Hello,
I have a HTC Touch 3G which an emplyee needs to use as a pda only. So, he won't be using it as a phone. The pda synchronizes mail and calender items by air (MS Exchange direct push). Does anybody know how I can disable the phone function. Or how I can delete/hide the text Phone in the display in the menu bar at the bottom left on the display.
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I cannot remove the sim card because the phone needs to synchronize email and calender items using microsoft exchange direct push. The phone is only used as a pda which synchronizes these items over the air. The user may not make phonecalls with it.

then the second option!!!!!
or third or fourth!!!
I turnedthe phone off in Comm manager,
However, the text Phone is still displayed iin the left corner at the bottom of the main screen, or home screen however you call it. When I click it it says "the phone is switched off, would you like to turn it on?". So the user is still able to use it.
If that is the case, then ask your operator to place a barr on outgoing calls (not including data of course). You could do this on your phone but is easily reversable.
Doesn't help the OP but i know this is very easy to do on a BlackBerry attached to an Enterprise Server. A policy can be sent which disables the phone function but leaves everything else running.

in my messaging options, under windows live I have my hotmail account.
now can I set this up to check for mail ever 5 mins or so, and then when there is new mail, give me a new message tonè whilst the phone is in standby, like a sms?
cheers.
If you have Windows Mobile 6, your mail should be push from Hotmail. Mine is.

under your Live messenger option in your ppc there is option on how often you wan to check for new Email.
Since I remember there is also a option which says "as arrives". That means emeddiatly after the mail arrives in your Hotmail account the mail will be pushed to your mobile device.
I confirm this option and really after few seconds the mail arrives, it will be also received on the hand device
Anyhow this option cost a lot battery power. therefore I set it every 15-30min.
ive found that option, set it to 15mins, sent myself a mail, waited an hour nothing?
still have to manualy send/recieve
in the options for sync, it says manual, I change it to every 15 mins etc go done and done to exit it, as soon as I go bck to check it, it has reverted back to manual again?
how do I make the 15 min option stick?

Did you try to fine-tune the push mail heartbeat rate to decrease this - or, force the handheld to operate in GPRS mode instead of 3G?

fine-tune, no idea what that is?
yes ive got my 3g off, as the hermes wont recieve any calls with it on? another issue posted elsewhere on here.
So i take it i need to be in 3G for it to work?
i go to windows live,
>menu
>options
>3 sync schedule
>sync frequency
then change the drop down from manual to every 15 minutes
>Done
>Done
Then when going back into it again it says manual, ive just done all this with 3g switched on?

