i spoke to haykuro earlier and asked about the issues keeping us from getting root on rogers devices. he told me that the boot.img tells the bootloader to boot from a specific memory offset. this is in lines 166 - 173
Code:
166 hdr.kernel_addr = 0x10008000;
167 hdr.ramdisk_addr = 0x11000000;
168 if(saddr) {
169 hdr.second_addr = 0x00300000;
170 } else {
171 hdr.second_addr = 0x10F00000;
172 }
173 hdr.tags_addr = 0x10000100;
now the problem is that the radio on the rogers devices (3.22.20.17) changes the offsets and so we need to figure them out so that a boot.img can be created that will work with our radio.

I do hope this effort succeeds; it would be my very first cell phone that I can tweak to my heart's content.
My biggest requirement is tethering, but of course there are others. I also hear that tethering might be possible without even rooting, using PDANet from June Fabrics.
I will stay tuned,

PDANet looks like a decent idea (although I've read people have had state issues and client resets). I just want autonomy over my device if possible AND still have it work on my network lol ... I also don't run Windows anywhere except on one of my 200+ work machines (I'm a Midrange guy) so I need tethering to work on Linux and MacOSX ... plus then I can update My damn Wiki with some different content

That shouldn't make much of a difference. Is there any other chips that are different? I would be more interested in the chips that control the radio frequencies. I'm starting to believe that these are firmware controlled by a variable frequency generator.
I can imagine that this is possible because it personnally would make no sense to create a different phone for every market. Just use a different firmware to change the phone frequency.
UPDATE - Nevermind. After looking closer the main Qualcomm chip is also different. This probably controls the frequency.

once again it has to do with the amplifiers' frequency.
look at this pic: http://i.cmpnet.com/eetimes/news/online/2008/10/igoogle_2.jpg
then look at my pics and compare the two amplifiers. different model. look up the model numbers, different frequencies. if you take a closer look you will see the antenna switch chip is also for different frequencies, plus there are way too many differences on the radio board (resistors/capacitors)
also take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525060

Interestingly, that Qualcomm RTR6285 transceiver looks like it probably CAN do the full range of 3G frequencies, see the datasheet at: http://www.datasheetpro.com/268132_download_RTR6285_datasheet.html
What I have been wondering for a few days is what would happen if someone took the RADIO rom from a Canadian Rogers Dream and used it to flash their T-Mobile G1 - would that unlock the right frequencies in the phone? After having seen the datasheet, and notwithstanding the slight differences in transceiver numbers, I can't see why not.

well i promise to try with my old t-mobile G1, when we get the radio...
I have nothing to do with it anyways

Thanks skittleguy. I am playing with it right now. I thought we are not supposed to be able to back the ROM up without root? But my device says "Backup complete!"!!!!! Did you see the same thing and was it a complete backup for you?
EDIT: the backup folder contains boot.img, cache.img, data.img, misc.img, nandroid.md5, recovery.img, system.img
Total about 198MB
If this is a complete backup, I don't see any reason to prevent me from playing with it!

So as a little update, thanks to the hard work of Amon_RA (and Haykuro mostly, please don't kill me), the Rogers Magic has been rooted.

Best 1.5 for uk users

Hi, I currently have 1.1 “JFv1.43 for UK RC9 firmware!”
I want to update to 1.5 (cupcake), so can someone please tell me which update I should use as most of the update are for US users?
Also after updating, does the phone retain root access?
Thank you,
Every firmware I have tried has worked fine for me in the UK. At the moment Haykuro's ADP1.5Hr1 with radio 2.22.19.26I is the best so far, really is totally perfect for me.
Make sure you wipe your phone.
Kinda on-topic question...
Why was JF 1.43 RC9 'UK' specifically marked for UK users?

I knowledge on this subject is very limited, hence these questions.
By using “Haykuro's ADP1.5Hr1 with radio 2.22.19.26I” will the T–mobile internet work and whats the down side to wiping the phone and using unofficial 1.5?

