I was wondering if it was possible to un-root a G1. I'm honestly having the hardest time with it. I've downgraded to RC29 but when trying to add "RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)" it doesn't want to add when ... I followed the steps on the step by step of adding it and it always hangs up and wont add when in recovery mode while pressing Alt-S to apply the update.
-Could this be a problem because for some reason while i was putting in the info into Telnet it hung up at the recovery.img portion. Sorry new about moding phones... Cars i know phones i don't
I'm in the LA area if anyone else is and is willing to on there free time show me how i keep screwing up. Thanks
All you gotta do is reflash the DREAIMG.NBH file onto your G1 and it'll update by itself, which means you'll be back to stock.
Edit: Are you by any chance unzipping the file? If you are, you have to leave it unzipped and just rename to update.zip in the SD card.

no i'm leaving it update.zip like the set by step said. And how do i refresh it? Im on yahoo messenger by the same name on here if your on this to help me. Thank You
-i rather keep it rooted and not have to revert to tmo's software but 4 hours and i feel like a total moron
Why would you want to unroot your phone? But if you really want to then just flash back to RC29 then wait for the phone to get the OTA updates.
I don't want to unroot but im unable to add 1.5 like i intended on doing. So right now im stuck with rc 29 and not cuppycake like i want. I wanted to re-up back to 33 like it said in the posting i was using as step by step and it wont allow me to update
Questions on Android 1.5 and rooting
Some advice will be appreciated!
I just got my G1 a few days a go I was reading from the Official t-mobile web site that the up-grade for android will be out randomly to customers and their expecting that all of us customers will have it by the end of May
Now should I go thru all the work of rooting my G1 and getting cupcake or just wait for the upgrade?
Is there a difference between the two of them?
In the upgrade to 1.5 I don’t see or read anything about the apps getting install and running from the memory card does anyone about this?
Thanks in advance!

It all depends... If youre ONLY rooting to get cupcake, I would just say wait. See this link for some reasons why you would want to root and step by step instructions:

You can render your phone useless however while doing this. So BE CAREFUL... Youve been warned!
how to unroot my g1
So I rooted my phone and installed JF1.5 and my SD card is now acting a bit weird, and I want to undo the root and mod so I can go back to factory. How do I do this? Is this even possible now?
Thanks
yes, just flash an original RC33 firmware update... use search next time.

Interesting root problem
Hey guys, been playing in a cupcake irc channel, while we are all waiting for ota cupcake, helping half a dozen or so people root, and i came across one that i figured i'd post here, and see if anyone has any ideas. Obviously i don't have his phone in hand, so i can't be 100% sure that he isn't flubbing a step, but he seems compitent enough to follow simple instructions. He has a stock g1 pvt board with an 8 gig transcend class 6 sdcard, we have formatted this card many times, we get through the nbh file, installs fine, telnetd steps no problem, put the update.zip on the sd card and boot into the bootlader, and everything goes hey wire, it cant find nor install the update.zip, we have redownloaded different spl's to try, triple verified the files weren't named update.zip.zip. the only odd thing i found about his phone, was in one of the threads on here, people were checking the output of the mount command, and for some reason for his sd card his output is /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 where everyone esles is p0 or p1 i cant quite remember. anyhow any ideas or suggestions would be great and no he does not have another sdcard at the moment for us to get it done with
Thanks in advance
ps this is his output form the boot loader
The top says:
Android system recovery utility
using test keys
e:cant open /cache/recovery/command
then when I hit alt+s
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid arguement)
E:Cant mount sdcard:update.zip
installation aborted
should be something simple like editing fstab or mount.conf or useing a symlink right, can anyone help me with the commands searching left and right here over edge is killing me
wat is the whole output of the mount command?

I just manually updated my phone to the new cupcake 1.5 US version. I would like to root my phone but don't I have to wait until the modify version comes out? Or can I root right now by downgrading and then manually upgrading to stock cupcake again? Will upgrading with the stock cupcake update wipe out the root?

This was posted in another thread here, but it needs its own. (if someone beat me to it, please delete).
A .nbh image file has been released that will allow you to downgrade your rc30 phone to rc29 which will re-introduce the root bug. Once there you can follow the steps to get root access, install the modified recovery image and flash JF's rc30 and keep root! The steps can be found in various threads on this forum, and also in my wiki.

OMG it worked!!!!!
I wiped out my SD card with it connected to my comp through USB. Then reformatted it to FAT32 (it was FAT), and copied the dream file to my phone. Rebooted with the camera key held, pressed power when it told me to. Then it took less than 10 mins to do its thing and now I am setting up the phone again after its reset.

