Maybe a strange topic title but this is what I mean:
When I have PocketInformant running for example in the background, it opens instantly when it is selected from a TaskManager like pBar (wich I use). When I want to acces the programm using a normal shortcut from my startmenu it has some delay before it opens.
Does anybody have any tips or ideas about this?
You kinda answered your question yourself. If it running already it doesnt need to be loaded....

You are correct. But I wanted to know why a programm opens instantly when you open it using a task manager. While opening it using the StartMenu takes more time, In both cases the programms are already running in the background

I actually do understand your question because I noticed that too. When a program is alreading running in the background minimized and if you select it using a task manager of choice, it opens up quickly since it was just minimized where as if your where to go through programs menu and run the program shortcut again, there is some delay. I think it is because its closing the program or checking if it is already running that is causing the delay. Don't know for sure actually
i'm not sure if it works the same way as in desktop windows, but here it isl like that...
when you want to code a program that can be launched only once you put a specific section in program's startup part, that checks wether another copy of the process isn't already running, if no is found application starts normally, if it finds previously launched copy it terminates.
now i'm not sure how does it work here in wm5/6 as it happens with all the programs, so probably it is more os dependant, but if i'm right the delay comes from the fact that taping a shortcut actually runs the program again in the first place...
banannq is absolutely correct. This is how things work in WM as well.
When you click a link to the program or its exe file directly from file explorer it is launched again even if it is already running.
If this is a big app like Skype or PI it will take time just to load the exe so even if all it has to do is close right away there is still a delay.
The task manager however calls the program copy already running directly so there is no delay.
Thanks for the explanation!
Now I understand what was driving me mad
So opening programms from a TaskManager is the fastest way to work with you PPC. Or maybe run a today plugin that has a running programms line. I believe the O2 plugin has this kind of functionality.
WisBar Lite and MagicButton (both free) add a running programs icon list to the top menu bar so you can more quickly task swap.

I use pBar for this, works like a charm
The funny thing is - this is exactly the kind of thinking that brought M$ to create the ever so hated "smart minimize" concept and spawn a hoard of "close button / task manager" applications like magic button.
It is nice when programs start right away, but the trouble is RAM on WM devices is still stuck on at very low limit. Now, if we had devices with 256 or more MB of RAM we probably would not need to close apps.

Does anyone know if there is an application (EXE file) within WM6 or WM5 that executes the "programs" and "settings" list, without tapping the Start button?
Also, on a soft reset, how can you make a single application load everytime?
Thanks...

Anyone? I am sure there is a simple solution that I am overlooking. With a little help here I can fix a couple of problems with an iPhone emulator that can be incorporated into any WM6 Rom. I am currently running this now, but these fixes would make it perfect, and would almost do away with the Windows Mobile today screen. I am pretty amazed with this so far, The new iPhone today screen perfectly mathes what you would see on the apple website, and I am not noticing any signifigant lag time between apps that are loaded this way.
To make an application load on a soft reset, just place it in the windows/start up folder or place a link to it in that folder.

Faria, memory cannot serve you right. You are already at 97% capacity and the only way to get the information you require is to do a soft reset at which point you will get down to 75%. Or in the alternation upgrade.....
Is this the emulator you are talking about?

Nothing as of yet. Without recompiling the software, each button on the iPhone today screen requires an .exe file, executable, to launch that particular service or program. To make things easy, I wanted to know how to create an exectuable file that will launch contacts, programs folder, and settings folder, with these, the normal WM6 today screen would not be needed anymore.

Any idea when a first beta will be ready (if you are gonna release it)?

I have figured out how to link to Outlook Contacts, I am just having troubles getting settings and programs to pull up. Wven with creating shortcuts to them
well if you want settings like for example the task manager then a call to this would bring it up:
ctlpnl cplmain.cpl,4,2
Didn't want to leave you hanging so I ran a quick search here to see if it has a list and here's something that should steer you in a direction...that is if this is what you wanted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289005
that doesnt help, you know how to add a shortcut to start start menu
Here's a similar app:

Clock doesnt work there though
is it possible to build/get a taskmanager like on PPCs with AKU3 and higher?
a programm that automatically COMPLETELY closes programs (more memory, no programs running in background anymore)?
why do they include it with PPCs but not with smartphones?
thx.
http://www.e-natives.web.id/
Try this
Don't the normal task manager shut down the programs ok?

it does but i wanna have a task manager like on the PPCs.
one where you don't have to start TM program to close other programs but one who does it automatically (look at HTCs taskmanager on newer PPCs).
@samyboy: thx, i'll take a look although from fit doesn't seem to be what i'm looking for, still thx.
Ok, but the program has a inbuilt task manager that is really good
Haven't used it myself, but read somewhere that someone was using xbar fine on S710. its designed for smartphones, unlike the other managers designed for PocketPC:
http://xetranet.free.fr/xbar2/?lang=eng&project=xBar 2&page=Presentation
I have an 800w, and was hoping to find the 320x320 TP HTC task manager.
I've tried the other one's floating around and even some modified to work with Real VGA on a 320x320 screen, but none work with a regular 320x320 screen.
here's the files.
now you just need to make the cab.
Actually, you might be able to just copy the attached files to the 800
Thanks Berd.
I wish I knew how to "cab" it up so that if it went awry, I could just uninstall it via add/remove.
I might just dump the files in my Windows directory and see what happens, but I'm not confident that it'll work right if I do it that way.
I was thinking, though. Perhaps I could download and install one of the other HTC TM cabs, and then overwrite the files it installs with these from the Pro. Then, theoretically, an uninstall of the TM might result in uninstalling the replacement files...
Either way, do a Backup first (Sprite or Otherwise).
That way you can always do a Restore and undo any issues that may arise.
Well, I needed to do a real hard reset anyhow, so before I did, I just dumped it all in my Windows folder. No luck.
Perhaps someone else with more knowledge than me can figure this one out.
Thanks again for the ROM dump, Berd. I'm betting some good use will come of it via zbop, hannip, ebag, etc.
Task Manager Quick Menu
Has anyone found a way to activate the HTC Quick Menu from a button? The Task Manager is great for stopping programs but the HTC version also allows switching between running programs. Unfortunately, it requires a thumb press on the screen top right, an awkward place for me to reach as a lefty. I can't seem to find any exe that does that function. Anyone found it?
Thanks,
Mike

