Hi, I currently have 1.1 “JFv1.43 for UK RC9 firmware!”
I want to update to 1.5 (cupcake), so can someone please tell me which update I should use as most of the update are for US users?
Also after updating, does the phone retain root access?
Thank you,
Every firmware I have tried has worked fine for me in the UK. At the moment Haykuro's ADP1.5Hr1 with radio 2.22.19.26I is the best so far, really is totally perfect for me.
Make sure you wipe your phone.
Kinda on-topic question...
Why was JF 1.43 RC9 'UK' specifically marked for UK users?

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I knowledge on this subject is very limited, hence these questions.
By using “Haykuro's ADP1.5Hr1 with radio 2.22.19.26I” will the T–mobile internet work and whats the down side to wiping the phone and using unofficial 1.5?

UK APNs and UK Numbering format.
Both the ADP and the RC33 builds have the US numbering format, and as this isn't used in Europe it looks like rubbish.
I would recommend the Haykuro H build. This is the build I am most happy with.
You can use the "official" 1.5H build from haykuro aswell, if you want to have root and some other benefits but still retain the base build from HTC.

why are you talking in bold/big text?
if you've forgotten your password AND secret question then thats a bit silly really isnt it? You'll have to check with google if there is any way of recovering from that.
I have used every single 1.5 release that is available on this forum and I've settled with ADP 1.5H (look at my signature). I'm not installing anything else until JF will make his ADP 1.5 version, which he promised he would.
And please stop writing in large bold fonts -- it's childish.
Sorry for silly questions and bold text and I have now found my password for gMail.
Thanks guys for such prompt reply.
I think I’ll take Karolis and Zappza’s suggestion but can’t wait until JF version. Hope he will release it soon
ok this may be a silly question but if the main difference between RC9 and RC33 is the contacts phone number format, couldnt you simply flash over the rc33(or ADP 1.5) then copy over the uk app for contacts?

I've honestly didn't really check what the big differences are if any. But because RC9 was made for the UK, and it's a fact that UK and US versions of the phone differ a bit, I thought it will not hurt using UK firmware.
However, now I'm using ADP which is obviously American (can tell by the number formatting) and it works fine, so in reality who cares

Yeah, Dude's version had normal number layout. It's ADP 1.5 that has dashes in wrong places.
Thanks guys for all your help/advise. I’ve installed it and so fat its running good, except Toggle Settings doesn’t work.
Hope JF will release 1.5 soon.
If it's any help, I've just put the JF 1.5 build onto a UK phone and everything looks hunky dory!
If you're using the H builds, then there will be no number format at all. all numbers are just presented as they are stored. i have numbers like +44 nnnnnn, 07nnnnnnn, (020)nnnnnnn all over the place. even though this probably indicates the programmer is lazy, it also makes it universal. and I love the camera app so much.
btw. I don't really think you can port the contacts app between system. I guess it's tightly coupled with the phone app.

This was just released in Japan today. Anyway, I just upgraded to it and just want to say it (so far) seems like a nice upgrade from my old X01HT. (which I will miss, though).
The box is the usual Softbank white square (boring) box. Accessories include a charger, mini-usb headphone jack converter, spare stylus and a leather (non-magnetic!) case. No headphones are included; nor a micro SD card
When it is first booted there is about data: 271 MG free (322); Programs: 130 MG free (200)
Included software:
the usual, + mp3 trimmer, cleavevue presentation, jetcet print 5, navitime, quckmark, rss hub -
Nice points:
-The camera takes nice photos (seem to be nice and clear with no blur indoors; can't wait to try it outdoors)
-There are front and rear cameras
-The default rom seems nice (in Japanese of course). There seems to be no way to change it to English though.
-Touch Flo 3D does not seem to suffer from any lag (yet) and the overall speed seems good.
-Included mail program (Softbank mail) is a huge upgrade from the old Softbank mail which was included with the X01HT! It does not seem to suffer from lag or other issues.
Bad Points:
None, yet! ;-) If I find any you can be sure I will update this.
Anyway, I will play around with it for a few days and then attempt to flash to an English rom....

