Probably because of being jealous of my new iPhone my old HTC VOX committed suicide 3 days ago:
It ran out of juice from the battery did his *Pling* cry for help and died.
Normally recharging the battery had done the job but this time turing it on only the tricolor bootloader menu appeared, displaying:
Vox
ONBL 1.34.0000
Vox
SPL 1.34.0000
Vox
CPLD -04

(Model is VOX0101)
So first i tried several times on/off-switching, complete recharge, having the SIM/SD Card removed, continuing with trying to perform an Hard-Reset, which i gave up after the 200th time in which no screen turned up, asking me to confirm anything, - just the bootloader in his red, green, blue glowiness.
Of course my warrenty is over (unless the registration of my S/N at HTC membership counts as an warrenty date?)...
Well - so i continued my journey, which ended up in this beautiful forum of help and ideas about what i could do next.
The obvious choice was to perform a flash-update. So i downloaded the ROM-Update from HTC-support (entering my Serial-No) - which i think of being the "original shipped" version.
=> it ran through all the way very smoothly but in the end, when there is the "Congratulation"-message and it says that the update is complete - my VOX rebooted and *surprise*: just the bootloader screen - AGAIN!
dammit...
ok - hooked it up to the USB Port - started mtty - *great* - i got a connection .. *happily dancing* ... i typed the Password, "ruurun 0", Device Restart - and had great expectations ...
but you guess it ...
again the boot loader ! *arg*
ok ... i tried to flash another ROM ... (by the way: i fell in love with frauhottelman's Custom ROMs on this journey!) - BUT:
Frensh ROMs, Russian ROMs, Custom ROMs ... -> nothing works because of:
g_cKeyCardSecurityLevel = FF !
... unfortunately i cannot unlock my Phone because the "unlock application" does not get a connection to my VOX - cause active sync won't recognize it!
... -> i also found other commands - which seem only to work on an Apache - not on my VOX
set 14 0
task 8

...
i noticed that when i had my microSD-Card inserted, that it displayed the message:
"searching for SD card"
so i researched a bit more - and placed the ROM from the SPL thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330909) onto a the freshly FAT32 formatted card - named "vox0img.nbh"
=> again Reboot - but NO result !!!!! *grrrr**
>>
So please Wizards and wise men of this Land of Knowledge:
Help me to raise my VOX from the dead, crack it and run the smooth blessing of custom firmware !
any suggestions?
hmm.. no help ? no ideas ?
Bad luck - seems like a HW problem. Flashing the original SW succesfully should have done the job. You may wish to search for the disassembly instructions (some service manuals floating around the web) and play around with that - just to make SURE all cables are still properly attached. There are only 3 of them, so not much to check:
1.) Main cable connecting the upper and lower part of the device
2.) Display cable from the LCD to the upper board
3.) Numeric Keyboard cable from the keyboard PBA to the upper board
I really doubt the cables are to blame here, but by disassembling you could add a cleaning session as well - maybe your Vox will be feeling better then. Good luck!
hi tobbbie,
thanks for the help.
i completly disassembled and reassembled my VOX (S710)
-> Tip: You should start to open the body at the top near the on/off switch, not like the manual says to on the left...
well,
all cables were / and still are properly attached now - the device is nice and clean - but still just the bootloader ... this suxXX
Well, depending on the tools used (I used an old plastic card) the left side is the best option to open the housing. At top/bottom the clips have the nearest distance to each other and thus these two are the hardest places to get it open - regarding my experience.
Try to find a broken device in ebay (cracked screen or so) and replace the parts - this should revive it definitely. Or sell it for screen replacement there. I had a device where the screen was replaced by a cheap ebay-seller replacement LCD and the max. brightness was only as much as the low-level of the normal LCD.
The phenomenon continues !!!
After being frustrated for a day - and betting on broken devices on ebay as tobbbie suggested - i thought: just give it a shot - turned it on - and TADA ! HTC-Logo / Provider-Logo ... it booted up !
wh000000t ! i was shocked...
