Thanks for the good information....

I just downloaded this, and came to see if anyone posted about it. A better title might be "UK 3G Survey - You can help". That may encourage more people to take part.

Good to now.

Good to now.

Didn't find this too useful as I tend to turn off 3G when I'm not using it.
Plus O2's 3G seems non-existent here whereas T-Mobile have HSDPA coverage. Probably would make it inaccurate when they get survey results.

Good to now.

This is a good app, but to be honest why it can't if what I've read on the android market, is continsouly aksing for gps positioning, why it can't try and use network and wifi positioning or have that as an option to reduce battery may mnake sense, I'll give this app a go, as I do live in a rual area so if I can help I will.

Mobitv shutting down howard forums is xda next

Did you see whats happening on Howard Forums. Apparently this could happen here.
Basically this is what happening. It turns out Mobitv stores links to their feeds in a plain text file that anyone with internet access can view. Apparently viewing this text file is considered 'hacking'. These feeds do not appear to be protected in an anyway and it appears anyone with a compatible phone can view them.

So wait what happened with MobitTV? I'm behind...
mobitv is trying to shut down howard forums for someone posting a glitch in mobitv's security and somehow thats ho-fo's fault
First of all, I don't know how this is related to Kaiser upgrade, but, anyway, after reading through their conversation, it is clear that MobiTV asked Howard to remove the links just like how Microsoft asked to remove ROMs from this website long time ago. I understand how one could think that those links are not violating anything but if the company already said so and is just asking to remove the links, then why not? Why escalate it?
Sorry about posting in the wrong thread but i asked the mod to move it to the right one.
Nah, it'll never happen to XDA. The mods here cave in pretty easy.

Howard, great catching up today. Again, we're big fans of the sight and our intention was never to bring your entire sight down or to "censor the Internet" like we're being accused. The irony is that is quite the opposite type of company we are and as one of the leaders in new media, we couldn't be more supportive of the rights of sights like yours. Please know that our first priority is always to fix any security issues with our system and we're doing that. Additionally, we also have a responsibility to our content and carrier partners to reduce the impact of any breaches to the system once they occur and that was really the basis for the correspondence you had with our legal team.
I look forward to continuing to find interesting and vibrant insights from HowardForums.

SERIOUSLY MAN, GIVE IT A FU*%IN REST.
The only thing you've accomplished is roaming and using t-mobiles 3G bands. Hence the "R" in your cell signal window. I feel bad for the people that are getting their hopes up, just stop. stop. stop.
For anybody who uses a G1 on AT&T and wants to get 3G....
ITS NOT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE WITH THE HARDWARE. PERIOD.
Ah, it doesn't matter what type of board you're in...there's always the guy who can't just leave and keeps re-registering....hahahahaha.
Their motto must be: "Teh interwebs...serious business"
I wonder what they would do in real life if they were just ignored from a public forum (equivalent of banned on an internet message board)?
This is the kicker too:
"I'm very sorry xda...
Thank you for your time!!"
Saying sorry to an internet message board? That's as lame as those car forum guys who get a different car and post their "Goodbye" thread. HAHAHAHA
I don't see the "R" that people mention...but then again, the image was changed at 4:00PM. Hmmmm....

Oh my God. You don't get it do you kid? You were banned because you were going to risk everyone damaging their phones for something that is very hopeful to accomplish. You're pictures don't mean ANYTHING without the methods of accomplishing it!!! We have over a dozen theme devs on here that can EASILY rename the .9.png files for the 3G icons. I've even looked into it just in case you actually posted screenshots. All it takes is a rename of the signal (ie Edge and 3G) icons in the apk file, sign it, flash it and you have your false evidence.
Bottom line.
Post your methods or get off XDA!!!!

GPS vs A-GPS vs Both?

So, in looking at specs for Android phones, I generally use Wikipedia as a starting point to find out the basics and then look for info from there. I've noticed that frequently, phones will be listed as having GPS, A-GPS, or both in their specs.
I'm wondering what the difference between the two is and what advantage or disadvantages there are to having one, the other, or both in a phone?

While this info is indeed useful, I have already read it, and it hasn't answered my question, which is why I've posted here looking for further information.
lol fair enough but you haven't asked us what you'd like to know. What do you want to know that isn't in the wiki...............i could waffle on for ages explaining the basic principle, but the wiki explains this and gives links to further reading. Also using the xda google search button at the top of the page will bring up a mass of subjects.
A-GPS is generally faster at getting a fix, but you may need to download stuff before hand. It should work fine without, but it'll be as fast as GPS (no faster).
HTC devices often use QuickGPS, which downloads data to make a fix much faster (as in, 5-10 seconds instead of 50-60 seconds).
A-GPS is mostly for marketing, you're unlikely to notice that much of a difference, unless you're constantly switching GPS on and off.

