Hi folks;
I haven't had a Windows Mobile device in years - last time I had one it was still CE, so I have a bit of a learning curve to climb. I'm looking forward to it though; my HTC Trinity arrives in two days and I'm excited.
One thing I'm really curious about is Bluetooth security. I've read a fair bit recently about a lot of mobile phones / basic smartphones and how they severly lack any sort of bluetooth security, meaning other people can pair to your device without your knowledge to send you messages, copy files to/from the device via OBEX, that sort of thing.
I am wondering what sort of security I can expect out of a WM5 device for Bluetooth (and to some extent Wi-Fi as well). Can people pair with me without my knowledge?
Will my A2DP connection to my new Moto HT820's be easily eavesdropped? It probably uses that default 0000 key like most headsets do.
Also, what sort of tools are available to have a bit of fun with other people's Bluetooth phones? Are there tools for WinMo to send people SMS messages via BT, or listen to headsets, that sort of thing?
If that's against the rules around here, fair enough, don't post anything that would get us in trouble.
Admittedly, it's sort of a lame script-kiddie thing to do, but I think I'd get a kick out of it and I wouldn't do anything to harm someone's device - it would just be a fun learning experience to mess around with people's phones remotely.
It's also good to raise awareness of the relative insecurity of a lot of these personal-area networking devices.
A bump in case anyone has any ideas today.

I use btCrawler:
http://www.silentservices.de/btCrawler.html
You need to create this registry key if you want to use Bluesnarf:
\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\Mode\"ISC"=1 (DWORD)
I saw this thread over on Modaco yesterday http://www.modaco.com/The-Real-Bluejack-for-Pocket-PC-t250841.html
$6 was cheap enough, and it's very good.
Noob thread alert
omg how nooby is this post?
ok heres a very simple concept
bluetooth off = no access
bluetooth on = available access, however.
most phones these days (even if they support obex object push) have other securitys in place to stop these sorts of attacks.
im really sick of wana be "hackers" carrying on about bluetooth hacking, gawd go learn odbc or something usefull.
even if you could get into someones phone with your elite hacking skills what would you honestly get out of it, "wow look at me i can msg some complete stranger from someones phone book...."
sorry but as a programmer it really grinds my gears seeing noobs post about things they dont understand.
im sure people feel the same about you, when you approach a subject you not an expert or have relevanby experiance
people ask cos they dont know,if you dont like that simply close the page
noobs post about things they dont understand
that why they ask mate,we are all noobs in some field relax
the best way to secure your device while BT is on is to make sure its not discoverable.. Nothing is 100% (except leaving BT off completely)
Also Smurf is a cool little program, but it will only bluejack.. but certainly makes for some fun and odd expressions from strangers

Chill out dude, everyone is n00b in some area... In your case it should be in the area of being modest...
The xda community is here to help and offer solutions...
Alright, I would hardly consider myself a "noob" simply because I've only been posting here for a week or so. Perhaps once you learn to capitalize letters and spell words, your flames will become more effective.
The question was aimed at determining the level of security present in WM5 devices, and to see if there were any little easy fun programs to send messages or files, that sort of thing. I don't want to "hack" people to any serious extent, or I would fire up my Debian laptop and listen in to the communications that way.
Well, enough out of me. I'll let you get back to wanking it to pictures of Michael Moore.
everyone sit back and relax, have a drink, or smoke, or whatever you do to relax.. If the flames continue then i am going to lock this thread.. lets stay on the topic please. Now group hug, everyone kiss and make up
Just realize that not everyone knows everything about anything.. some people are noobs in some aspect, flaming isnt going to help anyone and thats what this community is about. If you dont want to be a part of that then you know where the exit button is at
Sorry, I probably went a little far on the defensive, but someone who can't even spell or type a complete sentence doesn't have much right calling someone he doesn't know a "noob".
I've bought that Bluejacker program, and it looks to be a pretty impressive tool. Most useful will be the ability to save OBEX transfers directly to my storage card - a few of my friends have overglorified HDD-based media players and I think they may have Bluetooth, so it should be interesting to try transferring movies around.

