HTC’s official response to a “drivers issue”
From PhoneMag
HTC is committed to delivering a portfolio of devices that offer a wide variety of communication, connectivity and entertainment functionality. HTC does not offer dedicated or optimized multimedia devices and can confirm that its Qualcomm MSM7xxx-based devices do not use ATI’s Imageon video acceleration hardware.
HTC believes the overall value of its devices based on their combination of functionality and connectivity exceeds their ability to play or render high-resolution video. These devices do still provide a rich multimedia experience comparable to that of most smartphones and enable a variety of audio and video file formats. HTC values its customers and the overall online community of mobile device enthusiasts and fans. HTC plans to include video acceleration hardware in future video-centric devices that will enable high resolution video support.

It is interesting to hear that the Tytn II does not use ati imageon. When Tcpmp was loaded onto my hermes it would have a ati imageon option under options > video.
Now on the Kaiser there is no option at all for ati imageon.
Im not the most knowledgeable on this board regarding software, but does tcpmp "search" for the hardware on the device when it is installed?

Not according to that quote from HTC:
"its Qualcomm MSM7xxx-based devices DOT NOT use ATI’s Imageon video acceleration HARDWARE"

They don't say it's not THERE, they just say they don't USE it.
And, it IS there, it is an integral part of the Qualcomm MSM7200 chip, who licenced the technology from ATI. You can't rip out part of a chip, and neither can HTC

HTC somewhat un-fazed at the current Qualcomm / Broadcom dispute saying they have " a couple of contingencies in place to keep things rolling. "
I believe this dispute will be cleared up before the Q3 release.
In my opinion I can't see them doing this, for one leasing two operating systems for the one device will drive up the cost on the production side for porting it to the device specifics and to the consumer for having 2 MS operating systems running...
I would expect we will get something similar to the Samsung i900 (model name could be wrong) the UMPC esque device that ran XP and had a dialer program as part of it for utilising the devices phone functions.
Personally I can't see the practicality of WM6 on this device, I it's just too big to even have the phone function considered as useful. But as a portable comms / umpc I see some advantages.
Hopefully I'll be getting one on release, but I thinks it's going to be expensive and I'm not sure it will warrant a high price tag...
Maybe I'll just get a Mac Book Pro instead
It could just be using WM6 as a framework to utilise sideshow, and give access to your PIM info without having to wait a few minutes to boot into Vista, and wasting battery life.
Not a bad idea if that's how it would work.
It also explains that spurious 64mb RAM in specs people keep seeing, and getting confused about.

Samsung Omnia Pro!!!!

A device has now been tested www.gsmarena.com/samsung_b7610_omniapro-review-378.php
What are your thoughts? Is this a match for the TP2?
I hate to say it, but im swayed by this device to move away from HTC until they bring the next touch/keyboard device (TP3?)
I still prefer TP2!
The only point I can see is not better is in processor, but I´ll wait patiently to see the 09-10 HTC new models!
ooh i dont know that seems prettty nice.... but since its probably not coming to tmobile here in the us i think i have no choice but to go iwth the touch pro 2, it will probably go to Verizon cause they where the only one to get the last omnia
A match? To be honest, I'm not seeing how the Touch Pro 2 is supposed to be better or even equal to a phone that has an AMOLED screen and 800Mhz Cortex A8 processor. The B7610 even beats the TP2 in little things like camera and ROM storage amount.

That's old news... I was not impressed.
Im so impatient, I dont think I can wait til the next version of the Touch Pro is available. The TP2 has only just been released and therefore its probably going to be another 12 months.
The fact the Samsung is lighter, better screen, camera (inc flash), I have to admit im tempted
.... and you have Samsung build quality which is, in my experience, awesome..... unlike my experience of HTC's which is frankly, awefull.
You will be able to get many cooked roms over at omnia.modaco.com and you will get just as much support from them and here when combined.

I used to have a Touch HD and video performance was a letdown. Don't get me wrong the HD is a magnificent device, but not being able to watch videos as they should be on this great screen was dissapointing. I tried many different encoders, like doctor divx, nero recode and the encoder made for this device but none of them gave me satisfiyng results. Especially considering that I had to REENCODE a complete movie, this process could easily take several hours. Many tweaks drivers etc never gave me full satisfaction. I made tons of little clips to test the best possible performance for the least amount of encoding time and my findigs were that my best option was to reencode with Nero at a maximum resolution of 524 and max bitrate of 700 and selecting Quicktime compatibility for the MPEG ASP. So I ended up with tons of clips, each time trying wich is the best. The following things were particularly frustrating.
- No out of the box divx/xvid support
- playback of divx/xvid with coreplayer or any other 3rd party player was slow and laggy
- No standard MPEG 4 ASP support, for example videos recorded on other devices like Nokia's wouldn't play. Also many programs would create incompatible mp4 files for this device. Later I found out because it doesnt support the Advanced Simple Profile but only the Simple Profile. (Quicktime compatible)
- No standard MPEG 4 AVC support, as the point above the only way to make mp4 video work on this device was to use the encoder program wich was very very very slow. (on my pc at least) Files created with nero or xvid or any other VC-1 encoder would fail to play on this device.
- Even videos created with the special encoder would play fine, but seeking and switching from fullscreen to portrait etc was always lagging.
NOW : I bought a Samsung Omnia PRO B7610 and man it's a world of difference. Seriously this device is awesome for video playback. Smooth playback, fast mode switching, fast seeking forward. I mean everything wich was wrong with the HD is right with this device. I hadn't deleted my bunch of test clips for the HD and this device plays nearly all of them without a problem. And the best part is, I don't have to reencode anything anymore. Every divx/xvid video I tried played flawlessly. Lost episodes downloaded from the web at 624 resolution look perfect on the Amoled Screen, and play perfectly smooth. Well I am certainly satisfied with this device.

