Rom Flashing Question - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hey Everyone-
This post has probably already been answered but i have been searching the forums (and google) and getting mixed results.
I looking to flash the ROM on my HTC Touch Pro (Fuze). However, I've read that my phone must be unlocked to flash a new radio, but not a new ROM. However I've also read that with a new ROM comes a new Radio. So which is it? Do i need to unlock my phone to flash a new ROM because if not i will have a phone w/o a Radio?
Thanks alot, these forums are awesome.

From my understanding, you only need to unlock the phone if you want to use another device's radio. For example, you have a Touch Pro, if you wanted to put a Touch HD radio on it then the phone needs to be unlocked. However, if you want to put another Touch Pro radio on your touch pro you shouldn't need to unlock the phone.
To answer your second question about Roms with or without radios.... They come both ways but I have mostly seen Roms without included radios. Just read the desired Rom info page to find out if it includes a radio or not.

Unlock (HardSPL) is always necessary. No matter if u flash a radio, a rom or a radio/rom.
The only moment when u do not need to unlock is if u flash an official update , radio or rom, that is made from ur provider for ur phone. Or if its unbranded , the update is downloaded from htc itself with ur serial number entered befor.
BTW: Unlock (HardSPL) means that the loader of ur phone accepts NOT signed Roms or radio files for flashing.

Thank you both for the quick replies. So that i have this clear-
I can download and run hardspl according to the instructions etc, etc. Then if i choose to flash a rom without a radio i can. Then (or before) I can flash a Fuze Radio to my phone all without sim unlocking my phone?
Do i have that right?
Thank a million

Not shure if I got u correct in the first post:
By unlock do u mean SIM unlock ? Means use sims from any provider.
By unlock u mean entering the pin number to use ur phone ?
By unlock u mean (what I thought first) enabling the phone to accept any kind of rom ?
Normally a new radio is not always needed, I flash most of the times leaving my radio as it is, if its good in reception and power consumption

2. What are the different types of Unlock? (answer by DaveShaw)
The three stages of unlock are:
SIM: Allows you to use SIM's from another carrier. Can be done using codes or unlocker programs on xda-devs.
Security: Allows you to flash radios from another device (i.e. Raphael) - It does other stuff, but this is all the casual user will use it for
CID: CID unlocking is an old concept, nowadays you flash Hard SPL instead. This lets you flash any ROM, Splash or Radio (depending on sec unlock) to your device. N.B. the CID is the carrier ID (e.g. HTC__001). The stock SPL's only let you flash ROM's that match the CID in the ROM image with the CID on your device.
Also, SuperCID is an even older concept no longer valid on newer devices.

These are what I understand as the levels of Unlocking... so you're right. I was talking about a security unlock (my apologies). The carrier shouldn't have anything to do with the process. And i don't need special software to security unlock the phone right? (that's where i was getting confused)
As for that last part--
So assuming i like the reception and battery usage i get right now I can flash any ROM i want w/o worrying about losing the radio? And if i do get a ROM with a radio is the radio installed automatically or are there two steps? Thus enabling me to install the ROM without the radio that came with it?
Many Thanks

Ok, first u have to HardSPL (What does: Ur Phone accepts any radio and/or rom)
From here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=410150
NOTE 3: this is unsigned Hard-SPL. no limitations on flashing ROMs or radio packages. also, this has overwrite protection, if someone needs to revert to stock SPL for warranty reasons, we will soon post a stock SPL downgrade package.

If u have a touch pro and want to use Diamond or Blackstone radios then u have to do look here, first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426609
Then:
Flash ROM -> ur radio stays the same
Flash Radio -> ur rom stays the same
Flash all in one -> Both are changing, radio and rom.
Look in the roms thread, they tell u if it comes with or without radio. I think most of the times without. The original Raphael rom from HTC is WITH radio btw

Thank you very, very, very much!!!
Im gonna give this a try now.
Once again, many thanks.

Make sure to thoroughly read through the stickys on flashing a rom........
overall, as mentioned, hardspl first, then falsh rom, hard reset, then flash radio, hard reset, then install rilphone cab and you're good to go....

Can I CID unlock the Tilt, then flash the OEM rom out of the box?