That's the one I bought. It needs a few bugfixes (mostly visual) but it made it a lot easier to get all my ringtones and whatnot from my old Sony Ericsson T610.

looks like i will have to check it from home.. [email protected] company firewalls
I've been using it a couple of days now. It's the best Bluetooth utility I have seen on the PPC.
It's a shame it's locked to my Uni though because sometimes I take the Wizard out as it's so much smaller, and I would have liked to use it on that on those odd days.
EDIT: 0vZ just contacted me on that MoDaCo thread to say a 2nd license is only $3 USD. Peanuts to pay for such a functional product, so I'll do that.
Oh and just a note to st3v3, no, this app isn't really *hacking*, but people's stupidity means you can probably quite easily download every text message on their phone.
Changing your BT name to "incoming message" or something and accessing a phone might bring up a message like "incoming message is trying to access your phone. Allow, yes or no"
Lots of people send files and send silly messages by BT now, most non-technical people would simply click yes, giving you OBEX, or AT access to their phone.
I didn't buy this app for this purpose, but I have just discovered how easy it is, I might have a little play.
yeah and its the same as on the old nokias if you have your name as blank (forget how to do that there was a way) any of the old nokias (ngage i know it works) would lock up becuase it wouldnt display the name.
still not what I would call hacking and being able to read someone’s text messages (which would require someone’s bt to be left on and that they had the right type of phone)
All in all its still a pipe dream of misconstrued wana be 15 year olds with nothing better to do than sit around telling their friends what elite hackers they are.
I'm an early adopter of the N1. My G1 will now only have wifi connectivity and I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use. I think the desire for that kind of optimization will only grow as people start replacing their first loves. I might be completely off-base, I have been up for a couple days. I'm not even sure what I want when I say optimization. But I didn't know what I wanted from custom roms when I got my first G1 and now I can't wait until Cyanogen drops his first full rom for the N1.
I see where you are comming from.. as I LOVE my G1 and at the same time lusting for the N1. I would like to have another use for the G1, something like a media center remote.. or anything.
I think this is a good idea and look forward to some of the dev responses.
You dont need a special rom for it without service. If you dont have service then phone and the like just wont work. Uninstall what you dont want. But there arent going to be any devs making roms just for g1 without service, it is a complete waste of time. There wouldnt be anything different, minus no phone.
i dont really see the point of that tbh - you can change the call button to open something else for example
furthermore - wrong section

If the device no longer needs to maintain the functionality of a phone, the door is even wider open. It could, for example, be a rom with debian cooked in, or it could be something like no6969el described.

Really? This is not the place to discuss a certain type of rom?
I think the both of you are too closed minded.
you are asking a question, not contributing to the good of the android community
they answer is simple - yes...but pointless
i am far from close minded - i am always up for expanding the capabilities of my phone....not detracting from them like this idea
you can use the phone as a media centre remote with the aid of a simple app on the market
you can disable mobile data and use only wifi
you can reprogram the call button to do whatever you want
you can install debian/ubuntu rather easily and use it with vncviewer
all these things can already be done using stock android - nevermind having to modify it
Nothing I have said or asked has detracted from android. Asking questions has its place in development, it causes thinking. Re-purposing old gen hardware happens, sometimes with fantastic results. First generation android devices, like the G1, have many possibilities other than telephony.
I am wondering if there are any roms that are optimized for non-phone use.

I have done the battery mod, stock lock screen, and Cognition (latest version, voodoo enabled) on my phone. Im getting bored now even though the phone has everything I need/ want. Are there any other cool things Im missing or dont know about? I would like to know all of the cool, well what you think is cool, mods that you have done to your phone.
Learn to make your own roms. That should keep you busy for a LONG time.

I actually have been thinking about making an app. Any ideas for a good app?
A Cifs.ko implementation for our Captivate. Don't worry, I keep mentioning it and no one seems to answer. . I'd do it myself but don't have a clue of where to start.

I've always wanted to make an app for "ambient noise." I wanted my phone to "poll" the noise level before ringing and making adjustments appropriately. I like to have my phone on full volume for when I'm driving and got the radio up or out in the loud shop, but not so loud when I'm in a quiet enviroment such as a meeting, bank, store, etc.....
I see some problems with the idea such as delay on the ring and what not.....but I always thought it was a good idea....
And yes, I know how to put my phone I silent or hit the volume button to turn it down before hand.....jeez....I just like automation!

I just fount the coolest feature. You touch the phone icon and push seven individual numbers. Then hit the green button that has a phone on it. If you wait a moment a "person" will start talking to you. It appears that AT&T has assign a different automated voices to each number combination. The voice recognition works very well because they seem to provide very logical responses. If you use the same number more than once the automated voice seems to become irritated and threatening. Some of the ones with "sexy voices" don't seem to work anymore. I think I used the number combination too many times. Maybe we should make a list of working codes?
Its actually a good idea. Seems do able i mean you have a microphone and they already have apps out there that will put your phone in a certain volume mode depending on appointments in your calendar. Theres gotta be a way. There are sensors that work for brightness so why not this? I haven't made an app before so it will be a huge undertaking for me but ill look into it and see whats possible. I love a challenge.
Really?

