How to detect a GSM jammer? - General Questions and Answers

Hi!
Near our bibliothek a lot of people dont have any cellphone reception - what is not really logic regarding the surrounding concrete structure etc...
I am speculating that there is some kind of GSM jammer installed and am wondering if i can use "fieldtest.exe" to gather more information about this theory? If yes - which values are interesing?
Sorry for this noob answer - i am not into GSM tech at all so most of those value readings are not understandable for me...
Thanks for any hints!

Have your lot of people call your provider and tell them about the reception problem, at least here they will investigate the issue.
Maybe you could use OpenCellClient with GPS to walk around and figure out if there is a 'rogue' tower there, but I would think a jammer would just broadcast garbage and not behave like a tower.

I need some info on fieldtest

does anyone know what means what? such as, what readings should be in what range? I sawa post, where someone posted his fieldtest stuff, and someone responded that means the signal in your house sucks. bah. I need mo info. I wanna be able to do REAL radio tests for myself, not "wow.. this one has more bars" or "this one didn't work in my house". I'd like to see real info, so I can compare and be a bigger geek than I already am. I helped my dad with his touch pro, his was rather easy to figure out. this GSM version is NOT easier.
thanks

GSM Cell Phone Cracked

Hello everyone,
I just saw this on Drudge report and found it interesting.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/54ca8e66-f485-11de-9cba-00144feab49a.html
It talks about GSM code being broken and duplicated. I searched the forums but did not see any similar links. If I missed them then sorry about that. It's pretty interesting. ;O Enjoy.
On the same page as the one you posted

Although the name is a little funny, I had difficulty finding it as well
Pretty wild stuff...being able to listen in to any cell
Well kinda scary but im sure skilled person can do the next one to so does it really matter lol.

GPS vs A-GPS vs Both?

So, in looking at specs for Android phones, I generally use Wikipedia as a starting point to find out the basics and then look for info from there. I've noticed that frequently, phones will be listed as having GPS, A-GPS, or both in their specs.
I'm wondering what the difference between the two is and what advantage or disadvantages there are to having one, the other, or both in a phone?

While this info is indeed useful, I have already read it, and it hasn't answered my question, which is why I've posted here looking for further information.
lol fair enough but you haven't asked us what you'd like to know. What do you want to know that isn't in the wiki...............i could waffle on for ages explaining the basic principle, but the wiki explains this and gives links to further reading. Also using the xda google search button at the top of the page will bring up a mass of subjects.
A-GPS is generally faster at getting a fix, but you may need to download stuff before hand. It should work fine without, but it'll be as fast as GPS (no faster).
HTC devices often use QuickGPS, which downloads data to make a fix much faster (as in, 5-10 seconds instead of 50-60 seconds).
A-GPS is mostly for marketing, you're unlikely to notice that much of a difference, unless you're constantly switching GPS on and off.
AGPS is only useful if u have a phone signal too

Now, see, this is the type of information that I'm looking for. Now I know that AGPS is based on the cellular network and that if I go somewhere that there isn't phone signal, I can't continue to use my phone as a GPS tool.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that covers the part where I'm asking what the Wiki doesn't cover.
(NOTE: Yes, I'm a smart ass. I know it and run with it. There is no need for anyone to state it here as it would be redundant.)

Lol, far from me to be agreeing with you (on the smart ass thin) but I'm pretty sure the wiki article stated it was based on triangulation and related to the network....... unless I subconsciously mind melded with the wiki server

The Baseband Apocalypse - GSM Hacks..

Found this online. Pretty scary...
Description:
The Baseband Apocalypse
The baseband is the part of your phone that sends and receives broadcast signals. And it turns out that if your phone is on the GSM network, it's pretty damn easy to manipulate the baseband with all kinds of terrible tricks, from setting up fake base stations that will snoop on your conversations or text messages, to secretly sending nasty programs to your phone that could do everything from steal your data to turn your phone into a bug. When you make a call on the GSM network, who is really listening? Possibly everyone but the person you're hoping to talk to.
Although completely unrelated...it gets me wondering if some of these ROM devs are being honest in their development efforts... I'm not accusing ...just gets me thinkin... Does anyone smart enough to find out ever look?

Thanks for the good information....
I just downloaded this, and came to see if anyone posted about it. A better title might be "UK 3G Survey - You can help". That may encourage more people to take part.

If mods are reading this please change title to
'UK 3G Survey - You can help'
If they don't we're just have to keep doing bumps until people get so annoyed that they have to open thread and read it

How do i edit a title
Good to now.
Good to now.
Didn't find this too useful as I tend to turn off 3G when I'm not using it.
Plus O2's 3G seems non-existent here whereas T-Mobile have HSDPA coverage. Probably would make it inaccurate when they get survey results.
Good to now.
This is a good app, but to be honest why it can't if what I've read on the android market, is continsouly aksing for gps positioning, why it can't try and use network and wifi positioning or have that as an option to reduce battery may mnake sense, I'll give this app a go, as I do live in a rual area so if I can help I will.