For the Task Manager you are correct. But that only allows you to stop programs. I am looking for a way to start the Quick Menu (a part of the HTC Task Manager package) that allows stopping and switching between programs that is only available from the X close on the today screen. I have tried all the apps that are named quick*, task*, tsk*, qtask*, etc but cannot find the one that runs the drop down Quick Menu. It is possible it is one of the DLL's that can only be started by another app.
Thanks,
Mike

The Treo Pro has the built-in WM task manager (taskmgr.exe) in the windows directory. I created a shortcut to my programs and use it instead of the HTC provided one and this one workds great.
I'm pretty sure there should be some reg edits associated with this but here is a cab for it.
If you are wondering why your device is suddenly slowing down and lossing memory. This might answer your question...
Everytime someone calls your phone, any miss calls, any text messages you receive, any voice messages, etc... there is a SCRIPT Notification generated that can accummulate over time and this can eat up your memory and processing time.
To get rid of them, I use Check Notification: http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/product_detail.php?productname=checknotify
Has a very small foot print and can be installed in the Flash Disk. Just go to it's settings and check the 3 boxes, run the application and clean all those unwanted SCRIPT Notifications.
I am pretty sure there are other cleaners that can do the same, if you find them, please let us know which one and how to configure them correctly.
Thanks...
excellent, just what i was looking for
because, as described, i've been experiencing that problem quite often, and it is very annoying, when you have an almost $2000 phone, and people ask you "why it's soooooo slow"
--- EDIT ---
it is kinda weird, but after installation, i can't find it anywhere, i even used windows explorer can't find the install path, WTF?

Did you install it in the Main Memory or Flash Disk. It should be under Program Files/Check Notifications.
If you still can't find it, use this extracted .exe file from my device. You can place it at your Flash Disk or drop it in the Windows Folder. Just create a shortcut at Windows/Start Menu/Programs
ATTENTION!!!!
In many cases after cleaning, using this software, the notification queue your device doesn't sync anymore.
The program isn't designed for WM5/6/6.1 and remove ALSO the Activesync entries (ow WMDC entries if you use VISTA).
You have to use MEMMAID to recreate activesync entries in the notification queue! (or hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools)

Works well on mine. Never erased anything other than SCRIPT Notifications, otherwise I would not have posted it here. I don't know why it erases your active sync notifications though. I have been using this software since day 1. It is the second application I installed after SKTools.

If this ever happens. Just use the attached file. Place it in your Flash Disk and run using File Explorer. This small utility will recreate the lost active sync notification allowing you to sync again. There is no need for a bloatware software like Mem Maid.

Thanks for pointig out activesync fix utility. As I've told also you can use to fix"memmaid OR hard reset, or recreate manually the entries, using some tools"
The activesync checknotify problem is a random problem, but I had it since first WM5 on IMATE Kjam (HTC WIZARD) and is still here. I've tested yesterday (X7500, Michy's 6.1 ROM) and I've manually recreated replog entries because the device won't sync anymore neither with WDMCon VISTA nor with latest activesync on XP
As tool I suggest FDCSOFT taskmanager http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm (from dotfred) freeware Wm6 application (enclosed in many cooked ROMs)
It has all the notifcation queue feature needed, remove duplicated, remove scripts, (just choose the notification tab on the top) and many more features, as start/stop/select auto-manual services, regedit, ipconfig, ....

Thanks for the tip.
One thing I don't like about using MemMaid and Dot Fred's Task Manager for the removal of SCRIPT and duplicated Notifications is: it is not automatic. You have to manually check it and then confirm you want to delete it. Too many things to press after a day of text messages and phone calls.
Using Check Notifications on the other hand, it does it automatically for me after pressing CLEAR.

How did you get both DATE and TIME (with AM and PM included) in your top bar?

Thanks. I will definitely use the battery and memory CABs.
The date and time notifications, I might skip. I was hoping it would be another application. I don't want to mess with the time and date via registry because a bunch of my applications depend on it such as Pocket Live TV and Diamond TV, etc... I found out long ago, that modifying it makes the above applications crashed.
I know most people want the programs launched to close, but my problem is whenever I open one program (for example icontacts), and then open another program (for example opera mini) the first program (icontact) closes by itself... this happens with almost all software even when I have >8mb memory free. It's annoying because I have to reload the first software...
is it b/c of the ROM i have installed or is there a solution (i would hate to have to format and reinstall everything for this!!)
Thanks
Check if you have HTC Taskmanager or WKTask. These are both popular programs which can be set to make the X button close programs. You can change the settings of either of these programs.
