Find a newer thread - G1 Android Development

I stopped updating this information a long time ago. I recommend finding a more recent thread...

Very good job, exactly what I have been looking for.

Very good job!

Great instructions.....

WOW!! Wish i had something like this 2 months ago when i got my G1. Nice of you to put this together. Definatly going to help out a lot of people and save them a SH!T load of time and head aches! STICKY!!

Don't you have to downgrade to RC29?
Or is that obsolete now?

Wow this would've definitely come in handy a few weeks ago. But what took me a few hrs to gather by reading posts this one thread explains it all. Glad you took the time to write this. Hopefully a more stable hero comes out too to update this thread with.

That's actually explained in step 3.
3.) Download DREAIMG.nbh and put copy to the phone (don't put in a folder) http://bit.ly/wfAOO
That file is the RC29. Good looking out though.

Hi! Good!!
When the phone reboots, you can hold home and power to boot into cyanogen. There is an option to upgrade from ext2 to ext3.

OK .. I keep getting the same result.
When I restart the phone and the grey bootload screen comes up, it does a check and replies with "not allow" Anyone know what to do here?

Hey youneek great guide But could you put a warning for the flashing of haykuro's SPL? The SPL has a chance of bricking your phone if you don't have the latest radio and a PVT board. Even if you have both of those your phone can still be bricked Mind putting that up there for others? Thanks!

does the /system/sd folder exist in console if you don't do this first:
mount system
and no need to 'cd' .. simply do:
rm -r /system/sd/*
if you are looking to delete everything on the second partition

great guide - if this was out begore I started I would of been running HERO with the quickness.
But still im glad i learned the hard way now i can get myself out of tuff situations

this is a great tutorial.
i also suggest to give people the option on what spl to flash. i prefer the hard. that new special one is dangerous for noobs

Excuse me. I'm just a newbie and going to buy a G1. You said G1 may be bricked during update without a PVT board. How can I check what the board is to avoid? and what's HardSPL?? Thanks a lot.

Youneek thanks for your reply,
Always at the step where I have downloaded the dreamimg file to the SDCard > shutdown the phone > then restart it holding the camera and power on buttons.
The grey 'bootloader' screen comes up, does a configuration check then flashes up the "not allow" message and dumps to the multi-coloured screen. At that point I have to pull the battery out to restart.
I'm going to go out today and purchase another SDCard. This one is a Sandisk 1mg card and I've read that certain Sandisk cards will not comply with 'rooting' instructions.
Cheers, elzee

how can down rc30 to rc29 & get root @ ubuntu ?

hello i am a new use for G1
Read the stickies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466455
it is being discussed in 3 different threads right now as we speak.... once you download the .zip to downgrade it make sure you UNZIP it and place on sd card... most people say reformat the card to fat32 and then copy the dreamimg.nbh to the cards base directory then poweroff your phone. power it up while holding the camera button it will boot into spl loader.... wait and it will tell you to press power button to flash. to soft reset once it completly finishes it will tell you........ press the send + menu + end to soft reset and your rc29...
if you are not on tmobile i dont know how to exactly set back up your phone.

Honestly, the stickies kinda suck. There needs to be (but currently does not exist) one post that explains the process from start to finish. Still, the stickies explain how to perform most of it. It's 80% instruction 20% intuition at the moment.

Apps to SD card app

Hey all,
I know I just put up my tutorial on how to do this but hopefully this will make things easier for everyone. I'd still suggest doing a nandroid backup first just to make sure but I tested this on my phone so it should work. Just run the app and if this is the first time moving your apps to your sd card(and you want to keep the ones you have) leave the checkbox checked. Otherwise uncheck it. Then just press the buttons that correspond to what you want to do. Enjoy
In order to use this you MUST:
1: Have an apps-to-sd ROM
2: Have your sd card partitioned correctly with FAT32 first and ext2 second.
3: Have busybox already installed to /system/xbin
NOTE: I'll try to help as much as I can but I can't take responsibility for anything this does to your phone. I'm pretty sure nothing bad will happen and nothing irreparable can happen but gotta say these things just to be sure anytime I'm messing with root permissions.
ANOTHER NOTE: I'll put this up in the market for $1. It'll remain free here but people can donate to me that way.
YET ANOTHER NOTE: I've managed to get a new method working that's a lot more stable and flexible. I will keep this thread here but won't be maintaining it.
EDIT: Moving data is too unstable, I've removed the option. It doesn't force close anymore when you don't have the setup right, it just gives an error and wont let you do anything, so that's better.
Tried it this morning and worked great. You might add a pop up at the end of moving apps to restart the device. When less experienced people use it, they won't know to do that I'm afraid.