After that go to market and download the telnet app and keep going. And using those walkthroughs I did what they said but I used JK v1.3 instead of 1.2 and now I am a very happy panda, just look at my sig!
thanks to all for the NBH file, I downgraded from RC30 to RC29, rooted upgraded to modified JF1.3 changed to Engineering bootloader, the best new year gift for G1 user.. am planning to upgrade to modifed RC8 but not now..

I am a complete newbie. I tried to update to the ADP1.1, but it error'd out on the boot image. The phone now shows a triangle with and exclamation point and a graphic of a phone. I got advice on another community to try and install update.zip from the sd card. I downloaded the original ADP1 update.zip, and I tried to install. Here is what I got:
Installing from sdcard

E:Error writing BOOT

You probably needed to wipe it before flashing it. For the fix, listen to the experts. [here]
I am more than happy to listen to the experts. Any of them have an idea of what to do next?
Any thoughts?

Yeah, I do actually. I noticed a thread with the same topic somewhere else and its active. Check this thread out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475244. Leme know if it does not help. Mail me direct if you wish.

I am not sure this helps. The problem I am having is that once I start the update it stall out when trying to write the boot portion saying the phone is out of space. I have wiped the data/cache, but to no avail. Has anyone seen this before?
Mark. I am not ignoring you, I just don't have net access where I live, so unless I get out and come to my favorite parking lot, I can not email. No I have never heard of it either. Some one here should be able to help. I am NOT an expert, but if you want to hear my only idea here it is. Go way back and start by flashing the old rc29 bios on the phone. Then follow the directions to give yourself root access (i know you do not need to do this with a Developer phone), then flash the Jesus Freke's Android developer bios 1.0 then the 1.1. Try and contact Jesus Freke directly. I wish I could help more, but I am really new at this, and with out having your phone to play with, I doubt I could come up with a fix for you.
Is there anyone that can help with this?
Here is the error message I am getting when I try and install the update.zip from the sd card
E:No space left on device
E:Error writing BOOT
E:Failure at line 8
write_raw_image PACKAGE:boot.img
BOOT
Installation aborted
I have wiped the data, but to no avail. I would really like to get this resolved so I can go back to using my phone. If not, I am more than happy to sell this at a good discount.

Hey youneek great guide But could you put a warning for the flashing of haykuro's SPL? The SPL has a chance of bricking your phone if you don't have the latest radio and a PVT board. Even if you have both of those your phone can still be bricked Mind putting that up there for others? Thanks!

Youneek thanks for your reply,
Always at the step where I have downloaded the dreamimg file to the SDCard > shutdown the phone > then restart it holding the camera and power on buttons.
The grey 'bootloader' screen comes up, does a configuration check then flashes up the "not allow" message and dumps to the multi-coloured screen. At that point I have to pull the battery out to restart.
I'm going to go out today and purchase another SDCard. This one is a Sandisk 1mg card and I've read that certain Sandisk cards will not comply with 'rooting' instructions.

Hi guys.
I know that the various aspects of this post are covered in other posts, but I haven't seen anything that acts like a step by step or repository for this info.
Basically, I have a VodafoneAU HTC Magic with 1.5 on it, and I'd like to flash on it one of the Hero roms. I used to have a Diamond and then Diamond Pro, but I know little about Android at this point.
My biggest fear is bricking the phone, followed by not being able to restore my previous rom (and even apps and settings would be awesome too, though not essential) should something go pear shaped.
I know the steps I need to follow are:
1 - Root the phone
2 - Back up ROM (settings/apps too?)
3 - Flash new ROM
4 - ?????
5 - Profit (in the form of enjoying an awesome Hero ROM)
Jokes aside, if someone can point me in the right direction for the first 3 steps, that'd be great. Even if it's as simple as
1 - Root it using this post (link)
2 - Use this App to back it up
3 - etc..
Like I said, I know this info is probably covered elsewhere, but not in one place (that I've found) and I'd hope this post could serve as a guide for anyone else looking to go the same steps as me.
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
Cheers.
First off, you don't need to root your phone, update the SPL, or any of that scary stuff. Which is great, cus that's the riskiest part of it all. Briefly, the procedure is as follows:
1. Boot your phone in fastboot mode (power the phone off, then hold the back button as you power it back on). You'll see a white screen with some text, the word "FASTBOOT" and some androids at the bottom.
2. Note the version numbers you see at the top of the screen - it'll look something like:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.3300.0009 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.20.17
3. Download the ROM you want to upgrade to for your phone's version, rename the zip to update.zip and put it on the root of your phone's SD card
4. Boot a recovery ROM using fastboot (from the Android SDK)
5. Use Nandroid Backup to back up your current firmware to the SD card
6. Copy that backup (and the rest of the contents of your SD card) to your PC, just in case. This is the last point at which you can back out!
7. Use the recovery ROM to wipe your phone's existing firmware
8. Use the recovery ROM to apply the update.zip from the SD card
9. Wait for the update to complete
10. Reboot your phone and enjoy your new ROM!
I did this on my Vodafone NZ HTC Magic (PVT32B) running 1.5 yesterday and am enjoying Hero on it right now, barring a few quirks. If you like, I'll put together a detailed step-by-step of the procedure.