So the thing is: everytime i wait about 5 hours - the device is booting up -
BUT - as soon as i restarts / press power off => soft-reset it ... BAM ! ... just the boot loader again.
...
so the question is:
what changes within the device after it has been "off" (battery inside) for about 5 hours ???
I think the backup battery maybe the problem. This is tiny rechargeable Lithium battery to backup the clock when the battery is off the device. In the VOX it is located on the small PBA where the earpiece is mounted on the upper part of the device. These things get rotten after some time (usually harmless - just a delayed or reset clock) but it may be worse, i.e. preventing a boot when it short-cut internally or at 0 V.
I did some investigations on these rechargeables for my other devices (Amadeus, Hurrican and Tornado) - and you can hardly get them anywhere. Finally I succeeded and all my old devices have a new backup battery now. The one I could put in them is however a little too big for the VOX imho (did not try), see my post on that here.
As a start, measure the voltage of this battery and unsolder it. It should work afterwards, I hope.
hmm... this could be the problem ... i'll give it a try ...

OK, heres the deal..
Yesterday I managed to crack the bottom-left corner of my BA screen (damn medkit shifted onto it in my car glovebox ).
As i was checking to see how much of the screen was still responsive (seemed OK, still usable, only the 'New' button and the bottom item of the menu didnt work) the battery died (as in completely, hard reset died)..
So i plug in the power, and start the familiar initial setup. I get to the callibrate screen screen and am unable to continue..
So my question is: Is there any way to bypass the calibrate screen section of the initial setup? Im pretty sure enough of the screen still works for the device to function, if only i could get past this damned calibration screen..
Clearly i cannot bypass it completely, as the screen does need to be calibrated - but is there any way I can recover my BA?
Cheers All

Also, if you can still see the image it means that only the digitizer (touch sensitive part) is broken, and not the screen so it shouldn't cost to much to replace.
And remember - search is your friend!
This might be a bit toooo late, but just in case some one is stuck with a broken screen as dabs and I were.
I received a k-jam (lucky me, it was for free) with a broken touch screen, it was left uncharged for a long time so after charging it, it entered the unwelcomed welcome mode (you know, align, copy, time zone ...) and there were no way of passing this part of initialization.
I had to do some search over the net, and I found a good article here ((Can I use a PDA that has a broken touch screen)) http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?m=200510 which advised the use of "RemoteCalibration.exe" directly from the pc. This killed the welcome.exe program and I managed to re-use the K-jam again. The only draw back about this way is that I will have to connect the K-jam to a pc every time I hard reset, I hope there is a way to do the same action via mini sd cards.
After that, I installed fakecursor (but I'm looking for a better sw to emulate the touch screen function as this one cancels most hardware buttons on the devise) but at the moment, I'm using all the k-jam's functions.
Hope this would be of help to some one out there
Bonjour
I upgraded to WM6 (pdaviet) 2 months ago (I guess..), and problems started to appear a few weeks ago. First it just was hard to boot sometimes, had to reboot several times to get it up and running, but when it could start everything was fine. Then since yesterday, it became harder. And today, couldn't start it at all. Tried several times, and everytime the screen went melted, corrupted, like if it couldn't stand an o/c, but it always runs at normal speeds. I guess it has something to do with the battery and the way WM6 handles it (or at least the implementation we have on our prophet).
I tried to hard-reset, I left it a long time on the format screen (before the actual HR) and it handled it for long enough, but the same thing started while setting up WM.... too bad !
While writing this message I tought I could try to downgrade, and I did using AKU3.3-Jester-b1.
I had no problem while the phone was in guest mode after the HR.
Everything went nice during first step upgrade, but on final reset it did the same thing, and now..... it cannot start at all !!!!
Someone has an idea ? I own a G4 and it has the following roms :
IPL 2.10, SPL 2.20, GSM 2.47 (or something like that)
It won't charge (but my batteries are full, I've got an external charger), it won't start from battery nor from power, even if the battery is removed.