I agree this was a great idea. I even pulled out my phone to see if Tasker had a variable for mic input. Though it does poll proximity sensor and light sensor, it does not check the mic through preset variables. I am curious enough though, that I think I will head to their website and see what manual input might get that result.

It is a sarcastic reference to our excessive expectations and lack of reverence in some of the more simplistic aspects of our miraculous devices. I sympathize with your original post and understand the need to constantly scour XDA for the latest release or mod. With that understanding I found humor in mocking "ourselves" with the most basic and intended function of our phones...TO BE A PHONE!
It is easy to misread humor. A forum does not allow for pitch change, facial expressions or sarcastic tone. It can be hard for some people to communicate efficiently and enjoyably when they are reading something outside of the intended interpretation. When you combine this with the varying levels of intellect, age and types of humor within this community you are bound to find those who cannot interpret or understand a bit of sarcasm. We are not all born with a "Bevis and Butthead" idea of humor, but I will do my best to include a fart joke for you in my next post . I hate to exclude anyone in my audience.
-"Everything in the world will be laughed at by one, but nothing will be laughed at by all." <--- I just made that up. I don't mind if you use it later. It's cool.
Before I go I want to prevent any confusion.
This post contained the following emotions in various degrees and locations:
Had a feeling!
I had a feeling it was a joke, and more often than not people will post ridiculous stuff about how the poster is an idiot because they did not search the forum and things of that matter.
Its hard not to get a little defensive when you feel like someone is making fun of you. Im glad that you put that part in there about sympathizing with me because I honestly look through tons of pages each day looking for the next best thing or project.
You are correct about how some of us tend to lose site of the fact that it also works as a phone so im glad that you pointed that out. After i found out it was a joke it did seem funny. I rarely use it to call people now days because I would rather text or send them an email. So yeah that is funny.
P.S. I am a pretty funny guy according to my mom <---haha and fart jokes are always appreciated.

On a more OP related note. I am beginning to feel like a sales rep for Tasker since I have mentioned it in 3 posts today BUT... it has allowed me to expand/experiment when not flashing. Here are some things I have done that may interest you or give ides for apps.
1. FaceDown - I have the phone automatically go to speaker phone and max volume when it is placed face down during a call. Got the idea from my buddy's Tilt2 (winmo).
2. QuietTime - Phone automatically switches to silent during weeknights from 10:30pm-5:30am and when I am in class based on my selected schedule.
3. CarDock - When headphone jack, usb power, and left side orientation are all enabled/plugged it triggers the following: BT ON (connects to car stereo), GPS ON, Volume Maxed, Car Home launched.
4. GoodHusband - Widget that automatically sends a "Thinking about you" or "I love you" message to the wife. It works nice and quietly without opening the messaging application. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to make it randomize through a list of messages. That would make it perfect.
5. PhoneFind - Specific text message sent to my phone will make it quietly reply with a current GPS location and battery level. (I'm a lucky owner with GPS)
I hope some of these are inspiring. I have enjoyed toying with them.

I am about to throw this thing out the window. It holds a signal better than my Inspire but I'm in a new state (Louisiana) so I NEED my GPS to work and even Telenav just WILL NOT get a GPS lock and fails. It used to work before ... Ugh I'm so over it! And searching for GPS doesn't get me anywhere... Can someone tell me how to make this thing lock on to the satellites? GPS test finds ONE and it won't lock even after 30 minutes!

Watch the swearing in the forums. I will say this only once.
As for your issue the GPS on the captivate has always been known to be less then perfect. the GPS built into a phone should never be used to replace a stand alone GPS mainly when you are new to an area.

not trying to argue, but the rule about swearing is gone from the " member conduct "http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
however it does say to be aware of what might be offensive to others.
2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.

First time I have ever been warned about swearing... And I've been on here for years. I'll try to mind it but if its such a big issue then why not just filter it like all the other forums?
As for the GPS - my Captivate used to have PERFECT GPS locks - and that fix didn't work either... As for the radio, its because KJ2 doesn't work well at ALL in my area...
I have gone over most of your posts sense last night and for the most part you have not been swearing.
As for the rule. Yes it was removed (will be put back soon) as It is understood that we treat each other with respect and understand that kids come to this forum alot. So the swearing is not allowed as it is not excepted in any polite setting.
TRusselo you know me well from my time with the captivate and you know that it is as simple as if you wouldnt want your kids reading it then dont post it.
The sheer disrespect floating around the forums has gotten out of hand and the swearing is a Big sign of it.
While swearing at each other maybe cool in high school or on the street we require that more respect be shown while here.
EtherealRemnant You have been here for a while your right. So you should know better. A few years ago the title of this thread would have been ban worthy, but I am in a good mood so a warning I think will make my point just as well.
Well I apologize for being offensive - I'm sure you can understand how annoying the Captivate can be as a device... I will try to refrain from swearing in the future but I wasn't directing it at a specific person, more at the phone. I understand about the kids though.