Awesome, cheers. I'll have a crack at it tonight then.
So Am I correct then in assuming step 5 backs up my phone as it is now? So essentially if I roll back it will be exactly as it was? Installed apps, settings, contacts (although sync sorts that out) and all?

Nope. Nandroid only backs up the existing firmware (and I believe some settings). It doesn't back up texts, contacts (though those should be synced with your Google Account anyway), or apps. For the most part, apps are easy to retrieve from the Market, but if you have any you got from elsewhere you'll need to reacquire them. The app MyBackup Pro seems to be recommended on these forums for more thorough backups, though it isn't free (and I've not used it myself). As my phone was (relatively) new I wasn't too fussed about keeping backups of anything except the firmware.
I've done a couple of Nandroid backups and restores and it restores everything (except SD card), meaning applications, settings, everything is restored.
Also, I highly recommend RAv's recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492). Use it to make your Nandroid backup .

I've heard differing reports on what Nandroid does and doesn't back up, so was erring on the side of caution. But if it backs up everything, awesome.
And yep, that's the recovery ROM I used. I'm writing up the step by step instructions at the moment - will post em when they're done.

depends how you restore it- you can restore system.img only and not get all your data etc (using fastboot) but if you fastboot data.img as well then you get it all..... the new recovery restores it all...

I did this on my Vodafone NZ HTC Magic (PVT32B) running 1.5 yesterday and am enjoying Hero on it right now, barring a few quirks. If you like, I'll put together a detailed step-by-step of the procedure.

You can load the Hero ROM without replacing your SPL (in most cases) or rooting, so why replace it if you don't need to? I've done it myself without doing so and it's working fine.
My guide is now ready - check it out at http://www.karrderized.com/romguide/.

I think some SPL versions prevent ROM updates and so need to be replaced with versions that do, but I'm not sure. I'll let someone more knowledgeable take that question.
And thanks, I tried to make the guide as easy as possible

According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019 you should be fine. If you're unable to boot the recovery ROM (step 8 in my guide) then stop there, as I believe that's about where problematic SPLs first show signs of trouble. Just make sure you get ROMS for 32A.
KarrdeNZ, thanks for your fantastic guide! Are you OK to put it up as a stick thread within this forum?
i believe you can only do this with signed roms but this is only from what i have read on here, but to be fair its not hard to root anyway and aslong as your not a dumbass its pretty straight forward and can benefit from bluetooth file sharing and apps2sd and tethering so deffo worth it, opens up your phone to numerous possibilities

Sure, not a problem I'd prefer the thread link to the guide so that new versions are easy to find, but whatever works.
KarrdeNZ, mate I followed your guide to the letter. I got all the way down to step 11 and then a problem occurred.
When I clicked 'Apply sdcard:update.zip' it just said cannot find or cannot load update.zip, or something like that, then said operation aborted?
I was trying to install the EXACT same ROM as you, I downloaded it to my laptop, renamed it update.zip and moved it to the root of the SD card.
Yet it didn't work, I can't for the life of me think where it's gone wrong as everything else up to that point had gone smoothly.
Any idea's?
Well I tried downloading the same file again. No luck this time either!
This is what it says when I click the install from sdcard button:
--install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
Now I get that it's saying that it can't find the file but I really don't understand why? I mean the file is there, do I have to unzip the file onto my computer 1st and then put it on the sdcard?
I thought i just stuck the zipped file onto the root of the card making sure i renamed it 'update.zip'
Please help me out guys, thanks.
The exact thing happened to me; and I realized I was dumb and had named the file "update.zip", when in fact it should just be "update". The file extension should come naturally since the file is still compressed.