UK APNs and UK Numbering format.
Both the ADP and the RC33 builds have the US numbering format, and as this isn't used in Europe it looks like rubbish.
I would recommend the Haykuro H build. This is the build I am most happy with.
You can use the "official" 1.5H build from haykuro aswell, if you want to have root and some other benefits but still retain the base build from HTC.

why are you talking in bold/big text?
if you've forgotten your password AND secret question then thats a bit silly really isnt it? You'll have to check with google if there is any way of recovering from that.
I have used every single 1.5 release that is available on this forum and I've settled with ADP 1.5H (look at my signature). I'm not installing anything else until JF will make his ADP 1.5 version, which he promised he would.
And please stop writing in large bold fonts -- it's childish.
Sorry for silly questions and bold text and I have now found my password for gMail.
Thanks guys for such prompt reply.
I think I’ll take Karolis and Zappza’s suggestion but can’t wait until JF version. Hope he will release it soon
ok this may be a silly question but if the main difference between RC9 and RC33 is the contacts phone number format, couldnt you simply flash over the rc33(or ADP 1.5) then copy over the uk app for contacts?

I've honestly didn't really check what the big differences are if any. But because RC9 was made for the UK, and it's a fact that UK and US versions of the phone differ a bit, I thought it will not hurt using UK firmware.
However, now I'm using ADP which is obviously American (can tell by the number formatting) and it works fine, so in reality who cares

Yeah, Dude's version had normal number layout. It's ADP 1.5 that has dashes in wrong places.
Thanks guys for all your help/advise. I’ve installed it and so fat its running good, except Toggle Settings doesn’t work.
Hope JF will release 1.5 soon.
If it's any help, I've just put the JF 1.5 build onto a UK phone and everything looks hunky dory!
If you're using the H builds, then there will be no number format at all. all numbers are just presented as they are stored. i have numbers like +44 nnnnnn, 07nnnnnnn, (020)nnnnnnn all over the place. even though this probably indicates the programmer is lazy, it also makes it universal. and I love the camera app so much.
btw. I don't really think you can port the contacts app between system. I guess it's tightly coupled with the phone app.

It's already begun. This is a Desire HD. There is plenty already available, including CM7.
what doesnt work on cm7 for it?
Well the thing is, we have to wait n see what bootloader it has, if it the old one or the one that we can downgrade, then we can root, and if we can root, ummm im pretty positive we can flash any rom from the Desire HD rom section.

I already have a root procedure in mind that I think will work. The HBOOT doesn't matter - the exploit in the newer HTC devices was not in the HBOOT. But the radio version does.

Momentarily. The Aria will still need support for CM. I'm it. This device is established and has good support already. We just need to document the procedure to root and get custom recovery on it, which will be a little more complex than the Euro DHD.
regoice, the great and mighty attn1 has come to the inspire, not sure if its a good thing or not as i still am using my aria but.... oh well.
I will have this phone when it comes out on the 13th, looking forward to some modding. I'm coming from an iphone, JB, customized etc, it's no longer any fun. Hope the roms work and the root is easily attainable, I will be back in here when i get the phone....5 days
I will be getting one of these on launch, though I'm not sure if stores are going to have the phone for a more expensive price than what's shown online. I'm coming from an HTC Fuze and this will be a big improvement for me....now I'll have a nice shiny new gadget to sleep with.
I'm hoping that by some stroke of luck I'll get one that allows sideloading but if not, there are ways around that....I don't like my devices being locked in any way. How long does it generally take to root new phones when they're out? I'm new to Android (been a WM person for quite a few years now) so I'm still trying to read as much as I possibly can about the OS and how it works.

Thanks for the information! Yeah I'm looking forward to this Sunday - I'm probably going to just go in the store when it opens and grab one up then waste the ENTIRE DAY tinkering with it and giggling like a baby with candy.
One thing I didn't see in those articles was the radio firmware for the phone. I've installed and tested... quite a few radios on my Fuze in order to achieve the best possible phone and GPS signal I can get. Is this possible once the phone is rooted?

All signs point to yes, undoubtedly we are going to blow this Inspire 4G up with root goodness, then once we get a custom recovery BAM! custom roms are soon to come after that. Overclocking the phone will yield results similar to Dual Core devices as posted by me in another thread.
The real power of this phone will shine brightly after all the above

Unfortunately it's not real clear, besides the socket itself, where and what kind of 3G module is installed. As of "HannStar J MV-4", most of the Google searches return motherboards or card readers for different computers.
Just curious what kind of 3G (model#) is installed. Since I already opened my G-tab, there is a mount that can easily accept required socket (some light soldering involved) and then just to get the right module and it can be retrofitted into 3G tablet. That's just a dream I know, but why not?? LOL