Damn, at least I guess I can return it like that to orange, since it cannot start one can't see the modified rom...
If anyone has a suggestion, it is more than welcome ^^
Thanks !
Niko
huh !
back to semi-life ^^
After a few hours left alone without battery or sim card, it started again...
but it still resets every few minutes, or the screen goes melted (actually its like white scanlines that fulfill the screen).
I'll try to leave it shutdown for the night, see if I can at least put the orange splash screens and rom back for warranty purpose.
But it now has serious HW problems, for sure. And my opinion is WM6 has something to do with that. BEWARE !
Another strange thing is that I now have to keep the reset button pressed for half a second to reset, where it reseted instantly before. Those devices really have unstable hardware.
FYI, it was almost brand new, as it was warranty-replaced about one week before I installed WM6.

Hey LastNikita,
I had the same problem ! The white scanlines thing just after re-updating a WM6 version (pdaviet), because I was tired of the constant reset issue.. suddenly, the update went wrong, and I stupidly followed the "recovery" process, which tells u to remove the battery... bang ! screen went corrupted !
Like you, I tought it was over... but I noticed that if you connect your phone and PC with USB, and keep pressed power (ON/OFF button on side) + camera after reseting (little hole on bottom - press during 5 sec!), the PC recognizes a USB device (not the usual phone drivers...) at this moment, I launched the Jester 3.3 (step1) update, in order to downgrade from the ugly WM6 pdaviet... My phone was not yet fixed (still with white scanlines), but at least, I could hear again the WM "start" sound, the scanlines would also "move" across the screen borders when I touched the screen, which made me imagine I was on the calibrating process... also, while connected to PC, after a while, ActiveSync would launch, asking for 1st time synch... this kept me confident as the phone (software) seemed to be reacting fine although HW prob...
I completely charged the phone again (till green light) then kept on reseting the phone (until I hear the WM sound) hoping the lines would finish scanning and come back with the normal .. and guess what, it did !!! Of course, PIGHEAD as I am, I wasn't totally happy it recovered with WM5, so i digged for a better rom, and I can tell you I'm very happy with the smart1 (wizard version) which works fine, but still has some minor bugs as Live Messenger not working... but runs fine (specialy when pressing the ON/OFF button !
PS: Make sure the ALWAYS completely switch off your phone (ON/OFF for 3 secs) before removing the battery... it did happen again... when I stupidly trusted the "recovery" process, again !
DUHHHH !!!!
PS: at least, now you ALL know !
Kokiri
Finally ok for warranty )))
Thanks for sharing mate
I finally managed to downgrade to my original Orange rom, and I'm in the process of putting the original Orange splash screens back (I made the nk.nbf but I can't find the right utility to upgrade... "Update utility cannot open the requested file").
BUT I still have that HW problem afterall.... so I guess it still has to go back to warranty right ? This isn't a big deal since Orange is VERY prompt (I guess I'll get it tomorrow or monday morning, the delivery guy brings a new one and goes back wiv my phone, quite nice !), and I have a button which is stucked (from the begining) anyway ^^
While I'm writing this my phone is docked and synced, and it seems fine.... but, I guess, as soon as I will reset it will start over again.... I'll keep you posted.
Anyway, I'm no longer desesperate and that's good news (for me ^^)

yip
ok, everything's back to original.
Actually, it works well when docked, but it freezes/melted screen as soon as I tried to use it on battery, so that I'm quite sure it has something to do wiv WM6.... I'll post that on some crossbow threads this weekend if I have time enough (there are so many of them now !)....
But once more, if YOU read this, keep that in mind.
Hope you guys won't have that kind of failure while trying it.

I am having the same problem except the screen showing white scanlines everything else is working on the handset. Could it be a LCD Problem?
Me too...
I have the same issue (black/colored vertical lines and a white screen). I think it has to do with upgrading to WM6 or with overclocking with batteryStatus, not sure. This are the suspects in my opinion....
