Root QnA

I was wondering if it was possible to un-root a G1. I'm honestly having the hardest time with it. I've downgraded to RC29 but when trying to add "RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)" it doesn't want to add when ... I followed the steps on the step by step of adding it and it always hangs up and wont add when in recovery mode while pressing Alt-S to apply the update.
-Could this be a problem because for some reason while i was putting in the info into Telnet it hung up at the recovery.img portion. Sorry new about moding phones... Cars i know phones i don't
I'm in the LA area if anyone else is and is willing to on there free time show me how i keep screwing up. Thanks

All you gotta do is reflash the DREAIMG.NBH file onto your G1 and it'll update by itself, which means you'll be back to stock.
Edit: Are you by any chance unzipping the file? If you are, you have to leave it unzipped and just rename to update.zip in the SD card.

no i'm leaving it update.zip like the set by step said. And how do i refresh it? Im on yahoo messenger by the same name on here if your on this to help me. Thank You

Why would you want to unroot your phone? But if you really want to then just flash back to RC29 then wait for the phone to get the OTA updates.

I don't want to unroot but im unable to add 1.5 like i intended on doing. So right now im stuck with rc 29 and not cuppycake like i want. I wanted to re-up back to 33 like it said in the posting i was using as step by step and it wont allow me to update

I just got my G1 a few days a go I was reading from the Official t-mobile web site that the up-grade for android will be out randomly to customers and their expecting that all of us customers will have it by the end of May
Now should I go thru all the work of rooting my G1 and getting cupcake or just wait for the upgrade?
Is there a difference between the two of them?
In the upgrade to 1.5 I don’t see or read anything about the apps getting install and running from the memory card does anyone about this?

Thats only available to rooted phones.

It all depends... If youre ONLY rooting to get cupcake, I would just say wait. See this link for some reasons why you would want to root and step by step instructions:

You can render your phone useless however while doing this. So BE CAREFUL... Youve been warned!

how to unroot my g1
So I rooted my phone and installed JF1.5 and my SD card is now acting a bit weird, and I want to undo the root and mod so I can go back to factory. How do I do this? Is this even possible now?

Interesting root problem
Hey guys, been playing in a cupcake irc channel, while we are all waiting for ota cupcake, helping half a dozen or so people root, and i came across one that i figured i'd post here, and see if anyone has any ideas. Obviously i don't have his phone in hand, so i can't be 100% sure that he isn't flubbing a step, but he seems compitent enough to follow simple instructions. He has a stock g1 pvt board with an 8 gig transcend class 6 sdcard, we have formatted this card many times, we get through the nbh file, installs fine, telnetd steps no problem, put the update.zip on the sd card and boot into the bootlader, and everything goes hey wire, it cant find nor install the update.zip, we have redownloaded different spl's to try, triple verified the files weren't named update.zip.zip. the only odd thing i found about his phone, was in one of the threads on here, people were checking the output of the mount command, and for some reason for his sd card his output is /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 where everyone esles is p0 or p1 i cant quite remember. anyhow any ideas or suggestions would be great and no he does not have another sdcard at the moment for us to get it done with

I just manually updated my phone to the new cupcake 1.5 US version. I would like to root my phone but don't I have to wait until the modify version comes out? Or can I root right now by downgrading and then manually upgrading to stock cupcake again? Will upgrading with the stock cupcake update wipe out the root?

It starts opening it but then says

why does this sound like you are trying to apply an OTA update to a root'd phone?!? first thing .. i don't know that this update will function on the magic .. this is a G1 update file

I don't know if my phone's rooted. I just know that I have a HTC Magic with prerelease version CRA71C, and that I have to get rid of it to get future OTA updates.

yea .. you're looking for the wrong thing .. i googled that reference and it says that is the Dev version of HTC Magic .. check the Sapphire branch here on XDA .. the dream build is not going to help you much

i've just put my phone old HTC G1 back to rc7(UK) as i'm selling it
and as soon as i put rc7 I got the updates OTA and applied that
but on reboot I found that my custom boot splash was still there with my name and stuff so i fixed that by rooting it again and replacing the splash1 and splash2 with UK t-mobile G1 logo
then I re-flashed again with RC7 and I'm not getting any updates
I found this website

with what looks like all the OTA updates and I've managed to put RC8 on and still not getting any OTA updates still
so I tried the next one on the list CRB17

What kind of phone do u have

I have a UK HTC/T-mobile G1 . its not a dev version ...afaik

i found the answer

it has all the updates just download 1 by 1 and rename to update.zip and flash
now rocking 1.6

That's actually explained in step 3.

