Is there program that will help me clean those active background program cleaned?
You can try with this one: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-tag-htcaddicts.html

Click to collapse
You could also:
Go to Settings --> System --> Task Manager --> Running and select the program then "Stop Selected" or "Stop All".
AND also from where you are above select the "Button" tab and select the "End Programs by tapping "X".
That way pressing the "X" closes programs instead of minimising them.
Cheers

Maybe a strange topic title but this is what I mean:
When I have PocketInformant running for example in the background, it opens instantly when it is selected from a TaskManager like pBar (wich I use). When I want to acces the programm using a normal shortcut from my startmenu it has some delay before it opens.
Does anybody have any tips or ideas about this?
You kinda answered your question yourself. If it running already it doesnt need to be loaded....

You are correct. But I wanted to know why a programm opens instantly when you open it using a task manager. While opening it using the StartMenu takes more time, In both cases the programms are already running in the background

I actually do understand your question because I noticed that too. When a program is alreading running in the background minimized and if you select it using a task manager of choice, it opens up quickly since it was just minimized where as if your where to go through programs menu and run the program shortcut again, there is some delay. I think it is because its closing the program or checking if it is already running that is causing the delay. Don't know for sure actually
i'm not sure if it works the same way as in desktop windows, but here it isl like that...
when you want to code a program that can be launched only once you put a specific section in program's startup part, that checks wether another copy of the process isn't already running, if no is found application starts normally, if it finds previously launched copy it terminates.
now i'm not sure how does it work here in wm5/6 as it happens with all the programs, so probably it is more os dependant, but if i'm right the delay comes from the fact that taping a shortcut actually runs the program again in the first place...
banannq is absolutely correct. This is how things work in WM as well.
When you click a link to the program or its exe file directly from file explorer it is launched again even if it is already running.
If this is a big app like Skype or PI it will take time just to load the exe so even if all it has to do is close right away there is still a delay.
The task manager however calls the program copy already running directly so there is no delay.
Thanks for the explanation!
Now I understand what was driving me mad
So opening programms from a TaskManager is the fastest way to work with you PPC. Or maybe run a today plugin that has a running programms line. I believe the O2 plugin has this kind of functionality.
WisBar Lite and MagicButton (both free) add a running programs icon list to the top menu bar so you can more quickly task swap.

I use pBar for this, works like a charm
The funny thing is - this is exactly the kind of thinking that brought M$ to create the ever so hated "smart minimize" concept and spawn a hoard of "close button / task manager" applications like magic button.
It is nice when programs start right away, but the trouble is RAM on WM devices is still stuck on at very low limit. Now, if we had devices with 256 or more MB of RAM we probably would not need to close apps.
Hi guys!
Is there a way to close the application instead of going to the specific "task manager"?
FOr example, I open one application and if there isn't the exit option I don't know how can I close it up...
When there is no exit option the only way to close program is using a task manager.
There are many task manager.. but i prefer xBar 3. It's the best. Fast & good. Pressing & holding joystick will list runing tasks.
You can close a task by moving the cursor to an app and pressing Back key.
Handy.
For a free solution you can try SmartToolKit. But again, I prefer xbar.
How do I make close = close?
The little x in the top right has been close in Windows everything for over a decade but now Windows Mobile decided to make it = minimize. Thanks Microsoft, you really know how to screw up a great product.
I've had it working partially before on previous kitchens, where some windows would close but things like the program files and settings wouldn't
I'm looking for the final solution here, any suggestions?
QuickMenu is the best free tool out there to do this. Or you could use WisBar Advance, about $10, then you can choose which apps close, and which minimize on action, besides that WisBar is one of those apps that everyone should use in my opinion.
Aha
I was wondering which one was mostly working, I bet it was that Quickmenu.
I'll try that again, but I think it wasn't closing program files and settings type windows, and if that is true, I'll spring for wisbar. Thanks.
Quickmenu link
Quickmenu 2.7 is here for anyone who finds this thread later, nice pics of the app on this link.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-quickmenu-v2-7.html
I used to use pbar before, its around in D&H, its old though.
A chef in the hermes forum cabed it up, give it a try.
Quickmenu, pbar
Quickmenu is really really cool
It has recent programs and it looks good, but.
It doesn't close phone, async, and program directory windows.
Also, I don't like expand programs and settings but with quickmenu I don't see anyway around it. Now I remember why I got rid of it
I have my camera button set to next-app on this Vogue, eventually I get so many windows open I just reset to close them haha.
I'll try pbar..
pBar
pBar is not closing any open window, Programs and activesync windows stay minimized when I press X.
I thought maybe quickmenu was running and interfering but it isn't running, and besides, pBar doesn't list all the windows.
I'm guessing that some visible windows are considered a process that is not a task.
With Sprint Touch (HTC Vogue) running Windows Mobile 6.1 I can select Settings > System > Task Manager > Button > Enable the "X" button to end running programs > End programs by tapping "X". This probably works with other WM devices.
Thanks
mind you wm was not made to have apps terminated like that
some apps like outlook goes crazy if you do it
been reported many many times if people have set the terminate
apps at x on
and close outlook before they get their msg send notification
outlook goes crazy and send the same sms or mail 2 or more times
costing the user money
Wow, I just saw the date of this thread & relized how old it was...now to be re-awaken'd with a "thanks"! LOL
Try WkTask .
im tryng this for windows mobile 6.5 but i can't get the damn thing to work, the close button doesnt close the process just minimizes it and i cant find any setting that can change this!!
You can go to the task manager and finish it
But this is one time that WM looks like the old Windows 3.11
I know most people want the programs launched to close, but my problem is whenever I open one program (for example icontacts), and then open another program (for example opera mini) the first program (icontact) closes by itself... this happens with almost all software even when I have >8mb memory free. It's annoying because I have to reload the first software...
is it b/c of the ROM i have installed or is there a solution (i would hate to have to format and reinstall everything for this!!)
Thanks
Check if you have HTC Taskmanager or WKTask. These are both popular programs which can be set to make the X button close programs. You can change the settings of either of these programs.
How can I do this? I don't know how to use it, nor do I care to. It is eating valuable RAM and I want it gone. Please help, I searched and couldn't find really any info on Voice Command newer than like 2005.
I have a Vogue running NFSFAN 6.5 V16 ROM. Thanks in advance.
Just go to settings-personal-voice command, and unclick enabled. If you don't have the settings panel, then go into \windows\startup and delete the shortcut and then either soft reset or kill vc with a task manager.
I didn't use it for a long time, but have found more recently that it's pretty useful. If you set up your start menu well, you don't really need a complicated UI or a program launcher. You can launch anything you want with VC (just say 'start program x'). But I can understand not wanting it as well.