OH SHOOT!!! I fixed this problem on the market one but forgot to put it back up on here. Umm... for now no1 should use the one posted here, until I can get home and post the updated one. OR if you still want to fix this and don't much just a bit of fiddling in the recovery terminal, after moving apps to sd, restart in recovery mode and do this:
Code:
mount data
ln -s /system/sd/app /data/app
For anyone who cares about such things, the problem is that it deletes the /data/app folder and then makes a symlink, which sounds ok, except that every super user command has to be run through the whitelist app... which no longer exists. So it's not able to set up the link and all hell breaks loose.
i did use the 1 from here
it says ln: /data/app: file exists
if i already had apps2sd, tried to upgrade my phone from 5.0 to 5.01G, so I wiped...then data.img wouldn't flash over...if i do this, will my apps show up again?

Yes, just uncheck the checkbox. But you might want to read the note that I just posted, there's a known problem with it that has a fix but requires going into the recovery terminal. I'll post the updated version of this app that doesn't have that bug tonight.

you had the "stale NFS handle" right? I'm not really sure what's going on but something in your phone's file system sounds like it went screwy. Maybe someone like JF or LucidREM could help? Your problem goes way over my head and I'm guessing the same is true of a lot of people on here unfortunately.

jf rom
Ok question I know it says apps to sd rom is needed does this mean only haykuro roms? I have a jfrc33 1.42 and I could do apps to sd using this rom (planning on doing it tonight my 8gig class 6 card arrived) so my question is can I just use this app or do I need to do all the steps manually

It should work on any apps to sd ROM. This includes LucidREM's modified JF ROMs. If you're gonna be manually changing it into an apps to sd, then I would think it would work but can't promise it. I wasn't able to figure that out when I tried so I'm not 100% sure that they work the same but I would imagine they would. Again, though, the one posted here has that known bug which will be fixed after I get home from work.
Short answer(s):
Haykuro's ROM: definitely works
LucidREM ROM: Don't have it to test it but almost assuredly works
Self-modified: probably works?
Sounds good I wasn't doing it till later tonight anyways (stuck at work also) also is it still a good idea to keep ext2 parititon less then 2gb like lucid reported on his tutorial

How and why do you people know all of this?

I had a friend root my phone and I know if I want to flash a new build I rename the file update and drag it to my android folder then restart the phone a certain way and press alt s to load the build.
I love my g1 and the 1.5 build Im using but I cant get any further because Ive scoured the internet and these threads and I just cant figure out what all of this computer jargon means and I dont understand how anybody does know without taking classes in it.
I think I should make a nandroid backup and partition my sd card to run apps but good lord what does this mean (regarding nandroid)???---
"anyone who has root on their G1 and has the engineering/dev spl bootloader [1] (or has a dev phone) + a recovery image with busybox and adbd running as root [2"
and this (regarding sd partition)???---
pre-requisite "You created the FAT32 / EXT2 combo partitions" I mean this is a PRE-REQUISITE! I found a thread regarding the fat/ext deal and didnt understand it either.
I know nobody is here to babysit but is there some website somebody can direct me to to begin understanding what Im reading, I mean I read through the sd partition for dummies thread and I literally understood MAYBE 10% of the words, if thats for "dummies" im clearly the "dumbest"
I have the will I just dont have the way, ive typed the language i dont understand into every search engine I know of and Ive learned nothing. You guys are born geniuses
and what the hell's a "script"
No offense intended, but I don't think you should root your phone or carry out any of the procedures outlined in the developer forum. Following instructions to the letter is important when you are performing unauthorized and unsupported hacks, and most of those instructions assume an intermediate-to-advanced level of computing understanding.
As far as "where you learn it", I assume it varies from person to person. Although in nearly all cases, you learn it slowly by absorption when you are immersed in computing culture. Eventually if you lurk enough and see a word enough times in a particular context, you gain an understanding of what it means without being explicitly told.
You learn as you read through forums and threads and asking questions. If you're lucky, someone will explain it to you.
A script is like a programming language that controls a software application.
Nandroid is a tool or script you can use to backup your phone. It takes a bit of knowledge to restore from the backup though and requires a separate thread
You can read all about SPL's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
Can't help you with busybox/adb/recovery image right now.
FAT32 and EXT2 are just file type partitions. Think of a hard drive as a box. You put a divider cutting the box down the middle to split it into 2 compartments so each compartment can store something different. That's essentially what you do to a SD card when you create a FAT32 and EXT2 partition.
I learned all this by totally screwing things up, then reading, and reading some more. Then using the search function of the forum and of course more reading.
Now I understand a good deal about ADB, terminal, and the many, many other things that come with a rooted phone,,
I don't agree with the post that said if you don't get it don't try it.....
But that is cause I learn by doing...
As mentioned, doing this is a little complicated. The wrong step can temporarily brick your phone and then you'd have to know how to fix it, which in a way also requires a certain level of knowledge. It's best to learn and absorb the information first and to NOT be in a hurry to implement what you learn.