I agree, Google is great, as long as your in coverage. But if your in slow data or no data coverage area, it won't work. I know quite a few hard core hikers that buy hand held gps units because of this. Maybe the OP wants the same.
Unfortunately I'm not on the up and up of what Nav software is available for Andriod that doesn't require a data connection. Basically something that downloads the maps for you.
OP, if you are looking for a mapping program that doesn't require a data connection check out MapDroyd in the market. Seems to be pretty decent.
Double post. Sorry.

Latest version of Maps allows downloading a 10mi radius of map segments stored locally on the phone. I believe you can download up to 6 such 10mi sections. That should cover a pretty good hiking area. You can do this for any area, so download ahead of time if you'll be out of cell/wifi range.
In the past I've used RMAPS with downloaded maps. Problem is it takes a bit of effort to get it set up for the area you want. A plus is it lets you download from a wide variety of mapping sources.
http://balamaci.wordpress.com/2010/06/16/android-offline-maps/#comment-42
RMAPS is for walking navigation since it doesn't include a routing or driving option. But you said hiking, which is why I mentioned it.
navigator
works perfectly for me straight away. signal locks within 10 seconds, even when I am indoors, and places the arrow right on top of my location. according to HTC tech support (yes I know, just passing along the info), a factory reset will 90% of the time resolve the issue you're having.
Navigon you are using is pirated. You need a 3g or WiFi connection to launch it. Or to freeze market.
Its the best navigation for android and you should buy it.

prime example of a total duche.

N920I on Tmobile.

Planning on buying a N920I. I know I am going to miss out on Samsung Pay and VoLTE. Neither are too big of concerns for me but I was wondering if these kind of things can be flashed on to the phone.
Also. The N920I does not have compatible 3G frequencies for Tmo. Is that going to affect me at all? I live in Los Angeles so I am always on 4G LTE, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks!
I'm probably wrong on this one, but I didn't think international phones can work on US LTE bands, although I guess it makes sense that some would.
As far as Samsung Pay goes, you won't be able to flash it, since flashing trips KNOX which, in turn, breaks Samsung Pay. As for VOLTE, I'm pretty sure it is ONLY available on the T-Mobile variant.

Again, I'm probably wrong about international phones not working on US LTE. That's just what I've always heard, however it's not too crazy to think that nowadays that's no longer the case, especially if it has the same frequencies. As far as VOLTE goes, I am fairly sure that's a Tmo only thing, but I could be wrong about that as well. It would be cool to confirm this one way or the other though.
You guys do realize that if you simply research your phone and Tmobiles band you will find the answer. All the answers are out there for you just search my friend or call T-Mobile

Get off your high horse. I never said I was right to call you names (my bad on that). Don't insult individuals thinking they don't know everything. Also everyone searches things differently. No one has the same search strategy. Just because you found it doesn't mean I would have.
..
blah, blah, blah. Wow. 2 pages of bickering and no real answers.
VoLTE is soft or firmware based, so it would be possible in theory. The "c" is variant firmware is closer to "t" firmware, I think, when compared to the "i" variant. (Both the "t" and "c" variants are using ims while the "i" doesn't. It may even be possible to flash the "t" modem to the "c" (or "i") variants, but I honestly don't know for sure.
I'm currently using a "i" variant phone with a "c" variant kernel with a SYSTEM partition from a "t" variant. The modem is still "i". Oh, and because I wanted to mix things up as much as possible, I'm doing all this on AT&T (which normally uses a "a" variant.) No, it doesn't work with AT&T VoLTE, but I don't have AT&T firmware, modem, etc. (Only the SIM.)
So... if I were trying what you are, here's what I'd do:
0. Have a TMO device handy that supports VoLTE. This is just so I could compare when I _should_ see VoLTE and when I shouldn't.
1. Make sure I can ODIN my phone back to stock. That means having ODIN, having the proper odin files to get back to stock, etc.
2. Realize that if I haven't already tripped KNOX, I will now (and that I can never restore KNOX.)
3. Follow one of the various guides for root/TWRP (or Philz.)
4. Flash a PERMISSIVE "i" kernel. (I've mixed the "skyhigh" 'i' with a tmobile deodex with no problems.) -- you need permissive as none of the 'i' kernels have IMS policies in place.
5 Flash a TMO deodex firmware.
6. See what happens...
You MAY be able to flash a "t" modem on the "i" device using something like "flash fire" from Chainfire. I can't tell you that it'd work (or that it won't) as I've never tried it. (You wouldn't be able to cross flash modems using ODIN.) Flashing the different modem is a risk. I don't THINK it would brick anything, but that's only a guess and I can't know for sure.
Good luck
Gary