Now I downgraded to WM5 but the problem seems to persist, I disabled batteryStatus and will see if the situation improves... crossing fingers
Uhm ... possible Overclocked!
I have read 3 threads with same errors!
how much was your highes clock? do you use it for navigation? long time on highest clock or only for speed up?
i dont have a problem with scan lines but with my prophet i use the scaling option and go max to 234 i also set to 234 when using certain apps.
is this damaging to my prophet?
at the moment trying to upgrade to PDAViet 4.0.0.0.3 with a world of pain but thats another topic!
I flashed my XDA Exec with Leo's V7 Videocall ROM which all appeared to go fine until I performed the hard reset to reinstall.
It rebooted to the white screen asking you to press 0 to reinstall or X to exit, so I pressed 0. The screen briefly displayed a 'clearing' message and then went blank. There is no further response from the unit from any input except when I try to hard reset the device and reinstall again.
Just soft resetting the device only continues to give a blank screen and trying to power on the device in a normal manner also only gives a blank screen.
Windows XP fails to recognise the device when it is plugged in via USB either at the hard reset screen or soft reset or complete power off (remove battery, etc) then power on.
I updated to ActiveSync45 prior to the first hard reset.
Does anybody have suggestions or ideas on how to un-brick this Universal?
seems broken DOC chip. how many years you UNIVERSAL
It's about 18 months old now.
What is the DOC chip and why would it only fail at an upgrade?
Try a re-flash
Hi have you tried re-flashing the device?
Enter BootLoader mode, hold Power & BackLight button & press Reset, this will show Serial or USB on the screen. Start the flash off again or try another Rom (maybe the one you have is corrupt)
Cheers,
Beat
Hi Beast,
Yeah, I stumbled across these instructions today (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Instructions for those stuck on Boot Screen) and will give that a go tonight when I get home.
Thanks for the suggestion - I'll report back once I've tried it.
jamver - did you charge before flashing your new BIOS? it can go blank just because the battery could be dying and despite seeing some charge in the indicator, in fact the batt would be exhausted.
Hi jamver, I also encountered the same issue as you a few months back. Symptoms sound similar. I tried the points described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289325
Also, upgraded my bootloader and the device came back to life. One thing I learned also is that not all USB cables are made the same. If you find one USB cable doesn't work, you may want to try another. (my case, using a poor quality cable resulted in the "serial" word on the screen not changing to "USB")
Good luck and all the best!
Fixed
Thanks for the help guys. Manually putting it into bootloader mode and re-flashing it worked.
WM6 is significantly faster than any image of WM5 I've used!
hello,
i've ever meet this problem.. but after reflashing in bootloader mode all restart pefect !
Hopefully I will get attacked for being an idiot, but if anyone can help it would also be nice.
However fun playing with mtty.exe and task 2a was I believe I have bricked by TyTN II. I have read many things and tried everything I can find, so if someone has any ideas to get a bootloader back please let me know!
Hard Reset of course will not work.
Soft Reset of course will not work.
Installing ROM from SD card so far won't work because can not go into bootloader mode.
If someone has any ideas besides melt it down please let me know.
ID10T Comments also welcome
Thanks
shaun
Saying that "it doesn't work" will usually not help finding the exact problem.
What did you do, what does the phone displays now, does it display anything? if yes, what.
When you plug your phone on the PC does the PC seems something connected over USB, or is it just dead ?
Did you install HardSPL originally etc.
provide details !
Press simultaneily power+camera+stylus, if bootloader not appear you have bricked your Kaiser.