This will be invaluable to fixing a botched up hack. Although, many times you'll also have to wipe (alt-w) to clear out your personal settings and personal data.

Nandroid is a backup program build into the... "recovery mode" for lack of a better description. It's where you do the alt-s at. Alt-b creates a backup of your system. To restore it, you must read the thread sticky that walks you through it.

As mentioned, FAT32 and EXT2 are types of filesystems. Think of it as being told to store a box in a wearhouse. The filesystem, in a sense, would be like the isles, shelves, etc. that help you not just have a giant pile of stuff.
This is asking you to have an SD card that has been partitioned off into two partitions (a giant wall in the middle of the wearhouse) where on one side you have one way of storing things that is easily understandable by the average joe (windows, linux, apple) and one side that is much more complicated but much more efficient to store things that only the wearhouse manager understand (linux.)

No. We all started somewhere. Nobody here came here and understood everything over night. Most of us have YEARS of experience in the computer field, if not decades. As far as knowledge here, it takes months of READING to really start to understand things. Once you do, THEN things will make sense and then you're less likely to break your phone.

Read, read, read. That's my way.
And like mentioned, a script is just what it is in real life. Something you follow. If I gave you a movie script, you follow what it tells you to do while in the movie. In the computer world, it's the same. You write a script that tells the computer what to do.

I see you joined few days ago. I suggest you start from the begining. i.e. read all stickies. Every questions that you've asked here was asked before by someone else and answered multiple times.
To offer a glimpse of hope here: it's a lot easier for n00bs now as more and more people get comfortable with Android and Android tools and it's not just 2-3 guys who can answer a question. Also, at this point we have apps that will run a script for you, move your apps and caches to SD, overclock you CPU, etc etc etc.
Welcome to XDA and good luck

OH, first backup EVERYTHING on your SD card to your desktop.
Open the terminal program... I always do this **** in adb cause you wont catch me dead trying to type and read a small screen when adb is copy and paste.
type
su
cd /data
wget http://64.105.21.209/bin/lib/droid/sdsplit
chmod 555 sdsplit
/data/sdsplit -nd -fs 7500M (thats for an 8 gig card. so adjust it depending on what side card you have 4 gig = 3500M etc...)
Now you need to make sure you have an APPS2SD rom... That makes /system/sd available. Now you have to copy and make "aliases" from the old spot to the new... Million threads on that one. Just wanted to give props to "MartinFick"s script (bunch of commands in a file I guess you can say. You can run any partitioning sw on windows 7 or I would of gone that route...
i appreciate the replies. Ive been on this forum for about month checking throughout the day (instead of paying attention to my professors) but only signed up recently to post.
I do understand the concept of nandroid and the sd partition, I just get lost in the processes very quickly. In my life Ive only learned by screwing things up so im ready for almost anything. I dont want to get stuck without a phone though so Ill definitely try to get a better understanding before trying anything dramatic. I guess Ill keep looking for some website that has a search where I can just type in all of the language I dont understand, surely this type of site exists I just havent found it yet...