where did you get this deveice from , i've been waiting for it for a long time. does anyone have any idea about a UK release date. i've been scouring the internet and can't find a thing.
I got it online from pdashop / Coolblue. Price for just the phone without contract was 468 euros. You can probably find it cheaper online, but I was prepared to give a little more to get my hands on this a soon as possible.

no snapdragon...no netflix for you!!!

(at least for now anyway)
still love my captivate but this could be a major issue for some customers in determining what phone they use.
The article says android users with snapdragon 1ghz or faster processor will be able to stream netflix. No mention of hummingbird...which at least for now will mean no netflix streaming. The galaxy s 2 is using an orion processor so it looks like it will be waiting as well.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-0...streaming.html
I don't see how they would keep the community from just pulling the APK and installing it to other devices. How would they make the app itself discriminate based on your CPU? Is there an API for that? You can't reasonably write a Windows or Linux binary that will only run on Intel CPUs, for example.
Well i dont think it wont work with processors other than snapdragon, I mean, probably the may be refering to the speed of the processor itself

Snapdragon 1GHZ = Hummingbird 1GHZ
Clockspeed doesn't differ simply based on a name or manufacturer.

Agreed. Qualcomm made this announcement, so obviously they are going to mention *their* processor and not a competitor's. Although it doesn't explicitly outline it in the article, it is clear that Android is getting a Netflix app and if your device is powerful enough to run it then you can use it. Qualcomm is working with Netflix to bring this to Android.
Unless I read otherwise, I'm going to assume that ALL Android devices are getting Netflix and they aren't going to go out of their way to exclude devices that do not have Qualcomm chips.
Bad link. This one should work: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-14/netflix-shares-jump-on-news-of-android-streaming.html
I would like to encourage OP to A) post in the right forum (props for catching it, though), B) post links that work, and C) don't write sensationalist titles with no explicit bearing of truth to them.
Sorry OP, but this kind of gets under my skin.
The OP is probably correct. The Snapdragon processor has "media protection features" aka DRM that Netflix is taking advantage of. The Hummingbird part may or may not have similar DRM mechanisms that may or may not be software compatible with the Snapdragon solution.
If the Netflix APK depends on a hardware feature that's not present, then it obviously would not work on all phones. This is going to be very confusing for end users.
The press release refers to the "media protection features".
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/02/14/netflix-on-android-confirmed-for-snapdragon-phones-first/
If that is truly the case, I'm sure one of the genius Devs here will find a way to bypass or emulate the protection scheme.

If the DRM can be bypassed or emulated, that means no one will get any Netflix in the end. That's why iOS and even the new WP7 have Netflix already and Android doesn't.
I dont think they can keep it from everybody either. This is the ONLY thing i miss from my iphlone
I assume the Qualcom chips come with DRM built into the processor similar to hardware accelerated graphics. If that's the case it should be possible to write an application that will only work on that processor. This I'd especially true if they don't publicly release the drm spec so it can be replicated in software. Even if they did that the processing visa software would be slower and prone to more problems.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I havent seen anything that can bypass drm at all
I don't think the processor will actually enable or disable by brand in think it just won't work on slower processors and snapdragon is the houshold name of fast processors

