HTC’s official response to a “drivers issue”
From PhoneMag
HTC is committed to delivering a portfolio of devices that offer a wide variety of communication, connectivity and entertainment functionality. HTC does not offer dedicated or optimized multimedia devices and can confirm that its Qualcomm MSM7xxx-based devices do not use ATI’s Imageon video acceleration hardware.
HTC believes the overall value of its devices based on their combination of functionality and connectivity exceeds their ability to play or render high-resolution video. These devices do still provide a rich multimedia experience comparable to that of most smartphones and enable a variety of audio and video file formats. HTC values its customers and the overall online community of mobile device enthusiasts and fans. HTC plans to include video acceleration hardware in future video-centric devices that will enable high resolution video support.

It is interesting to hear that the Tytn II does not use ati imageon. When Tcpmp was loaded onto my hermes it would have a ati imageon option under options > video.
Now on the Kaiser there is no option at all for ati imageon.
Im not the most knowledgeable on this board regarding software, but does tcpmp "search" for the hardware on the device when it is installed?

Now isn't that interesting...
So there is no ATI chip in it? Or is the driver not included??

The chip is there, just no drivers.
Looks like that bounty is about to get higher...
Theres no driver and we wont get any either. "HTC plans to include video acceleration hardware in future video-centric devices that will enable high resolution video support. "
I think that it means that maby in the next device. Do they really think I will buy another device when they screw us like that?

Yes you will. Already you owned two devices.....lol nah..just kidding
thanks htc. i bought your phone, and to show your appreciation you shove some bull**** words down my throat and make me realize that I've been ****ed over with your gimmicky under-powered device.
I agree with the other guy, why should i bother with you arse's again after being burned.
suck a big one htc

You're lucky.
I bought 2 devices with this problem.
i have a question!
Is a rom from any Qualcomm 7200 Device online? Like LG KS20?

Not according to that quote from HTC:
"its Qualcomm MSM7xxx-based devices DOT NOT use ATI’s Imageon video acceleration HARDWARE"
They don't say it's not THERE, they just say they don't USE it.
And, it IS there, it is an integral part of the Qualcomm MSM7200 chip, who licenced the technology from ATI. You can't rip out part of a chip, and neither can HTC

Depends how you read it really. Doesn't say the acceleration hardware isn't there though.
Bottom line is still that HTC are currently doing sod all, and apparently aren't intending to do anything, either.
HTC actually believes that a bunch of morons are buying their products, might as well address this message to those users that want a keypad just to make phone calls.
Can't wait for 3g iPhone now...

Ill start right away, along with a brute force on my Cray to shut them down...permanently.
Is there any way to make WM6 support more than 65K Colors?
Pictures and videos look much better on nokia's which supports about 262K colors.
I don't think so. It's hardware restriction

Well it's a hardware restriction, because WinMo doesn't support more, so the manufacturers don't build devices with better displays (cheaper)!
The hardware does support 264k colors BUT the o.s cant.
there was a petition recently against HTC about hardware acceleration in devices using the msm7200 processors.
HTC had to reply to the petition eventually.
Can we have a petition against MS for this issue, because almost all LCD's now support 262K colors and its just the OS that's limiting this.
hardware specs say its a hardware restriction thouhg? where do you guys see that it supports 262k?
I have been using the Tilt (original Kaiser) since the day it
came out. I think it is a great device. However, the
BIGGEST COMPLAINT I have always had was the SLOW graphics.
I am still running Windows Mobile 6.0 waiting for a
good / stable ROM to come out by someone with great
graphics performace. There have been some fantastic cooked ROMS
for the device but I have always held off waiting for
something with good graphics drivers in it. Did I miss
something that is worth moving to now that 6.1 and even 6.5
roms are out and about?
I have seen a lot of posts about which roms are best,
etc, etc and why but graphics performace has always been an
issue from what I have seen...
There are so many posts and even entire sites (see
below if interested) about our device and the poor
performance. Is there finally a decent solution to speed up
at least simple 2D drawing operations, including the
user interfaces of normal applications?
Does a good Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 ROM make much difference
in 2D or 3D on the Kaiser vs 6.0? Perhaps that
is the easiest solution to getting good graphics performance??!
Since the Tilt uses the MSM720x chipset and many other
devices use that chipset, has someone finally cooked a
rom for the tilt with good accelerated drivers from another
device yet and that is a good solution?
ALL COMMENTS WELCOME.
Of course good OpenGL ES and D3D acceleration would be great too.
Seems our device by default is only using software mode
Many now say our Kaiser is dead / "obsolete hardware" now and
decent drivers are not worth anyone's trouble.
I'm not sure what I think about this.
I understand there have been a million posts
and lots of threads like:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=339745&page=109
and even
http://www.htcclassaction.org/driverprogress.php#update_20080717_1
which seems to have ended over a year ago.
Perhaps that was when someone found a way of enabling
OpenGL ES on Android? Either way, can someone make some comments
on what they think?
Look around you at the 1000s of posts, and try the search button. We solved the graphics issue a long time ago.
Nothing to do with ROM Development and as polyrhythmic said we solved the graphics issue a long time ago.
On that note thread closed.
So pretty much I was reading this article and Google has states that Android 3.0 named Honeycomb isn't coming to smartphones due to smaller screen size but that features will be coming. This is bad news to yet even more fragmentation with Android.
I hope 2D Hardware Accelerated graphics is one of the features to make it's way to smartphones.
Article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2379271,00.asp
What are your guys thoughts on this?
I sincerely hope that honeycomb will be avaiable also on smartphones
I just learned that CM7 doesn't have hardware acceleration? Is this true? If so, I have a few questions:
1. When will it be available in CM7?
2. If not, what ROM has hardware acceleration in it that I can flash right now? Preferably Gingerbread; I don't want to go back to Froyo unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks!
Where did you hear this? It DOES have hw acceleration.

First, I tried playing some 720p videos on my phone, using Rockplayer. It says "cannot play this file using the system player". I can only play the files using the hardware decode set to OFF.
So I Googled, and came up with some hits that hardware decoding/acceleration did not make it to CM7. For instance, here:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20404-720p-video-playback-on-cm7-stable/
Bump. I'd like to get some feedback/input on this please.
there is not a single android phone that uses hardware acceleration out there right now, except for the international version of the galaxy s. samsung was nice enough to give that phone a special update.
all other phones do not use hardware acceleration for anything like scrolling homescreens, lists, basically nothign. android 2.4 is supposedly adding in the APIs to now make hardware acceleration available.
note HTC may perhaps make certain custom apps hardware accelerated like a video playback app or something. but nothing else is ever hardware accelerated that i know of. so cyan 7 wont get it until android 2.4 is out

Won't using hardware acceleration save us battery and make our phones even smoother? It makes no sense not to use the capabilities the phone has!

Without a doubt. Its mind blowing that Google hasn't done this from the start. This has been debated by a Google employee (Ry guy I think?) And you can read thru the thread over on the Google support forums. Its a long known discussion in that thread.
