Need a decent spreadsheet program - any suggestions? - General Questions and Answers

Hi all.
I have an XDA Mini S that I'm currently running WM6.1 on.
I usually use it for spreadsheets, and need a program that I can use vlookup in Excel on it.
Excel Mobile just won't do it.
Any suggestions for mods or other compatible programmes that can be used instead would be much appreciated. I'd prefer to keep using Excel on my PC but I'm happy to switch apps on the phone.
My desktop currently has Win XP pro and Office XP pro, currently fully up-to-date.
Thanks in advance.
*edit* Thanks to Janis, I've moved this into Q&A. I've googled for Excel Mobile and Mobile Office, but haven't really found anything specific enough

You can get "documents to go" but the best one is Softmaker office.. they both cost money ofcourse. There is also third one which is the worst one "quickoffice". And it also is not free. Only case with softmaker office is that it cannot open new office 2007 stuff (like *.docx etc.)

Not sure what you are trying to do with vlookup but it works for me (see attached) created on my wizard running wm 6.1 and office 6.1.
It looks for "mick" in the range B:E and returns the value in row 0 (which is row 1 really) of the left most column.
You should be able to edit it for your needs.
Hope it helps.

Qtek S100 Internal Memory Upgrade

Does anyone did a internal memory upgrade to 128mb in the Qtek S100? Where? Is it worth the price?
Thanks!!!
It's awesome ... 57Mb internal RAM is simply not enough. After the 128Mb upgrade, I did not have to select what to install in RAM anymore, and everything runs more smoothly than it did in 64Mb (I have an upgraded i-Mate Jam)

where did you upgrade your i-Mate? Just curious.. 8)
What exactly are you using all that RAM for? I've installed all I need, and I have plenty of space left.
Hi,
How can I upgrade my ram? Is it possible to use parts of other pocket pc's? I have a Qtek2020 which I could use for parts... (it's screen is broken)...
Thanks,
JeDa
Mine was upgraded by www.ppctechs.com. I have a requirement for the following programs to reside in RAM, since about 3 hours of my working day are spent connecting to the corporate Lan with a wireless SD card. One look at the list should indicate that I mostly use my PPC professionally.
TimeTTracker
Tekstmaker

Looks really powerful! I might check this out!
Tekstmaker
Planmaker
Looks good, really good. But if you're at your own premises (like you said) you might as well use the real thing on a full size computer with a full size keyboard to save some time.
KSE Truefax
Why? You must have fax machines at your company?
PocketPlan
Useful if you have project plans allocating your time on an hourly basis, if not - why do you need it in your pocket?
Citrix Client
VNC Client
Terminal Services client
All three of them? You should have your company selecting a standard environment. And WTS client is in ROM so that does not really count as something requireing space on your device.
TomTom
For navigating the corridors?
Adobe Acrobat
Reader or writer? At least on the QtekS100 there is an acrobat reader included in the ROM.
PocketLauncher
With SPB PocketPlus, why do you need this?
Peacemaker
Why exactly do you need this if you're connected to the WLAN?
Commontime mNotes
I guess if you're stuck with Notes you're stuck with this.
PIToday
Something like this should really be standard, but I personally prefer tAgenda. And does PIToday work with mNotes?
Hudson Phonedashboard
You have a company phone, right? So why bother?
PocketZenPhone
Nice one. But not really useful until I can use the volume slider to pick between different profiles.
Tube PRO London and Paris
Beutiful!
Pocket Informant
Does this work with mNotes or is it just a "nice to have"?
Sprite Backup
Is this really necessary? If you syncronize with your server using mNotes it seems a bit overdoing it.
SPB PocketPlus
This should be on every PPC!
SPB GPRS Monitor
Again, why? I used it for the trial period to find out roughly how much I was spending, but now I just don't bother. If I don't need to know I don't want to know.

It's mainly for reference purposes during meetings. The sheets I work with sometimes lose formulas in the translation to Pocket Excel
KSE Truefax
Why? You must have fax machines at your company?
Yes, but some faxes I receive are confidential
PocketPlan
Useful if you have project plans allocating your time on an hourly basis, if not - why do you need it in your pocket?
I have project managers in my staff, and need to able to see impact of changes in resource allocation, time frame changes, delivery delays during meetings in which we discuss these

My company has a standard environment. Our customers usually do not.
TomTom
For navigating the corridors?
For getting to my office Actually I travel a lot by car, both for work and private.
Adobe Acrobat
Reader or writer? At least on the QtekS100 there is an acrobat reader included in the ROM.
Reader, and it's better than the westtek one, period.
PocketLauncher
With SPB PocketPlus, why do you need this?
I like tabbed menus better full screen than on the today screen. I do use pocketPlus, but only one single line for the key programs. The rest are organized in Pocket Launcher
Peacemaker
Why exactly do you need this if you're connected to the WLAN?
Peacemaker helps me exchange appoinments with people who have PalmOS (quite a few among my customers do)
Commontime mNotes
I guess if you're stuck with Notes you're stuck with this.
Yep
PIToday
Something like this should really be standard, but I personally prefer tAgenda. And does PIToday work with mNotes?
That's the fun of it. Regardles of what you use, all appointments go into the pocketpc underlying database. All PIMs are nothing but frontends in front of that same database. PIToday provides the list on the today screen, pocket informant gives me a more complete and detailed view when actually planning, and mNotes synchronizes that same underlying database with Lotus Notes.
Hudson Phonedashboard
You have a company phone, right? So why bother?
No, the PDA is private but I use it for work. The phone part contains my private number. I also have a company phone, but that is a phone only.
PocketZenPhone
Nice one. But not really useful until I can use the volume slider to pick between different profiles.
useful enough for me though
Tube PRO London and Paris

