Hello Liang.
I can tell you how to make Nandroid backup of your Magic/Sapphire. I am not sure what NBH backup means so maybe it's not what you want, but it is definitely what we want. Please could you do the Nandroid backup for us? We have a cut-down HTC Magic here in England, with no Exchange ActiveSync and we really want the full HTC Asia version of the software.
This will not modify your phone or software in any way. It will just do a one-time boot with the special nandroid recovery menu where a backup can be done. Afterwards everything is back to normal.
Here's how to do a Nandroid backup:
Firstly, download fastboot.exe, or if you are on Linux, just fastboot. You can get fastboot from HTC's website, here's the link:
http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html#s2
Save fastboot.exe in just c:\ (the root/beginning of your C: disk).
You need to make sure the USB drivers for the HTC Magic are installed on your computer.
Then you need to download this file, unzip it, and save it to your phone's sdcard:
http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/recovery-new.img.zip
You must unzip the file, so that you have "recovery-new.img" on the SDCard.
Then, please turn off your HTC Magic, and hold down the Back button (arrow button next to the Search button), whilst turning the phone on.
This will enter Fastboot mode, and the phone should show "SAPPHIRE xxxxx FASTBOOT USB" and some other information.
From your computer, go to a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd [enter]), or just Start -> cmd [enter] if on vista.
Type: cd \ (that's CD, space, backslash) then [enter]. This changes your working directory to the root of the c: drive, where we have saved fastboot.exe.
Then type "fastboot devices" and make sure that fastboot on the computer can see your phone. Hopefully it will return a model or serial number of the HTC handset.
If so, please type "fastboot boot recovery-new.img".
This will start your phone up with the modified recovery image, which has Nandroid backup built into it. You should now see the recovery screen on the phone, with some menu options, including "Nandroid Backup".
Please choose to do a Nandroid backup from the menu on the phone. This will create a folder on the phone's sd-card called Nandroid, with some other folders inside, with backups of the system.
You can then choose restart from the Recovery screen and everything will be back to normal.
Please can you do this and send us the files? From your perspective it would be better if you wiped the phone (Factory reset on the phone, Under Settings -> SD card & phone storage -> Factory data reset) before doing this because we don't want your data. Or you could just do it, zip up the files and contact me and I will take your files, restore here, wipe data, then re-zip the files, so nobody will have your information. If you are not happy with that, you could just send us all the files except data.img. I'm sure that would be OK.
I can create a private FTP server for you to upload to if you want, or you can use rapidshare or similar.
My email is : carl @ css-networks.com , or you can send me a message on this forum.

please do it

Yes please Liang - you are the last option to get the real deal

yea, would be nice to have a dump of asian magic

Liang, anything ?
you're the unique person in the world who has this opportunity.
all people's waiting for you, you will become a big star !!!
YES YOU CAN

if he doesn't do it be patient.... if possible.... it is being release in most places in a couple of weeks at worst (Australia getting it on June 15- we are getting HTC version thru 3 and Voda version thru voda...).....I will have a crack at it as soon as i have it- i want it rooted straight away but would prefer to still have aussie/Asian version....

Any news Liang

Try the Rogers from this forum. Exchange ActiveSync works extremely well, mail, calendar, contacts and folders.

Hi, I'm new to this forum and also a new owner of HTC Magic in HK.
I've tried cmf's instruction to fastboot with recovery-new.img. However, the screen seems just stay on the "HTC MAGIC" logo and looks like it's hanged... And I've no way to power it off except pulling the battery...
So is there any more thing I can do to help? As long as I don't need to flash until I can get a safe flash backup, I can still try them out (Well, I'm still afraid of bricking my first smartphone...)

yes, same here in HK HTC Magic, after sending the recovery-new.img, the phone is re-booting with hanged in HTC magic logo

I found that it is possible to execute files inside the /sqlite_stmt_journals directory. So I'm thinking... If we can copy the su command to /sqlite_stmt_journals and execute it there, then we can gain root access?
But I don't know where to get su from... I can't find the file inside the phone...
Anybody can share some insight on this?

You could try copying /bin/sh to su, if the phone is using something like busybox (a multi-call binary), then the one program acts differently if it's called a different name, if you see what I mean.
Really it would be good if somebody who understood the Android stuff, like Haykuro, could explain maybe why the recovery-new.img hangs, and how a working recovery-new.img should be made that can be started via fastboot.

Daldroid knows how....

Can anyone post a HTC ASIA(taiwan) ROM image ?