there is a 3g rom way better than original one for zpad,it is about the same speed of vegantab rom.it is a nvflash rom and you need be careful if you do not know chinese.http://www.ez-pad.net/android-2861-1-1.html
About 3g see this http://www.ez-pad.net/forum-viewthread-tid-2604-highlight-3g.html
Remember what they are talking about is zpad not gtab but you can open the case and compare two things, you may need to log in to view the full thread
SORRY for the chinese. Read carefully before you do anything you can use google translation. i may translate important part later if you need
Am I missing something??
What are we talking about?? Running 3G ROM on the tablet that is not 3G equipped??
It's like performing CPR on a dead person, what's the point??
Until someone figures out how to install that module and make it work on G-tab, 3G ROM is useless......
JMO.
Ok i need to clear some things up....
1. I have 2 Zpads, 1 is a 3G Version , 1 is Non 3G Version.
2. 3G version is running stock zpad Rom, Non 3g version is running Vegan 5.1.1
3. Both have 1 GB Ram
4. I have not opened either up yet, But will.
5. I was under the assumption most people here had the Zpad......not the gtab....
6. I am running the 3G with "three" internet provider sim card in australia, Speed test not close to a tower got me around 1.5 mbit. ( 150 kb a sec ).
7. tester30, bad idea to flame really.....zpads are out there and more popular than the gtab.....so this is not useless....

I believe you misunderstood my intention.
No flaming intended at all.
Just trying to understand what Zpad posting is doing in Gtab forum, unless someone can provide info on 3G module used in Zpad and couple pix would be helpful as well. Since those two are really close in design I won't hesitate to experiment on mine, even if I brick it. If there is a way to get that 3G running on Gtab it will benefit every Gtab owner.
Sorry if you felt flamed.

It's like performing CPR on a dead person, what's the point??
Until someone figures out how to install that module and make it work on G-tab, 3G ROM is useless......
JMO.

Seeing as they are basiclly the same hardware and there is no other forum for the zpad...
Why wouldnt i post it here?

Ah... I was hoping you were in the states. I have the non-3g version and had thought about installing the 3g module in it. Pretty good speeds on that. As to your assumption it is valid in the grand scheme of things, but this forum is mainly for the viewsonic branded version of our tablet and we seem to be a minority here. It is fine though as they do good work for us as well. As I said before the vegan rom works really well on our tablets. Do you have the T2 Zpad?

No flaming intended at all.
Just trying to understand what Zpad posting is doing in Gtab forum, unless someone can provide info on 3G module used in Zpad and couple pix would be helpful as well. Since those two are really close in design I won't hesitate to experiment on mine, even if I brick it. If there is a way to get that 3G running on Gtab it will benefit every Gtab owner.
Sorry if you felt flamed.

I will try and get the model number of the module used in the 3g version of the Zpad later today. However, I believe it is a cdma module and I don't know how well it would work here in the states or if it does GSM.

No need to be sorry. It is a Chinese tablet. Haha. Do you know how well that rom would work on a T2 Zpad? It seems there was some concern because of the partition layout on the T2s.

It might support GSM as the provider im testing it with is not WCDMA.
though i will look into what Mhz range it uses.

I am using a zpad t2 wifi myself, there are zpad 3g too and also gtab. They are all made by malata but even zpads vary from each other in design of motherboard.
the rom is very good and it has a ios like style and vegantab like speed. It is build by chenglu who posted the 3333 and data2loop thread here.
I can flash all roms posted here for gtab with no problem.

I hope (think) that it's running GSM since you've mentioned SIM card.
None of the US providers: Verizon, Sprint have SIM and they are CDMA.
Only ATT and Tmo (GSM) are SIM equipped.
Any help greatly appreciated!!!

[ROM][5-April] Sprint - HTC Arrive - Tango Port - Cooked Rom

This is basically a stock mango shipped rom with tango(7.10.8773.98) features added.
Not unlocked or customized in any way.
English, Sprint only rom.
You must have an unlocked bootloader to load this rom.
This will not overwrite your HSPL.
I plan on releasing a custom version, but this version will let you test the new features.
Warning: I am unsure what the Zune updatablilty will be with this version, so make sure you have a backup plan.
Warning: Flashing this rom is risky and may void your warranty, I am not responsible for any damage using this rom may cause.
If this is for the HTC Arrive nice.If you want a idea of what you should put look at the 7 pro roms so you can get a idea(like option to map what the search button does etc...)

If you can somehow find a way to kill the 160 character limit in SMS that would be very nice. I have spent hours searching through registry edits looking for the solution but haven't found it yet. That and have it come loaded with Bazaar please!
The trophy doesn't have this problem and its a cdma wp7 device.
I admit thats the biggest bs with this phone now.