How about the SIM lock?
/mek
Do you mean the X05HT?
I have not had time to check whether it is sim locked or not (I suspect it is).
I did hard spl flash it though -- no problem. Now at least we can upgrade the rom.
Ah, speaking of which, when upgrading I would love to have the new Japanese IE that is used in the original Japanese rom - I suspect that it won’t be too long before somebody like Askul comes up with a cab; it is much better than current solutions, and allows for word prediction when using English, for example.
Likewise, if the Softbank mail settings could be exported, that would be great. Softbank mail in this rom uses a modified version of Arcsoft's MMS ver. 5. (Settings seem to be hidden/unavailable).
Things I have noticed with the Softbank rom after 24 hours:
-slows down periodically (even after manila tweaks)
-Music skips a lot
So, it does look as though I will be upgrading as soon as I can to a better rom.... only wish there was a better mms solution....
damn... yeah, I did mean the x05ht..

I had so much payments left from my X01T that I opted for getting a new SIM and paying for the phone. It was 49.140 yens. So now I ended up with my fifth SIM from SoftBank, they told me that is the max number one can have. So I hope they do not come up with a better phone soon now

That was the first thing I checked when I got home; yes it is SIM locked. But then I did not expect anything else from SoftBank so I was not actually disappointed.

Can you dump the current rom before you start flashing? I don't think I've seen it any where else.
I am actually dumping it as we speak.
Also, see the following thread, regarding Japanese IME. I think that flinx1 is going to try and extract the IME from the Softbank rom and make a .cab.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445550&page=2&highlight=x05ht
Anyway, I will go ahead and upload the raw files as soon as I have finished the dump.
Cheers!
Yea I just saw that you dumped it in that thread. Thanks a lot!
Here is the full rom, all four raw parts. Please note I seemed to have problems with par3. It gave some error which I don't remember, although it did seem to dump the file OK. Please let me know if there are problems with par3 and I will try and redo it.
(pending) somebody told me to remove par3 because it may contain sensitive user information. I will do so and re-post. In the meantime if you did download it, then please ignore any of my personal stuff. ;-)
I'm going to be upgrading next week. Do you know if it ran any dodgy stuff on first run? (Like the X01HT white model did?)
How about the back of the case, is it the bumpy one as shown on Softbank's site, or smooth?
Hey mate, it is sort of rubbery (like the original touch pro case, I think).
There are pictures here: (it seems exactly the same as the softbank one).

If for any reason the phone has to be send back for repairs or some such is there a way to simlock it again? I guess SoftBank would not be very happy receiving unlocked phone (you see I am only worrying about their feelings )
Also won't flashing a new rom lose all the SB settings? I am mostly worrying about the access numbers for internet use as the last time I used my foreign bought Nokia I ended up with 120.000 yen bill for a month's usage...

There are ways to get the softbank connection going for the x01ht. See this. I guess it might work (havent tried it myself)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441400
(edit: seems that it might not work) but see here (post 35) for more on the x04ht and a possible solution to getting softbank settings working: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ighlight=x04ht
It is more that I need input that allows for word prediction (as in the default rom) - in both Japanese/English). With the asukal solution you lose this feature.... there seem to be a few people working on various solutions but nothing has eventuated yet.
Oh, and I did flash it once -- just for fun. It did not seem to make the device any snappier compared to the original anyway. I guess it might be better to wait for somebody to find a solution to the "performance issue":

I read somewhere that RC9 UK version is starting to be rolled out. German RC 9 version already has.
Are theses versions equal? Is there german language available in the RC9 (under phone settings - locale & text - selct locale?
Any efforts on rooting RC9?
I am on RC33 JF at the moment but loved to switch to the European version because of the ability to use market with paid apps. Of course I want to keep root access. German ui would be a nice add-on.

yes, but it will be a matter of time with a german G1. I heard rumours that paid apps will start 3rd of march.