Yes I can understand completely. Thank you.
I flashed the latest leak of KJ3 found in the development section, and with the stock kernel and stock everything (only rooted), my GPS performance improved. More than once was I able to get a lock faster when not moving and maintain it a little longer after driving. Of course, it was still pretty crappy... after a few minutes, the phone went back to searching and took ages to lock again, which it did only after I stopped and waited. But I guess it was better than the GPS on any other ROM or even stock that I have tried.

I must have just had a good Captivate. I got it launch day and my GPS performance was spot on... now I don't know what happened to it. And its so annoying to flash things over and over to get it right. I wish I could combine certain parts of my Inspire with the Captivate... Basically throw the Captivate internal storage and antenna into the Inspire... >_>

I have gone over most of your posts sense last night and for the most part you have not been swearing.
As for the rule. Yes it was removed (will be put back soon) as It is understood that we treat each other with respect and understand that kids come to this forum alot. So the swearing is not allowed as it is not excepted in any polite setting.

once again, not arguing, i love a good discussion,
i thought it was the position of xda that xda is not for kids, it is for developers. and that xda caters to the devs, not the random passing people.
and yes some developers are kids, but kids with enough intellect and smarts to know what bad words are and are able to make up their own minds about using them.
I know the rule is somewhat lifted and i refrain from using the words unless they are required to emphasize a point. (sometimes really frickin needed).
but back to topic....
here are some CWM3 flashable GPS configs i put together.
stock Gingerbread ATT
stock Gingerbread Rogers
pb3 GPS tweaks
my personal WIP GPS config (mostly from JSV and some from h3llstorms config)

Grow up people. We try not to use profanity but as adults we also look the other way when it is used. Just because you dont want to see/hear it used doesnt mean you can impose upon others that don't have a problem with it. There are plenty of forums available that won't hurt your delicate feelings.
Carry on.... /rollseyes

Sorry I don't look the other way and anyone that knows me as a mod knows this to be true. It is not a matter of hurt feelings it is a matter of respect. Swearing while talking to someone or asking for help is rude, uncalled for, and not allowed. Simple as that. Now I have been guilty of a swear word every now and then myself, it happens.
And your right T. We do cater to developers which are to be showed respect. That means no swearing at them.
I will not debate this further. Swearing in the forums is not tolerated period. Wanna swear at someone then don't do it here.
As for the kids part as much as I would love for XDA to go back to a true developers site we have to accept that average people are here now and that encludes every kid that gets their parents to buy them an Android/WP device so they can be cool too, even though when they do something they don't understand like flashing a rom it just makes them look dumber then they are.
Trusselo: you do realize that a lot younger generation of kids are getting into things like this. i bet theres more 12-15 year old kids on here than you think which is the future for everybody. i dont see know point in swearing around here anyways.
on topic: ya my gps sucks bad to. i dont even bother to use it
i unfortunately got virtuous unity 2.39 installed. i receive small MMS on it, and the devs for virtuous unity are too stubborn to come up with a fix for it.. so, is there an app that lets you send and recieve mms?
GO SMS is your way to go
GO SMS usually is the best way to go because you can adjust your mms settings.

Well, fortunately you can flash any ROM you like if you are unhappy with the one you have right now....
I'd suggest putting more effort into actively seeking a solution for your problem and less effort into making childish digs at developers who do these things in their own time free of charge for the benefit of the community.....
You probably could have answered your own question in the time it took you to type your OP.
This is a system issue, no app is going to fix it for you. If the rom you're on isn't making your phone appear as a model supported by your carrier, the carrier will compress the picture to the smallest supported size on their network. The file usually in question is /system/customize/mns/default.XML. that has to make the phone appear as one on your carriers network

i suggest putting more effort into attracting females and less effort into trolling and insulting others like an immature little girl on this forum which helps others and has no time tolerating nonsense from people who refuse to got out their houses.
you probably couldve gotten a girlfriend in the amount of time it takes you to stay at home afraid of going out your house.

thanks katiepea. how do i make my phone apear like the model its supposed to be in the carrier's network in this custom rom? how can i modify the default.XML file to correct this issue? and thanks for the reply and iappreciate your needed feedback.
My suggestion would be to find a stock rom for your phone, extract that file, and either push with adb or move it to your current install
why not just flash a different rom that already has the fix implemented? most roms that have it will list it in the rom features on the first post.
Go SMS Pro is now PROO You have thousands of themes to this app
