Little Questions - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Good Morning.
Sry for my bad English, i´am from Germany^^ I have many little Questions about Flashing the HTC Magic. First i like to Backup my Htc Magic (Vodafone) Firmware completly that i can recover the htc later(if i have problems whatever). Must i root the Htc to backup it? Second i woud like flash the 6.0 Rom from haykuro, how flash i the phone right?
Thanks
z3ko

you can use the app "Mybackup" to save and restore all critical user data and apps.
How to flash:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting
But just take a look around and you'll find many other tutorials, like this one in german language.

Am I correct?

After reading, reading and reading I still am very confused.
Just a question and maybe I did not read that particular thread, sorry in advance, but if I understand correctly:
1. I extract my ROM
2. Change a certain cab from dutch to english
3. Rebuild my ROM
4. I can than load that ROM without the CID unlock HDSPL thingy
Correct?
Yes? Okay I start building.
No? Any other change to get an english non edited/tweaked Rom on my TyTn II?
The more I write the more I start knowing the answer. I think.
One thing I know for sure is that you do need the "CID Unlook HDSPL thingy". Without that you cannot flash a ROM so if you're going to do any flashing make sure you HardSPL your device otherwise you can render you device inoperable.
As for a ROM you can dump your ROM to have a backup so if you need to restore it later for warranty purposes you can rebuild from that. Or you can use the dumped ROM to create your custom ROM.
Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349354.
It's a very easy way to create a custom ROM.
Good luck.
Well, what are you trying to do? "non-edited" and "Tweaked" will not go in the same sentence... Also I see "change a certain cab from Dutch to English" and I get totally confused like you are... What are you really trying to do? Do you want to flash a tweaked English "cooked ROM" onto your device? That's easy - there are a couple of ROMs you can try out: Dutty's, Q-Mobile, Schaps, Gullum... or do you want to learn how to cook your own ROM? _Alex_ has put together an awesome cooking tutorial and Kitchen tools for you to use so I suggest you read those again! In either case you'll need to first unlock your device using the great pof's HardSPL/CID unlock utility...else you'll have a very expensive brick on your hands! But again, my question: what are you really trying to do?
I just want my Dutch version turned into an English version. That's all. Nothing more nothing less. No additional changes to my ROM. Just another language. Easy isn't it.

noob questions about ROM flashing

hi,
i have an HTC touch (the 128/256 would be Elfin right?) to which i want to flash another ROM.
well i'm a total noob at this so i don't really understand where or how to start and what to do;
1-is the process reversible?in other words can i downgrade to my original ROM (downloaded it from HTC website)?
2-is it necessary that i upgrade/change the IPL,SPL,USPL,...etc?
3-when doing a CID unlocking,is it safe?or what's the worst case scenario?
4-does the ROM contain a radio by default or should i install it seperately?and is it necessary to upgrade/change it?
sorry for asking too many questions, but i wanna know how to do it right
thanks

1.) Yes, once you Hard Spl your phone you can flash any rom, custom or OEM
2.) Yes, you must change from a stock spl/uspl to a custom one.
3.) Yes, For the most part it is safe, but like driving your car, accidents happen and the worst case is you brick your phone.
4.) some roms contain radios and some roms do not, you can always flash your favorite radio after the rom flash.
Don't worry this is the right section to ask questions. Read this thread and other threads in the upgrade section. Re read until it makes sense and then go for it.

thanks a lot denco, your help is really appreciated .
i did some digging myself about this, and i ran through this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408637
and now things are starting to become more clear, but now i have another questions:
1-if i dump my IPL/SPL,can i restore them again over the stock ones (in case i wanna sell my phone or something like that)?
2-it seems a bit dumb ,but i thought CID unlocking and USPL changing are 2 completely different things, but now i see that they are two different descriptions for the same thing,am i right?
thanks

Yes you can restore everything to stock for warranty return, providing it is not your usb connector that is th problem.
They used to be two different things, but now with the new Uspls/Spls it is the same thing
so from what i understood, all i have to do is upgrade my USPL and dump my stock IPL/SPL for restoring purposes (or can i do that without having to dump them?) and i'm ready to flash...right?

UK Vodafone Magic Root & Rom summary/help.