Does anyone here have an HTC Asia version of Magic ? If so can you post a dump of the ROM ? Or backup using nanroid and post the files. Would like to see the Differences between this rom and the existing roms floating around.
Thanks in advance ...
I am using hk CHT version but unable to boot recovery image
Therefore cannot run the backup to dump my Rom ....
Yes, I am also holding a HK version of HTC. Cannot boot into recovery mode too. Hope anyone can help.
You can try to fastboot daldroid-recovery.img
(more info on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523680).
nandroid is included, so I hope you'll be able to dump your rom.
If the recovery does not fastboot, or if you don't need to, do not flash the recovery image.
Hope this helps,
daldroid
--- edit --
If you decide to try the image and are successful, please take the time to post in that thread that it worked for you and info about your device (basically the info that appears on fastboot screen)
Thank you
daldroid, thanks a lot
your method and files worked on my Taiwan version of HTC magic...
a tip and reminder for Taiwanese users:
use daldroid's recovery + rooted images
if you simply use the recovery image, and flash the rom from haykuro, your magic will be just stuck at the logo
however, daldroid's rom file is english version and no Chinese input method is included
you can still see chinese characters on it, though

Hi, thx for the reply.
Do I apply daldroid's recovery + rooted images = flashing a complete new rom?
And only English?
Since in my mind, root the rom is not equal to flash a new rom. Am i right? Correct me please if I am wrong.

Yes - if you just boot recovery.img instead - then you get the recoverymenu with the option to do aNandroidbackup - pres backup and the backup begins and put it on the SD-card.
Don´t flash the recovery.img - only update the rom afterwards with the update.zip file.
Command from adb/PC:
adb reboot boot daldroid-recovery-new.img (or whatever name your recovery image has)

I want to root my HTC Magic but why doesn't it work? PLEASE HELP!

Guys i got a problem,
I want to root my Htc magic with motherboard 32B.
I downloaded the files: flashrec 1.1.2.20090909 and recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3.img. Both of those files are on my sdcard and not in any files. When i open the flashrec and launch it i see my phone type: EBIO/32B and in the box underneath it i see: http://zenthrought.org/flashrec.cm-recovery-1.4.img underneath that i can see the Download Recovery Image that i can klick on and the Backup Recovery Image where i can klick on as well. When i klick on the Backup Recovery Image it says: Backup FAILED: Could not run command. When i delete everything in that box and klick on the Recovery Image again it says the same thing.
Like you can see i need some serious help, thank you guys for already opening my new Thread. Hope you can help me...

Only if it's a PG58IMG.ZIP. Make sure it's on the root of the SDCard, copy it there by any mechanism you like, e.g. mount phone as USB storage and use Windows Explorer.
If it's a .img file it needs to be flashed by ADB.
fastboot flash radio xxxx.img
Put the .IMG file in the same directory as fastboot.. In my case this is: "C:\android-sdk\tools".

Can you still boot into bootloader? If so, you can try this:
Download an RUU
1. You now need to pick the RUU you wish to flash, a good source is this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074559
2. Once you have downloaded the RUU you would like to flash, run it (it can take a while to load), and stop when you get the welcome screen, which has a picture of a Sensation on the left and a red caution notice on the right.
3. Move this window out of the way (it forces itself into foreground), then open up windows explorer and go to:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp
4. Then sort by Date Modified. Find the newest folder with a long random sequence of numbers as its name, go in here and you should see, three files and a folder: corecomp, dotnetinstaller, IBSEW64. (the files may be different on 32-bit OS), now go into the folder which has another long random name.
In there amongst a lot of files (use search if you need to), you will find rom.zip. This is the rom we want to flash!
5. Copy the rom.zip file to the root of your SD Card
(i.e. if your on Windows, X:/ [where X is the letter of your Sensation's SD Card])
6. Rename the rom.zip you just put on your SD Card, to PG58IMG.zip (ensure you do not rename it to PG58IMG.zip.zip or it wont work!)
7. Find the "HTC Android ROM Update Utility" Window, and hit Cancel.

[Q] Please help me step by step for a custom ROM?