Yes. It came ota last night at 10.30 ish. I can't see that much has changed.
Market place is no longer beta. I don't seem to have voice search or latitude though?
no latitude, how crap, only think i wanted, gotta dump this phone, its a constant let down.
I was hoping this update would bring us latitude, but I cannot understand why we are lagging so far behind the US. It's a real disappointment, one of the main reasons I went for the G1 was because of it's openness and I expected Google to keep on improving it.
Just out of interest, when did you activate your phone? Wondering if it's being rolled out dependent on activation date rather than geography.
Mine was bought of ebay. So don't know when it was originally activated.
For me, the update seems pointless. Nothing new to see!

- Because they didn't have to make sure Amazon Marketplace, MyFaves, Yahoo IM, MSN IM, & AIM would work on it.
- Because a different management team controls Europe than the one that controls the US, and they made different decisions about how long to wait before releasing it.
Pick one.

Of course it will. The one on the HTC page is for the Android Developer Phone, not the US G1. The US G1 version will take away root and add MyFaves, Amazon Market, and Yahoo, MSN, and AOL IM.
i find the htc's 1.5 still really choppy and laggy.. kinda dissapointed with it
I wonder how much of a difference there will be other than Tmobile apps of course.
I got tired of waiting and upgraded myself last night,I also got root access.Tmobile and HTC can shove it up their ass.....we US users pay the highest prices, get the phone first and we have to wait.
The new 1.5 cupcake comes with some nice new features but still kinda laggy, but it´s worth it.
I also see absolutely no reason to wait. JF1.5 ftw.

Having the update coming out first doesn't mean its good, the US may want to modify its update by looking at the other updates to make it perfect
Something that a really like on the 1.5 is the option to select high quality on youtube.
The on-screen keyboard is nice too for quick texting but the buttons are quite small.. since g1 screen is smaller than the iphone.. other than that scrolling is still choppy.. battery still need A LOT of improvements.. btw i dont really know why g1's battery sux so hard since the cpu is clocked at mediocres ~240mhz - ~380mhz max instead of 528mhz.. oh yeah gps is better now.. works even inside buildings for the most part.

i spoke to haykuro earlier and asked about the issues keeping us from getting root on rogers devices. he told me that the boot.img tells the bootloader to boot from a specific memory offset. this is in lines 166 - 173
Code:
166 hdr.kernel_addr = 0x10008000;
167 hdr.ramdisk_addr = 0x11000000;
168 if(saddr) {
169 hdr.second_addr = 0x00300000;
170 } else {
171 hdr.second_addr = 0x10F00000;
172 }
173 hdr.tags_addr = 0x10000100;
now the problem is that the radio on the rogers devices (3.22.20.17) changes the offsets and so we need to figure them out so that a boot.img can be created that will work with our radio.

PDANet looks like a decent idea (although I've read people have had state issues and client resets). I just want autonomy over my device if possible AND still have it work on my network lol ... That shouldn't make much of a difference. Is there any other chips that are different? I would be more interested in the chips that control the radio frequencies. I'm starting to believe that these are firmware controlled by a variable frequency generator.
I can imagine that this is possible because it personnally would make no sense to create a different phone for every market. Just use a different firmware to change the phone frequency.
UPDATE - Nevermind. After looking closer the main Qualcomm chip is also different. This probably controls the frequency.

once again it has to do with the amplifiers' frequency.
look at this pic: http://i.cmpnet.com/eetimes/news/online/2008/10/igoogle_2.jpg
then look at my pics and compare the two amplifiers. different model. look up the model numbers, different frequencies. if you take a closer look you will see the antenna switch chip is also for different frequencies, plus there are way too many differences on the radio board (resistors/capacitors)
also take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=525060
Interestingly, that Qualcomm RTR6285 transceiver looks like it probably CAN do the full range of 3G frequencies, see the datasheet at: http://www.datasheetpro.com/268132_download_RTR6285_datasheet.html
What I have been wondering for a few days is what would happen if someone took the RADIO rom from a Canadian Rogers Dream and used it to flash their T-Mobile G1 - would that unlock the right frequencies in the phone? After having seen the datasheet, and notwithstanding the slight differences in transceiver numbers, I can't see why not.
well i promise to try with my old t-mobile G1, when we get the radio...
I have nothing to do with it anyways