I doubt it. We're in the minority - the vast majority of users don't want to modify their phones and probably wouldn't be bothered with trying to find a way to get netflix to work on their hardware incompatible devices. If someone does manage to find a way to emulate the drm hardware, or NOP out the bits in software that deal with it or something to get the software to run, I doubt netflix would really care as long as you're still paying for the content.
I don't see the problem. You have to have a Netflix account to access the streaming content, so all they have to do is prevent the device from being able to record it. They already do that now on my Western Digital Live Hub.
Netflix has to show its content providers that the streamed content will not be compromised. Otherwise, content providers will not allow Netflix to stream the content at all. DRM is a necessary evil to live with in this case.
Netflix already publically said that they will selectively release player for certain Android phones, not all. That means Android phones with hardware DRM protection. They are not happy with the general DRM support in Android OS (or the total lack there of).
It is not about processor speed. If iOS can have it and WP7 can have it, processor speed is not the issue.
If Netflix see any sign of its DRM being compromised, it will simply ban all the Android phones or re-write the player. It is one battle you don't want to engage in. Nothing good come out it.
I believe a few content provider already pull its content out of Netflix streaming due to this concern. If any Netflix players prove to be unsafe, more will do so. Soon we will end up with a Netflix player with nothing to watch.
The write mentions snapdragon because thats all his limited intellect on the subject knows about. Hummingbird or any other 1GHZ PLUS cpu will work.
How does Blockbuster do it?
All I hear is how Netflix needs to have such and such for DMR. What I don't get, how is Blockbuster streaming content with Android devices? Verizon version of the Galaxy S includes Blockbuster.
I am really enjoying my Captivate and Android, but not having Netflix, Zumocast or airVideo has been a big disappointment for me. I wish I did a littel more research as i still can't beleive that Android base devices really don't have a true video streaming apps.
From what I gather, BB is not the same streaming as Netflix. It is basically a on-demand download. You need download to the phone before you watch. The content will auto-expire after certain priod.

Technically i don't think your assertion is correct.
I have read multiple articles on this and stating snapdragon processors "First" or "only" at this time is the line in all of them (and further specificy that Android 3.0 adds a pluggable DRM framework to OS). Some speculate that they will continue to work on ways to provide the app to smartphones who have processors that don't have the built in security like the snapdragon while you could just as easily suggest that the way they will do this is via OS updates and assume anyone that netflix matters to will just get a phone with a future android OS that have the drm framework already incorporated. (Before you say 3.0 is for tablets there is plenty of info suggesting that it will reach the smartphone level & if it doesn't future versions of the smartphone os like the rumored ice cream could bring similar security features).
All that aside i wouldn't put anything past the abilities of the talented developers here so even if that official app won't play nice with our hummingbird i wouldn't be surprised by a some kind of unofficial tweak that allows us to still get netflix streaming content.
There is even some speculation that some of the older phones using 1st gen snapdragon's that do not have the secureMSM may not be able to utilize the official app.
However Peters already admitted in his blog post that some Android handsets will never see the Netflix service. "This clearly is not the preferred solution, and we regret the confusion it might create for consumers," he said. "However, we believe that providing the service for some Android device owners is better than denying it to everyone."

[Q] What is the technical reason for android hardware fragmentation?

I have heard a lot about how very often an android developer will need to adjust their app for different devices with different screen sizes or resolutions or graphics cards.
How come it is possible that an app can work perfectly on whatever device they are testing on and crash on another?
How come it isn't like Windows? In Windows you can develop one program and expect it to run on any pc no matter what graphics card it uses or processor or screen resolution or size of the screen.
I most recently read about this issue on Mika Mobile's blog regarding Battleheart for Android.
I understand that this may not be a simple answer and may end up being very detailed, but I welcome that.
because unlike pcs mobile phone companies ***** and moan about every component in there device ie the patent wars that are going on. with pc's you make it as compatible as you can nearly every game uses direct x so if your a hardware manufacture you make sure your components run with direct x if you dont your products wont sell. mobile phone companies dont do this they seem to try make there phones as uncompilable with other phones as they possibly can
In Windows you can develop one program and expect it to run on any pc no matter what graphics card it uses or processor or screen resolution or size of the screen.

That's not really correct many windows programs work only at set resolutions, meaning if your screen is lower res parts of the interface are out of sight.

If you were a developer at Google.............

Hello everyone,
Just for the sake of fun. If you have been given the opportunity to decide the future of android, What would you do? Which feature do you want to see in android?
May be people @ Google are 'really' watching this thread. Who knows?
Shoot your opinions
PS: I would say, a multi user (logoff and on) feature so that one can change profiles in office and home. (Haven't seen this as native android feature)
Feature wise, I'd push for smoother graphics, put an end to the "iPhone is faster" trolls.
Smoother ...more exclusives to android.. game mostly ...as gamevil seem to stick every thing on iPhone first ..

One of the things that holds back game developers is having to do extra work to support multiple GPUs (Tegra, OMAP, Adreno, etc). It would be nice if Android had something like DirectX on Windows where the GPU brand doesn't matter, instead the GPU is certified for a DirectX # level and can run all games up to that #.
There have been some good games out there that were Tegra only early on for example and when you see its incompatible with your graphically capable OMAP device its not good. Judging from the reviews left people don't like when this happens.
I really don't understand why android cannot run as smooth as iphone, i think it's really system problem rather than hardware's problem...

Apple have a few phones they build inhouse, and create software and drivers for it, that they can constantly tune and improve.
Google on the other hand, have to support an unlimited amount of devices and drivers, so they don't get the same time to improve drivers. Not to mention you then get 3rd parties with their own skins and what not.
It's the price we pay for freedom