Pocket Informant
Does this work with mNotes or is it just a "nice to have"?
As with PIToday above. PIToday is only a today plugin, Pocket Informant is the real PIM, and yes, Pocket Informant Rocks!! (and mNotes synchronizes my data from Lotus Notes to the PPC Database, so yes, for use with Pocket Informant.
Sprite Backup
Is this really necessary? If you syncronize with your server using mNotes it seems a bit overdoing it.
Yes, it is neccessary. A PPC usulaly not only contains data that can be synchronized with the desktop, but also license files, configuration files, favourite settings etc. Besides, PPCs do crash, and having a self extracting backup handy on a memory card gets you up and runnign in 30 seconds, back to the state your machine was in before the crash.
SPB PocketPlus
This should be on every PPC!
Indeed.

I need to know, since it's my private subscription. Aside from this, quite a few companies allow you to use a company phone, but with a quota above which one has to prove the calls are buisiness related, so yes, tracking calls may actually be of importance for more people than you would imagine.

Ok, I wont quote the long text
Although I would have chosen to carry a small laptop for some of the tasks I agree that if you don't you probably need most of the software you listed.
To Wiz:
With all those application running, How is the battery life on 128MB ?
thank you
As far as I can tell, battery life is roughly the same with 128Mb installed, maybe slightly better even since I do not have to start programs from SD anymore.
how much memory now is free after a hard reset?

Looking for PIM for Win CE5 (I'm new ... go slow!)

Chaps,
I'm new 'round here (first post), and I am not that clued-up on PDA and Windows CE terminology and suchlike. However I have a technical background, so will probably get along OK.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens Loox N100 (see link here.) I bought it as a Sat-Nav system, but have since discovered that you can unlock it and reveal the underlying Windows operating system. It claims to be Windows CE v5.00.
Having managed this, I have loaded various bits of software onto it, including TCPMP (MP3 player) and SpreadCE (Pocket Spreadsheet program.) Both of which work very well, and I am very happy with them.
I now want to find both address book and diary software, thus allowing me to use the machine as a PDA. However, I simply can't find anything to fit this bill - it seems that if you buy a PDA with WinCE on it, it also comes with Pocket Outlook, allowing you to do both these things. I don't have this software, and therein lies my request.
Is it possible to get hold of CAB files for Pocket Outlook, to solve this problem? Or, failing that, can anyone recommend a suitable PIM application that will both keep track of contacts for me, and run a personal diary? (If these sync with Outlook on my desktop PC that would be the icing on the cake, but it is not essential.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for suitable software for these tasks?
The other option is to use SpreadCE to write something using Excel functionals. I may be able to cook up a reasonable address book like this, but a diary would be beyond me!
Thanks for any help!
Oli.
Quick update ...
.. searching on here has thrown up "My Calender v1.5", which looks ideal for the diary part of the problem, but when I load it and run it I get the message (on the pocket device) "Fail to load CLSID".
Any ideas?
Thanks, again.
Oli.
Sorry, I am not familiar with any PIM software that will work on Win CE.
The devices we deal with here run Windows Mobile. Though it is based on Win CE (same kernel) it has a few additions on which most of the apps (fortunately not all) depend.
There is no such thing as cab for pocket outlook.
There is one thing I can recommend:
Search for "opening MIO C550". Someone created a cab for that device (unfortunately it runs CE 4.2) that adds ActiveSync to it and some dlls (like aygshell.dll) that Win Mobile apps need to run.
It also has some utilities though I am not sure about PIM.
I think this might work for you (at least you will be able to run a wider range of apps).
Oh, and the error you are getting is probably due to a missing COM object. Nothing to be done about that.
Levenum,
Thanks for your reply. It was helpful.
Your comment about Windows Mobile and Windows CE is very helpful. I thought that Windows Mobile and Windows CE were the same thing - different names for the same software. Thanks for clearing that up - apologies for ignorance. The fact that there are some things on Windows Mobile that are not on Windows CE may explain why some of the software I have tried hasn't worked.
I will try the "Opening MIO C550" search as you suggested. However, I can run Windows ActiveSync on the N100 as it is. (Although that's about it!) I'll post up here with details of how I get on ...
What do you mean by a "Missing Com Object"? What is a Com Object? You suggest that there is no way of fixing this - shame, as My Calender looks just about ideal for what I want to do!
Thanks again for your help.
Oli.
Please receive my apologies. I gave you incorrect model. There is no C550.
Mio P550 is a full PDA, but Mio C510 is a PND.
Any way here is the link, judging by the screenshots it has some kind of 'contact' app. Hope it helps.
'COM object' is a programming term. M$ invented the system and it is very problematic when moving programs around.
As you may know almost all windows programs rely on some DLL files in addition to EXE files as well. Those DLL files are programs too but they do not run by them selves but only offer functions to be used by other programs.
The idea was that if there is a common function, like say opening a window it would be in a DLL and instead of every programmer rewriting it in his code he would just call the function.
COM objects are stored in DLLs too but accessing them is more complicated. For one thing, its not enough for the DLL just to be there (like with normal DLLs) but it needs a registry entry. Have you ever dug through the registry and seen the CLSID key that has many sub keys that look like this: {a1234678-1234.....? Most of them are COM objects.
Virtual keyboards are implemented as COM objects on WM.
Levenum,
Thanks again.
It looks like I am onto a losing streak with this. I tried the details as described for the Mio C510, but to no avail - it doesn't work on the N100.
COM Objects ... thanks for the explanation. Am I right in understanding that the problem I have is a missing DLL file, when I try to run MyCalender? Would it be possible to put the relevant DLL file onto my machine? My Calender looks very much like the sort of thing I am looking to run, and I am frustrated at being so close to running it!
Failing that, does anyone else know of any PIM software that might run on WinCE?
Thanks again,
Oli.
Actually, what the error means is you are missing some registry entries.
It is most likely those entries are pointing to a DLL but there is no way of telling which DLL without knowing what the app looks for in the registry.
By the way, you do not need to follow all the instructions there.
You just need to get the cab and manually install it (I understand you can access file explorer on your device).
If that does not work, then sorry I am out of ideas.