OK just spent a significant amount of time reading your forums and im nearly there just wanted some clarification on rooting and choice of roms for a UK Vodafone Magic as there doesnt seem to be one collection of advice for UK voda's. Here's how I think it goes please correct me!!
1. Root using haykuro’s method and files in the wiki. (Did read a post about uk voda users then having to flash a rom because reboot didnt work fully.)
2. Update the SPL according to the same wiki article. This is where its hazy!!! I am now left with a rooted magic with stock rom, (ie uk voda in my case.) an updated spl, allowing me to now do a full nandroid backup of stock rom or only a backup of installed apps only???? See where im getting confused??
If I then choose to not flash a rom to my Magic I am now running my stock rom (or a haykuro rom.) but with the added bonus of it being rooted, which in-turn allows me to run those useful apps available in the store, bluex, setCPU etc???????
God am I going mad!!

You and me both I'm in exactly the same situation as you, with the same decisions to make and same questions. I personally wouldn't mind installing a stock ION rom (or maybe the Japanese version since I speak English/Japanese) but essentially would like to know what you would like to know! Before I change my SPL though, I'd like to know if I can back it up.

Thanks for the fast response, this is the wiki i was referring to in my original post a helpful guide it is but it still doesn't answer the question, after I complete all the steps listed. Which rom will be on my phone?? the original rom?? (Vodafone in my case) or the haykuro rom??

I haven't rooted mine yet either.
As a vetran of WMO I am a bit confused, but basically I think you can't root and keep your original Vodafone rom.
To do this, someone would have had to have produced a rooted version of this rom and no one has.
you can install the latest generic ion rom rooted.
if you want to go back to vodafone you'll have to find the rom.
The other annoying thing is that you can't do a rom backup without rooting it .... duh!
if I am wrong, someone please correct me!!
As i feared!! so the rom for rooting your magic also replaces the system with the haykuro ion rom. So as yet there is now way of keeping/backing up the original voda uk magic rom. (To revert back to at a later stage or if you f**k it up!!)
So this now leaves us uk voda magic users with the question which rom to go for which has the same functions as the uk voda rom. Ive read about the main ones ion r3 lite, nk02s htc beta 3, the rodgers and most recently the hero rom. Sounds like the community is really geting going!!
I am looking for :
1. wifi
2. bluetooth
3. 3G
4. Google sync
5. camera (as ive heard some roms dont support it.)
6. market (once again some roms with problems.)
7. superuser (obviously.)
8. Location
9. Voice is a bonus but not essential as uk voda does not have it
OK so i want it all lol, So far the Ion r3-lite looks the most suited but i cannot confirm the camera works so come on you clever ppl help us uk voda's out!!
Thx

look, the first thing on this site to use is the search fuction. You can backup your current rom with nandroid backup. so please search before posting

but it appears you need to root before nandroid
and to successfully root, you need to install ion, otherwise it won't boot
isn't this catch 22 ?
Thanks Brian im probably going to give it a go tomorrow and go with the ion r3 lite rom to start!!
But once again to clarify you just pointed me to a link showing howto back up the rom by using the updated spl and nandroid backup function, to do this your magic must already be rooted and as you stated earlier by rooting the magic you will therefore replaced the vodafone rom with the ion rom. So a backup at this stage would be of the ion rom and not the stock vodafone rom. Am I correct???
If I get stuck i will be sure to take you up on your offer or further help. Thx
double post sorry colonel seems like your understanding what im saying!

whe you type in the command at stage 11, the phone should go into recovery mode and you should then see the option to backup you current rom. this will backup onto your storage card. if you dont see that option then DONOT update
Thanks

rooting your magic does not replace the user interface bit of the rom. You can root it without going to ION or anything else

1. will try the backup *done thanks*
2. * the guide does not replace the firmware, and my phone booted ok *
many thxs all
OK colonel so you have a success you followed the guide at " http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting "
................and didn't have a problem at the reboot command?? (So no need to revert to the follow on guide at " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524925 " which would mean having to replace the standard voda rom.)
So you now have a rooted uk voda magic running on the original rom?? As well as a backup of the original rom, meaning that you can now flash custom roms to your hearts content with the reassurance of being able to flash back to the original voda rom if you should wish.