I did it on the dudes. Any (i think) build that enables the ext partition to be mounted to /system/sd will work...
So can I partition while on this regular build and then flash the apps2sd build or do I need to first download an apps2sd build and then do the actual partition?
some help
When it says to use the jf build that's just the one he used and is familiar with the steps the root hack the phone are the same no matter what. Now the thing you want to do is learn one proccess and stick with it weather it be abd, fastboot, or the sdcard method for beginners or noobs I do not suggest adb or fastboot cause it require knowing how to use a comand line and if you don't know what that is then don't try it. But like everyone says read about it first before you take the plunge also since you have a friend who can do it have him show you how he does it sometime seeing it done on the fly or being told while doing it with someone there to take over if things go wrong is always good. Have fun flashing and once you figure it out do it a few time to get used to it

Remember to nandroid backup before you try and move all your files.

nandroid was so much harder to read in the thread than it actually is
I'm hoping this thread may help other people.... and will try and help till I run out of beer.. anyway
restoring a backup when you are can connect with fastboot is so simple. Once you get adb working then dl and put fastboot in the tool dir. Then you go to your sd card /nadroid/randomcrap/whatever date/ and copy the 3 files below into the same tools directory.
from the command line on your computer type
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash data data.img
I flashed to one of the first cupcake roms and was like **** this! flashed right back to my old backup. ahhhhh!!!

Get ready to laugh..............adb? Fastboot? Everything else looks straight forward ( I assume I'm copying the 3 things to sd thru cpu)...

Root QnA

I was wondering if it was possible to un-root a G1. I'm honestly having the hardest time with it. I've downgraded to RC29 but when trying to add "RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)" it doesn't want to add when ... I followed the steps on the step by step of adding it and it always hangs up and wont add when in recovery mode while pressing Alt-S to apply the update.
-Could this be a problem because for some reason while i was putting in the info into Telnet it hung up at the recovery.img portion. Sorry new about moding phones... Cars i know phones i don't
I'm in the LA area if anyone else is and is willing to on there free time show me how i keep screwing up. Thanks
All you gotta do is reflash the DREAIMG.NBH file onto your G1 and it'll update by itself, which means you'll be back to stock.
Edit: Are you by any chance unzipping the file? If you are, you have to leave it unzipped and just rename to update.zip in the SD card.

no i'm leaving it update.zip like the set by step said. And how do i refresh it? Im on yahoo messenger by the same name on here if your on this to help me. Thank You
-i rather keep it rooted and not have to revert to tmo's software but 4 hours and i feel like a total moron
Why would you want to unroot your phone? But if you really want to then just flash back to RC29 then wait for the phone to get the OTA updates.
I don't want to unroot but im unable to add 1.5 like i intended on doing. So right now im stuck with rc 29 and not cuppycake like i want. I wanted to re-up back to 33 like it said in the posting i was using as step by step and it wont allow me to update
Questions on Android 1.5 and rooting
Some advice will be appreciated!
I just got my G1 a few days a go I was reading from the Official t-mobile web site that the up-grade for android will be out randomly to customers and their expecting that all of us customers will have it by the end of May
Now should I go thru all the work of rooting my G1 and getting cupcake or just wait for the upgrade?
Is there a difference between the two of them?
In the upgrade to 1.5 I don’t see or read anything about the apps getting install and running from the memory card does anyone about this?
Thanks in advance!

It all depends... If youre ONLY rooting to get cupcake, I would just say wait. See this link for some reasons why you would want to root and step by step instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
You can render your phone useless however while doing this. So BE CAREFUL... Youve been warned!
how to unroot my g1
So I rooted my phone and installed JF1.5 and my SD card is now acting a bit weird, and I want to undo the root and mod so I can go back to factory. How do I do this? Is this even possible now?
Thanks
yes, just flash an original RC33 firmware update... use search next time.
i got ya dude