Is there a way to use deeper folders in W6.1 Mobile office?

Hi,
I have recently bought a Samsung Omnia, which I am fairly happy with. ifonz makes it a gem!
Still one thing which I think is plain stupid is that MS 6.1 Office Mobile can only access folders to a "depth" of two folders.
I'm curious is there a registry tweak to get past this? Or any other way?
I need to keep notes, docs, photos and the like fairly organised.
Softmaker Office(70€) can do it, but is fairly expensive. So I think, if Softmaker can do it, it does not seem to be a limitation of Win Mobile but rather of office mobile.
It there is no workaround, how can I deinstall Win Office Mobile and replace it by Softmaker?
Office Mobile seems to be integrated in Win Mobile.
Please use simple instructions I am not a computer wizkid (but I can change reg entries if you tell me where).
Thanks a lot!!
Franziska
I finally solved this issue:search in developers site "filedlgchg" and you will find 2 files to put in windows ppc folder...(follow the instructions in the post).
To navigate in folders you must press in left corner of bottom bar(to go up)or directly in the folders in popup window(to go down)
It works, but only partial in office mobile..
Hi, at least I can save now where I want. Great. Still I can not open where I want. At least not in Office applications. Is there a work around for this too?
Thanks for your help,
Franziska
I don't use office application to open office files.I use shortcuts to single docs or folders in Mortbuttons application:try it, it's a very good software...and free!!

Best PIM software, anyone?

I've been searching for a good PIM software forever. I loved the PIM software that came with the PalmOS. Since changed to Windows Mobile, I have not found one that can match up with the native Palm PIM. I am not looking for much. All I want, is simple "search" function added to the Calendar and Task (todo) programs that comes with Windows Mobile 6.1. Is that too much to ask for?
All the commercial software packages I've tried, either, too slow, use up too much memory, not hooked up with Windows Mobile environment well, or all of the above.
Any suggestions! thanks very much!
Yes, me too. Since my Psion revo, I've not found anything similar. The one thing I miss is multiple diaries. With WM6 everything has to be on one diary. I would like to seperate my work and personal diaries (without use of 'categories'). I've looked and looked. Everything seems to be simply a 'front end' to the WM one, but nothing unique.
I had a great plug in on my PalmV that gave me a week view of my calendar on the screen just like a paper diary, why has no-one done this for the Pocket PC?

Check out ThumbCal, the latest version has an option for "Week view".
anyone know of real PIM s/w. not just a today front-end, but something that has it's own database/sync?

[Q] Offline note application with categories or tags for WM6.5?

I know it's weird for you to read someone ask this in the year 2014, but I'm actually using a HP iPAQ 216!
Anyway, I REALLY don't like it's note application. I used to use a Palm TX and I could organize everything in categories, then I could synchronize it with the Palm desktop software and I could find everything organized in the same categories and I could even edit them from my desktop computer.
Does anyone know of a similar application for Windows Mobile 6.5? Hopefully freeware, but it doesn't have to be, just as long as it does have those characteristics.
I installed Evernote for WM6.5 and it's really close to what I'm looking for, the major problem is that I can't read the notes without a WiFi connection. That's a BIG problem for me.
I REEEEEEEEEALLY hope someone can help me out .