Yes, Exactly same thing happens to mine 'Hermes' with WM6.
But i get my e-mail as they arrive. I really wanted to to do the 'PUSH' only with in spcefied time frame! Which did not work for me for Hotmail account.
So i built this little program to assist me to do timed syncs(Check under my signature for rk-OSR
will have a try, cheers
Hello...
After putting a new ROM on my phone...I'm having a weird issue. First off, I've double and triple checked my settings and they match what gmail requires and how it was set before the new ROM. secondly, all other data services (weather updates, web browsing, phone class, SMS, etc.) are working perfectly.
But if I try to send an email or manually send/receive, my phone pops out a message from my data connection that says "cannot connect: cannot connect with current connection settings. to change your connection settings, tap settings." and then provides a settings link and dismiss button. The rom used the auto config for ATT which seems to have gotten everything else working as expected, but I simply cannot send / receive email.
If i login to gmail directly from opera, everything works fine - but i cannot receive updates right away - slightly annoying.
Where it gets even weirder is the gmail java app will not download or send messages either.
Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong? Would this be a rom specific issue - or is a configuration for my phone wrong?
Thanks in advance everyone
hate to bump...but just curious if anyone else has experienced anything like this.
thanks.
I'm assuming when you typed in your Gmail address, Windows stated it found the setting and configured everything for you. The problem is Windows configures your Internet connection to be "The Internet". Deep inside the Gmail settings their is an option to change this to "MEdia Net". This may be your problem.
Go to MENU, then TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then click on GMAIL. Then click on EDIT ACCOUNT SETUP, then NEXT 4X, then ADVANCED SERVER SETTINGS. Then change THE INTERNET to MEDIANET. Then some more dones, and nexts, and finish. Hopefully this is the problem for you.
I've had similar problems and got to the point where I suspect it is something to do with ActiveSync.
I could receive emails, but not send emails, unless I deleted my account and reset it up again (not ideal). I started to realise this happened after I had connected via USB to certain connections, i.e. not a charger and not a computer, for example a USB car charger. In these situations the message would pop up asking me what I wanted to connect as: ActiveSync, External Harddrive or whatever the other option is.
It seems to me like the phone wasn't getting the right message and was then getting itself very much confused.
Deleting the account and resetting it up helped. Eventually (last weekend) I have Hard reset.
I'm also careful about which USB connections I now use.
Don't know if this provides some insight or use?
UPDATE: THis just happened to me again and I should point out that I don't use gmail, it's my own domain mail hosted by EasySpace. I suspect the problem is HTC Touch Pro though. I have been listening to music on my Touch Pro with a USB multi connector (3.5mm + power + other USB) connected. Wrote an email and it wouldn't send. Disconnected the cable, still wouldn't send, stopped all running apps (Messenger, ActiveSyn, Windows Media), restarted Messenger and did a send receive. This time it worked.
For me this is definitely a dodgy ActiveSync issue.
Additional gmail problems
I've also had email problems using GMail. I originally set up my gmail account as a pop account (I have my own domain forwarded there) and wanted it to reflect my address as my domain. It originally connected and started downloading the emails. Then the account vanished! The emails are still there and taking up the first account slot in my TF3D, but when I go to accounts it is not listed. After a hard reset I restored with PPM backup and it placed the emails back in there, but still no account listed. I also can't open the emails, I just see the envelope icon with the preview of the last message downloaded. I've since added gmail as IMAP, but also had trouble with that in not being able to send emails. I deleted the account and then added again (IMAP) to try and by-pass the auto setup the phone does for GMail, but still no luck. What's worse, it's added this addition to the 3rd little envelope icon in TF3D, so now I have 1. Non-functioning account 2. Empty 3. Current IMAP
Anyone know where this data is stored so I can at least go clear out the first 2 slots so the current account being used will be the first one in the list? Also, anyone figure out the fix for sending emails? I'll try the advanced setting change from The Internet to MediaNet and see if that works. It's rather pointless having the emailing picture phone that you can't email pictures from!
Changed 'The Internet' to MediaNet, still no go on the sending.
I have a HTC Touch - Windows Mobile 6.0 device and recently changed mobile provider. Now whenever I active the phone on my device I get a pop-up with the same message each time (an ad for backing up the Sim contacts with the provider). If I press ok I get another pop-up 30 seconds later.
I looked for a way to turn off the pop-ups but can't find anything. Does anybody know a way to turn this off?
I don't have a solution for stopping the messages, but might I suggest actually taking the SMS's advice and backing up your contacts, maybe then it will actually stop bugging you?
Thanks Jadel I don't think that will help however, though I won't be able to test until I fully switch providers. My contacts are already backed up in Gmail, Hotmail and Exchange.
May be there is contact backup as sim service? Go to sim services and look for this service if any????? May be you can do something from there.

that's a good suggestion. it seems your provider has something to do with this as i'm not familiar with anything that offers this weird thing automatically.
My sister recent went from a Blackberry to a Thunderbolt. She liked how on the BB she could delete an email off her phone and still keep it on the server and wants to know if it's possible to do this on the Tbolt. She doesn't use gmail. It's a Cox Communications email account. Is it possible to do this on Android?

Stolen from another forum (original post regarded an EVO - but likely applies to all Android OS phones.