You mean you can type more than 160 chars and it still sends?

Exactly that. HTC Arrive is the only WP7 phone that cannot go past the 160 character limit in SMS. But you can type up to 1000 characters in MMS I believe. Which some people do as a crude way of fixing it. But nonetheless it'd be great if you could figure out how to get rid of that 160 character limit
Full landscape support... Good luck.
Nice work!
Nice to see some development in the sprint arrive section!
Is there a nice backup app yet for unlocked wp7 devices that everyone is using?
Any news on an unlocked ROM sometime in the near future?

Nice. You plan on adding anything else in the unlocked version?
im thinking a stock tango with the unlock, and then a loaded version with all the bells n whistles
EDIT: Flashing the rom. will update with any bugs as I find them
I'm assuming since this is a straight "stock" Tango port that tethering is not enabled?

Thanks. I'll have to hold out for when it is. I can't afford to flash and lose that. lol
Yep, the only thing I need in a custom Arrive rom is Unlock and Tethering, I believe anything else is just fluff that may in a way break the rom in one way or another. I can do any of the Reg Tweeks I want myself. (BT Audio for Video and max quality mainly).
Unlike roms of the old Windows Mobile days, the stock OS works great out of the box, so messing with things outside of the device (especially one as unique as the CDMA devices now) is not a good idea IMO until things become more standard and tested. Sadly with such little interest in CDMA devices as of yet, we don't have a lot of experience to go off of yet.
(The WiFi issue with the DFT rom is annoying but bypassable. WiFi On, Cellular Data off, Reverse when needed.)
Thanks for all of your hard work in creating this ROM! I was able to use it as a base for my first attempt at cooking my own WP7 ROMs. I got Internet Sharing and full unlock enabled, but the Sprint Zone app and the Marketplace both give me errors about not being able to connect and that apps cannot be installed for my carrier. Have you had any better luck adding features to yours?

I agree.
Tethering is the mot important thing. This HTS T7575/Arrive is the first phone I've owned in 12 years (since I've started owning phones) that could not tether. It's sad. Sprint blames HTC. HTC blames Sprint. I''s actually Sprint, but c'mon. . . I digress.
My favorite ROM of the Windows Mobile days was this on http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-tp-d...om-6-5-x-23563-23138-21914-kitchen-clean.html

Is it possible to flash g9550 firmware on the g955u?

I'm in Hong Kong right now and would like to be able to use VOLTE. Both models are on sd835, but the g9550 has 2 extra gigabyte of ram and dual SIM, also the modem might be different too. So I'm not too sure if this is possible.
seems no one has answered you as of yet. I am currently investigating to see if some parameters of devices rom could be edited. Not sure as of yet, but, will have an answer for you soon enough. will keep in touch.

Definitely not possible, completely different partition tables and the Chinese variant has some extra CDMA and LTE band support to be used in China only.

Actually, China used the GL CP for an earlier firmware it has. Ive been seeing a lot of "cant do's," on this forum and am amazed at how people has set everything to be IMPOSSIBLE. I and another person thats part of these forums have been secretly investigating and am coming up with ideas on how to do things. you are correct as China uses only 2g and 3g on their basebands but are incorrect as to it not being able to work. Research and dig and dig and dig and you will then find the answer. And although my posts and thanks are low does not mean i am a noob. Name change to create a better name for myself with more logic and optimism to contribute what others may feel wont happen. Thank you and have a good evening and its not an attack but a formal gesture to do a bit more research before claiming not possible= impossible.

To answer this question, "YES." Yes it is possible to flash the US version AP, CP( it works but has its issues and wouldn't recommend it) CSC should be able to install. !!NOTE!! Please do not attempt to flash BL as it has different settings scripted into it such as ram, storage, etc. G9550/128gb6gb ram G955U/64gb/4gb ram.
Also Note that if G9550 with G955U firmware boots properly, it has been said to be a bit choppier than normal. What is recommended is using the G955U1 firmware. Also, same as above is ONLY able to be flashed and updates with either version have to be done manually, I, have not tried this myself as i am in the process of this attempt. It has been discussed in foreign forums and has been done.
Please do not attempt if you are unable to come out of a brick or soft brick. I am in no way responsible if you mess up your phone. Good luck
tried flashing through normal odin and a no go. trying the modified Odin, but, before i do further readings say the AP and others have to be slightly modded. will look into this more once i finish up here.
Volte probably won't work if the carrier only supports g9550 though, yeah? Would probably give it a go on the weekend. Cheers.