indeed - exactly as you say
I had no issue with the rebooting problem mentioned elsewhere
although I don't intend on running a custom rom yet.
I did it purely to get root access, inititially to follow superxnova's excellent guide to get other language fonts (I wanted hebrew):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480964
** Make sure you select the option to make a backup after the command typed in step 11 **
One other thing I would say, the instructions are precise until step 14&15
instead of doing step 14 & 15 I went into fastboot mode by - step 10 (then back button), typed the command in step 11,then pressed update. After update i selected reboot.
not sure if that made any difference as "home + power" does the same thing
3g Gone
Hi - i've managed to root today and to install the new some new roms - thanks to all of the wonderful advice here. One thing I have noticed is that I lose my 3g capability with any rom apart from my original vodafone rom. I'm not too bothered as I can restore from a nandroid backup. Would be nice to be able to use the SuperHero v2 build i've currently got working (apart from the 3g).
Thx.

you probably need to refresh the apn
do some searching to find out how
I have to say, i am not in a rush to change the vodafone rom
its pretty fast and unbranded.
When I had a winmo I was keen to get a new rom for speed and newer builds/features, but don't really feel the need now
perhaps i will later!

[Q] [NOOB BEGGING 4 HELP] Proper Arabic + RTL Support???

Noob here.
Hello everyone,
I bought my HTC Sensation from eBay couple of months ago, it's S-ON and the available locales are all south east asian (Thai, Vietnamese, english (Malaysia), etc...)
Arabic works well on HTC Sense; meaning the messages widget, friend steam widget, mail widget, weather widget, etc... all display connected arabic letters.
However, going inside any application (messages, mail, internet, friend stream, etc..) arabic is shown as disconnected letters and left to right (whether reading or writing)
Imagine having to read like this all the time: ,O L L E H
it's really frustrating
Tried installing More Locale 2, didn't work.
Any noob-proof guide is appreciated, I'm willing to wipe all my data, go S-OFF, change ROM, even take a day off work and spend the whole day with the phone connected to the computer if i know there's a way to solve this once and for all.
Please save the suffering of myself and the rest of the Arab world!

you should factory reset your phone and see if that persists....shutdown the phone, press power+vol down, go to factory reset using vol down do that
To the best of my knowledge Factory Reset will not do it.
You will need to S-Off your handset and do one of the following:
1. Install the Middle East RUU file. This one has the number in the format:
1.xx.415.x. To insatll a RUU file you will also need Super CID.
2. Install one of the numerous custom ROMs of this form. Most of them are Deodexed and support Arabic/Hebrew and RTL reading/writing. You do not need Super CID for this. The ones I can recommend are ARHD and InsertCoin.
Good Luck.
also, since you are willing to S-OFF, try leedroid's rom. it supports arabic natively, of course you need to do all the rooting process first. there are a lot of tutorial here that does that. my suggestion is first familiarize yourself in the rooting procedures here so in the long run u can do what you want with your phone, just really need to research/read articles here in xda.

Sounds beautifully easy, where can I find the RUU file? (I guess you mean it's the stock ROM for ME devices, right?)
Oh and, I have an idea in my head that super CID generally is a bad thing, not quiet sure why though. What are the cons of doing that?

I messed up big! Please help

Hey there!
So I have an HTC Sensation with an oficial ICS update HTC Sense e.t.c as it should be.
12 Hours back I found out that it's possible to root, flash, use custom ROM ( with two words get rid of the HTC Sense which I really don't like )
So excited and thoughtful of what I am doing I just rushed into reading tons of posts and ways on how to do everything and after a few hours I thought I am ready to work!
Yes, but NO! I think I did most of the things correctly but at the end I just rushed through it and I think I messed up big time! I tried so many things to recover my system but I just can't do anything ( I only get to HTC logo, and then it's an infite loop of reboots )
So I rooted the devide, unlocked the HBOOT, downloaded everything that was mentioned but I didn't turn S-OFF
In my rush to complete my EPIC QUEST I just wiped data/cache e.t.c and tried to put on a custom ROM but I only got to the HTC logo and that's it!
Afterwards I read about "how to boot custom ROM with S-ON" so I tried to manipulate the boot.img ( somehow I don't really remember what I was suppose to do ) so after this operation I moved to the realm of "endless HTC logo loops" and that's where I am stuck for the past 3-4 hours.... :silly:
If someone can help me fix my phone I'd be very thankful! Please be kind on my noobness
Regards!
P.S. - don't ask me if I did a backup, because ofcourse I DID NOT! ( which I regret! ) will do for the future