The reason i ask this is because (as silly as this sounds) I'm trying to set a personal record for "least amount of time modding a phone after purchase" (it's a bet).
Could i buy an AT&T Tilt take it out of the box, hook it up to my computer (after installing the drivers etc.) and flash it to the Kaiser rom without worrying (about having enough battery life, about bricking the phone, etc)?
Thanks
Of course You can. You would have to beat my record though. I didnt even play with the phone at all. Lol
Same here but I lost valuable time when I forgot to choose "Kaiser" as the target on the HTC ROM tool...
What I did was:
reset out of customization, then flashed hardspl (this was the only time I saw the yucky AT&T today screen & xp'ed yucky startup annimation)
dl full TyTNII & nbhextract os.nb
grab Gold HTC Sunrise over earth splash from Sleuth ROM
convert with htc splash tool then convert again with pof's splash converter
rolled everthing into ruu_signed.nbh using htc rom tool (lost time here w/wrong target)
flashed this, loaded phmregedit & proceeded to manually enter all the reghacks that Kaiser needs
now I'm golden
First time I've ever done this with a new phone....
Quickie question on this, You have to get it SIM unlocked first? or does that not matter for firmware, post HardSPL?
there is no SIM unlocked exept from the carrior at this time.
steps you take are outlined in th sticky but
#1 flash HardSPL(condom for your Kaiser)
#2 flash rom of your picking
#3 set up personal settings
simple man!
My phone is still SIM locked to AT&T atm. I only CID unlocked it with hardspl so I could flash another vendor's ROM.

Thats exactly the answer I've been looking for the last few days, so you CAN flash a rom without sim, just CID unlock. Woot!

Yup. I think that's what 90%+ of the AT&T users here are doing, including myself.
I'm SuperCID but SIMlocked, and I may never SIMunlock my phone - I don't foresee any international travel for at least a year or two, and by then I'll probably have a TyTn III.

Heh, same but i will be sim unlocking it ^^; but just not bothering till i get closer to the time. Why deal with the hassle, lol.

Dumb question, just can't find an answer...

Sorry for the dumbness of the question, but do I have to sim-unlock my Kaiser (Orange) before flashing with a new radio/rom (Dutty's Hybrid 29/4). I've heard of unlockers just patching your current radio, so does flashing with a new radio automatically unlock the phone anyway?
One more thing - does this Dutty's rom (I'm going for the non-cube 1.65.14.06) also flash the radio, or is it just the rom? It says +(radio) on the posts, but I just want to be sure...
Cheers
Chris
Sim unlock, no. There is something called CID unlock which you must do in order to flash. You CID unlock by flashing HardSPL. Look it up. Sim unlock will let you use your device on any carrier.
The sim unlock works by patching a special radio (which is actually non functional as a radio, but it helps reveal the sim unlock code) and running a special program on the device and a computer. When you are done you have to flash back your original radio.
Flashing a new radio does not automatically unlock your phone.
Some of Dutty's roms come with a radio, some do not. If they say rom+radio they do. If they say rom only well, its rom only. You have to read each cooks individual FAQ/
thread to know what you are flashing.
i read somewhere that sometimes when you flash with simlock it is possible that it stops accepting any simcards.
so when i first flashed i also simunlocked.
but maybe im wrong and you dont have to do this.
i am sim, supercid, and security unlocked and haven't had any problems with my phone read the wiki it will help you understand everything
Yes you have to sim unlock your orange branded tytnII before flashing, search around xda there are a few free ways of doing this...

Can I flash Radio without running HSPL

Hi,
I have problem in locking GPS after upgrading to WM6.1 from HTC. I stay in Singapore.
I read many threads and understand GPS locking problem could be due to Radio version and also different Radio version for different countries.... I'm confused and have no confident in proceed further as I also read a lot of problem in flashing ROM. Wonder is it possible to flash ROM without running HSPL? any other solution for GPS locking instead of Radio issue?
The current status of my TyTnII shown in Device Information as follow:-
ROM Version: 3.29.707.o WWE
ROM date: 05/07/08
Radio version : 1.65.16.25
Any expert advice please..
Additional information: I stay in Singapore.
Ok, to flash anything to youre device, you will need to install HardSPL, this will then allow you to flash a new radio to youre device. Radios can be found Here
Following this you will need to flash youre old SPL to youre device. These can be found Here
Sam
You must Hard SPL to Flash anything (except ROM's released by your carrier).
Read this wiki page and follow the steps: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
This will guide you through unlocking your phone so your can flash it.
Thanks