KarredeNZ, THANK YOU for your awesome tutorial!! I looked through so many other pages for instructions and they went totally over my head. Your tutorial was the best and easiest to follow.
I seem to be having tons of problems rooting my device.
It was released 1/20/10, I think it has stuff that makes me not be able to do so.
With this information can someone direct me to an appropriate SPL, I already tried "ROM v2.53.707.2 (Engineerings SPL v1.33.2010) - MD5 : F9674D19BE5F949D0D9DC99714D210E3" It said "invalid device" "update fail"

u need to get Amon Recovery running on the phone before u can update to the 1.33.2010 ENG SPL. Theres afew diff ways of doing this.
(1)I did it by installing the android devvelopment kit (note u need to install java then update the kit), after setting it up then install windows usb drivers for Androidso that your computer detects the phone as an adb device (not a storage device) then using Dos CMD prompt type "fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img" while in fastboot mode (which u need to download). your phone will not have the amon recovery installed on the phone at this time but it will boot from your PC through to your phone. Kinda neat. use that recovery to flash the 2010 SPL. Once 2010 spl is flashed u r good as gold to flash any new custom recovery and or rom.
(2) If u don't understand all of this try relentless rooter which can be downloaded from XDA here
(3) youtube guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8BZYEBsSws
Try #3 to some point although u have to change few files because he has a 32B board and u have a 32A.
First decide on a method then ask afew more questions. Help will be just around the corner here
relentless rooter
When i first started using this program it gave me a lot of DOS file not found errors clicking on the buttons so then I took the entire tools folder and lumped it into the relentless rooter program which was calling for like c:/rooter and c:/rooter/root respectively.
I have usb drivers button fine, usb device shows device attached, root files pushes files over to my SDCARD, fastboot seems to be my problem i click it and it says "waiting for device" and just sits.. ugh.. help?
COuld you try and get a dump off the phone?
I was just on my way to the tmobile shop to get one of these and came here to see if people had problems. They are updating it to 2.1 in about may.... but Id like to know if its rootable before I go spend $200 for a pretty phone
Having the same problem here. Seems as though it says Invaild ID when trying to downgrade. ANy help witht his would b great. SO much new reading from the g1 to this.. I dont understand half of it.

We should stick together on this one since we are both having the same issue man! I also have the same problem! When I tried other SPL's to downgrade after no luck with one with a higher number than the one installed I get errors like "invalid id" etc...
I really feel as though all of these SPL's won't apply to us since we have 32A boards on "old radios" as I have read so far.
I am not even able to do the "one-click" root because I follow videos/tutorials to a T and mine always says "backup failed" and the top is always greyed out without me able to click it. Even if i touch to the right of the bottom button and get the top button to light up it still says backup failed or flash failed. It's not happening. I wish we had some attention on this.
I rooted the G1 EASILY i'm quite capable of doing this but im getting errors everywhere like a shot up R2D2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579328
Followed those instructions to a T and got "invalid model ID!" after trying to apply sappimg.nbh..
I had issues using the one touch root on my Rogers htc magic that i got about a month ago. It kept saying backup failed so i tried the older version of the one touch root software. It again said backup failed so i kinda poked around at my phone and and rebooted it then tried it again and it managed to backup everything. So i would keep poking with the one touch root and try one of the older versions.
You guys need to understand that this device is a 32A Magic.
The radio version can be 3.22 or 2.22, but it's still 32A.
You will need to goldcard this phone if you expect any results. If you are 100% sure that the goldcard method has failed, then you have to wait until the phone is rooted by other means.
(I have a 32A Magic that I have installed the Fender Edition 2.22 radio onto. I was able to flash the Fender Edition ROM with no issues. That leads me to believe that the Fender Edition MyTouch is the very first 32A Magic shipped with a 1.6 Donut OS)
I do not own a Fender MyTouch, so I am by no means an expert, but I want to help steer your discussions towards a proper solution for rooting the phone. (If anyone wants to send me a Fender MyTouch, go ahead )

I tried creating a goldcard, I have the 16gb sandisk, 4gb sandisk, and a 2gb kingston.
I tried all of the cards following these methods, but when I insert it into the phone it says "damaged sd card" I have to format and try again or what?
I used the kingston solely because a person had luck with it. I got my goldcard.img made 2 zeros in the CID, did offsets correctly pasted and saved. what am I doing wrong?
What I have been doing is using the mytouch, mounting the sd card, and doing it like that since I do not have an SDcard reader on my desktop computer, but i dont think that would mess anything up. get back to me, I want to try goldcard since you had luck with it and the fedner, please!

experience from the forum shows that most people go wrong on this step:
16) Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program
17) Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.
people seems to be selecting "Logical Disk" (i think thats the other option, please corect me if im wrong) instead of "Physical Disk", there for getting the "damaged sd card" error