Hey youneek great guide But could you put a warning for the flashing of haykuro's SPL? The SPL has a chance of bricking your phone if you don't have the latest radio and a PVT board. Even if you have both of those your phone can still be bricked Mind putting that up there for others? Thanks!

does the /system/sd folder exist in console if you don't do this first:
mount system
and no need to 'cd' .. simply do:
rm -r /system/sd/*
if you are looking to delete everything on the second partition

great guide - if this was out begore I started I would of been running HERO with the quickness.
But still im glad i learned the hard way now i can get myself out of tuff situations

this is a great tutorial.
i also suggest to give people the option on what spl to flash. i prefer the hard. that new special one is dangerous for noobs

Excuse me. I'm just a newbie and going to buy a G1. You said G1 may be bricked during update without a PVT board. How can I check what the board is to avoid? and what's HardSPL?? Thanks a lot.

Always at the step where I have downloaded the dreamimg file to the SDCard > shutdown the phone > then restart it holding the camera and power on buttons.
The grey 'bootloader' screen comes up, does a configuration check then flashes up the "not allow" message and dumps to the multi-coloured screen. At that point I have to pull the battery out to restart.
I'm going to go out today and purchase another SDCard. This one is a Sandisk 1mg card and I've read that certain Sandisk cards will not comply with 'rooting' instructions.

Please help with ROM flashing [Asus P320]

I have an ASUS P320.
During flashing a Windows 6.5 ROM, it went bad and now I am not able to boot the phone or do anything.
I have tried 2-3 ROMs to re-flash by putting them in my SD card, but every time it says "Read SD busy !"
I also tried to re-flash it using original 4.10 ROM from official ASUS website but here is where I get stuck up:
BTLR 3.1
Init SD Control
IPL: Insert SD Card
Start SD Init
Get MBR success
start find images
can't find galaxymini-ond.raw !
find 850_GAX_SD.bin !
can't find FLASH.BIN !
can't find GSM.BIN !
can't find EXT_ROM.NB0 !
valid package percentage: 100
Read SD busy !
No GSMFFS
Total 3 images in package
FLASH.BIN in package !
GSM.BIN in package !
EXT_ROM.NB0 in package !
after all these msgs I waited for too long, but nothing happens. I repeated this many times, but it stucks after this and I am not able to write any new ROM anyhow on my phone.
I am really really in big trouble as this is my only phone and I am really depressed. Plz can anyone just help me with how to proceed to write a new or any old ROM on my phone? I will be really thankful

I kept the 850_GAX_SD_Enc ROM in the same folder as this tool and then run Split P320 ROM.exe
But P320binDEC.exe shows application error. I am running this under Windows XP. Please help me.

Then I had put all files in root of SD card.
It shows:

I had the prob same as u.
What I did was installed 4.15 WWE than tried to upgrade to WM6.5 from 4.10ZHH WM6.1, and the errors came out.
I even had the paragraph saying
"This concludes the beta test of this
software release. Thank you very much for
your time and effort in helping make this a
great product for our customers.
To obtain a newer release or futher
information,please revisit the web site that
you used to obtain your current beta
release."--------then it got stuck and the only buttons that worked were the volume and reset buttons. And I thought its done that all I could do was to sell it.
But then I split the 850_GAX_SD_Enc.bin(which was from a different language 4.15 zip,referring above), the following came up:
850_gax_sd.bin
GSM.BIN
FLASH.BIN
EXT_ROM.NB0
and others, but I only copy these 4 into SD card cause they were the things that stated "can'"t find"' and I couldnt find galaxymini-ond and GSM.RAM.....and yes I did put 850_gax_sd.bin in instead of the capital one(accidentally!!!cus i thought they were the same, but apparently not...ANYWAY I DID!)
then i inserted the card, flash reset(volume down + reset) it,
it took quite a while to install(abt 10-15 mins)
like u said a pure white screen occurred and it frozen.
then I press the switch on button on top and restart the device...
the old version came up again with 4.15ZHH and WM 6.1 (green) and everything got back to default just like the very first day I bought it.
this is all i did, i think the different between us was that i used a different language of 4.15 and the 850_gax_sd.bin..... not very sure on yours but it worked on mine somehow... I'm not an expert on computer and programmes stuff, and i really cant tell if errors are still left in the device after what i did, so beware of this prob if you follow.

Put the rom file in your sd card again u might have succeded not to get the entire file

Thats the reason why i'm asking here. Here are Devs like you or Albe95. The Reason i'm asking is my Updater Script is strangly corrupted and i dont know why it happens. My problem is now, i build up the ROM on _alexndrs DEVBASE, the Base can be used (without asking for permission to use it) for Custom Roms and i'm a noobie on write an Updater Script for my Rom. I hope that anyone can me Teach or provide me an Updater Script without Aroma Installer and only Wipe Dalvik and Cache Partition commands in it. When anybody can do that i will donate him.
Its my first own Rom and the People who using it are very Happy with it.

try this script
But it will wipe everything, you can adjust it by your self
Just delete the unwanted mount and umount script, i dont have a time, sorry

This updater Script can't work, cause there are no symlinks and the wrong permissions mate.