I thought you don't need to have hardSPL to flash radio since all the radios are official releases? Besides all Singapore cellphones are unlocked.
Can some experts confirm this?
If it's alright to flash then I'll recommend KAIS_RADIO_ONLY_1.71.09.01
The GPS locks under 10 secs. Fastest I lock I got was about 2.5 secs
Reception is also very good

No. I mod everything lah.
But if you have the need to send in for repair within the warranty period can still flash back to the official one and return it. Flashing it back to the official rom is the easiest part cos only need 1 file and run once

I try haha
a) nope..never had that problem.
b) I didn't have that problem. You'll need to run JumpSPL first that flash with hard SPL
c) I use HSPL3.56 and it works fine.
d) This file

Singapore ones use the SEA versions listed in the Country column
but before flashing need to follow the instructions first. Though I'll suggets you send in your phone to check for problems first before you flash jsut in case haha
I don't understand where people get the idea that an unlocked phone will allow you to flash any ROM or radio to your phone... An unlocked phone is only "carrier unlocked". This means you can switch your sim card for another companies' sim card and use their service. You will still have to mod your phone to change the software (ie. HardSPL). This does not matter where you may live. Places like Europe have laws in most areas that restrict companies from selling carrier locked phones but not phones with locked software. I hate that here in North America we have carrier locked phones. If I bought a phone for $600 or more and decided to switch carriers, I would be forced to change phones and toss my old phone. It is different if you were to switch from TDMA/CDMA to GSM as not all phones can connect to both systems, but staying on the same system we still get kicked in "the junk" and are forced to buy a new contract and phone. That is why I hate locked phones.

See the 3rd thread on this page. If you get a signal now, your radio should be good
He's not asking about his radio. If you want to flash a new rom to your Fuze you do not have to be CID unlocked however you have to have hardspl flashed to your phone and you'll be good. Refer to the Flashin a New Rom for Noobs sticky in this section for help with flashing your rom.

basically what im asking is if i flash the phone, will the radio be erased?
flashing a new rom will not affect your current radio. be sure to hardspl your phone before flashing any rom.

Flashing Custom ROM's on WP7

hey guys, really noob question.
im running Mango on my HTC HD7 and im thinking of flashing nextgen+ 3.1 onto it. i was wondering, do i have to revert to NoDo before i get HSPL/RSPL, then flash the ROM? im just not sure about the order. but the main question, can i do it on mango, or is it better to revert to nodo? thanks
The existing OS is irrelevant when you flash a new one. That's more-or-less the point of flashing a new OS; may as well ask if you need to downgrade from Win7 to XP before you reformat your hard drive and install Linux (very roughly analogous).
The original SPL (bootloader) on the phone is *critical* before you install RSPL/HSPL though; the newer bootloaders will break semi-permanently (it's a total pain to recover them) if you try to unlock the bootloader. You should read the HSPL info very carefully. You will almost certainly need to downgrade your bootloader, and there are various ways you can do that depending on what version you currently have.
k thanks, and how do i figure out which version i have of the bootloader? is it the reboot while holding down volume down? if so, what do i look for?
also, how would i downgrade the bootloader if i do decide to flash another rom? one more thing too, im assuming i would lose all of my apps, SMS, email settings etc. ?
Your SPL (bootloader) version is shown in About, along with your firmware and radio versions (under More). It is also shown on the screen with the colored horizontal bands, which is (I believe) the only you referred to.
You need SPL 3.1 or lower to use HSPL. If you have 4.x, I believe you can download by simply installing a stock 3.1 SPL update (look for a radio ROM for your phone, and remove the radio part, just flash the SPL part). If you have 5.x, you'll need to try something like SL SPL. I don't know much about that whole area of WP7; I focus on apps, unlocks, and features for stock ROMs.
Flashing a custom ROM will wipe your phone, yes.