See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=344555&highlight=Task+2a
and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1720225&postcount=289
(sorry for my poor english)
More Details
Background:
I purchased an ATT unlocked phone from the US so I could use it in Japan where I live using the softbank AP and service. I already use an unlocked Hermes, so I thought it would be easy to install on the Kaiser with Chaimd's install files. I was able to get my boss's HTC to work, but not the ATT, so in order to provide Chaimd with the original CID I followed the instructions on: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568
Once I did all that it seemed to work fine with the new ROM; however when I ran "info 2" for Chaimd he did not recognize the CID, so I may not have completely uninstalled the SSPL_Kais. I just got curious playing with Mtty.exe and ran "task 2a" (Before I read don't do it on Kaiser) and had the following dump in the terminal window:
Cmd>task 2a
Format ALL start
backup SPL OK
backup MISC configuration OK
SPL start start block=288, total block of CE=1760
ERASE block 1275 FAIL !!!
Write 0xFF start page=0x4800, total page=0x1B800
SPL version and MFG TAG are same, skip it.
restore SPL OK
restore MISC configuratoin OK
restore MFG configuratoin OK
Format ALL end
Cmd>task 2
Observations:
- The Phone will not turn on or off with power button (no lights change)
- When reset only is pushed or held nothing happens (no lights)
- When Power is held then the soft reset is pressed the green light on the left turns on and remains solid green. (phone will not respond to power button and green light only goes off after reset is pushed again)
- Camera + Reset nothing happens (no change no lights)
- Soft Keys for Hard reset are pushed with reset button (nothing happens. No lights).
- Bootloader's three color screen does not ever appear.
- The Hard Erase screen options for factory reset never apear.
- When battery taken out for a period of time then above tried again, nothing changes.
- Once green light is on it will not turn off until the reset button is pressed
- when connected to the PC the PC does see it, but doesn't know what drivers to use.
Tested
- Installing ROM from an SD Card
- Reinstalling ROM from PC, but without Activ Sync I do not know how to install a new ROM as per the instructions in the various installers.
- I have assumed that without the bootloader working that nothing would work, but I have tried
I hope this enough details for someone to help me find the next steps.
Thanks
shaun
Thanks

I think i posted in another thread that your phone is now in "Qualcomm Diagnostics Monitor" mode. Your SPL is no longer available and the phone falls back to this diag mode. There are drivers for this mode (i posted them somewhere) and certain diag actions can be performed with tools such as "PQST". However, to date there is no known way to flash it. It pretty much looks like u have a brick. The only way to recover is via JTAG. I'd say you better send it to HTC service.
Thanks
Thanks for your wonderfully unencouraging words jocky. At least I can stop reading and accept the "things I can not change..." Perhaps when I go to the states I can convince ATT to give me a new one - Who knows.
There are a few guys here who have jtag equipment and the necessary knowhow. I will have my own segger jtag in a couple of weeks. Drop me a PM maybe I can bring it back to life then.
Hello, I have a PDA Eten glofiish M810, and I have a problem now will explain it to what is
success. While performing a ROM upgrade a few days ago, the update
that fails and the PDA connected to your PC, turn off the display (display neroooo).
I try to restart it, removing battery but nothing, the buttons light up
normally but display BLACK. What the hell happened?
So I do try as hard reset, power + soft reset (anything), power + soft
reset + cam (nothing) etc etc. .... but I feel lots of hard reset the PDA is restarted
(I notice the buttons that will go off) but the display is always black. Provo
directly to install a ROM Journal (ps. when I connect the PDA to the PC, the
PC sees me quietly MS Active Sync works normally) but the bar
Progressive does not go forward remains at 0%, nothing!
I followed instructions .... Power + rec (no red button on the camera) and then go with
the pen .... for many seconds? 1 made 5 made 10 made 1 minutes did take off .....
the stylus, Dividend fingers .... NOTHING! but a screen comes out .... kind of testing
normalemte touchabile (1 for CPU, RAM 2 ....) but it is a screen type under
screen "in the sense that it is difficult to see it ... in fact I could normally
viewed over a light projected on the screen .... trying and trying again
(power-rec and stylus) screen testing no longer appears but the logo now appears
Glofish (always under the screen and view it through projected light) ... but after
ten seconds disappears ...
I upgraded directly from SD. but the result is always the same.
I know some of you help?