Hi guys,
I really need help on this, and i am hoping very much someone can be patient with me as i try to install a custom ROM on my HTC Desire S.
The BIGGEST problem i am facing is getting command text correct in the command window, i am using Windows 7 home premium on a laptop, the previous posts i read and followed were all saying put this in the command and put that in the command but none of them were correct and my computer kept saying wrong!
I am currently at the stage where i have visited HTC Dev and i have sucessfully gone through the procedure for unlocking the bootloader, i found this difficult to do, command prompts they gave were wrong i had to change paths, and i was missing certain .dll files on my computer too, which HTC did not mention i would need, but here i am after days of messing about and trying all sorts of commands, with a unlocked bootloader, with S-ON and running a Vodafone stock rom of Gingerbread Android version 2.5.3.
My phone is Vodafone branded i wish to remove all of their branding and apps, and install a plain unbranded ROM.
However, i need step by step instruction, i can not do this from threads that say "follow this here (link to another thread) which then links to another and another, i ended up with i think 15 tabs in the browser open, with conflicting advice, conflicting information, mistakes, and a whole lot of jargon that i did not understand, so what i really am hoping for is firstly links to all the software or downloads that i will need first, direct link to the rom, the backup, and anything else, if anyone needs info from my phone to pinpoint a specific rom i am happy to give it, i do not mind another HTC rom as long as its plain with no carrier apps or branding on it, then once i have got all the downloads sorted out i can start from there.
Please help me out i have been at this for days and getting nothing except confused.
Many thanks! :good:

I have hboot 200. 0002 as well as S-ON so i believe its the same, i can follow this one quite easy is it ok to do??
Also, while flashing this rom and recovery image, should i have SDK tools open on my computer??
And another thing, i noticed while extracting the recovery image that it just says recovery, should i rename it to recovery.img or leave it as it is? Because the command prompts are saying "recovery.img" and not just "recovery"?????
Thanks.

First you need to get in Folder Options in your WIN 7 Control Panel. There's option in View tab called " Hide extension for known file types". Uncheck that option and click ok.Then you will see extensions for all files on you win 7.This will show you extension of recovery.Should be .img.
Then you can follow that guide.I used the same one.
You need to get newest recovery. There are TWRP and 4ext for HTC Desire S.They are up to date.Do a little search and read posts and info.
Check post about panels (Hitachi or Sony)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943524.Again search for that in HTC Desire S forum here. When you check all of that you can try any custom ROM but always backup nandroid.
Little hint : If you want to start CMD window in any folder first open that folder hold SHIFT and right click on empty space. You will get command there named Open command window here.Click on that and you can work.

I will ask if i get any questions then cheers
OK i have a question straight away, it says in the tutorial:
Copy the rom onto the SD card, then it says copy the boot.img onto the android C folder - SO -
Do i first extract the boot.img and copy it to the C android folder AND copy the same boot.img onto my SD card, as well as the meta info and other stuff?
OR do i copy the boot.img onto the C drive only, and copy everything else onto the SD card?
A little confused here on what to do.
Thanks for any help.

You do exactly that. You place the rom into the sd card, and you copy the boot.img into the said folder.
This is because you are "unlock s-on", the recovery isn't able to flash the boot.img, so you have to do it manually.
Remember, even after you flash the rom, if you did not flash the boot.img the phone will NOT fully boot.
*also, the guide says to turn the phone off after flashing the rom and boot into the bootloader. I dont think this is necessary, you can just reboot the phone into bootloader from the recovery itself.

So, just to clarify, i copy the whole .zip onto the SD card (including boot.img) and then re copy the boot.img into my Android folder on the computer (i will then have boot.img on BOTH the SD card and the C Android folder, this is where i am getting confused, i intend to start flashing today sometime.
OK i am going to flash Reaper V.4 rom and 4EXT as recovery, if anyone has better suggestions on a safe rom please let me know i will flash that instead.
Thanks.

You can try other roms when you try that. There's a lot of nice and smooth editions. First try reaper you have it now.
With S-ON you have to flash boot.img in fastboot after you install rom from recovery. That's why you need to copy it in android-tools folder.Whole zip goes on sd and you backup old rom from recovery, wipe everything except sd (wipe is recommended) and then install from zip in recovery. After that reboot in bootloader then flash boot.img from fastboot.Reboot and wait.Should be in in few min.No more then 10.Follow the guide.

error: cannot load 'recovery.img'

jmcclue means you need to download gapps for your android. That will be in zip and you install it through recovery just like rom. Most of custom rom require that step.Copy zip on SD,boot in recovery and flash from zip.Reboot and you will get google apps.
This guide is for HTC Desire S and you can find most of things you need but for roms follow Android Development in HTC Desire S on XDA.

fastboot is controlled by the bootloader, the rom can't affect it in any way. The option "fast boot" in HTC Sense roms is something else, that sort of hibernates the phone instead of powering off, so the phone "boots fast".
Thanks guys i will go aheah and do these