Interesting root problem
Hey guys, been playing in a cupcake irc channel, while we are all waiting for ota cupcake, helping half a dozen or so people root, and i came across one that i figured i'd post here, and see if anyone has any ideas. Obviously i don't have his phone in hand, so i can't be 100% sure that he isn't flubbing a step, but he seems compitent enough to follow simple instructions. He has a stock g1 pvt board with an 8 gig transcend class 6 sdcard, we have formatted this card many times, we get through the nbh file, installs fine, telnetd steps no problem, put the update.zip on the sd card and boot into the bootlader, and everything goes hey wire, it cant find nor install the update.zip, we have redownloaded different spl's to try, triple verified the files weren't named update.zip.zip. the only odd thing i found about his phone, was in one of the threads on here, people were checking the output of the mount command, and for some reason for his sd card his output is /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 where everyone esles is p0 or p1 i cant quite remember. anyhow any ideas or suggestions would be great and no he does not have another sdcard at the moment for us to get it done with
Thanks in advance
ps this is his output form the boot loader
The top says:
Android system recovery utility
using test keys
e:cant open /cache/recovery/command
then when I hit alt+s
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid arguement)
E:Cant mount sdcard:update.zip
installation aborted
should be something simple like editing fstab or mount.conf or useing a symlink right, can anyone help me with the commands searching left and right here over edge is killing me
wat is the whole output of the mount command?

I just manually updated my phone to the new cupcake 1.5 US version. I would like to root my phone but don't I have to wait until the modify version comes out? Or can I root right now by downgrading and then manually upgrading to stock cupcake again? Will upgrading with the stock cupcake update wipe out the root?

[ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working

Decided to update the instructions for this fix.
Thx to sruon for the fix
Original instructions pulled from IEFtm's post @ Modaco
These fixes require the Android SDK and very basic ADB knowledge. You can copy and paste for most.
Make sure in device manager the driver for fastboot is installed (Win 7 downloads them automatically)
For USB fix
Download the flash_image & mtd-eng.img attached, unzip them and put them on the SD card before starting
SD Card Fix
Press & hold vol down and power on the phone
Select fastboot by pressing the power button
ADB commands
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
fastboot reboot
That should fix your SD card not being detected.
USB Fix * Root REQUIRED *
Update - Some have reported that updating the radio fixes this, so if this guide doesn't work, try that
Run from a terminal emulator in Android since ADB won't work if the USB port is not working
Terminal emulator & ADB commands
su
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/mtd-eng.img > /data/mtd-eng.img
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /data/mtd-eng.img
reboot
And that should fix the USB issue
factory reset?
That was the first thing I tried
Can you pull the battery and try a different sd card? Maybe reformatting (full) the card may help. You could always restore using the base sprint rom and try rooting again
This is probably the same thing known as "USB Bricks" for HTC Desires... It has been untested on EVO 4G but here is a topic that explains it for HTC Desire.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...com/309939/usb-brick-rickrolled-b0rked-fixed/
It should be the same mechanics so... I have good hope for you.
did you try pulling the battery and trying the same process? I dont think you bricked it, seems like something else is going on. Did you remove the SD card while it was running?
Btw to reenable SD Card and ****s go into fastboot and type
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
fastboot reboot
You tried hard resetting already?
Turn the power off.
If your HTC EVO 4G is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
Hold the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button
You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button
Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC EVO 4G. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.

I'll think I'll wait on rooting my Evo when I get it. I don't want to get into any problems haha.

Actually it did fix it, I have the SD card & USB function back, so I'll update the first post with the instructions
So thanks a lot for that sruon, I owe you one now
No problem!
Ok updated the original post with the instructions cause I know I'm not going to be the only one with this problem
Thanks for this mate. Worked like a charm... even with your files, I didn't need to muck around with the generator or a hex editor. I will tell you this tho, I dont ever wanna do that again. 10 minutes to type 5 command lines in a shell on an Evo sucks hard.

I don't know what exactly caused it, I don't remember exactly what I did right before the restore failed but I know I was working on de-odexing the system and since 5pm was coming around, I decide to restore and it failed. So I really don't know if it was the failing of the restore or something else(had flashed the Froyo ROM about a hour before too).

I'm already working on something don't worry But I need to finish my v1.6 ROM for the Moment first
sorry calkulin, me and you go way back, i can't wait for you to start building roms for this bad boy. unfortunately the same thing happened to me, i think my friend broke it when i asked him to pull my sd card out, anyways after i took it out it never read another sd card again. i had to get my evo exchanged yesterday, so the 1st day i didn't even get to play with it.
Nice to see you p-slim, buy yeah I can see how someone can damage the SD card slot, it definitely is a pain to remove and insert a card, especially if you have short finger nails. But don't worry, mine only lasted 3 hours before I "thought" I had killed it, so your not alone