Nope.. There is open.. Open Disk and open disk image. I was up till 3am trying each sd card over and over with same results. But now knowing that the SPL is hiher then the downgragables I belive we are just going to have to wait till these are out more. Unfourtunatly, it being a limited edition... we may be screwed lol. Ive got another pc and 2 last sd cards to try today. lol Ive even got a 32mb one... and if that one is the only one that takes the hex edit ill be so mad lol cause it wont fit the nbh file.
EDIT- IM SUCH A DUMBASS lol.. I see what you meant by logical and physical now. I had been clicking logical disk allllll night and always having to reformat the card. Then.. since it was so late when I was doing this, Ikept using the same goldcard.img for all the sd cards lol. So I tried again today, made the gol card correctly and it still was found by the PC... But it stlll gives device error as before. Ill go through getting the cid # from the other cards later when im bored.
My main problems with now not wanting to root this phone...
1. The music player will be gone.. it is nice.
2. 2.0/2.1 is supposed to be offcialy released for it within the next few weeks according to 2 of the Tmobile guys I alked to, one being the regional manager.
If anyone figures it out im all for trying to again.... But for now Ill learn to live with my vanilla dounut. Mmmmm Vanilla Doughnuts
lol
But I cant ever give up on anythign like this so I give it about 5min before im bored enough to start again.

Dude im dying every day staying up until 3am as well trying to pwn this phone. I go to bed sleep, wake up, and sign onto xda to see wtf is what. It's like another dude somewhere out there is having the SAME issues.
I work for t-mo as I said, I have not heard about any new OS plans for fender edition mytouch / mytouch 3g.
Im 100% positive that im creating goldcard correctly, I have 3 unique CID's that I reverse, replace with two zeros, use the correct image, open and uncheck read only on the removable disk, open goldcard, copy offset 00-0017 (however many zeros it said, copy paste save, close) plug back in, "you need to format this card" -windows "damaged sd card" -mytouch.

The press release from tmobile states that 2.1 will be coming to all devices that will support it. Meaning without root size wise, which Im thinking may toss the g1 out for 2.1, but maybe not 2.0. But I was specifly told also that 2.1 will be released for this mytouch, and it is also, obviously, the first to be released with 1.6 donut on it.
Also.. When you get the format disk error.. are you looking down the list on the **** drive to the bottom where it says Physical/removable? I found that the only time it gives me the format error is when I open it in hex where it says Logical rather then physical. If you go to the bottom and hit the physical one, and paste and save I can still open the sd card on the pc and phone.... BUT, it still will not downgrade.
EDIT- Since im still new to this.... Ive noticed that most rooting takes downgrading first. Now, does this mean that the ohones NAND's are set up like say the PSP where the IPL files can be changed to only allow certain firmware? Can it be that having the first phone with a base rom of 1.6 make it to where we cant go down past 1.6? Im still teetering on weather I should put it back in the box and use my G1 till the offcial 2.0/2.1 comes out or keep trying. But I woul dhate damaging it trying to get it to do something it cant.
Thanks to anyone else who gets one to test, I I had the money I would buy a dev one just for this purpose.

If you are referring to the Fender edition as "the first to be released with 1.6 donut on it" then you are incorrect.
I have a non fender edition that I purchased 2 weeks ago with donut 1.6, DCR92 build.
Apparently there are some rooting issues with DCR92/1.6donut/1.33.0007spl....from what I understand.

my SPL ends with 0013, not sure how much of a diffrence that makes. But I honestly thought i read in these forums that this was the first made with 1.6 and not updated to. but maybe I read wrong. All I know is that no trick works as of yet. Ill start again tonight when the kids go to sleep, but for it being a 32a board, I dont really see to many roms I wana try lol
So when you make the gold card does your phone read it or it stops before it loads the file from it? it sounds like the gold card is not created corectly...
The android version is irelevant so is the radio. to load anything, you need engeneering SPL. That will allow you to load any image,(radio,boot,recovery,system...) fastboot with full functionality.

it goes through most of the process of reading the sappimg file and once the prgress bar reaches the end and it goes through checking and all that it stops with the error. Also trying to get into fastboot it give the error that a perfected spl gives so done on both accounts. Ive now made what I think is a working goldcard but dont know if I want to proceed if im going to destroy it if I can get anything back on it.
also... I think im done with it for now till a smarted person gets this done. I really believe that this 1.6 version is a bit different then others, and also the spl seems to be a pain in the arse. I really cant afford a bricked phone, much less one I waited a very long time to get. I tried lol, but in the end my ADD defeated me.