Thanks skittleguy. I am playing with it right now. I thought we are not supposed to be able to back the ROM up without root? But my device says "Backup complete!"!!!!! Did you see the same thing and was it a complete backup for you?
EDIT: the backup folder contains boot.img, cache.img, data.img, misc.img, nandroid.md5, recovery.img, system.img
Total about 198MB
If this is a complete backup, I don't see any reason to prevent me from playing with it!
So as a little update, thanks to the hard work of Amon_RA (and Haykuro mostly, please don't kill me), the Rogers Magic has been rooted.

I also donated and registered here.
I do hope this effort succeeds; it would be my very first cell phone that I can tweak to my heart's content.
My biggest requirement is tethering, but of course there are others. I also hear that tethering might be possible without even rooting, using PDANet from June Fabrics.
I will stay tuned,
G-man

i use pdanet on my dream with no errors....apparently you just turn off ur wifi on ur laptop and that is supposed to help in keeping it from disconnecting...i tried that, and it seems to work. the only problem now is that it is saying pdanet is expiring...so i think i need to find a solution for that

Updates tend to be staggered so keep trying. This is, of course, assuming you're on 1.27.161.1 at present
Yay!!
I'm downloading now
About time! Though having said that, the unbranded one was only rolled out last week, so not too long after I guess?

It's only a small update, some bug fixes and the like. It's normal
Ah I see -
I'm not sure where I read, but for some reason I thought it was about 330 Mb!?
hmm...
Ok, well it's installed and now loading up
Will give you feedback in a few mins
Hmm....
Nothing spectacular at the moment...
Scrolling is smooth (it was smooth initially anyways though)...
Got a score of 1900 on Quadrant, whereas I was getting 1800 up till now...
Something is synchronising constantly for the last few minutes (the two arrows in a circle), that's about it at the moment
Really need to test this at home - hopefully the signal issue is fixed! (Kept dropping randomly)

The full RUU is about 400MB but the OTA is small. The article was for a test OTA and was quite large though
Since update
360 voda music tab in music player. Can't remove it
Video player sound is fixed after testing avi file.
Feels more smother.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App

Can this not be removed via root or editing the music apk?

You caught me Hope you don't mind , I though my sig looked a buit Naff with nothing in it, lol
but yea, I wish voda would let the OS be, yea ok maybe add an app thats of use, but messing about with stock apps, thats not what I am paying for. I am hoping that rooting s-off will get rid of this vodafone restriction.
I a ( and have asked in the QA section) if it was possible to do what you could do with the old nokias, and thats edit the phones product code so that it would install the offical OTA update (i.e the Eu standard) rather than the branded one.
Also for Ireland
Also now available for Vodafone Ireland. They're possibly the same version of firmware though.

I don't mind at all mate!!
The gold card that worked on previous HTC handsets would've done the job here too but seems it doesn't with the Sensation at present (which worked in much the same way as old Nokia handsets in that it hid the phone real product code)
hopfully they are working on the gold card, I have seens ome threads regarding development and testing of the gold card, but I assume this is more likly to work when s-off has been achieved.
Once we have S-OFF we can go custom so stock RUUs will be pointless. Just use a custom ROM based on the stock ROM!
Have they done anything sneaky in it that will effect s-off later or is the H-Boot the same? I know the last update for the Legend from Vodafone made it a lot more awkward to root it and at the moment neither Htc nor Vodafone have said if Vodafone will allow s-off. Just a bit scared to update and be ****ed later.
well i asked this on the vodafone forum and the mods replied stating that they don't see why Vodafone would not allow the s-off update to go through. I guess its a good sign when you dont just get the generic 'We don't know at this time'
also I am guessing with a modded rom, this would be better than a stock rom, yet how would you go about getting updates for a modded rom? Just wait for a modder to release an update, also with a modded rom, do they just use the base rom i.e euro standard.