Mail accounts use one of 3 protocols: Exchange, IMAP and POP. Both Hotmail (as of a few weeks ago) and Exchange use over-the-air (Active) sync technology so when you delete a message on your phone, it's removed from the server and thus your client program as well (web/Outlook). IMAP also supports a similar 2-way update.
In order to only delete messages off your phone but not the server, you need to set up your mail accounts with POP instead. POP downloads a copy of and sends mail to/from the server -- nothing else. Hotmail supports POP but your Exchange server may or may not (a lot of larger companies policies do not). You'd have to contact the Administrators to find that out.
If they don't allow POP on Exchange, then ask if they can forward a copy of your mail to another public mail service, like Gmail. Then you can add the Gmail account to your phone via POP.
Remember, if you still want to sync your Contacts and Calendar with Exchange, you need to keep those and just uncheck Mail instead of deleting the Exchange account entirely.
-----------------
My 2c:
Not sure if it will work - I personally just delete on the fly, be damned the server. However, when I had an old LG v11000 (Envy Touch) I had the VZW email service on it - and even if I deleted from the phone, it was sitting on the server when I logged into Gmail. It was set up "POP3" style.
IF you go under mail/menu/more/settings/send & Receive you can check the box that says "delete mail on server" to turn it on or off. I turn it off so that it will leave a copy on the server but remove it from my phone.

I am having the same, or a similar problem. On my PC I use POP3 to access my mail; the ISP recommended using IMAP on the HTC (with different "in" and "out" mailbox settings for the HTC IMAP i.e. on the HTC two different settings for in and out). Was working fine but then found that messages I had received on my HTC were not appearing on my PC when I got home (my PC had been off, usually it is on, syncing every 2 minutes). I think this is because I had deleted them from my HTC in the meantime.
Trouble is, there is no setting ""delete mail on server" to check or uncheck under mail/menu/more/settings/send & receive, so I cannot follow the above advice. Only Mail size limit, Update schedule, Download options (it's not in there), Auto download message, Folder to sync, Reply with original text and Always bcc me.
What am I missing please ? Software says it is Android 2.3.3.
Thanks in advance.
I use K9 mail and go to more/settings/fetching mail/when I delete
I am flummoxed. I changed the HTC settings from IMAP to POP and did some tests; nothing being deleted ie still available on server. But when I looked at "Send and receive" options, I now have a list with 2 new option, inluding ""delete mail on server". It was not there before. Honest !!
I have been bak and re-set the thing to IMAP, and then the option about deleting from the server disappears again. So I am not going mad. But why should the options be different ?
low on memory
My father In-law has a Thunderbolt and is constantly having a low on memory issue on his phone.. When I go and look at his app's, his exchange is hogging up 2.6 gigs of memory while everything else (APPS) is using only KB'S of memory nothing big.. How would I be able to transfer his exchange email to the SD card,, He has a 32 gig card with 26 gigs of it being free.
Thanks for your help.
Hey guys, so i have a problem. I know that in the contacts I can hide all the repeated contacts, meaning the duplicates that show up from google, and t-mobile, and the ones on the SIM card. I have all my contacts linked thro HTC facebook. But when I go to the dialer or to send message it shows all my contacts, so some people show up 4 times!
Is there anyway to hide all the duplicate contacts in dialer and MMS, and secondly, when I receive a message from someone it shows their SIM contact which has no picture and their name as I put it in, and not as it has been "linked"
Thanks in advance!
I am on the same boat. Its annoying cause I only want the Google contacts. Mines has both synced T-Mobile backup and Google. Gonna reset the phone and remove the T-Mobile app before I sync anything and get back to u

I had this problem and it was unbelievably frustrating when I first got this and after a few days of searching and banging my head against the wall, I found something that worked.
This is how you solve it (or how I solved mine).
1: Sync everything to Google. Edit the contact list in google (use the automatic duplicate deletion), delete useless contacts etc.
2. Remove contacts from EVERYWHERE. Sim card, phone, uncheck google sync. Your phone should then be completely empty for contacts.
3. Re-sync with google contacts. if you want you can copy it back to the SIM and you shouldn't get doubles. I think I just left it with google only but the end result is I don't have 9 different "danny's" show up when I go to compose new message because I know three of them.
Ok great, I'll try that out.. When they gave me my phone, I told the employee at the store that I didn't want the tmobile contacts, and yet, she still set it up. I hope they fix these silly thongs with the update
Try this
I had the same problem, shows same contact more then 1 time. i resolved it this way
1) Go to Contacts (App)
2) Press Menu button (2nd touch button from left)
3) Select View
4) Now select (Check Mark) the contact you want to see. in my case i unchecked all option but Google and Facebook for HTC
5) Select done.
now it will only shows single entry for each contact
Thanks
